Startup or mounting problem?

My 27' imac froze while I was transferring photos from my external hard drive to my imac. I was using the Apeture program. I pressed the power button and the computer restarts with the wallpaper I chose and the finder bar appears, the mouse moves the cursor on screen, but clicking it does nothing.
I'll leave it alone and eventually the screen gets dimmer and pressing a key on the keyboard or moving the mouse, will "wake it up" again, but no keyboard buttons work. I notice the HD makintosh icon is not present on the desktop. I tried the hardware test and it found nothing wrong, then tried booting it up from the cd and that worked and the mouse works fine there. Tried the disk utility and it found nothing wrong with the disk. Chose my HD as the startup disk and same thing happens.

I just remembered this happened with my old imac and it was because you can't move thousands of pictures at once from one folder to another. Don't remember how I fixed that problem. Last night I did reinstall osx and did a repair of the disk and the computer was fine, but had the desktop filled with all the pictures I was in the process of moving. A dialog box appeared that said "To open HP IO Classic Proxy, you need to install Rosetta. Would you like to install it now?" I clicked yes and while it was installing, I clicked to arrange the icons on the desktop and it froze. I guess arranging 6,000 icons of pictures was a little to much for it. Anyway, I'm having the same problem again and tonight I reinstalled the osx, fixed the disk and it starts a little and then gets frozen.
I don't know what else to do.

  • Coping iso file and mounting problem

    Hi
I am using Windows 8.1 Update Enterprise 64 bit and Windows ADK.
I noticed that, if I select the "Environment of the deployment tools and creations images" and I click on the "Run as Administrator" item of his Pop-Up menu and I mount on a iso image of windows 8.1 Update, when I run the command
    robocopy <Drive_Letter>:\"<Windows_Files_Path>" /e
to copy all its files in a directory and the command
    dism /Mount-Image /ImageFile:"<Windows_Files_Path>"\install.wim /Index:<Image_Index> /MountDir:"<Mount_Directory_Path>"
to mount an image volume, this error appears:
    Error: 0xc1510111
Not have permission to mount and modify this image.
However, if I copy these files through the "file explorer" window, the mounting of this volume image is working properly. How come?
    Thanks
    Bye

I am unable to reproduce the issue above:

Additionally I can see that the original question asked was copied from this post 2 years ago:
    http://www.eightforums.com/installation-setup/54246-coping-iso-file-mounting-problem.html
    is this really your problem?
Really, this is not a MDT related question. perhaps a general Windows Setup forum would be a better place to ask this question.

  • 10.5.8 disk mounting problem

I updated to 10.5.8 and decided I would download the photoshop elements trial off Adobe's website. It was at 365 MB of 1.27 GB and it suddenly came up "mounting failed" I am currently trying to download it again, but my internet connection is slow so it will be awhile before I see if it happens again at 365 MB. Has anyone else had disk mounting problems in 10.5.8?

Speaking as someone who works a lot with PSE, I would say the odds are very high that this is an Adobe problem rather than a 10.5.8 problem. Wait a while and try the download again.

  • Narrowing down "iPod won't mount" problem

Regarding the "iPod won't mount" problem that has been posted a number of times: is anyone having this problem with a USB connection or just with a Firewire connection?
I'm using Firewire and can't get my iPod to mount. I don't have a USB connector for the iPod and I thought I'd do a little research on the problem before I go buy a USB connector.

My 4th generation Ipod would not mount with the firewire but worked fine with USB.

