Startup Drive failure
On my G5 PPC tower running 10.5.4, my main startup disk failed to start up: just a black screen and whining fans. Fortunately, I have a secondary hard drive, which is reasonably recent, (10.4.4) and I was able to start up with that.
I repaired permissions on the original drive, and verified it with Disk Utility. A couple of permissions were out, but no errors reported on the drive itself. I ran repair permissions again, just in case. Everything checked out. It showed up as a valid startup drive in SYS PREFS. When I tried to start from it again, I got the same result.
I erased the drive and cloned over the backup with Carbon Copy Cloner. Again, it showed up as a valid startup drive, and again I got the black screen when I tried to start up from it.
Anyone out there with any ideas what might be wrong?
"Is it possible resetting the PRAM didn't 'take' in some way? Worth trying again?"
Well, not if you did it correctly, but a second go wouldn't hurt.
As resetting the PRAM did not work I don't know what the cause of the problem is.
It has Leopard on it yes? The only other thing to try is boot from the Leopard DVD - same method with the Option key, choose the DVD as the boot volume, choose Disk Utilities from the top menu bar, and run _Repair Disk_ on the troublesome drive. If it finds errors, repeat the process until no errors are reported. Then Restart.

Hi,
From what you describe it's certainly a Hard Drive failure so you'll definetely need to contact HP. Personally, considering this is the 2nd HDD in under 2 months, I say it's either bad luck ( however unlikely ) or there is another issue at play - it may be worth suggesting this to HP when you contact them.

"Imminent hard drive failure" on my Pavilion G4-1209AX which is brand new
Why do i get the message, "Imminent hard drive failure" on my Pavilion G4-1209AX which is brand new? Has Windows 7 Ultimate installed and used for one day only?
Says something about a "Sata" disk problem.Hi,
"Imminent hard drive failure" do you get this message in a black screen (as in the BIOS) or in windows.
This could be a Hard drive failuer.
Please run a startup test by tapping F2 when the system is powered on.

Macbook Pro 2011 extremely slow wondering if hard drive failure
Hello, I want to start off by saying I'm not a huge computer guru, so that is why I'm coming here first. My Macbook Pro worked very well for a year, and then it has slowed down drastically. I've always been a windows user so mac is kind of foreign to me, but I'm trying to learn.
Some problems I've encountered are 1. Extremely slow running whether internet related, or just an application. I have checked the activity monitor and nothing is hogging up my memory. 2. Spinning wait cursor (rainbow circle) when I try to do ANYTHING. It takes minutes to start computer once it makes it to home screen. The circle just spins for a few minutes. Even just web surfing it's there. 3. Battery drains from 100% to less than 20% in 30 minutes, which again is annoying. 4. When battery drains the fan turns on and seems to drain battery even faster. 5. I get a lot of random errors forcing shut down of programs. I have ignored this problem for two years by not using my laptop or using it very minimally, but I am going to be needing a laptop again for school and not just my iPad and phone so I was planning on taking my macbook to genius bar, but wanted to check here first since Apple is an hour away. Plus I want to be able to use the piece of equipment that I spent a decent chunk of change on. I used time machine to back up everything today. I know its not a space issue as I have 300+ free GB on hard drive. I have tried to read through similar posts, but its overwhelming so I came here to post my own question.
I ran disc utility and there were some errors, which were able to be corrected after a couple tries. Computer still slow though when trying to do anything and running rainbow circle.
In recovery mode I reinstalled OSX
I was finally able to install updates after completing the above that were not able to be installed before.
I ran etre check, this is the report that came up:

