Startup from 10.4.3 to 9.2.2...collapse

Hi, any help will be apreciated...
I have a PB pismo G3 400, 2 FW, 60gb HD and 750 Ram, HD with 2 partitions, 40 and 20. On the 40gb I have installed OSX.4.3 and the smaller the 9.2.2.
I do use OS10.4.1 and 9.2.2 normally, recently I updated to 10.4.3. I got back home from a trip in Africa and tried to restart with 9.2.2. Startup asked me wich of both 9.2.2 OS I wanted to use (It should be just one) I decided the first of 2. At teh rebooting process it stoped and gave me a message like... "original software can not be removed from folders, it msu be on originary disc, please restart again) and like this never ending.
Then I realized, that may be for space problems I did remove in and out from a diferent folders the 9.2.2 sistem, while i was traveling.
Then I restart the PB in firewire module... I did had access to the partitions. I decided to delete all Operative Sistem installed on the smaller partitions, presuming that computer would reboot searching for a operative sistem at the other biggers partitions choosing 10.4.3... no success, it is still asking me to reboot from 9.2.2.
Now the latest is that I can not mount the partitions anymore. I can see them with utility tool, but not mount them...
Any suggestions? Any help how to restart or reboot with X sistem... C Key and dvd update grade software does not work. X key and choose startup disk, does not work... no chances with keyboard other than firewire modul... but now is not mounting the module...
Thanks in advance for any help...of course, I have some documents that I need to recover from it...otherwise, I wouldn't be desperate.
Edu

Try holding down the Option key at power on.
You should get a solid blue screen 2 buttons, one containing a circular arrow and the other with an arrow pointing to the right. The mouse cursor should be a spinning watch.
After some time, the pointer should turn back to the usual arrow, and you should see a hard drive icon with the old OS X logo (a blue X in a white circle.) You may also get another HD icon with the OS9 logo.
click the OSX icon, then the arrow that points to the right.
This should boot to OS X. Once there, go to the system disk control pane and set the default boot folder to OS X.
If you get no icons, click the circular arrow and wait for the system to rescan the drives for bootable systems.

  • Can't startup from OS9 retail install disk on iMac G3 DV

    Hi All,
I'm trying to bring my old iMac DV (slot load) back to life and am having a problem trying to install OS9 from the retail install disk (I don't have the original disks that came with the system). Hardware-wise, all is ok with the iMac. However, when I try to start the system from the OS9 install CD (by holding down C during startup) the machine refuses to start from the CD. The disk is is good shape and I am able to startup from CD if I use any of my OSX install disks, but I can't get it to start for the OS9 install disk. As I said, it is the retail version of OS9 so I don't know if that has something to do with it.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks - Josh

    Hi, Josh -
An iMac DV (Slot Loading) model originally came with OS 8.6, which means that it should be able to use any version retail OS 9 Install CD (white label with gold 9).
Since it boots okay to an OSX install disk, that the machine's firmware has almost certainly been updated, and that the optical drive is okay. Nonetheless, I would suggest using an audio CD cleaning disk in the drive to clean its lenses.
That pretty much leaves the OS 9 Install CD as the problem. Check it carefully - unlike audio disks, the Mac is far more fussy about a data disk such as an install CD. Make sure there are no scratches, no smudges or dirt on it at all.

  • How can I startup from my hard drive instead of Darwin/BSD screen?

    Hi,
I have read most of the forum that was discussed regarding about the darwin/bsd screen. I still can not find the solution to solving my problem.
After using the Disk Warrior disc as a startup to fix the directory, and restarting the computer. It startup from the Disk Warrior disc again. After i took out the disc, this is when the darwin/bsd screen appears.
    I had tried the following:
pressing OPTION KEY while it boots up, still wont recognize the HD
pressing C KEY while it boots up, still wont recognize the HD
pressig the SHIFT key while it boots up, still wont recognize the HD
Also, I had misplaced the disk utility disc..
can someone tell me how to resolve this situation..
    desepartely seeking help

    Hi!
I am not sure if you have seen this solution to Darwin/BSD screen, but it has worked for others: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=320663&start=15&tstart=0
If Option booting does not get you to boot off your external boot drive there a couple of things I can think of:
    1. Hold down the "X" key from a cold start while you hit the power button.
    2. Boot from the Installer CD, then go to the Installer Menu and choose startup drive.
    3. A third, for good measure. It never hurts to Reset the PRAM, and often helps. Reset PRAM (from a cold start hold down Command + Option + P + R while hitting the power button and holding for 3 chimes. Release and allow to boot.
Hope at least one of these help.
    Good luck.