  • [MBA original] startup and disk problems

My old faithful Air has started to have some serious problems.
A couple of months ago, it started to behave sluggishly, beachballing in all applications, and then when I tried to restart, it wouldn't get past the logo/catherine wheel screen. I could get it to boot into Lion Recovery, where disk utility said that the disk could not be repaired. At this point I zeroed the disk (level one secure erase), restored from my Time Machine backup, and was up and running again - for a couple of days. Then the same symptoms recurred again, with the same results.
I began to suspect a failing hard drive, and had it replaced with a new one.
The Air worked fine since then, until a couple of days ago, when the sluggishness and beachballing recurred, followed by failure to start up. Again, I booted into Lion recovery, and ran Disk Utility again. This time it found many many problems with missing catalog entries, invalid nodes etc, and told me the disk could not be repaired. Once again I erased it (the new disk this time) and restored from a back. Last night, the symptoms recurred again. This time, though, when I got into Disk Repair, it found a similar list of errors, and it claimed to have repaired the disk (green status), but still it would not restart. I tried starting in safe mode, and the progress bar got about 1/3 of the way across, then disappeared and the machine would not start up. I tried starting with the D key held down but couldn't get hardware diagnostics running.
I'm beginning to suspect sofware causing disk issues rather than the disk itself, so I tried performing a clean install of Lion from Recovery. The machine started up OK after the clean install, (with my user account and files still intact, which suprised me - I was expecting to have to use Migration Assistant to get them back). At this point, I plugged in my Western Digital USB drive into the Air and copied all my documents and files onto it, in case I need to get at them without using the Time Machine backup. Then I shut the machine down.
This morning it has started up OK again, and I'm typing this on it right now.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any advice if you managed to fix it permamently?
Is it possible to run the hardware diagnostic from the original install disks for the Air system software? _Should_ I be able to get to hardware diagnostics by holding down D on startup on this model? If I've got Lion up to date installed, can I get to the internet version of hardware diagnostics via Lion Recovery, like on newer Airs?
If it happens again, my last ditch effort is going to be zeroing the disk, doing a clean Lion install on the erased disk, then just copying back my documents and reinstalling key applications (Office, Photoshop) from the original install disks/images. Does that sound like a sensible approach?
Otherwise, I'll have to try and talk my boss into letting me get a new one!
    best regards,
    Matt

If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will
need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk
    Warrior
DU can't repair and I got these errors:
    "Invalid B-tree node size"
"Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)"
DU didn't show the SMART status. But I saw it in Disk Warrior and it said the disk was ok.
I tried Disk Warrior and it's just be stuck at the same place. This never goes away and so I just killed it:
    "Rebuilding directory ...
Step 5: Locating directory data ..."
In DU when I highlight disk0s3, I get this in the lower left hand corner:
    "Mount Point: not mounted"
So maybe I just need to re-mount disk0s3?
    Anymore ideas, guys? Thanks.

  • Cluster /global/devices/node@X mount problem.

    Hi,
I have just installed sun cluster 3.2. It is a simple installtion and cluster contains only two servers and one sun storage.
After installation, i realised that the name of the metadevice on tha servers were the same, so only one of them mounted under /global/devices/node@X, and the other were didn't.
Then i re-create metadevice on the second node with another name. After re-creation /global/devices/node@X

    Thanks for the reply,
It used to be the same metaset name on the second server, which several folks have run into when installing SC on the 2nd node. So I renamed it when booted into no cluster mode using metarename. I then updated the /etc/vfstab with the new name, this is it in /etc/vfstab:
    /dev/md/dsk/d26 /dev/md/rdsk/d26 /global/.devices@2 ufs 2 no global
And yes if I change "global" to "-" then it mounts. When the 2nd node boots up, it cannot mount /global/.devices@2 with it set to global so the boot halts, I do ctrl-D to continue. Then I try a regular mount from root and I get the "no such file or directory" message.
If I do a metastat d26 it shows it to be OK on both submirrors.
The name of the metadisk on the first node is d160. And the 2nd server is able to mount that from the global option on the first server.
    Thanks,

  • ODD STARTUP AUTO MOUNTING.

I have two iMacs on my network running OSX10.5.7 I often share files between the two systems.
Whenever I start one of the iMacs it asks me to log into the other mac (it acually halts the startup process and waits for your response, ok or cancel.
If you choose OK, then it mounts the other computers shared HD on the desktop. If you say, cancel/no then the iMac will then continue starting up normally.
How can I stop this from happening? I've checked log-in items and dont see an auto mount scenario.. I am perplexed.
    HELP!
    Thank you!