Basically I'm wondering if anything sticks out in this report. I was thinking it could be a possible hard drive failure. I know my computer has been dropped on the floor at least a few times. Thoughts are appreciated. Thank you for your patience.Eab, I feel your pain! I am replying simply to share my similar ongoing experience with my early 2011 17 inch MacBook Pro, running Mavericks with seeming ample hard drive space, [applications requiring less than 100GB, about 200GB data (total drive space of 500GB)] & 4GB RAM. (Disclaimer: I am not a wise or computer-savvy mac guru - simply a fellow traveler who has had a very similar set of problems - apps taking forever to load, rapid battery depletion & super overheated MacBook. While I am a Genius Bar groupie, getting to the Apple store is, for me, akin to an antarctic polar expedition (i.e. problematic). Having spent endless hours struggling with a similar issue, I offer you a synopsis of my struggle/experience.
STEPS TO DATE:
1.Installed several memory utility programs (Daisy Disk & MacCleanse) system
maintenance program to regularly and thoroughly empty application caches (Adobe apps & internet browsers being tremendous hogs), identify and remove language elements and other redundant space hogs, etc. Result: Small, but real improvement when I forced myself to perform a "scan and delete" session every second major computer run (typically about 6-8 hours in length). However, this did nothing to help the problems regularly detected when I run the Disk Utility which almost invariably demonstrates disk permissions that need to be repaired and, with increasing frequency, has demonstrated actual disk errors that require restarting and walking through a disk repair protocol. I did bring it to the Genius Bar where they kindly reinstalled Mavericks which they could do in about an hour versus the several hours that doing this at home requires. This did identify that my RAM was, on fact, a limitation on the speed at which I could run certain apps.
2. My next move was to install an additional 4GB of RAM. I bought the new RAM on eBay for about $90 because, with 3 kids equipped with MacBooks & iPhones, I simply couldn't afford the official Apple RAM. I even installed it myself, with the help of a YouTube video. Result: Giant improvement in speed (starting up or switching apps. If I had realized how simple it turned out to be, I would have done it well over a year ago. Some minor improvement in the overheating problem, but persistent problems with disk permissions continually requiring repair and periodic disk repairs (using Disk Utility) required.
PLANNED FINAL INTERVENTION:
3. I am purchasing and installing a solid state drive (ssd) and simply chucking the original hard drive, after considerable discussion with my savvier mac friends. It has become clear to me that, sadly, every hard drive has a finite life affected by a variety of factors. I am, in fact, hard on my equipment - running multiple graphic apps simultaneously, transferring massive GBs of data between my laptop, time capsule and an array of hard drives. I will let you know how it goes, but can share that the decision to get a solid state drive followed many conversations with multiple Mac guru-types (in the hope of saving you similar painful tribulations). The cost varies according to the size of the drive, but $400-$500 would buy a reasonable starting size. I am waiting for Black Friday sales, myself. Amazon (where I will likely purchase the ssd) is already offering a number of pre-Black Friday deals. While I don't really feel like putting out that amount of cash, I reassure myself that a new drive will almost certainly solve the disk errors (with a solid state one offering more durability) & will help me prolong the life of my MacBook Pro by a couple of years hopefully. It beats buying a new Apple MacBook only three and a half years after investing close to $3k for this one!
I am certain that more experienced forum users could point you to software that could help defragment your drive or may be able to offer other solutions. I've simply had enough of struggling with burning thighs and head-banging behavior triggered by slow performance. I hope this is helpful to you in some small way. The war is not yet over, but I'm feeling good about the battle plan! -
Hard Drive Failure on HP DV 6000 Pavilion laptop - Need Data Recovery Help
HP Pavilion DV 6108 NR, RG365UA, purchased in late 2006 at Best Buy, with Windows XP, upgraded to Service Pack 3. It has a Fujitsu hard disk, 60 gigabyte, partitioned into C: and a Recovery D:.
Windows tries to boot up, but goes to blue screen with the message: "Unmountable Boot Volume" for one second, then just keeps recycling until I force a shutdown.
BIOS Phoenix, hard drive test result: " #1-08 Fail "
I ran a disk analysis/recovery program on the Cdrive and it seemed to show the directory structure intact, and it was able to recover some files. I was using the free one from Seagate (which only recovers small files). The second pass didn't run so well, and during the third run the program said I should not proceed further, and I should contact a professional disk recovery company.
However, the D drive seems to be intact, so, I wonder if the disk is corrupted or just some aspect of the logical C drive is bad.
How can I get the D: to run the recovery software on it? The recovery disks, made by Best Buy, only proceed to the R / F / Q option screen, and when I press R, I get a blue screen every time.
Tapping the F10 key during startup gets me nowhere. Ditto the F11 key.
I dont care about the hard disk; it is the data (files, docs, images, etc) that I want.
I contacted HP to order recovery disks but they are no longer available for my computer.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

