Startup Manager Cursor not displaying

Hi All,
Startup manager is hanging on launch whereby the cursor stays as the ticking clock and does not become a regular working cursor so I can't click the buttons to select the drive I want for start up. I have to hard restart to get out of this.
I am using 10.4.1 and am trying to select an external drive as my startup volume to do some repairs on my internal drive so that I can then update to 10.4.9
Any thoughts?

Yes, I finally thought of that after thinking back to how we did it in OS 9. I guess the only time the start up manager would/could come in handy would be if the main HD goes down? Or if you have a second internal mirror drive (SuperDuper) I wonder if startup will automatically jump to the next available drive?

I have a macbook pro and It will not boot all the way it gets stuck at the blue background screen with my airport icon and gmail icon in the upper right and get nothing else. I have tried every solution I can find and nothing has worked. I wanted to try to reinstall osx but cannot boot from the cd. I have tried holding c on boot and also holding option but startup manager only shows the macintosh hd. I also tried connecting an external usb cd drive and got the same result. Is there another way force it to boot from the cd.

Tough without the Tiger Disk problems, but try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
    1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
(SPACE between fsck AND -fy important)
    3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:

The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
    4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.

  • The Add-ons Manager will not display!

I've been having an intermittent problem with certain features not displaying at all. First it was that I could not "Customize" my toolbar for quite a while. It finally returned suddenly, in FF v4.01, after being unavailable since v3.5.
I've also been without the Magnifying Glass search icon since v3.5, which is still missing. And the show "Properties" option has also disappeared from the Right-Click Context menu, I don't remember if it started in FF v3.x , but I think it was right after upgrading to v4, and it hasn't returned since either.
Now it's the Add-ons Manager that has quit working. It has happened a few times before, but quitting and restarting Firefox brought it back.
This time, however, it seems to be completely disabled. I had just removed the IE Tab Plus extension, to be sure I hadn't installed it over the original IE Tab, which they said could cause unpredictable issues.
Next I used "Install Extensions" from the File menu of the Add-ons Manager tab, and selected a copy of IE Tab Plus I had saved to disk last October 2010 to re-install it. But nothing seemed to happen. No pop-up, or any indication/notification that an extension was about to be installed - nothing.
So I did a search for IE Tab Plus to acquire the latest version from it's Mozilla Add-ons page, where I noticed a "Comment" claiming the IE Tab Plus author was using it to secretly install Ad-ware, and recommended using IE Tab 2 instead.
I decided to do as suggested, but there is no link on the page to install IE Tab 2 from either. I decided to quit and reload Firefox, yet even in Safe Mode, I still can not get the Add-ons Manager Tab to load.
    Note:
I also have Mr. Tech's cool Toolkit extension, which I believe added the "Extension Options" item to the Tools menu, and it is also empty now. It was not empty just before this. In fact it still displayed my extensions list after the Add-ons Manager had already failed to load again at all.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
This can be a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the files extensions.* (extensions.sqlite, extensions.rdf, extensions.cache, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox [[Profiles|profile folder]] to reset the extensions registry. New files will be created when required.
    See "Corrupt extension files": http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions
If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to do a compatibility check or see if there is an update.

  • MacBook Pro flashes file folder with question mark and startup manager will not run

My son's MacBook Pro won't boot (gets the flashing file folder with question mark).  When I try to open startup manager (holding "option" key during boot does not do it).  Other posts suggest inserting the install disk, but I am pretty sure that for Lion, there was no disk, it was just off the website through the App Store.  Any further suggestions?

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Startup Manager is not working

The startup manager doesn't boot when I start the computer while holding the option key. Even if there are no other volumes connected, it still doesn't show the startup manager screen (just main startup disk and recovery).
I recently just reinstalled the OS via recovery mode (other unrelated problem, no biggie). I made a bootable clone with Carbon Copy Cloner, to a bare harddrive of same capacity via a FW800 dock. Booting with the clone via System Preferences isn't a problem. But the Start + Option route doesn't work.
I'm thinking it's the graphics card that I have, a GTX 680 (not flashed for Mac). Because the card hasn't been flashed I don't get the gray screen with Apple logo screen, it goes straight to the Login Page. Not a problem for me, but maybe this is the reason?
    Specs:
    Mac Pro 5,1 2.4 GHz 12 core
GTX 680 - latest Nvidia Web Driver and CUDA Driver
    10.8.5 - all updated
    Thanks

Try downloading the HP Support Assistant and running it. It should be able to detect any missing drivers for you.