    Hi,
I was having this problem, too. I saw your lonely response-less post, and now that I've solved the problem on my MBP, I wonder if your situation's the same.
I'd copied my Music folder to the MBP from my iMac using Migration Assistant. Turns out that this somehow confused my Login Item iTunesHelper. When I deleted it from the Login Items list, and then added it back in, the problem went away. I guess something in the migration had confused it. I don't really understand, but, hey, my problem's gone.
So, delete iTunesHelper from the Login Items list, click the + button, and then navigate to the iTunes app. The helper app is inside the iTunes package—the dialog will let you treat iTunes like a folder—I think it's in the Resources folder there. Select the iTunesHelper app, hit return, and there you go.
    Hope this helps.
If it doesn't, I'd consider other Migration Assistant items.

  • Yosemite 10.10.1: Finder/CIFS mount problem: wrong folder count/folders not shown @samba shares

    Hello to all,
we have several MacBook Pro (15" MBP Retina 2012/13"MBP Retina 2014) running. After upgrading to Yosemite 10.10.1 we had one nightmare after the other.
Most problems could be solved with 3rd party software upgrades but there are several problems with the operating system itselve which can not really  be called a professional productive system at the moment...
Ok., one thing after the other...here is one of our biggest problems:
After upgrading from Mavericks or Mountain Lion to Yosemite 10.10.1 the CIFS/SMB mounts to our samba 3.x servers, running on Ubuntu Linux LTS 12.04 makes trouble. We could mount the server shares but after browsing with the Finder the beach ball occures and the Finder hangs forever. Sometimes we could not refresh the Finder, killing the process ended in a complete hang-up of the system which ended in a switch off death blow. This is not amusing because we have 30Tb of customer data there, which has to be worked out.
We heard about the SMB3 protocol which will be used per default in Yosemite and so we decided after some testings to upgrate our Ubuntu servers to the latest LSF 14.04. release with samba 4.1.6 installed. There was no message from Apple for this SMB protocol release upgrade, never heard something related to Yosemite (Why?).
Ok, after these server upgrades and disabling most of the Spotlight functions the performance to the CIFS shares was a little bit better as before but now we have another problem with the Finder...if you browse to the shares there are folders missing which have lots of files in it. For example there is a folder with 60 subfolders and 3562 files on the first level in it, the Finder shows 220 files and 15 folders. The Terminal shows a different count with "find . -maxdepth 1 -type d | wc -l" or "find . -maxdepth 1 -type f | wc -l" but there is also a difference to the original file and folder count. It doesn`t matter if the clients are connected via WiFi or Gigabit Ethernet. We have no access problems. We have the same behavior if we set the files and folders to 0777 permissions on the servers. The deletion of the preferences files of the users on the MacBooks does not solve the problem. If we use the "Go To Folder" option and type the path to a folder which is not shown in the Finder you get an result or not. But it is also possible that the result is not correct and there are also still files or subfolders missing.
In my opinion this is a timeout problem and a "special SMB3 protocol interpretation" which is buggy. We have one hint found in /var/log/system.log:
    "Jan 23 14:35:49 wsosx33.clients.getcom.de KernelEventAgent[69]: tid 54485244 type 'smbfs', mounted on '/Volumes/customersdata2015', from '//x144067:@srvlxp013.servers.getcom.de/customersdata2015', not responding"
We had no problems with Mavericks at all, we still have no problems with Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate, Windows 2008R2 (native or virtual) or Linux Mint 17/17.1 clients, neither with samba 3.x nor with our actual environment and different newer samba releases.
We believe that this is a big bug in Yosemite, but we cannot go back to Mavericks because of incompatible TimeCapsule backups. Our workarround at the moment is that we have installed Linux Mint on our MacBooks to get 80% of our daily jobs done, rest has to be done with Windows 7 installed over virtualbox @Linux.
We have no clue at the moment how to solve this problem, the samba logs do not give any hint. The access from other operating systems is perfect and very fast, but not with Yosemite. We checked different tips found in the internet but nothing helped.
Does anybody has another idea to get Yosemite working or should we keep Linux Mint until Apple will provide a CIFS/SMB patch and going on with our workaround solution, which is productive at the moment ??? Our staff is not amused and wants one solution and not this workaround with two operating system. We have to decide wether we wait until Apple will get this fixed or we have to switch to Microsoft Windows (which is a No Go for me, but I will not be asked...).
    Thanks in advance
    C.