JonHi @goshenguy
Thank you for your inquiry, I am happy to help.
I grasp you tested the hard drive from the bios and it failed. This tests the physical aspcects of the hard drive and when it fails it does require replacement. You were able to retrieve some of your files using recovery software but not all.
Your recovery partition is still intact and when you try to do a recovery with the disks from Best Buy you do not get past these options R / F / Q but will not proceed.
Here is a link to Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows XP, 2006 or Later) that may assist you in performing a recovery.
Here is a link to the Maintenance and Service Guide HP Pavilion dv6000 Notebook PC. Please note chapter 3 page 42 for a replacement hard drive part number.
HP Parts, HP Replacement Parts
If you are still unable to do the recovery, you could try contacting Best Buy for assistance with the recovery kit they provide.
I don't know if it is possible, but you may want to check cloning software to see if you could clone the D partion to the new drive or connect both drives and try a drive to drive copy of the D partition.
If you were able to successfully put the D partition on a new hard drive you should be able to do a recovery from the D partition to take it back to factory.
If none of the above has allowed you to successfully do a recovery, I suggest contacting Best Buy to see it they have options other then purchasing a third party recovery kit.
Good Luck!

Hard drive failures after 10.6 installation, 2 library folders appear.
I have had to erase my intel imac hard drive 3 times and reinstall 10.6.
Each time the computer slowed to a standstill after a day or so, while using safari or mail.
It could not be repaired with disk utility.
After reinstalling 10.6 I have then retrieved the data from time machine. In all cases I had to update to OS 10.6.1 in order get my printer going (with the updated driver).
The odd thing is that when checking the hard drive trying to find out what is causing the problem
I noticed that it had
one library folder in the system folder
and another library folder outside the system folder
on the internal hard drive.
Is this the reason for the hard drive failures?
What should I do with this?? How could this have happened?
Please help! I've been using only Mac since 1986 more or less without any trouble,
but now I am having the kind of problems with SL that I thought only Windows users had!HI,
"*It could not be repaired with disk utility.*"
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
*If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.*
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. *Where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space.*
There should be a Library folder in the System Folder.

Early 2013 Macbook Pro Retina. Fusion Drive failure?
A customer brought his early 2013 MBP in to my shop saying it wouldn't boot up. When I started it, it shows the ? folder. So, I assumed either fs corruption or physical hard drive failure. I installed Mounain Lion on an external hard drive connected to the laptop in order to access the drive (I didn't have a screwdriver for the new pentalobe screws....) Disk Utility immediately says wipe and reinstall, blah blah. So I opened up Disk Warrior and checked S.M.A.R.T. status and no errors had been logged. I attempted to rebuild the directory with DW 4.4 and it just sticks on "...searching entire drive in a final rescue attempt...." I did notice that the partition name changed from Macintosh HD to Unknown Disk sometimes. One time it said "Customer" and immediately DW found files and made a new directory. But when I attempted to write it, it gave a write error. So I installed ddrescue and attempted to make an image onto another drive. I used the rdisk device to do it. When it finished I checked the disk with hexdump on my linux box and got nothing but zeros. So I installed testdisk. When I select /dev/disk0 with testdisk it finds the partition table immediately and the files are all listed. When i select /dev/rdisk0, it finds nothing.... I am currently making another image with ddrescue using the /dev/disk0 device instead of rdisk0. I paused the rescue and checked the image fragment with hexdump and there is data in it! This is one of the new Fusion drives that Apple is using. Does anyone have an idea what could have happened here. Oh, almost forgot. The customer said he put the laptop to sleep and when he opened the lid it was frozen. He powered it off and that's when the ? folder appeared. Any input would be greately appreciated. Thanks.
He powered it off and that's when the ? folder appeared.
The flashing question mark appears when the firmware can't find the bootable volume it was assigned in System Preferences > Startup Disk.
The contents of NVRAM stores this I believe and is maintained by power from the battery, which like in PC towers is usualy maintained by the small motherboard battery, in the case of Mac's there is none.
So if he ran the battery dry the contents of NVRAM might have been lost and thus the machine doesn't know what volume to boot from.
So first thing first is to connect the machine to the MagSafe connector on a good power source not overloaded by other items. We need to make sure the machine is getting juice.
Reset the SMC
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
You should let it charge up for some time.
Next reset the NVRAM
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.
Naturally at this point your going to see the Flashing question mark again.
Press and hold the power button down to force a hardware shutdown.
Locate the option/alt key on the keyboard and hold it down, now boot the machine.
What you will see is a row of icons, this is Startup Manager.
If you see the OS X Macintosh HD partition, then select it and the arrow and boot it up,
Next head to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Startup Disk and set it to the MacintoshHD, this will remind the NVRAM what your preferred boot volume is.
Reboot normally to test. Done.
If you do Startup Manager and don't see the MacintoshHD boot volume, like you only see the RecoveryHD or it shows a globe spinning and then loads Interent Recovery, then there is something seriously wrong with the drive or the machine.
Now since that is such a new machine, it's covered by Apple's one year warranty, so the owner should just take it to them.
However your can perform passive data recovery on it if they require as Apple doesn't do that.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Don't open the machine it voids warranty and AppleCare on those models. -
What's the Difference Between Logic Board Failure and Hard Drive Failure
Hi!
So I wanted to know the difference between a Logic Board Failure and Hard Drive Failure because a couple of days ago I tried starting my computer up and I was welcomed by the Apple chime and a grey screen. I have been researching and most people say its either the hard drive or the logic board. So I am curious to know what are the symptoms of both. Thanks a lot, in advance! The hard drive is where the OS resides, if it dies there is no OS loading, so you can't boot. If you hook up your external drive with your clone of the internal drive, boot up and hold down the option key, select your clone drive as the startup drive in boot manager that then appears, and the computer boots normally, then the computer is OK, it is just the internal drive that has gone south. You don't have a clone to boot from? Now you know why you should.
You could try booting from the DVD that came with the computer, hold down the "D" key to run diagnostics and see what the results are. If you can't boot into the diagnostics then a trip to the Apple store is probably in order.

