Startup screen freezes for 5 minutes

Hello,
I've got a problem. My startup screen locks for about 5 minutes every time I restart or turn on the MacPro. Mouse pointer is fixed at the upper left corner of the screen and I can't enter the password. The HD working. Then mouse unlocks and I can enter.
It started a couple of weeks ago.
What to try? I've repaired the previlages, checked HD, no any startup programs... OS 10.8.3
Thanks in advance,
Serge

The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • IPhone 5s screen freezes for minutes at a time after iOS 8.0.2 install

My previously perfect iphone 5s has just been updated to iOS 8.0.2 and now for minutes at a time  the touch screen doesn't work. The buttons do, but not the screen. It then comes back to life for a minute or two before it stops working again. Anything I can do? Thanx

    Hey there Shortos,
It sounds like your phone touchscreen is not consistently working for you after updating to iOS 8. I can see how that would be pretty frustrating. It sounds to me like this could be a software issue or an issue with the screen itself. I would start with the troubleshooting in the following article to help troubleshoot the screen itself:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Troubleshooting touchscreen response
    Restart your device
Hold the On/Off button until "slide to power off" appears. Slide to power off your device. When it is off, press the On/Off button to turn it back on.
If you can't restart your device, reset it by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for a least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Clean the screen with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth.
Avoid using the device while wearing gloves, with wet hands, or immediately after applying hand lotion.
If you have a protective case, or if you are using a plastic sheet or film on the display, try removing them and testing the device without it.
If that does not resolve the issue, I would next quit all the running apps on the device:
iOS: Force an app to close
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Firefox can't open normally without going through the "this is embarrassing" routine; nor does it close down properly; it also sticks frequently, i.e. screen freezes for a minute or more; should I uninstall and re-install to try and debug?

Firefox can't open normally without going through the "this is embarrassing" routine; nor does it close down properly; I get the "end program" message and have to say "end now"it also sticks frequently, i.e. screen freezes for a minute or more; should I uninstall and re-install to try and debug?
    - I've used Firefox exclusively for around 2 years.
    - My outlook express has no problems
    - other programs seem unaffected; it seems peculiar to Firefox.
    - my main use is surfing the net, primarily entering competitions on line via specialist competition sites.
    - every day at some stage(s) I have to switch computer off as Firefox has got very slow/sticky/freezes.
I'm not techy by any means, but I can only thing of un- and re-installing to hopefully start with a clean slate.

Sounds like something is keeping Firefox from closing properly. See this: <br />

  • When I go to a website, it half-way downloads and then the screen freezes for 10-20 seconds while ads appear; this never happened till recently.

Until recently, I loved Firefox. Lately, when I go to any website and try to download a page, the screen freezes for between 10-20 seconds while ads load. Why the screen freezes is both frustrating and annoying. I have the latest version, nothing on my computer is different, and as I said, it didn't used to do this. Any ideas what's going on?

  • Has anyone had problems with the screen freezing for hours?

Yesterday my phone kept freezing when I went to unlock it, after 5 minutes or so it would then go to the code unlocking screen but last night my screen frooze for 12 hours until it finally ran out of battery and shut down.  When the screen freezes there is no way to force a shut down...can anyone help?

If the screen freezes, reset the phone - press both the home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo appears (~10 seconds).  If freezing recurs frequently, restore the phone.  See Appendix B of the User Guide:

  • Beach ball on startup, screen freezes, hangs

I have been experiencing problems with my iMac, and they have escalated to the point that I can no longer startup my computer without getting the spinning "beach ball" which just hangs there, making the computer unusable.
Prior to this, I would occasionally experience slowness, screen freezes when the mouse moves (see screen shot), and crashes, but other times it worked perfectly.
I'd appreciate any help or advice.

Thanks for the information, I tried both of the solutions you offered.
I was able to repair the hard drive and permissions without any errors.
In safe start mode makes my computer behave properly -- no issues at all and the speed is great.  I checked the Login items and turned all off.  (Nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary -- iTunes helper, iOmega HD, and a fan speed control item*)
When I restart after being in safe mode, the startup screen is white for a while, then goes to this new screen which I haven't seen before (greenish yellow w/ pixelated blocks across the bottom. (see screen) and hangs there.  (No login screen.)
    * This iMac is the one that has a problem overheating.  The fan controller isn't a new addition.

  • New version of firefox keeps freezing for minutes at a time every time I open it and my computer is new and IE works fine but hate IE

I have never had this problem before and it is happening on multiple computers. Firefox freezes for several minutes then unfreezes and works fine for awhile, then freezes again. Happening on two computers but not on other two only since 3.6 update. Please, help, as my brand new computer is doing this. It is not my ISP and does not happen on IE. Thanks!

  • ITunes freezes for minutes at a time with iPad

This is making me crazy! I sync my iPhone('s) and iPods with this computer, and while iTunes may slow down for a few seconds while the iPhone or iPod mounts, it is responsive almost immediately. Update! Now my iPhone freezes iTunes too... this blows!
With the iPad however, iTunes freezes for up to 2 minute with the spinning beach ball and shows up as unresponsive (duh!) in activity monitor. It finally starts synching and while doing so occasionally becomes unresponsive, but the synching finally finishes succesfully... eventually. I have removed and reinstalled iTunes 9.1 according to apple support protocols, but no real change. I have bit rate convert enabled, but it happens regardless of whether or not music is being added or changed. Have repaired permissions, disconnected various other USB devices, but no help so far... Anybody?