  • MacBook fell, doesn't startup from DVD; hard drive remplacement necessary?

Hi, my son's MacBook fell and now it doesnt start up anymore, there's only a grey screen and a question mark.
Tried to startup from the 10.6 DVD, with C-key held down > no reaction, DVD is spit out.
Tried to startup from the 10.5 DVD (was originally bought with 10.5), and it reacts to that in that it asks for which language to use, but at the Select A Destination-window, the window stays blank: it can't find the hard drive it seems.
My brother in law says it will likely need a new hard drive. If so, what type to use and can I install it myself (once did so with a 10.3 iBook)?
From this computer I don't know the specifics (how many GB or RPM). Somebody else bought it.
    thanks in advance!

    >something tiny fell out as well. It went so fast, I'm not sure what it was, but I did see a tiny flat metal ring (4 mm or so)<
It's possible something associated w/ the hard drive/connector got broken when it fell. So search carefully for any other part that could have come out when you pulled the HD out, even if it's a tiny piece of broken plastic. Then could you put up a picture of that ring and what ever else you find? I'm pretty familiar w/ most parts in a MacBook and that part/s might be a clue to what got broken when it fell.
Also check the serial number and run it at:
    http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html
The serial number is located on a sticker in the bottom of the battery well.
    >(once did so with a 10.3 iBook)< Holy buckets! That's impressive and way, way harder that what's involved in replacing the HD in a MacBook!
So based on that impressive statement I'm going to say:
Depending on what kind of external you have (Is it roughly the same general size as the MacBook HD? I.E. laptop HD size.). You could pull the HD out of the external and put the MacBooks internal HD in there ( Since they're probably both SATA) and see if it spins up when you have the external plugged in an start up the computer. If they're not both SATA you'll have to buy a USB dongle. I've gotten them for as cheap as $14.
If it spins up select it and try to boot from it. If it boots there then something broke as above.
If no spinup then HD probably toast. I've been able to get these running by tapping on one that wouldn't spin but if you try that be ready to clone it immediately. If you get it to spin up that way try not to move/disturb it, see if it mounts. If so clone it immediately. So you'll need to be ready w/ Data Rescue or Super Duper and have enough space available to clone it to something.

  • Kernal Panic after update to 10.4.6/Missing HD Space/Won't Startup from DVD

Sorry to lump three problems together, but they may all be related.
First - I was getting random Kernal Panics while at 10.4.5, so I attempted to update to 10.4.6. The computer wouldn't even come close to starting up. I got a screen full of Kernal Panic info. I reinstalled Tiger 10.4.3, and that's where the system stands now. It's running fine.
Second - My computer suddenly announced that the startup drive was out of disk space. I looked and the window said 30g. I closed the window and opened it again only to see it at zero k. I dumped some items to get some disk space, but now I can't get my 30g back.
Third - I want to startup from the Tiger disk like I did when I reinstalled, but it won't startup from the DVD. I'd like to run Disk Repair on the main hard drive. It showed some errors when I ran a Test using the Disk Utility.
I'm hoping this is all related. The computer seems to be running fine, but I can't update or find my missing space. Any advice I can get on these issues would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Jon

Is your computer saving a panic.log after each of the kernel panics? You can see by opening Console (in /Applications/Utilities) and looking for it. I'm not at my Mac now, so I can't tell you under what section to look for that log.
When you try to boot from the CD, are you holding down the 'C' key as the computer reboots? You can also try rebooting with the Option key pressed, which will present you with a list of bootable volumes. It will also give you access to the Apple Hardware Test (if this is the DVD that came with the computer). If you can select the Apple Hardware Test, I'd recommend doing the Extended Test, which will test the hardware, including the RAM.
For the disappearing disk space, you could have some process that is going bezerk and filling up the log files. In any event, to see where you disk space is being used, download and run Omni DiskSweeper.

  • How to startup from CD, if CD not in drive?

i bought a brand new Mac Pro, and i have not turned it on yet.
on my first power-up of this machine, i want to startup from my system CD (instead of the internal system drive it shipped with)
how do i do this, since the CD is not IN the machine at present, and i have no way to open the tray w/out starting up the machine
i.e. if i hold down "C"with no CD, will the drive open to let me insert the CD OR will the machine default to the built-in HD instead?

Assuming you have a USB connected keyboard, hold the "Option" key while powering up the system. This should bring you up into a mode that allows you to select your boot device. Insert your CD/DVD media now.