  • Clone Stamp & Paintbrush cursor not displaying on image

    Hey there,
When attempting to edit a photo (on PS CS3), the cursor for the paintbrush and clone stamp tools does not display on the image - it'll come up when the mouse isn't directly over it (ie around the borders, & workspace etc, but not on the image itself).
All other tools the cursor will display (eg marque and crop etc).
Is anyone able to offer any help on the subject?
    Thanks very much.

If you are using a Wacom, keep the pen well away from the tablet when using the mouse and vice versa.
Try unplugging the Wacom – if the problem disappears, update the drivers.
    Or
Try resetting the tools from the little drop-down menu in the Options Bar.
If all else fails, try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.

  • Service Manager Portal not displaying VM console and related details

    Hi All,
We have deployed private cloud with system center products using Cloud Services Process Pack and we have deployed Service Manger portal for VM provisioning in Cloud
The Service Manger portal does not display VM console and VM details
    I have following queries
How to take remote console of VM deployed by end user through service manager portal
How will user come to know quota limit utilized in cloud under his account
The VM are deployed through SCSM portal are in shutdown state how to auto start the VM after provisioning
Please help since we are not able to find any solution for the above
Appreciate if any workaround is available for the same
    Thanks
    Manzoor Ahmed

The component of System Center that is capable to give console access to your VMs, is App Controller.
Once the user are logged in here, they should see their quota, limits and resources available.
Yes, the VMs are powered off by default when using the CSPP. You can edit the runbooks and add a task that will start them after provisioning.
    For your information:
Many things has changed since the release of Cloud Service Process Pack. A new set of tools are provided with Windows Azure Pack to have a streamlined Infrastructure as a Service offering within the enterprise. Windows Azure Pack will leverage VMM (in the
same way as SCSM does) but in conjunction with SPF (component within Orchestrator) to give you a framework that is identical to Windows Azure (Microsoft's own cloud) running on-premise.

  • Why my Startup Manager does not appear when I hold the Option key when starting to boot.

I no longer have the Startup Manager appearing when I hold the Option key when starting to boot.
Instead, the system just boots into whichever OS was last selected in the Startup Disk Preference.
How to get back my Startup Manager so that I can boot up from my external hard disk.
    Thank you.

Can you please run the following in terminal and post the output in your reply:
diskutil list; echo; nvram -p | grep boot-args; echo

  • HT1310 what if the startup Manager does not show up after having followed the steps above?

My Mac Book Pro showed a flashing file. I tried to go to the startup manager but if I press the start button and the option (ALT) key, I still only get a white screen. Instead of the flashing file I have now the mouse arrow. What to do?

I have the same issue with my computer right now..were you able to fix it by any chance?

  • Flash player settings manager does not display

This happens in both Safari 4.0.4 and Firefox 3.5.5. Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.8). I just get an empty white rectanglar space where the settings panel ought to be. Rest of the page (help, menu sidebar, etc) displays just fine. Happened with Flash Player 10.0.32, so I upgraded to 10.0.42. Same problem. In Firefox it happens even if I turn off NoScript.
I'm trying to access the settings panel at http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager02.htm l
Safari's Activity manager shows the error "expired server certificate" for
    https://www.macromedia.com/support/flashplayer/sys/settingsmanager2.swf?defaultTab=privacy
Firefox's Error Console does not seem to show that error. It merely spits out nearly 100 warnings about the page.
Page Info indicates the settings panel is embedded with dimensions of 0px x 0px
But Firefox has a non-encrypted panel:
    http://www.macromedia.com/support/flashplayer/sys/settingsmanager.swf
"The site www.macromedia.com does not support encryption for the page you are viewing."
I don't see anyone else reporting this problem. Any ideas about what could be blocking the panel from displaying that i can fix?

Just registering that I have the same problem as well.  Tried flash 10.0.42 on Firefox 3.5.5 and IE 8.  I had this problem on two seperate windows XP machines, both running SP 3.
Anyone have an idea as to what's up?

  • Design Manager - Name not displaying for MasterPage

    Hi,
When I navigate to my Design Manager and want to edit a master page, the "name" column is blank.  I am not able to edit the masterpage.  I am a site collection owner.
It's like it displays the wrong view.
    Thank you,
    Lorena

    Hi Lorena,
When you hover your mouse over the “…” and click “Open Menu”, could you see the title of Master page? If you click on the master page, could you see preview page and figure out the title in the url?
If you go to Site settings > Web Designer Galleries > Master Pages and page layouts, could you see the master pages’ titles?
There seems no view control in DesignMasterPages, aspx . In addition, please capture the screenshot for the issue for more clearly understanding.

Yes these fonts have one feature - see http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4279855.html
so you can check them by next way :
         GraphicsEnvironment ge = GraphicsEnvironment.
    getLocalGraphicsEnvironment();

         if (ge != null) {
              fonts = ge.getAllFonts();
