Startup problems: I found in log 7 SMC kernel errors

Machine is intel iMac early2008 with the newest ver of Mavericks OSX.  I have 4GB RAM, newely installed additional 2GB of the 4GB. Prior to Mavericks upgrade it had Snow Leopard. Disk Utility shows only OSX to be Snow Leopard rather than Mavericks.  I had thought I may have installed 2 OSX of Mavericks when checking all files in sysem, but following several disk permissions verify and repair, several scans for duplicates, scans with iBoostup(since it was not much help I trashed it).  Disk Permissions scan found this:
Warning: SUID file “usr/libexec/security_authtrampoline” has been modified and will not be repaired. (I am Unable to find anything on this)
Warning: SUID file “usr/libexec/authopen” has been modified and will not be repaired. (I found that this is to be ignored
I have searched for suggestions and have not found exactly what I am dealing with so will appreciate any and all suggestions..
When rebooting from ShutDown I am getting , after long time of grey screen, a dark gray file with a ? mark in the center of it. Also for some time now I get a System Error message from my Avast each time following it's  scan.
When the ?file shows I have no chice but to unplug machine and after a while, usually overnight, plug it in and it boots just fine until the next reboot following shutdown.  Before the Apple shows up on the screen there are random black pixls and dots on the gray screen.  The pixls and dots began following the upgrade to Mavericks OS X then stoped for a while until 2 days ago.
I have reset the PRAM. I have done the following to reset the SCM several times and problems still persist with each Startup from the total Shutdown.
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
So inconvenient to do each time and very scarry for me. Please help and thank you so much.

Thanks Eric.  I did uninstall Avast and reinstalled it. I did more checking of everything I could do once again..  The flashing gray ?File was Meteorologist I think when I checked Startup items.  I had already checked iTunes as I do not have anything in it.  When hilighted the Meteorologist was told it was not recognized. After checking it to not load at startup.  I then worked on an item called Aviator with asociated dmg callet whitehat something or other. Tried earlier to remove it and could not. After running disk permissions the umteenth time I ws able to remove the Aviator dmg and the whitehat thingy.
I finally rebooted to Sfe Mode which was terrible. Everything was flashing all ove the place. I was able to check a few things as long as it did not require the use of internet. After all that I was ready to reboot again ans wala!!
On reboot there was no flashing ?file folder even though it did take a very long time for machine to load. I had to wait for everything to load when opening Safari and internet Website. I have spent from 10 AM to now working on this and I think it will be OK.  Although machine seems to be using an unusual amount of the extra GB of memory I added yesterday.  The APP and File Cache seems to be using much more memory that when I had only 3GB. This is very frusating for me. The only app I stil have that I added yesterday is the Apple easy duplicate finder.  I hate to remove it since I had to pay for it.
I don't know what Avast will find next time it runs a scan. I tried to do a full scan but after over an hour I stopped it. Will save that for tonight.
Oh, I also ran a Software Update, nothing there. Might there be any hidden software that needs updating? Perhaps Java. I forgot to do that.  BTW, the Avast! Uninstall link you posted did not work for me so I went directly to the site and hunted for uninstaller. Finally discovered that it is very easy, just open Avast Preference and click uninstall .BTW, the reset SMC, 15 sec was not long enough time for my machine, I pluggeg back in after 15 mins and still got the ? file of death so unplugged for 30 mins and finally it loaded for me.
Thank you for the reply and your interest.

  • Startup problems. Grey screen. Disk0s2 i/o error

    Hi everyone!
I have a Macbook Pro from late 2011. Some time ago I had some startup issues. The computer kept frozen in the gray screen. I tried starting in single user mode, and running fsck and it said disk0s2 i/o error. Even with the Disk utility in the recovery HD, couldn't solve the problem.
Then I changed the Hard drive. Now I had the new hard drive for less than 1 month, and I have exactlly the same problem!! Is it possible that my laptop is burning all the Hard drives I put in it?? Is very strange that two different hard drives, diferent brands, have exactlly the same fail. And one new hard drive with just one month use!
    Anyone can help me?

am i going to be able to get it back with an installation disk?
You won’t know unless you try. Booting up from the Installer DVD, launch Disk Utility, select your hard disk, and click Verify Disk.
If there are any errors, click Repair Disk. You may need to repeat it until Disk Utility reports there are no problems.
If, however, there are still problems with your disk, you may need something like DiskWarrior, which is a much more powerful tool.