  • Cannot startup from disk

I have a disk error on my HD, but I cannot get the machine to startup from the Tiger Install disk or the Techtool Deluxe disk. I have tried (repeatedly...) holding the 'C' key down on startup, but no luck. I went to the Genius Bar today, and the technician helped my fix another problem, and told me that on intel Macs, you have to hold down the 'D' key. Still no luck.
Am I doing something wrong, or do I have another problem?

The D key is held if you want to run hardware test from the DVD. You hold down the C key to boot from the DVD drive. Try booting and holding down the opton key. This will let you see what all drives are bootable. It should show the DVD drive as a boot option with the install disk in.

  • Cannot startup from Tiger installer DVD or any other CD

When I try to startup from a system CD , DVD, or Diskwarrior CD the system folders on the external media will not mount.

I have yet to see an Apple update that is responsible for an OS X installer not booting a computer.  The installer discs are self contained with their own bootable system.  It is independent of what may be installed on the hard drive.
I've been involved in beta testing Tiger updates as well as several security updates for Panther.  I have not run into a "bad Apple Update" problem.  It is possible to get a bad download, however, but that's not a problem with the updates themselves.
Just because other users experience similar problems does not always mean the problem is with OS X or OS X updates.  Many times the problem is with poorly maintained or corrupted systems that are not repaired before updates are applied.  Inexperienced users are frequently their own worst enemy.  Also keep in mind that for every user posting a problem on the Discussions, there are thousands having no problems whatsoever.

  • Startup from firewire dive

Hi. My Mac has been making worrying noises recently tho the problem is intermittent. It sound like a disc drive is struggling or unbalanced. I reckon if it was the HD then it would have crashed so maybe it is the CD drive. ANYWAY, until I get it looked at I want to make sure I am able to startup from my firewire drive should the main HD crash. Therein the problem:
I know how to set the startup disk to my firewire drive in sys prefs (tested successfully) but I want to be able to use a startup manager key combination to startup from the firewire drive should the internal disc suddenly crash. I cannot work out how to do this. I have tried the following:
    1. hold down option key - seems to ignore startup manager and starts up from internal drive regardless
    2. hold down N - get network boot icon but pressing enter (no mouse control) does nothing - again it starts up from internal drive eventually.
    Where am I going wrong?
    Thanks, PP

Did you see the startup manager screen? This screen should come up no matter the state of the external drive.
I think that I saw the last time I booted my X cd that you can pick what disk you want to boot from. Maybe I am remembering classic.

Following these suggestions, I startup from the Install Disk holding down C. The installation process proceeds as far as "Checking disks..." (part of Select Destination) but hangs up there: the barbershop pole just spins and spins... What do I do next? This is on an old iBook BTW, 2001 G3, OS X, 10.1.2.

Likely, but can you try to erase it/format it?
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to get a good install.
Needs to be Apple Partition Map (APM) partition scheme.

  • Only see multiple disk icons at startup from disk

I disconected my G3 a few months ago and now reconected it and I can't get it to show anything on the desktop. I tried to startup from the Apple startup disk and only see the disk icons all over the screen. I can get to the help file which works and see my pointer but no extensions when starting up like usual.
I hear the HD spinning and sounds like the extensions loading but nothing on the screen. I know the monitor is working otherwise I wouldn't see the disk icons or the help file. I checked all connections and they are tight. I checked the battery and that's fine. I tried the P ram setting as well as rebuilding the desktop , still nothing. Any ideas?

Try a CUDA reset. See Mac PRAM, NVRAM, CUDA/PMU & Battery Tutorial

  • Startup from Installation DVD wont work

I am trying to start up from my OS X Tiger Installation DVD, inserting the disc, restarting the computer, while holding C down on the keyboard, but it is continually starting up in regular mode. How can I get this to work, as I need to repair my disk volume in disk utility, and must startup from install disc somehow...
    Thanks.
    G

Make sure the installation disk you are using is either the disc which shipped with your Mac or a newer retail version. The disc which shipped with your Mac has your Mac's model name on it. The disc which is retail is either labeled * or * Older retail discs, and discs which came with other Macs will not boot your Mac.