    Hi William,
    thank you for your response.
As you can read in my post I talked about CIFS/SMB.
It makes no difference if we mount the share over CIFS or SMB.
Folders with lots of files will not be shown even if we use SMB3 or an older protocol.
As mentioned I believe this is a timeout problem.
Does anybody know how the CIFS/SMB timeout setting in Yosemite could be changed?
    Kind regards
    C.

  • Mountain Lion Server: Network users Home directory mount problems

I am having several problems with my server after a latest name change of the server via Server.app. (A first name change made problems, after that I have been trying to repair, changing the name a few times more. With latest name change, I also changed the server name itself from Foo to Bar while changing domain name from domain.com to bar.domain.com after which I repaired DNS so it covers the whole domain.com domain).
The users in the Network directory think their home directory is on afp://domain.com/Users, but the server is now called bar.domain.com. /Network/Servers/bar.domain.com does not exist on the server. Client machines (with mobile home directories) are now able to sync, because I added an A record for domain.com to DNS (not  nice, but does the job, or more specifically that job). Also on the clients, I can go to a SHARED folder in Finder with the name Bar and go to Users and see al the home directories there. But:
    bash-3.2# ls -l /Network/Servers/
    total 4
    dr-xr-xr-x  2 root  wheel  1 Apr 14 11:14 domain.com
    dr-xr-xr-x  2 root  wheel  1 Apr 14 11:14 foo.domain.com
    bash-3.2# ls -l /Network/Servers/*
    /Network/Servers/domain.com:
    total 2
    dr-xr-xr-x  2 root  wheel  1 Apr 14 11:14 Users
    /Network/Servers/foo.domain.com:
    total 2
    dr-xr-xr-x  2 root  wheel  1 Apr 14 11:14 Users
    bash-3.2# ls -l /Network/Servers/*/Users
    /Network/Servers/domain.com/Users:
    ls: Users: Input/output error
    /Network/Servers/foo.domain.com/Users:
    ls: Users: Input/output error
So, on the server looking for folder ~user does not work. It wants to  go to afp://domain.com/Users/user but that is unreachable.
Any tips on what I can do except do a clean rebuild of the server (again)?
(One of the obvious problems is that the Realm of OD is still called foo.domain.com, the origin of my problems has been that the first name change from foo.domain.com to domain.com (ill-advised, I know) failed — partly).
What I'd like to know is:
    - where is it determined which servers end up in /Network/Servers?

    Som additional info:
Other machines can mount afp://foo.domain.com/, afp://domain.com/ and afp://bar.domain.com/, but the server itself cannot mount them via Finder.

The system update to 10.4.3 is the only diference from when it worked, I wonder if that is the problem.