    Hello
I have problem in saint "Temporary log /usr/sap/trans/tmp/SAPRITAC2D.BT7 not found". Is there any workaround? I would need to import this add-on up to the end (currently I am in

These kind of errors usually happen when the system is shutdown abnormally during a patch installation. You can try reset the transport buffer by doing the following:
    - SE37, using function module OCS_RESET_QUEUE, test/execute. Use the value 'SAINT' for IV_TOOL. Try executing first without specifying IV_FORCE value of X.
    - Remove all files in /usr/sap/trans/tmp or simply move them somewhere else if you're not sure. Make sure no tp processes are running.
    - Try import the package again.

  • Dual Monitor Startup Problem on MacPro - Solved

I have a model 53135LL/A = mid 2010 MacPro with 8 cores, DUAL monitor cards and monitors, 24GB memory, running Lion 10.7.3.  It is important to note that I am also using the Apple bluetooth Magic Mouse and the smaller, bluetooth keyboard (no numeric keypad).  This unit was supplied with Lion in December 2011 and has had a startup problem from the beginning as follows:
1 - when starting from a cold start the dual monitor positions are reversed from the correct position
2 - additionally the USB and firewire connected devices (e.g. Wacom tablet, 2 card readers) do not function properly.
The workaround for me has been to start the system, wait for the logon screen, then click restart. Upon restart everything comes up and functions correctly.
Specifics on my setup and starting problems:
1 - My main monitor (Monitor #2) is a large gamut monitor that is located to the right. This monitor is connected to card slot 1 as that is the faster card slot (pcx16). The second monitor (Monitor #1) is an ordinary unit and connected to card slot 2 (pcx4). The monitors are set up as an extended desktop.
    2. The Wacom tablet (Intuous 3 wide) is connected to USB port on rear of machine. CF card reader by Delkin is connected to Firewire on rear of machine, and an SD card reader is connected to USB on the rear of the machine.
    3. My dock is positioned on the left side of the left monitor. The menu bar is along the top of the left monitor, and all desktop icons are on the left monitor.  The right monitor has no items on it.
On a typical cold start, as mentioned above, the apple logo appears on the right and then the logon screen appears on the right.
If I proceed to logon at that point, all the desktop items move to the right monitor and the computer thinks the positions are reversed.  In other words, it behaves as though the right monitor (#2) is on the left of the desktop and left monitor (#1) is on the right.
Additionally, the Wacom tablet using either pen or mouse does not map over the full desktop range.  If I use either card reader and then eject the card, no further card insertions will be recognized.
To fix this, I simply restart the machine thru the apple menu and everything comes up correctly.
I had discovered, that instead of completing the logon on a bad cold start, I could simply restart from the logon screen and all would work correctly.
On occasion, the logon screen would come up on the left monitor (as it should do) and in that case, if I log on all works correctly.
I have worked with Apple support on the phone, clearing setup ram etc. Have had the unit in to Apple store for hardware check, all OK.  Next suggestion was reload OS and start over - no thanks.
SO - Here is the latest.
If I turn off my keyboard and mouse before starting the machine, then wait for the logon screen to appear - It starts correctly, with the logon screen on the left.  I can then turn on my keyboard and mouse and all works as it should.
Bottom line - there appears to be a startup issue with Bluetooth devices from a cold start.  Note that once the machine has been used for a bit, I can turn it off for short periods of time (e.g. 30 minutes) and it will start correctly even with the mouse and keyboard turned on.

That's how dwm behaves. I believe dwm's multihead support is rather lackluster out of the box. You might want to check out some of the patches they have, and ask around in the dwm hackers thread.
I currently have dwm simply draw status on all monitors, but I'm investigating separate status bars per monitor. We'll see where that takes me. Dwm is a tinker's WM!
i found the patch , thanks!

