Startup Items sound (not the chime)

Hi.
I'm used to keeping sound files in the startup items folder in Classic so my machine tells me when everything's ready to go, but this doesn't work in OS X.
What will work is to add an aiff under the Startup Items in the User account. But when I do this it uses iTunes to play it. It starts up iTunes.
Is there a way to get the file to play without starting an application, like you could in Classic?

You could try the following: Open the folder that contains the sounds you are talking about and choose "Select All" from the edit menu or "Command+A" will do the same thing. Now, select "Get Info" or Command+I and a small pop-up window will appear at the left. Click the small arrow next to "Open With" and it will show you the default application associated with those files. Does it show iTunes as the program to open those files? From the Default menu, Choose Quicktime, this will change all the file Icons to QT, then restart and see if things change.

The simplest way to transfer everything is to copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer.

Adding an effect to a sound, not the entire track

Hey All, I am looking to simply add a effect to a single sound, not the entire track, is that possible with Logic? I am coming from pro tools, and I know I was able to do that there, I was hoping I could do the same here. Thanks so much!

By add effect, I assume you mean add some delay or reverb one one particular note or word. Several ways to do this. Put the effect plug-in on a bus return, and then automate the send level to come up/down for that one incident.
Another way would be to make a 2nd track (audio or midi), Insert the effect on that track, and cut the phrase or note, and move down to that 2nd track. So the whole track would be dry, and that one word, note, would have the effect on the next track.
Make sure levels are similar

We have bought an Apple TV, and have downloaded the sky sports app. We are trying to watch this via airplay, but we are only managing to get the sound, not the picture. Any ideas??

Sky do not allow the app to work with Airplay.You will only get sound.

Firefox opens at startup on my iMac. It is not in startup items and not checked to open at login.

There aren't really any more details to add. I have checked everything I can think of in the Library folder and thrown out anything I thought might affect it. Firefox is not set as my default browser.
I have read many threads of people having this problem both here and on the Apple Support site. Most seem to be solved by unchecking "Open at Login" in the Dock icon or removing Firefox from the Startup Items in the System Preferences. Neither applies here. HELP!!! I like Firefox and use it from time to time but it seems the only way to stop this behavior is to remove it from my computer, which I will do if a solution can't be found.

Yes. I checked all of the places I could think of and those mentioned in the threads I read. Login items is what I was referring to when I said, "removing Firefox from the Startup Items in the System Preferences".

Validation to ensure 2 items are not the same

I have a form where I want to set up a validation to ensure 2 different items do not contain the same value. I've tried to do a page level validation using different validation methods but can't get anything to work. Not sure if it has to be an sql expression or item string comparision. Severe startup problems (sounds like the hard drive is done.)

Hey all,
Last night, I attempted to wake my iMac out of sleep mode. The screen prompting me for my username and password came up, and I entered in my password. After pressing enter, the system hung and all I saw was the colored spinwheel.
I shut off the machine, and restarted it. I still hear the Mac start-up sound, but the system hangs at the grey Mac loading screen with the twirling circle. After a few moments, I can hear the fans kick on, and they're louder than ever.
After a few times of restarting the machine, and letting it hang, the grey screen eventually faded away and a new screen, a black screen with white lettering (very similar to DOS), came up and gave me the following text:
"diskOs3: I/O Error.
/etc/master.pssword: Input/Output error
diskOs3: I/O Error.
-sh:/etc/profile: Input/Output Error

-sh-2.05b#"
As you can see, I'm pretty dumbfounded by this. After looking at this screen for a couple minutes, I tried typing on my keyboard and saw that like DOS, I could type commands. I tried typing "exit" and after I pressed enter, a little text box featuring "LOGOUT" came up. But nothing happened.
Anyway, this is my situation. I've tried resetting the PRAM, and since I have a Rev-2, I don't have to manually reset the SMU or whatever it is.
If worse comes to worse, I still have my Apple Care warranty (I purchased it less than a year ago.) I would definitely prefer to not lose all my data, though.

I just wanted to follow up with this. I had to do a fresh install of Mac OS X, which is unfortunate. I got all my music and movies and such from my other Mac computer, including some key programs.
That was 5 days ago.
Today, I installed Photoshop CS and attempted to launch it for the first time. As the program was initializing, it hung. Not figuring this was anything to worry about, I tried force quitting the program but it didn't work. The entire system had locked up. I turned off the computer, and turned it on again, and surprise: I had the same problem. The hard drive crashed.
So...this has happened twice in two weeks. What's going on here? The hardware tests show nothing wrong with the hardware; surely, it's got to be something right?
I did the smart thing this time and backed up all my essential programs and files in case this happens a 3rd time. If it does happen a 3rd time, I'm going to give Apple a talking to. I love their products, but something fishy is going on here.