Startup Disk Failure. Can Anything be Saved?
I'm bought a used PowerMac G4 which I've been very happy with. However, I received a warning that my startup disk was failing. Before I could get a new one, it appears to have died. This computer has two hard drives (the smaller of the two was the startup disk). The 160g drive should still be working. Is there any way I can move the startup disk to the second drive? I should also mention that I get absolutely nothing on the screen when I boot up. It stays black so I can't see anything. The power light does come on and dim when I let go.
Thanks!Hi, Beth!
If the SMART status of the errant drive indicated that the disk was failing, it's a very good indicator that the drive needs immediate replacement. It may be dead now, but you won't be certain until you get the Mac to successfully boot.
The power light lighting while you're depressing it and then going out when you release it is a sign that the PMU needs to be reset. I would reset the PMU, load the Tiger install disc into the optical drive, and boot to the install disc. From the installer screen, choose Disk Utility from the menubar, select your errant startup volume, and run Repair Disk & Repair Permissions. Check the SMART status of this drive at the bottom of the Disk Utility window. Please advise us if the above is successful and what the SMART staus reads.
If the errant startup drive is indeed accessible, but the SMART status indicates an impending failure, you'll need to backup the startup volume to another drive. In the interim, I'd advise you not to use the Mac until you decide how you want to proceed.
You may certainly use your 160GB drive as the startup drive. If you have an empty volume on the 160 GB drive which is large enough to hold your startup volume, you can clone the entire startup volume to it. I'd recommend using SuperDuper , but you can use Disk Utility's Restore option to do this. If you don't have a spare, empty volume on the 160GB drive, then you'll either need to backup the data which is on it now, erase the drive, and then clone/restore. (Cloning the startup volume involves erasing whatever data that is currently on the destination volume it's being cloned to.) If you don't have an empty volume available, it may be easiest and safest to instead purchase another drive for this task. If you provide info on your specific Mac model, we can better advise you on different methods/options you might consider.

Satellite A665 hard disc drive failure
My first A665-S6095 had a hard disc drive failure after about 2 months of use. First signs of failure were lockup and sometimes it would fail to system boot. I had to do several hard boots with on/off button to get Windows to start. Eventually Windows recognized HDD failure by SMART and displayed a warning message window at startup.
"SMART Failure predicted on Hard Disk".
Only fix is to replace the hard drive. Fortunately I purchased an extended warranty at Office Depot.Me too....... less than 2 months though, more like 45 days......
.... but I didn't spring for the warranty from CompUSA so now my laptop sits in Toshiba Depot Hell.
I'm giving them till the end of the week then telling them to ship it back broken and I'll eat the cost of a new hard drive.
The techie rolled his eyes when I told him it was a brand new Toshiba saying that he's seen more than a few. I'm as equally upset with Toshiba's support and service as I am with CompUSA for selling these laptops with "known" issues. -
G4 Startup Drive Crash problems
My G4 crashed last night and it wont load past the grey apple screen now.
I booted from an external HDD's OS to try to fix the startup drive with Disk Warrior or Disk Utility. I have a lot of important data on the internal startup drive that's giving me an error and I can't get it to work with either Disk Utility or Disk Warrior. (please note that the internal drive with the errors is always unmounted)
Here are the errors I get with each application.
Disk Utility: Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
1 HFS Volume checked
1 Volume could not be repaired because of an error.
Disk Warrior: (This application stalls up on step 5 which is "Locating directory data")
it then says: Speed inhibited by disk malfunction.
I have a lot of extremely important data that has to do with my career on this drive. I can't afford to lose it, so I need any help anyone can give me to help repair or at least salvage the data before wiping the drive.
Thank you in advance.I've used Tech Tool Pro 4 before now which yielded some fairly good results, not used DW before though, but you could look here:

