Startup disks don't match computer

I bought a desktop HP Pavilion a few years back from Office Depot.  They MADE the startup disks for me.  Now I have a new hard drive and I put in the first of the startup disks, and it whirred around for awhile, looking as if it was doing something, and then I got the message that the startup disks didn't go with the computer.
I have an external hard drive and Carbonite backup to this hard drive which takes snapshots of the system and the files are backed up to their web site.  So far, they haven't been able to restore my system from that external hard drive, so I am up to their highest level of engineering support trying to figure out how to get the operating system from the external hard drive to my new hard drive.
HP support wants to charge me $150 to access my external hard drive to get at the operating system, but Carbonite says HP won't be able to do that because the external hard drive has Carbonite's proprietary software on it which HP technicians won't be able to bypass.
The model number of my computer is m94021.  The operating system I had on it is Microsoft Windows 7 Professional.

Assuming that your Backup company can then assist in the Recovery of your personal data, this may be sufficient to get headed in the right direction.
I understand you might have liked better to have Windows 7 -- but at least this is a working Operating System and it gives you a place to start.

    To eject the Disc, hold the Mouse button down, (or what passes for it on a Laptop), while powering up, if you also hold the Option key down at the same time it should eject & give you a chance to insert your install disc & wait for it to shw as a Boot option.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc , then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
    *Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
    If it appears to be time for An Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, APPs, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

  • My MacBook Pro is almost out of space on my startup disk?? The computer is only a month old!!

    I have a new MacBook Pro, and I also got the iphone 5 for Christmas.  I wanted to upload all the pics/videos off of the old iPhone onto my MacBook before restoring it and setting up the new iPhone.  Once I started the import process, halfway through, I got a notice saying I was getting close to running out of space of my startup disk.  This seems weird to me.  I am new to Mac systems, and am trying to find where I can see how much memory I am using, how much I have available.  Can someone help me?
    I feel very computer illiterate!!!

    Click on the HDD icon in the upper left hand corner of your desktop, COMMAND I (the letter i).  The icon will probably be labeled McIntosh HD.

    I have a Mac-mini (late 2012 model), originally with Mac OS X Maverick Server installed (with two HDD). Recently, I had clean installed Windows 8.1 on one of the HDD (worked perfectly, just slow) and swapped the other HDD (with Mac OSX) with a SSD. I then cloned the Windows OS HDD in to the new SSD. Now I am trying to boot this Mac mini from this SSD, however, since this Mac mini do not have BIOS for me to change the boot sequence at the startup, is there any one can help?

  • Startup disk doesn't have enough memory for applications

    I keep getting this message that my startup disk doesn't have enough memory for applications, and advising me to quit apps. Even after a restart I get the same message. I am using only about 10% of my hard drive and I have 4GB or RAM. I have run Disk Utility to repair permissions, I have confirmed that my MacintoshHD is the startup drive, but still keep getting this message. I am running Snow Leopard on a three-year old iMac.     Startup disks don't provide memory, RAM modules do. When the machine runs out of usable RAM, it uses disk space for virtual memory. Step one would be to run the Apple Hardware Test program, extended tests, and ensure that your RAM is viable. If the RAM passes those tests, download, and run Rember.

    Monitor it if you are using that sort of space. In answer to your question, no.

  • System Preferences Startup Disk Vs. Boot with Option key depressed.

    External FW drive connected via standard 400 FW cable, is recognized by System Preferences>Startup Disk, proving that it contains a valid OS X system. But when selected, and clicking Restart, first in the System Preferences>Startup Disk window, then in the modal dialogue, the computer beeps, but does not restart. Same behavior when the computer's internal drive is selected.
    The only way to select a startup disk is booting the computer (select Restart from Apple Menu) holding the Option key, clicking the required icon, and then clicking the arrow at the right end of the window.
    I have run DiskWarrior, zapped the PRAM (that should take care of startup settings), no change.
    Sum up: System Preferences>Startup Disk does not perform.

    there might be a timing problem. At the time when the Mac PRAM asks for the startup disk the firewire disk might not be "present" yet. Can you turn on the external disk manually?
    Does the preference pane "remember" your selection of the startup disk or does it change it back to the internal disk?
    You might want to run some system maintenance, especially clean the caches: Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance

    Simple way to make HDD free space is delete files you don't need anymore.
    Or get bigger drive and external HDD case, then:
    1) install bigger HDD in external drive case.
    2) connect external drive and format and mount it with Disk Utility.
    3) make clone with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!(source drive is internal HDD, target drive is external one).
    4) install external bigger drive into your Macbook Pro.
    In the cace if your're using Mac Pro:
    1) get bigger HDD and install it in drive bay of Mac Pro.
    2) format and mount it with Disk Utility.
    3) make clone with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!(source drive is old HDD, target drive is new one).
    4) Select boot drive to new bigger one.