Another possible remedy is to open Garage Band, if it is installed on your system. Then restart the computer/Safari and see if the sound returns.

Startup items options not found under user name

I'm sure this has been covered before, but I couldn't find an exact match.
Under the accounts setup-one of the profiles does not have "Login Items" as an option, only has Password, Picture, and Parental Controls. I have full access as administrator to all accounts. How do I get the Login Items Options to show up?
On a larger issue, the reason I would like to access the user account login items is to turn on DirectfonfigX for that login, the particular login will not work with a DVI connection. (Display may be set to VGA, I don't recall the exact reason why it does not work with the same DVI connection as normal login user. they are basically the same user profiles, but I can access some software under one user that the other user will not recognize that I have registered my software, or profile settings. But perhaps that is an even larger issue.)

Just ran a test here--Login Items are only available for the currently logged in account (owner of the keyboard/mouse/display). You'll have to log in as each of those users and set the login items appropriately. Seems that an admin should be able to set these but not so.

Total of line items in line item file not the same as in statement file

Can anyone give an idea about this error?
I analysed teh multicash file for the totals and line items total ties out with the statement total and formats of the file also seem to be fine.

You should give the exact message, with message number.
If it is FB 777, "DTAUS: Number of line items not equal to control total; see long text", you should see the long text. I think it contains sufficient information:

Intermittent loss of sound (not the video/sound problem)

I just got my third ipod (30G ipod with video) two days ago and I've encountered an issue.
Twice so far, after pausing my ipod for 10-15 minutes and then going to resume, I have lost all sound output. The first time it happened, the ipod showed progress in the song - but the second time, although the icon showed that it was playing, there was no movement in the progress bar.
All menu functions work properly and promptly - it's not just a freeze. I tried four different sets of headphones, all with the same result. The only thing I have not yet determined is whether the problem appears when the ipod is docked and audio is not going through the headphone port.
A reset seemed to resolve the problem, but I don't much relish the idea of having to reset the thing every day, especially when I have a 4G color that has NEVER had to be reset. This happens in regular audio mode (I know an issue exists with sound and video synchronization, but that hasn't been my problem).
I am considering rolling the firmware back to 1.0, but I am wondering if the problem might not be either related to the hard disk or even the headphone jack itself (each time the problem manifests, it has been after headphones were removed and later replaced.)
Any ideas, or is this a known issue? A quick search here and at ilounge yielded mostly discussions about the video sync problem. Any help would be appreciated!

I say nearly because my problem doesn't exhibit itself every time or I would have taken it to the Apple store and showed them. But this problem of yours sounds alot like mine. I used to think it was related to charging it hence the title on my first thread. But now I too think it's related to the ear plug jack. There is something about the sensor in it and the fact that it is a plug that has like 3 or 4 outputs, I wonder if the seating of the plug has to be right or it shorts out something just enough to screw up the audio. My second thread suggests my problem is related to the case I use which has material around the hole but not covering it. You insert thru the hole in the case and into the hole in the jack. The seating may not be 100% which may cause issues. You didn't mention a case...does yours have one?
Like you, I too had to soft reset the ipod to get it out of this wierd mode. Someone else suggested that when it happens turn off the ipod, pull out the plug, then re-plug it in, turn on the ipod. I have lately found that most of the time if I just unplug and replug the jack it clears the problem. I haven't had it fail enough times to see if this solution will fail or not. See if it helps your situation.

Looking through the thread, it seems like several different problems all manifesting themselves in the same way. Some people had to disable hardware acceleration in Flash, others had to delete their profile, and others yet just had to clear their cache... makes no sense.

How can I sync only checked items and not the whole album?

I only want say three songs out of an album but it syncs the whole thing. How do I change that?

Don't create a playlist for three songs.
Either uncheck those songs or a much better way is to create a playlist (or a few) of songs you want on the iPod the sync only those playlists.
To add/delete from the iPod, simply add/delete from those playlists.

I restarted and attempted to open Outlook.
Outlook will not open.

An Older version of the Microsoft Databse Daemon is running.
To Open Outlook, First delete the daemon from the Startup Items, then restart the computer.
How do I accomplish this if Microsoft will not open?