Your MyWebSearch plug-in is the cause of many problems. Google for information and advice on how to get rid of it.
If that doesn't help, you should work your way through this(Safe Mode,Problematic extensions etc ) -
    https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting%20extensions%20and%20themes
Make sure your plug-ins such as Flash are up-to-date -

  • Mismatch of JDK and JRE versions cause screen freeze for applications ?

    Hi,
My Java swing application is built on jdk1.3.1_17 in server. It was working fine without any issue when I use Java webstart 1.0.1 to download the client part of the application and JRE 1.3.1_10 to run the application from my local desktop.
For better performance, I upgraded my local desktop to 1.4.2_07 version of JRE and same version of java Web start 2 months before. From that day, I am facing a "Screen freeze" issue in my application. It means, while working on the application, the application screen goes blank or White screen. This issue may come while doing any activity all of a sudden , there is no pattern found.
Is there any reason like incompatibility of lower JDK version and higher JRE/JWS versions could have caused this issue ? Any Idea plz
    Thanks in advance
    David

I'm using a 15" Macbook Pro with Retina Display. The applications I have are Indesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Over a period of time, using these programs will make the screen turn blank. Sometimes, the screen turns a solid color and it just happens to be what ever color I've been using with the Color picker tool.
I don't know for sure what it could be. I tried checking Disk Utility (one problem was solve, but blank screen wasn't fixed).
I have to force reboot only to be faced with another blank screen. I either keep trying or keep cmd+opt+p+r until the screen boots back to normal. (This is probably due to the programs not shutting down properly when the laptop blank screens)

  • Ipod screen freezes for 30 seconds but continues to play music

I mostly use my ipod while I run.  This means that concurrently I have music playing and the stopwatch feature working.  They both work well together, but at least 2-3 times during a run, my screen will freeze if I attempt to skip a song or record a completed lap for the stopwatch.
When the screen freezes thanks to my pressing either the left/right or center buttons, the music continues to play but it takes approximately 30-45 seconds for the ipod to respond to what I did.  Fortunately, the stopwatch doesn't stop counting the seconds, so I don't lose the time I am tracking.  It's really frustrating to not be able to change a song when I want or record a lap.
I have restarted the ipod a few times but have never completely restored it.
Has anyone had this problem and can offer a solution?  I get so frustrated by this during my runs!
    Thank you.

  • I am having problems with the screen freezing for a short time ( a few seconds), what is the problem?

I can be working on any website, game, e-mail, and the screen will freeze for just a few seconds and then it will be ok again.
I don't know what has happened. Could it be my computer, mouse, or ME?

First try the standard troubleshooting steps of quitting the Camera app as described below then resetting your iPad.
Go to the Home screen and double click the Home button. That will reveal the row of recently used apps at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold on the app in question until it wiggles and displays a minus sign. Tap the minus sign to actually quit the app. Then tap anywhere on the screen above that bottom row to return the screen to normal.
Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • My computer seems to be running very slow.  It will screen freeze for a few minutes at a time.  Any help or suggestions??!!

Also a screen keeps appearing asking me to enter my keychain password. But I am unsure what this is.!?

That certainly looks like a low memory issue, 2 GB ram is barely enough to run Mac OS X versions from Lion through Yosemite.  The high number of Page Outs and killed processes show very high memory pressure.
Try adding memory, but be sure it is high quality, Mac certified memory such as that from OWC, http://www.macsales.com or Crucial, http://www.crucial.com

  • Startup screen freezes with vertical lines and a restart message

So this problem just started a couple of days ago it seems to be getting worse. Occasionally it will start-up but not often and at the moment it won't, I just keep getting this screen on start-up: http://www.flickr.com/photos/42697060@N04/3933706005/ and http://www.flickr.com/photos/42697060@N04/3934486754/
Not sure if this is the same problem people are having with the video card or not. Thanks for the help!

I'm getting the same look, with all kinds of squares and lines on screen, although mine starts while the computer is running with color reversals and lines on the working space. Then I get a freeze and have to do a hard re-start with the power button, and finally, what you're seeing. I did notice that when I unplugged the power adaptor, the problem has gone away, at least for the past 30 minutes or so.
I originally thought it was overheating, since if I shut it down and left it, it would re-start normally after 15 minutes, but crash again in 10 minutes of running. Then I came here, and read about the video card. That could be, but why only when plugged into the power adaptor? The power adaptor has been acting up lately, in that the light is sometimes off, sometimes amber when screen shows 100%, like that.
I'll plug back and in and see what happens, and put it here. 4:53 PM Saturday.
I'll keep fooling around with it, and report back here. I'll also make an appointment for next week with the nearest Apple store - 1.5 hour drive. Grrrr. I'm home with the flu this weekend. I'm tempted to go now and shake everyone's hand.

  • Startup screen freeze

I was installing an app on my 1st Gen Touch and it froze, so I did a force quit (Home button + on/off button on top). Now, when I turn it back on, it freezes at the silver apple. I tried to do a recovery mode by holding down the Home button when I start it up, but I've held it down for over a minute and no recovery message. Also it won't show up in iTunes when I go to hook it up.
    Help, please.
    Thanks.