  • Startup disk full: computer crashed

    I started getting a message saying that my startup disk was full, so I thought I would trash Microsoft Office as I have just installed a later version. I then discovered that my Word files wouldn't open, even those I had created on the new version of Office. I then restarted the computer and it only got to the first stafe (grey apple logo). It now won't open up further than this.
    AAHHH! I'm sure I've done the wrong thing by trashing the old Office, but if anyone has any ideas of what I can do now I would be very grateful. Have tried using the TechTools disk but this freezes as well.

    before we go into a lengthy repair procedure (which does not even guarantee success) you should do an Archive&Install:
    1. Check for a minimum of 4 GB of free hard disk space on your hard disk
    2. Unplug all peripherals
    3. Insert the Install DVD and reboot while holding down the c-key
    4. Once you are booted go to the menu and select disk utility
    5. Repair the disk and Repair permissions!
    6. Quit disk utility and proceed with the installation
    7. Under "options" select "Archive&Install" and check the box "keep user and network data".
    8. Install Tiger
    9. Restart
    10. Go to the folder Application/Utilities and run disk utility to repair permissions again.
    11. Download (or open if you downloaded before) Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (PPC) and install it.
    12. Restart and repair permissions
    13. Go to the Apple menu and select "Software Update"
    14. Install all missing updates and restart.
    15. Repair permissions

    P.S. In the future you can save appr. 500-800 MB of disk space by running Monolingual to remove all languages you do not need.

  • Can I set up a startup disk for another computer?

    My mom has an iMac and apparently the internal disk has failed. Starts up with the disk and question mark, and running the Disk Utility can't access or format it.
    I was going to get an external disk for her to use as a startup disk and was wondering if I can set it up from my computer then send it to her to use with hers. I have an iBook G4 and it would be much easier for me to connect the new drive to my computer, install Mac OS X on it, set up accounts, then install updates. I have DSL and she has dialup, so downloading updates on her system literally takes all night.
    I guess I'm wondering if the installer gears the system to work with the hardware it's being run on, or if it doesn't really matter.

    If your Mom's computer supports Firewire, and meets the minimum system requirements for Tiger or the minimum system requirements for Panther depending on which system you plan to install, it should be fine. In terms of the legality, I am not sure if having the system installed on an external HDD runs afoul of the Software License Agreement which statesThis License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time...On the other hand if you Mom has the install disk and just can't get it on the internal HDD, there should be no problem.

    Bought a used Macc book 5.2. I want to migrate my email from my older iMac G5. I don't have the password for the original administrator on either coomputer. Don't have a start up disk for either computer. I read that I could change the password and name with a startup disk. What do i do?

    The seller should have provided you with the original discs that came with the computer.  Contact the seller to obtain the discs as well as the admin password.  If needed you can call AppleCare Customer Service to purchase replacement discs.
    You don't need the admin password for your old computer if you currently can log into it.

  • Select Startup Disk Locks Computer?

    Hello! I'm a long time Mac user and OS9 is old work but I've run into a problem I can't seem to alleviate. When I click to select a startup disk in the startup disk control panel it locks the computer. My utilities all give me a clean bill of health and I haven't done or added anything to the system folder in the last couple of years. I haven't had any crashes or locks in a couple of years also. I tried trashing the startup disk prefs file which had no effect also. Usually I don't have any problems sorting out an extension problem but I'm at a loss on this one. Any ideas? Tom
    Oh yes, the computer is a G-3 minitower, 768 megs of ram, one internal scsi on sys bus, one internal ide drive and an internal scsi on a card; also an external firewire drive. OS9.2.2.And the problem manifests itself on any drive selection. Tom

    Hi, Tom -
    That sometimes happens when a 3rd-party driver has been installed.
    Although OS 9's Drive Setup can not initialize and format drives connected via firewire or USB, it can do that for SCSI drives. However, if the drive has had 3rd-party drivers installed, their presence can confound Drive Setup.
    The solution then is to put the drive into a PC and format it as a PC drive. Then bring it back to the Mac; Drive Setup should then work on it. Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find a PC which can handle a SCSI drive.
    An alternate may be to use OSX's Disk Utility, which in many ways is more robust and capable than OS 9's Drive Setup.
    Since the drive is working now, redoing it may not be of great priority - but it is something to keep in mind for the future, such as if (or when) you install OSX on that machine.

    Try starting in Safe mode which does not load all the software that is used in a regular boot. It also runs a disk check. After booting in safe mode transfer or trash stuff you don't really need so as to free up disk space. Be sure to hold the shift key down continously till a progress bar shows on the screen.

    Okay so my MacBook will not turn on. It is at a grey screen with no apple logo or anything. Just a blank screen. I hold down the option key so it brings me to internet recovery .
