To shutdown: type "shut-down" and press Return

When I follow the instructions the PowerMac startup normal.
Please can you tell me what is going on and how i solve this problem.
Thank you very much for your time
Daans

Hi-
For whatever reason, the Mac is booting into Open Firmware. It most likely means that you need to reset your Mac's PRAM and Open Firmware.
Instead of typing mac-boot type reset-nvram and press Return.
Then type reset-all and press Return.
The reset-all command should restart your Mac. If so, you have reset the Open Firmware settings. The boot problem should then be resolved.

When I finished my work on the PowerMac G4/500, I logout and switch off the computer the according the manual. Then I turn off the 220 volts to the rest of the equipment with a single switch.
When I start working again I switch on the power, the computer turns itself on without me pressing the power on button.
Question: What is wrong with my PowerMac G4 ?
    Thanks for the assistance, Daans

    Hi Daans-
There is probably nothing wrong with your Mac. Check
    your System Preferences/Energy Saver/Options. Is
"Restart automatically after a power failure"
    checked?
Even if it isn't checked, the surge in power to the
switch could be enough to act as if the switch button
    was pushed.
Personally, I don't think that switching the power
strip "off" is such a good idea. One side effect, is
that you are causing the 3.6v battery to be used more
than it normally would. A discharged battery will
eventually cause problems, up to the computer not
starting. Many people leave their machines on 24/7.
Myself, I never power down (unless working inside the
computer) and only sleep the machine.
If your power supply company is flakey- frequent
power outages, surges, spikes, etc., you would do
well to put your system on a UPS, and leave the power
    connected to your computer.

  • Best OS 9 boot Powermac G4s. AGP vs. Quicksilver ?

Hi, i am reposting a follow-up question and hoping BDAqua might catch this and be able to reply
as you had responded to my post in the other discussion.
Sorry for separate thread but i have an opportunity to get a deal on a G4 Desktop and am
still  a little unclear on a couple of things
I'd mentioned that I want to take a noisy MDD G4 dual out of service from my recording studio
but need a replacement G4 that can natively boot OS 9.22.  I do have a spare AGP 400 mhz
i could upgrade for this, but i have someone locally who has a few of the slightly newer-vintage
    Quicksilver models in various configurations.
Checking out Low End Mac, i see some of these appear to offer faster processors than the Sawtooth
series.. for example there's one listed as a 1Gig.... and larger HD capacity...   as well as a reference to
    a dual-processor non-MDD model but i'm not sure that's OS 9 bootable.
I mainly wonder a couple of things.. Did these ones have any of the noisy fan issues that the MDD did...
and... might one of these be a better option for an OS 9-bootable machine than going the route of putting
$$ into modding my older AGP with an OWC or other 3rd party CPU processor upgrade?
Thanks for any other advice anyone might have.  Much appreciated!
    Mike

Hi Don, thanks for your reply and I share BDAqua's appreciation for your expertise and helpfulness...
As you point out, certain QS models can use only the model-specific OS installers...
That said, a  friend has an '02 QS (1G Dual) and the OS was wiped clean - with no installer disks
to be found...  so it 'comes to me' with no OS at all...  i hate to pass on the deal and am just trying
to figure out how i might be able to get OS 9 - or X - for it.
I wonder if you or anyone here might be able to point me in the direction of where i might be able to
buy disks - or access disk-images that could be burned to create the startup/installer disk set needed?
Thanks for any suggestions...I am thinking LowEndMac's a good place to start but if you or others
have other thoughts i'd appreciate suggestions.
    Thanks again!
    Mike

  • Powermac g4 500mhz agp "Is my motherboard Dead?"

My g4 was having a small problem everytime I started to use safari.,it would open then close..I could not get it to stay open..I would restart and then try again..same results..then after restarting second time the computer seems to be unable to complete the restart sequence..then all of a sudden DEAD..power seems ok,hardrive may have died, no big dead..tried different hd nothing...now I have no display, chime, and I am unable to use the dvd-rom to load os back on...I do have a Red Light by the memory slots...and if I connect the dvd-rom drive to the motherboard it does not respond, but as soon as I disconnect the drive it opens and closes..now I am talking about the ide cable that attaches to the motherboard...any idea what is going on..cause I am out of ideas,is the motherboard Dead?