    Thanks & Regards

I have seen this problem also. To be clear, this occurs straight out of the box. In other words - launch eclipse, create a new workspace, create a new portal EAR project with the wizard, and then try to deploy it without touching anything. In fact, try changing the portal's facets to anything, plain EAR, 11g default, Portal EAR - it doesn't matter. It will not deploy. Either you get this error or you get deployment errors complaining about missing library references in the weblogic-application.xml. Then - you have to do surgery just to get an 'out of the box' portal to run. Very frustrating.

When I look up the version am running from Help about is shows 27.0.1.
I tried checking for updates again and got the message that firefox is up to date.
    How do I fix this?
I don't know where to get FF 27 download again.
Where do I get the download?
Do I need to uninstall and re-install or just reinstall over the existing copy.
(reminder I can't lose my bookmarks and don't know how to back them up)
I know little about Win8 so I dont know where things belong.
Please reply to [email address removed]. and let me know where to find my answer
    Thanks AlfLinus

That's the version you seem to be running, which is the latest. Although there doesn't seem to be a need for it, you can download the full 27.0.1 setup file, exit Firefox, then install on top of your current version.
    * http://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/
If you run into the same problem, then I suggest disabling your security software before running the setup file and re-enabling it afterwards.

I need to keep all bookmarks - I don't have a back up or how to make them.
Updating Firefox doesn't normally affect your bookmarks. To back them up, you can export them in HTML format as described below.

  • Startup problem with Lion OS 10.7.3

Just recently, I've been experiencing a startup problem with Lion. I don't usually have any issues running my Mac, so I'm at a loss why this is happening now.
I have an Intel Mac Pro running 10.7.3. I usually leaving my Mac running all the time and only restart when the need arises. In addition to being my main computer, this mac alsocontrols a MacMini that serves as a music server thru screen sharing.
This past weekend, I restarted my Mac and could not get past the grey screen. The mac chimes, the apple logo appears with the spinning gear, the blue screen briefly appears, but instead of progressing to the desktop it reverts to the grey screen with a repeating cycle of the spinning gear appearing (spins for a while, stops, disappears, reppears spinning, stops, disappears, over and over) - never progressing beyond that stage.
I decided to reinstall the system and things have been fine for the past few days. Today, restarting again resulting in the same problem.
I've tried several things without success. I disconnected all peripherals, reset the PRAM/SMC, ran Disk Utility from a install volume and ran repair and permissions (no problems reported). Tried safe mode startup - a progress bar appeared but never fully progressed and could not get to the desktop.
Recent changes included updating the OS to 10.7.3 and Adobe Photoshop CS5.5 - no recent hardware changes. No bluetooth devices connected.
    Any thoughts? Thanks -

    Thanks -
I've reinstalled the OS today and am back up and running.
But, since this is twice this has happened within the past week, I'm worried about might be causing this issue - besides bad luck. My Mac is usually rock solid - can't remember the last time I've had to reinstall the OS in the past few generations of OS X.

  • SQL Data Modeler - Startup Problem

    Hi
I've created a Relational Model with Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler, with a few tables, and everything was working ok.
Yesterday I made some changes to the model, added columns and another table, saved the model and closed the Data Modeler.
Today - when I tried to open the Model, I only get an error "Some objects are not loaded correctly. See the log file for details"
The log at the bottom of the Data Modeler only shows: "Open Design: "nameof model"" and no details of what went wrong. No other details is provided, and as far as i can see - and now I can't view the model at all.
Any ideas how to find the problem/ fix it in order to get the created Model back?
    Thanks
    Coenraad

    Hi Philip
Thanks, I found the log file there. I have cleared the log file, and when I tried to open the model again, it created the below information, any ideas what could be wrong?

  • Startup problems w/ Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002) M8667LL (dual 1 GHz)?

    Startup problems w/ Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002) M8667LL (dual 1 GHz)
Starts up with bong and then a long wait then screen comes on with old time smiley Mac and spinning beach ball then another long wait and then OS X loading bar and then a panic screen. Subsequent start, bong, and then hard drive spins for 6 or 7 minutes, then hard drive stops and then nothing. Could this be symptomatic of a hard drive failure?
    Thanks very much.