If Disk Utility cannot see your drive it doesn't look good.
You could try DiskWarrior. It is expensive but can often fix directory structures where DU cannot.
Replacing the drive is also a strong likelihood. If you don't have a fairly recent backup, then it might be worth buying DiskWarrior

  • After installing Yosemite beta on external drive, Mavericks doesn't startup from the internal drive

    Hi,
After I installed OS X Yosemite Beta on my external hard drive, my Macbook Pro no longer recognises and boots from the Mavericks partition on my internal drive. instead, it starts up the Yosemite installer even when the external drive is not connected.
And when holding the option key during startup, it shows 2 partitions: "OS X Installer" (that I've not created) and "Recovery-10.9.5". However from the system preferences in Yosemite, the partition is shown as a startup disk. and also i can see the Macintosh HD partition and its contents in Yosemite.
Any idea how to make it boot normally when turning on the macbook? any help appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Try this:
    Go to "System preferences"
    Click on " Boot-up Disk" (4th row)
Select the disk you want to boot
    Restart the computer

  • Won't startup from CD

My PPC iMac will not startup with the CD holding down "C" or from holding down the option key, then selecting the CD and hitting enter. Any way I try it, it goes straight to the regular HD startup.
I see I could select the CD as startup in the system preferences panel, but I'm afraid that if I did that, it might not work, then forget to go back to the HD to start up and I would be with a computer that couldn't find any startup.
All I was trying to do was repair permissions from a non boot drive to my HD, but this has become quite a test now...any thoughts?

OK, then that's what I'll try - choose the CD in System Preferences as the startup and reboot...
Odd though why holding down C or choosing it from the options (option startup) would not go to the CD?
I've repaired permissions on my internal (startup) tons of times no problems - though right now I'm having problems with Safari choking on all Flash websites. (I have a thread on this in the Safari section). After doing a zillion things to try to find out why, it's been suggested to repair off of a different startup - the CDs.

  • Kernel panic at startup from HD and disc

    Hi
My (early 2008) Mac Pro recently froze and wouldn't boot from the HD. I managed to start it once from a Snow Leopard install disc and carry out a disk repair on the HD. Now it won't boot from the HD or the install disc. When I try to boot it from HD it freezes, and when I try to boot it from CD I get a kernel panic. Dont have the original install disc so can't run Apple Hardware Test. But did manage to boot in target disc mode fine and get the kernel panic logs:

Guessing I have a hardware issue, but seems to be 2 different problems when I boot from HD or install disc. Can anyone tell me what these logs mean/
    Thnx
    Simon

I am having the same problems as Simon_S, except, so far, nothing is fixing things.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 on my first HD, and Snow Leopard on the second. The third drive is empty ATM, and the 4th is my old HD from my G5.
I can access Ubuntu the way I always have (option key, choose drive, select Ubuntu on GRUB.) I can only start up SL by going to the GRUB like I would for Ubuntu, but choosing Mac OSX instead.
The comp freezes if I try to just start up by pressing the power button, or if I press option and choose the Mac drive. Same for if I go to Startup Disk in System Preferences, choose the Mac HD and restart.
I have done a PRAM reset (after which the opening "ding" is louder, for some reason) as well as an SMC reset.
I've uninstalled Parallels through the terminal, to try to make sure it's all gone.
Trying to start up the install disk causes a kernal panic.
Trying to run a hardware test causes a freeze. If I'm still holding the "D" key when it freezes, I hear a tapping noise.
The computer freezes when trying to start up in safe mode. I THINK I'm giving it enough time. The spinning gear/sun thing is replaced by a bar, which fills to about 1/4 to 1/3 full, then stops. I wait a few minutes, but when nothing progresses, I shut it down.
Disk Utility claims that all of the drives are ok, but Ubuntu's scan gives me a "value" on the error read rate that is definitely NOT zero, so I'm thinking there is a problem with the HD the Mac OS is on. The "value" on the Ubuntu HD is zero.
Prior to my start up problems, I was wrestling with graphics/video card issues on Ubuntu. Those haven't been resolved yet. I've stopped messing with those while I try to figure out what is going on now. I'll leave out the details for now, but if you think they might be relevant, let me know.
While in SL the way I currently start it up, I can't put the computer to sleep. In Ubuntu, I can't start back up from suspend.
On SL, the system is not detecting any sound devices, in or out.
I'm limited on what I can do as far as fixing things. Funds are short, and I don't have the Extended Care. This comp is a hand-me-down after my dad got one of those new macs that are all in the monitor.
I'm hoping for any input or advice I can get. Is the Mac HD FUBAR? Could I format it from the Ubuntu HD and install SL through the Ubuntu terminal? Whatever I end up doing, I have to come out of this with a working machine. Dad's not going to be moving up to a new machine for at least 3 years (his usual time frame :P) and if this thing croaks, I'm stuck sharing my husband's Windows machine again. Please save me from Windows!