    Hi-
    I would look for a minimum of a 867MHz Quicksilver or a 933 MHz Quicksilver 2002 model.
Both, besides being faster, have an L3 cache with the processor that the 733 machine doesn't.
This cache really helps with video/graphic/game performance.
The 2002 Quicksilvers (800, 933 and dual 1.0GHz) are more desirable than the first QS (733, 867, and dual 800) because they have native support for larger than 128GB hard drives.
The 800MHz QS 2002 doesn't have the L3 cache, just like the 733MHz processor.
Also, because the greater than 867MHz machines are able to run Leopard, they can use more modern software.
Other than that, and CPU, the machines are all identical.
As compared to the other machines that you have (G3 and G4) the 733 is a much better machine.
It could really use the L3 cache, though.
Only replacing the processor can provide that....
BTW, I have 3 933MHz QS 2002 machines, and find it to be a very capable machine.
My daughter uses one, and doesn't complain about online activities (video & games) like she did with a dual 500MHz Gigabit Ethernet.
Another one is used as a media server for our family entertainment center, and is also very capable with the tasks that it performs.

  • Harddisk doesn't mount.

My Macintosh G4 has a second harddisk(SCSI) build in. When I start the computer I hear this harddisk spinning up.Then MacOS 10.3.9 trying to mount the harddisk, but it doesn't shows on the desktop.
Is this harddisk dead or can it be saved ?

    Hi there,
have you tried opening Disk Utility to see if your drive can still be seen in the list on the left after you click the First Aid tab - if yes click the Repair Disk button & see if that helps. While you're there click Repair Permissions on your Startup HD, as it's always a good thing to do.
You could do the usual resets, PRAM & PMU etc, but they may not work.
Also try Disk Warrior or Techtool Pro 4 if Disk Utility cant help you.

  • Mac audio TOO LOUD after rebooting Mac

After rebooting a PowerMac G4/500 (AGP) with Mac OS X 10.4.6 sounds too loud (as if it was at top highest volume) when playing audio files, even though the audio setting (keyboard audio keys) is set to only one to three points. Just clicking such keyboard audio buttons (to lower or even increase it) fixes it and the audio returns to its correct volume. What is going on? This is driving me nuts!
    Thanks.

    Justin,
Thanks. I have done as indicated, shut down and booted, yet the issue persists. For instance, if I go to iTunes and play a song, it plays very loud, yet the audio is set at a single point. I can see it clicking the keyboard audio keys. As said, once I click any of such keys (increase or reduce volume any amount) the audio returns to its normal volume until the next time that I boot the Mac. This is a 100% consistent issue. Weird.

  • Working around a dead headphone/speaker connector

The headphone/speaker connector on our PowerMac G4-500 (AGP) seems to have worn out. There's no sound when I insert the plug to the speakers that we've always used, nor when I insert the plug to some headphones. But when there's no plug in the connector, sound comes from the built-in speaker.
The connector has had many insertions and withdrawals this year, while I futzed with a replacement video card that had intermittent problems.
I could pay a shop to replace the connector, but don't want the down-time involved.
Is there either an add-in PCI card, or a USB device, that can be used to replace the built-in headphone connector? A seamless solution would have a 3-contact Sony-type headphone connector.

Sorry, the mic and headphones plugs were swapped.

  • Can I remove the drive door on my new combo drive?

I bought a Lite-On dvd combo drive. The drive door (face place? Whatever it is called) is not flat like the dvd drive it replaced. Consequently, I can't get the drive door bezel back on my sawtooth. The drive works fine. It is strictly an aesthetic consideration.
I could pry at it until it snaps off, but before I take the cave man approach, I was wondering if a better way was known. Suggestions?

No, you can't. The only way to get a larger capacity would be to sell your iPhone and purchase a new one.

  • Printing labels with Apple Address Book

I like to print Avery labels ( J8160-J8151 ) from my Apple Address Book.
A single label works perfect but I like to print 65 of the same labels on one sheet. How can I do this ?
How can I tell Address Book the printing-position on a sheet of labels when the first five labels are used ?
Where can I find a manual of Address Book ?
Please I like to have some suggestions,
    Thanks, daans

    Daan,
There isn't a manaul for Address Book really, just the Help info.
You can't print a page of the same label. You also cannot choose the printing position. Apple has left it up to third party developers really to design products to take advantage of the Address Book database. The real power of Address Book lies in that it works seamlessly throughout the system and acts as a centralized contact database with which other software products can make use of the data.

Have you tried squirting some oil on the fan shaft?
I copied this info on fans from a post some time ago. Don't know if it applies to your fan (ventilator).
This one is for the Power Supply replacement:

  • Will my rage128 pro video card drive a 24" dell?

i am buying a dell ultrasharp 2405FP monitor. i am running 10.3.9 on a G4 with a Rage128 Pro video card. can i drive this monitor? and if not, what video card is currently available for my mac that will drive it?
    thank you.