I am pleased to report that I think the problem has been solved. Apparently the strange behavior can be attributed to overheating. After some on line research and the help of people on this list I opened the case and found that the logic board fan was clogged full of lint and dust. After cleaning it I discovered that the fan is inoperable. The computer is now operating with the case open and a small electric fan directed at the logic board heat sink. The computer has been operating flawlessly now for several hours. Will have to replace the bad cooling fan and clean the computer regularly. Thanks so much to all of the people who have responded to my request for help. Would like to mention that a firm with a canine connection charged me over a hundred dollars to report that their diagnosis is a faulty logic board.
    Thank you.

It generally helps to include a little more in a question besides just the stack trace. Was it clear to you that this is reporting a problem with your "application.xml" file? The contents of this file would be very useful information.
The error message is saying that it expected to find a "module" element, and it didn't find it. Seeing as this is the principal element that is found in this file, I'm guessing you have almost nothing in this file.
You can see the schema for this file at [http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee/application_5.xsd] (this is for JEE 5. I'm not sure whether the WebLogic version you're using (you've given no indication what version you're using) supports JEE 4 or JEE 5).

  • Nokia 5610 XpressMusic Startup Problem..

Hi, I have Nokia 5610 XM startup problem with memory card.. (I tried with 3 different micro SD card also)
I made video of problem.. video found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqUaI3S3v5s&feature=channel_page
If I remove the memory card, then it starts succefully.. And if I plug in back memory card, then phone restarts in 2hours or in calling time... sorry about my English..
    Greetings,

it sounds like it could be the memory card connectors or something like that if you say that it works fine without the card in, you might want to take it to nokia care point for them to have a look at this issue.
You know what I love about you the most, the fact that you are not me ! In love with technology and all that it can offer. Join me in discovery....

  • P4N Diamond startup problems

I've had problems with my P4N Diamond-based PC since I built it a couple of months ago.  Through excellent help from this forum I eventually resolved the main problem - I was using Maxtor 300GB drives which (due to their staggered spin-up) were incompatible with the Nvidia drive controller.
    OUTSTANDING PROBLEMS:
    1) Since before then though most boot-ups were taking longer than they should and I traced the problem via the event viewer, which reports disk errors and suggests replacing the drive.  I have tested 5 drives in total (3 different models) and I always get the same error.  I am 99% confident that the reported disk errors are actually motherboard related and I am suspecting that I either need to change the BIOS or the mobo.
But, changing the mobo is my very last resort and I can't see that changing the BIOS from 1.30 to 1.40 will improve anything (and may introduce new issues?) as there appear to only be updates to the Silicon disk controller.
    2) Am getting 4 beeps (in total) on startup - (1-2-1) beeps once, pauses, then beeps twice, pauses, then 1 low tone beep.  I have checked the BIOS beep codes page, but am confused about what my beeps mean?
    3) PC wouldn't shut down last night, so I had to do hard shut-down.  This morning it took 20 minutes to start up!  This problem appears to be linked to problem 1.
    4) My PSU blew (a couple of weeks ago) and I recently got a replacement.  Enermax assured me that it wouldn't have harmed the other PC components.  The problems above were occuring before the old PSU died, but I am unsure whether this could be linked to any of the above issues.
All previous burn-in tests, memtests and hard disk checks have all come back clear.  I think that the starting point is for me to understand what the beeps mean and to see if resolving the beep problems stops the other issues.

     nwheeler,
Well i spent 2 and half hours stright looking for BIOS beep codes for our motherbaord. But the only thing that i found was the same information that is on here. The P4N has different toned beeps, i know that my hearing is not messsed up. I think that i made a pretty exsustive search for it so im still stumped. I even tried the Diamond Forums (there are not that many posts there). You can check that out here: http://diamondclub.msi.com.tw/eng/
There is one silver lining though. I came across a post on another forum board saying that you might get one beep for every USB device you have pluged into your machine. So do a count and see if that has something to do with your mixed code.
In my case i hear the one beep before the BIOS flash screen, from my search that first beep says that everything is fine. But after that i get a high beep followed up a few seconds later by a lower toned beep. As for USB devices i have 2 pluged into my machine...the first being a USB mouse, and the second being a Joystic. Later when i get home today im going to try unpluging them to see if i get a different beep process. Ill let you know what i find out.

