Startup key combinations on Intel iMac WITHOUT original keyboard

None of the startup key combinations (like C to boot from CD) work on my iMac using the new aluminum keyboard I bought (instead of the white plastic one which had come with it).
Is there a way around this?
Thanks.

Did you install the software as instructed in the user documentation that came with the keyboard?
Is the keyboard plugged directly into a USB port on your iMac?

  • Startup key combinations...

    Hi all,
I installed Lion this week and now I can't use any startup key combinations on my mid 2010 iMac. I have a wireless keyboard. They used to work under Snow Leopard. I wanted to use Option on startup to see my bootable disks, but no key combinations are now recognised. I would reset the PRAM, but I can't because of this problem. Any ideas? Thankyou. Andy.

I answered my own problem -
It still works, you just have to be a LOT more accurate with the timing. I managed to reset the PRAM and use the OPTION key to reveal the rescue partition that Lion creates. Took me 3 or 4 tries though.
    Hope this helps somebody.
    Andy.

Can not start up on my Macbook pro. All I get is a grey spinning wheel. Tried all the Startup key combinations and nothing works. I reset the NVRAM and nothing. I booted with start up disk , ran disk repair and all is ok. Tried to re-install OS but when I get to designating drive its blank. When I go to startup disk there is a "?" mark. When I restart under startup disk search for a drive it still comes up with nothing.  Before I got the grey spinning wheel I had a locked screen. Could not move curser or click on anything. Finally just shut down. Thank you in advance for any help!

Shouldn't still have a 'beachballing'... if the drive is being found and the system is trying to boot from it but is having problems, I would suggest looking over ds store's user tip - Step by step to fix your Mac.
It's likely either something corrupt in your system files or a failing hard drive. But follow ds's steps until you find the cause of the problem.
    Good luck,

  • How to install latest mac OS x on iMac without original dvd

hi. I have imac Intel based and early 2008 model. I used Yosemite in it... I erased the Whole HDD.. Now it shows flashing folder icon with question mark..i don't have original DVD or internet connection.. My friend has mac book pro running Yosemite... He also got dmg files of Yosemite and other versions... He created usb bootable disk and it was working with his computer.... Can I use the same USB drive to clean install Yosemite on my computer? If not what are my options... Please help me..i kept iMac without any OS for two weeks... Thanks in advance...

No. You cannot install software downloaded by someone else from the App Store. You can use a USB flash drive to install Yosemite, but only the one you have. Since you did not keep yours, I assume, then you cannot create a flash drive installer. You need the Snow Leopard retail DVD.
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
Or you can purchase replacement discs from Apple if they still have them:

  • Startup key combinations with bluetooth keyboard?

In Lion, accessing the recovery partition entails holding down the command-R key combination at startup. Selecting a startup disk and starting up in Safe Boot mode also require holding key combinations at startup.
But under Lion and a bluetooth keyboard, none of these key combinations work. A wired keyboard works fine, but I no longer have one.
A friend who downloaded and installed Lion today just called and asked how he can do this with HIS bluetooth keyboard, so this seems to be a general concern.
    Any tips? Thanks!

Some PC keyboards may map it to the Windows key, but on most it should be ALT.

  • Startup key combination to reinstall lion (command   G ?)

Does anyone know the startup key combo to get the reinstall option for Lion. I think it may be command + G or command + F ?

Are you talking about the recovery partition included? that would be Commmand + R or, if that does not work, simply holding Option should bring up the Startup Manager from which you can then choose the Recovery HD.

  • Startup key combination does not work

    Hi all,
Not quite sure what I have done...
    Received my MacBook Pro today...
I installed 10.4.8, installed boot camp 1.1.1, set a partition of 10 GB for windows and in the partition manager of the XP setup I deleted what I thought was a 100 odd MB partition and I installed XP on the 10GB partition boot camp made for me.
Done what I needed to do in XP and tried to boot up in my Mac OSX by holding down the option key on startup. Then I was presented by a screen with a Padlock image and a password box. I typed in the only password I had created for my OSX and that didn't work. So I tried using the install disc 1 by holding down the C key while booting up, it didn't work, it just boots in XP. Also the D key and other start up keys don't seem to work. I have spend all night looking for some post mentioning this but it seems that this is the only case.
    Any ideas????
    Cheers

Sounds as though you may have deleted your OS X partition from the XP partition manager?
Did you activate File Vault in OS X? I've been using Macs for years and don't encourage people to use File Vault, as so many things become impossible to remedy if anything goes wrong.
Nevertheless, if you insert your Installation Disc 1 and start up while holding down the C key, you should be able to boot from Disc 1. If that can't be done, you will need to call Apple.
If you did manage to boot up from the installation disk, I would suggest that you simply do a total zero erase and start over, with a fresh installation of OS X.