The ATIRagePro128 (16MB VRAM) on the PowerMac G4 has both SVGA and digital (either DVI-D or ADC) ports, except the first G4 ("Yikes") model, with PCI graphics, which only has a SVGA port.
So yes, you can drive the Dell 24", since it has both SVGA & digital inputs, but only to a maximum resolution of 1600x1200. However, this would not be optimal, since the native resolution of the Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW 24" Widescreen LCD is 1920x1200--text may be blocky, for example.
I have a PowerMac G4/500 (AGP) and I replaced my ATI Rage 128 with an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro for Mac. Works perfectly with my Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW 20.1", has both DVI and ADC ports, drives up to two monitors at 1920x1200, 64MB DDR video RAM, Tiger-native driver for card. Have fun.

  • Powermac G4 AGP Airport card (b) not seeing network

I have a friend who has an older Powermac G4 (with AGP graphics card) that has an installed original Airport Card (b only). he would like to connect to his home network (other newer mac computers and HP printer) wirelessly using the Airport card. He is running Mac OS X 10.4.11 on this computer
because he needs access (only on this computer) to Mac OS Classic, and this version of the operating system is the last version to support
    Classic.
The troubleshooting I have done has only resulted in "your Airport card must be bad"
Hopefully, there are other options as well, but I have not yet found them. And, being that this computer is so old, it is also not a frequent or new/hot topic.
Any and all help would be most appreciated. My friend is very ill and trying to get this connection working for his wife before he dies, so time is of the essence.
Thanks in advance for the help,
    Marc

    Hello,
Is the Router they're trying to connect to maybe 802.11n only? Some have a setting to allow 802.11b/g or not.
Is the Router using WPA2? The 802.11b card can only do WEP or WPA, & the very 1st 802.11b card needed a firmware update to even do WPA.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining the Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

I need run & remove apps for startup my nokia 500.but i can't find any settings plzz help me......

    Hi trarumaya,
You cannot install fonts yourself, the only way to get additional languages on your phone is to visit your local Nokia Care Point and ask them to do it. Please note that they can usually install only local languages, so it's best to phone them or visit the shop for more information.
If you only want to browse websites, we would advise you to give Opera Mini a try as it is capable of displaying different language fonts.
    Hope this helps,

  • 10.4 install fails on stock PowerMac G4 450 Sawtooth running OS 9.2.2

I did my search before posting this question so helpful answers would be appreciated.
I aquired a PowerMac G4 450 AGP system which originally had OS 9.0.2, 20Gb HD, 256Mb ram, DVD-Rom and standard AGP video card. I have since pumped the ram up to 384 and upgraded the OS to 9.2.2. Also I have applied the latest firmware upgrade 4.2.8 to the system.
    System is running fine.
I purchased (from eBay) an OS x 10.4 PowerMac G4 DVD software install disk.
Disk is readable, because if I put it into the drive while 9.2.2 is running, I can access the contents of the disk and in fact if I attempt to launch the installer, I get a big dialog box with the X and telling me to restart to install.
Ok, so much for the background. Now the meat.
I start the install, everything seems fine.
I get the apple logo on the screen with the little spinning disk underneath.
The DVD drive light is on. This goes on for a short while and then my LCD display blanks and a box pops up saying "invalid video mode" and the screen then looks like it goes into a screen saver mode. There is no further DVD activity and nothing else happens. The System power light is still on, but pushing in the button does nothing.
I can reset the system and go thru the same process.
Also, I have tried using the "option key" power up as well as the "c" key option.
    Always the same results.
Does ANYONE have an answer to this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    Kerry

Ok. I have figured out the problem. After purchasing a second, FULL, OS X 10.4.3 disk to install... it failed in the same way as the G4 version.
It turns out, the it had something to do with OS X trying to set my monitor into a video mode that was not supported. The monitor I was trying to use was an Envision 19" widescreen (1440x900) LCD. When I hooked my G4 up to a smaller 17" LCD monitor, the installation when as it was supposed to. Interesting thing, after the install completed, and I re-hooked up the Envision... Same problem occured when I restarted my G4. OS X tried to put it into an invalid mode. I have an Acer 19" widescreen LCD and hooked this up to the G4 and it works fine. I believe that it has something to do with OS X wanting to use 75Hz instead of the normal 60/70Hz configurations.
Anyway, ALL should take note of this issue.
    Kerry