I've heard of another tool but can't remember the name (sorry) I'll ask the person who told me & I'll post back tomorrow.
Also you may find something free online if you look hard enough. Does anyone know a of a good downloadable program?

Graphite slot-loading G3 iMac drive failure
Hi. My G3 Graphite slot-loading iMac hard drive died this past week, or at least I thing it did. It has the original hard drive in it and is at least 10 years old, maybe more. It is a 60g drive with 2 partitions: 50g for OS X and 10g for OS 9.2. Now I hardly ever use the OS 9.2 partition, but I just never got rid of it.
It's the OS X partition that failed. I was working on it this past Saturday and I notice it was acting strange and slow. It froze on me twice and I was force to shut it down both times by pressing the white glowing on button on the front. Well, after that second restart is when the trouble started. I heard the start-up chime and that was it, just a gray screen for a long time, then the question mark and then, after several minutes, it booted into OS 9.2.
The OS X partition was completely unavailable. The only way I was able to see it was to boot the G3 in target disc mode and attached it thru firewire to my G4 iMac. In Disk Utility, the OS X partition came up as an unmounted drive. Disk Utility could not verify or fixed it. So I tried Disk Warrior 4. Disk Warrior was unable to fix it. So I purchased Prosoft Data Rescue ll and a new internal hard drive.
Data Rescue ll was able to recover all my files, but with some errors. So, I went and purchased a hard drive enclosure, put the internal hard drive in it, had Data Rescue II clone the entire G3 hd, and then had Data Rescue recover from the clone, with the same results. Prosoft support decipher the error messages to be reporting that some data was missing. Still waiting to hear from them exactly what that means.
Now I wrote all that to get to this question: If a partition fails on a single hd, does that mean the whole drive is bad? I thought that when you drive fails, you would not be able to see any of the partitions on it. Obviously, I'm going to replace it with the new internal drive that is currently serving as my clone drive. But, I was just wondering how this drive failed. I was going to try and see if I can reinitialized it and if so, reinstall OS X and see what happens. Or do you thing that is a waste of time? As i write this, the G3 is running in target disc mode and the drive sounds fine, not making any noise what so ever. I was wondering if this is an actual drive failure or somehow, when I rebooted the system folder got so damaged that it put the partition in the state it is currently in.
I'd like to know becuase, if I can just reinstall OS 10.4 and have access to that partition, I could back-up all my files that way and possibly have no missing data.
So any insights would be greatly appreciated! Is the OS X partition installed at the beginning of the hard drive? If so, that's the area of the platter(s) that has seen the most usage over the years, so it may have developed surface damage, affecting the reliability of reads and writes. This wouldn't necessarily cause a difference in operational noise coming from the drive. One partition may continue functioning normally, while the other one occupying a bad area of the drive continues to have errors. The problem with copying files from a quirky drive is that you can likely duplicate the same corrupted files as were found on the original. If time is of no consequence, you could erase that partition and install Tiger again, but I'd use the original installer disk and not clone from the problematic partition. I had a 40 GB drive in a beige G3 that would cause unexpected system hangs. Because Drive Setup's Test Disk function and NDD's Media Scan would hang after a few minutes into the process, I estimated the problem area to be within the first 2 GBs of the drive. My solution was to create (3) partitions, with the first one set to 2 GBs, and the second and third partitions equally dividing the remaining drive capacity. With Drive Setup, I de-selected the "Mount on Startup" option for partition 1, so it disappeared from the desktop. I installed the OS on the second partition and designated the third for file storage. With that partition configuration, the G3 never had the unexpected system hangs that had plagued it previously.