  • Startup problem on my G4

    hi to all!
Something that happened a couple of times (so far) with my Gigabit Ethernet: I switch the Power Mac on, then when I come back a few minutes later the monitor is on (well, it’s always on...), but the led is on orange, as when the Mac is off, and the Pro Mouse (attached to the keyboard) seems dead, as there’s no red light coming from it... however the Mac is indeed on, same noise (fan) as usual, and if I open the case everything seems ok and the internal red led is on. Then, both times, by pushing the restart button the G4 quickly loaded Tiger. First time everything seemed all right, but today the monitor changed its brightness all by itself a few times... and I’ve realized I had this sort of problem in the previous days too, but much less often and I hadn’t paid much attention to it.
I’ve guessed all these could have been caused by faulty Ram modules, something I already experienced last September, and solved thanks to this forum (even if last time the problems were of a different kind), or there are other possible causes?!?
Anyway, then I’ve run Rember, and the first time it was soon stuck while running Linear PRN, then I run it another time and... Rember went through all tests with no errors! Then one more test and again there was an error at the Linear PRN stage.
When I got the error free test I had told Rember to close also the Finder, while during the other 2 tests the Finder was on... and I wonder if this matter or not.
I guess all this confirm it’s a Ram problem, and tomorrow I’ll start checking what happens removing (or leaving) one module at a time... but I’m perplexed by the mixed results Rember gave me today: should I check every combination I’ll try more than once to be sure Rember results are ok or not?
    Thanks
    Stefano

ok, last Saturday I first run a few more times Rember, and got mixed results, but at least on half there was an error at the Linear PRN stage (and contrary to the first 3 tests, there was no patter in running the test with or without the Finder on), then I uninstalled one of my two 512 MB modules, the one I got new and installed last year btw, and after this on Sunday and today I've run Rember several times with always error free tests... I guess I've already found the faulty module, and the startup problem should be solved (as it occured only twice before, and a couple of weeks apart, I can't be 100% sure)... the drawback is that I'm back to 896 MB Ram, but I should get a new (and hopefully working) 512 MB module in a few days.
However, yesterday morning, soon after the startup of the Power Mac I noticed a few changes of brigthness of the screen... but I guess it should be a problem of the monitor, as in the last couple of days I also run several times CPUTest and always without any error in the tests

  • Intel SSD 530 startup problems on ThinkPad W520 - Bug in SSD or lack of BIOS support?

The are problems with Intel SSD 530 and ThinkPad W520. Many people, including me, are complaining about startup problems ... see this thread also: https://communities.intel.com/thread/44258
One month ago I bought an Intel SSD 530 240GB to replace the stock HDD of my ThinkPad W520 (4270CTO). When I cold-start the laptop everything is fine, but when I restart it from Windows 7 or even CTRL-ALT-DEL, the drive is not found. Both SSD and W520 has the latest firmware/BIOS.
I had no problems with Intel SSD 335 240GB; Windows starts and restart without problem, but with the Intel 530 it fails when I do restart, the BIOS does not find it after a normal reset. I think BIOS implementation for W520 does not support the newer ATA feature called "Device Initiated Power Management (DIPM) for Software Setting Preservation (SSP)". There is a BIOS update for W530 but not for W520.
Should I assume Intel SSD 530 is and will remain incompatible with ThinkPad W520 or wait for a BIOS update?
    W520 | i7-2720QM | NV Quadro 2000M

I am also seeing the exact same issue. I have a ThinkPad W520 and a Corsair Force GS using a Sandforce 2200 series controller. According to the Intel SSD thread, there is some incompatibility between that controller and Intel QM77-chips which is causing the issue.
The symptoms for my laptop are the same. SSD is always recognized on cold boot, but effectively never on warm boot / restart. Will we get a BIOS update that fixes this?
I have dual boot configuration with both windows 8 and windows 7. The issue is happening regardless of what OS I issue the restart from.