  • Power mac G5 dual, startup and fan problem

    Dear macpeople,
I have a Power mac G5 dual, 1.8 ghz, ramm 4.5GB. I guess from 2004. Only added more Ram three years ago. Never had any serious problem till a week ago. I have read a lot of similar questions and responses on my problem in this forum but till so far i have not been able to solve it.
Since a couple of weeks my mac sometimes did,nt recover from sleep. Starting up gave me some trouble because the fans were racing like **** and i had to restart several times to be able to boot normally. In the beginning just the upper fan next to de CD player ran fast and loud but now all of them get crazy at start up. Very rare times G5 is able to recover this (fans slowing down) and boot up, but this only in the safe mode.
    I have cleaned the mac
    i have resetted PRAM
i have used utility disk, all ok
i have unplugged for 40 min, reset in the machine, safe start up.
    Checked memory
The only way to boot is in the safe mode. The fans start blowing fast but after 4 min. they slow down then the blue screen appears and mac builds up normally. But when i leave it for more than 1 hour in the sleep mode it will not recover, although i hear the normal sound of awaking/ accelerating disc. The screen keeps black and after a few minutes fans start blowing at full speed. Pushing 4 sec. the on/off button pulls it off.
I hope that someone can help me to solve this problem (me not being a tecnician at all) or that someone can give me a kind of diagnostic so that i can check  the costs of profesional reparation. And start saving money for a new machine.
Any one any clue? Help would be very apreciated

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

  • Mounting problems after upgrade to iTunes 7.6.1

This house has two Mac laptops, both running the latest 10.4.11.
    1. After the install yesterday of iTunes 7.6.1 (9), the iBook would not mount applications downloaded as disk images. This I repaired by removing two 'now' unacceptable fonts in the System Collection. However, it now fails to verify most CDs it writes, which are Taiyo Yuden CD-R 52x. (An earlier sporatic problem, I believe Apple had attributed to its failure to stabilize the Firewire bus sufficiently before using it.)
    2. Yesterday I installed iTunes on a G4 PowerBook at the same time. Before the install it had never written a coaster, using Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden media. An hour before installing it, I had archived 1/3 of the drive to Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 16x discs (TYG03), which the drive can write to. (Caution: using these discs on some older drives will damage them!)
After the install of iTunes, file-system check, permission fix, reboot, the G4 will burn no DVD. It creates the disc image, then reads the first track of the disc and (before writing a thing),
DVDSpanner: Burn started, Sun Feb 24 22:37:09 2008
DVDSpanner: Burning to DVD-R media with DAO strategy in TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182M LA00 via FireWire.
DVDSpanner: Requested burn speed was 47x, actual burn speed is 18x.
DVDSpanner: Burn underrun protection is supported, and enabled.
DVDSpanner: Burn failed, Sun Feb 24 22:37:16 2008

DVDSpanner: Burn error: 0x80020022 The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.
Does anyone know what a CDB is?
I suspect iTunes the cause because of the fact that both computers failed only & just after iTunes was installed, iTunes writes to optical media, 10.4.9 damaged the LaCie driver, and problems 1 and 2 may both be classed as problems mounting devices.
    Any kludges or suggestions? Thanks!
    Bruce

No need to all respond at once, I've fixed the computer; though this doesn't solve the problem, if it existed; and now makes that moot.
All the various applications, but Toast apparently, use the same 'device driver' and consequent log file. LaCie's 'disc recording support' driver is now dated February 15, 2008 (on its website only). So, though it looks the same to me, I had an excuse to upgrade to the same one installed earlier. All works now.
This is a sad application of the professional's last maxim: 'When all seems lost, re-install.' So, I'm marking this solved, though this form of solution is the least desirable: it may be only temporary; and now one can't tell.
Thanks to all who thought about it.

  • Mounting problem with Solaris 10

    Hi everybody !
I am new in Solaris admin (come from HP !)
    here is my problem :
i have to create a FS (would be only data in it) that would be shared by 2 zones working on a fail-over principe.
So i create this FS directly under the global zone.
But i can't find in the Man pages the options of mount that tell the 2 zones to have their entries alternatively on this new FS
waiting for your advices, thanks in advance.
    Titine.

You don;t need to mount the FS by NFS unless your talking about zones on two different machines.
Two zones on the same machine can import the same filesystem with no problems.
But I'm unclear as to what your trying to achieve. Two zones on the same machines provides no real failover because if the machine goes down so do both zones.
Your best option is to have the FS on one machine and NFS export it to 2 other machines.
Theres no real advantage to using zones here of course. But you can if you prefer.
Of course the machine hosting the FS is still a single point of failure unless you use a SAN and HA-NFS.