  • How can I delete previous owners ID from iMac without original media?

    Hi there,
Hope someone can help me as I'm relatively clueless!
We have purchased a 2nd hand iMac from Amazon and have been trying to download from the Mac App Store, we both have Apple IDs but when we are trying to download/purchase an app that was previously downloaded by the last owner it is only giving us the option to Accept and not purchase, after signing in it then gives us the error message that it has already been downloaded to the previous ID and if we want to download it we need to re-purchase it, which is fine.
So my question is how do we do this? we did not get any original media in the box so cannot factory reset and redownload.
Fingers crossed someone has the answer as I'm itching to get on and use the machine!!
    Thank you in advance,
    Vicky.

    Hi Vicky ...
Since this is a 2nd hand iMac, you can reformat the drive by using Lion Recovery
That will delete all the personal data from the previous owner so you can start fresh from factory settings.
we did not get any original media in the box so cannot factory reset and redownload.
New Macs do not come with optical media.

  • Open Firmware startup keys not responding

    Hi there,
My Command-Option-O-F combination at powerup is not responding to get me into the Open Firmware.
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers,

Intel Macs do not support Open Firmware rather they use the EFI - extended firmware interface. You can start up in safe mode, single-user mode, or verbose mode. See the following:

  • New Keyboard Will Not Work for Power On Key Combinations

I have a early 2006 model iMac with 20" display. I had to purchase a new keyboard and bought one of the new wired tactile Apple keyboards. I've upgraded to Leopard and also have the most current keyboard update to support this keyboard. Tonight I got into a situation where I needed to boot my machine holding down the "Option" key in order to select a startup partition. It did not work. I finally went and got an old keyboard off another Mac, plugged it into my iMac and powered the machine up holding the option key. They screen appeared allowing me to select the partition and I was off and running. What I have noticed is the new keyboard will not allow me to perform any of the startup key combinations like the ones for booting from a CD, or ejecting a disk, etc. Is there some driver or something I'm missing? • ID2 on Intel iMac 10.5.4

Will ID2 (not CS) run on a 2.6 Gb Intel iMac with OS 10.5.4. I remember seeing early on that it would have problems on Intel iMac, but have also heard it runs ok in that environment. Anyone using it with a Intel iMac without problems.

I can safely say that ID 2.0 (CS = ID 3.x) will run on an Intel Mac running OS 10.4.11. I haven't tested it for stability, but it runs.
I am not sure about OS 10.5.x
Considering that ID2 was build during the transition of OS 9 and OS 10.0, your experience may be less than ideal. Time to upgrade.
Unfortunately, the time to upgrade for a relatively low cost has come and gone.

  • What usb keyboards are compatible with the Intel iMac

Please can someone tell me what USB Apple Keybouards are compatable with the intel Imac
    howard

Some PC keyboards may not work with the Mac. Especially, specialty gaming keyboards will not work with Macs and OS X.  Some PC keyboards are designed to specifically work with newer versions of Windows at that's it!
They may not even work as a basic keyboard, but not entirely sure.
I know for a fact specialty gaming keyboards do not work at all on a Mac because there have been posts here from gamers who tried to use special gaming keyboards and mice and they would not function on a Mac.
If you know anyone with a Mac, ask them if they have a spare Mac keyboard you can try before buying.
    Good Luck!

  • Is it possible to boot into the OSX DVD Without a keyboard?

    Hi everyone,
Today I found a WORKING 800mhz PowerMac G4 Quicksilver (2002) at my local thrift shop for $15. Hard Drive was skipping and I had a 160GB hard drive laying around, so took the bad hard drive out and now it works, at least it has been. But heres the problem. My USB keyboard (My only one, btw) doesn't work when I start it up so when I press the power button and hit C nothing happend because my USB keyboard isn't working with it for some reason. Is there a way I can boot into the Mac OS X Startup disc to install the OS without a keyboard?
    Thanks,
    Erik

    Hi, might also try this...
reset FW bus, same goes for USB reset...
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.
