Startup stall's when MyBook External Drive is Connected

I've had the MyBook external hard drive (500GB; 800 Firewire; Mac Formatted) for about 6 months now. Within the last two weeks, whenever the drive is connected to my MBP it causes start up to stall; the start up just hangs at the gray screen.
I removed all the data from the drive and formatted it thinking that maybe the drive got corrupted, but even with a fresh drive it still happens. If I start up the MBP without the drive connected it starts up beautifully.
Anyone dealing with this same problem or have any thoughts on the matter?
Thanks in advance.

Mine needed a firmware update... was previously having the same problems.

  • Bridge CS5 is extremely slow when my external drive is connected

I have two drives that are connected pretty much 24/7: A 640GB Firewire drive, and a 320GB USB2 drive that's dedicated to Time Machine. When they're connected, Bridge is impossibly slow. And I mean that. Thumbnails don't generate, I can't "Open in Camera Raw" (it just "stops responding") and it's a mess. If I eject the two drives, restart Bridge, it works like I expect it should.
What's happening, here? Anyone able to reproduce this? Using OSX Lion on a MacBook Pro.

Bridge is a very processor intensive program.  Sounds like you are running out of processing power.
Try starting Bridge with just one of the drives.  Then do that with the other drive.  See if Bridge works OK with each one seperately.  Just a processes of elimination to figure out what is going on.

  • FCP 10.1 - External Drives stopped connecting

After a couple of days of using FCP 10.1 - suddenly when an external drive is connected - FCP doesn't recognize it.
The OS registers the drive, so clicking on the "projects and events" folder on the external drive is the only way which projects show up in the FCP GUI.  Why?
    How do I fix this?
    Thanks!
    Rob

The drives do not appear in FCP 10.1 interface. You open library either by double-clicking them or use the Open Library.

no, if iTunes can't find its drive/folder, it defaults to creating one within your Home directory's Music folder.

  • When I backed up files on my external drive, I inadvertently dragged my itunes library there. Now I can only play songs on my laptop when my external drive is plugged in. How do I get the library back to my computer

When I was backing up files from my computer to my external drive, I inadvertently dragged my itunes library to the external drive. Now I can only play my library when my external drive is plugged into my computer. How do I get the library location changed back to my computer?

Your drive was used with a PC and formatted NTFS which is proprietary Microsoft format.
You need to install a third party program that will read the NTFS format.
There is various software from PARAGON, Tuxera and NTFS-3G
When you get the data off and have verified it to be good, reformat the drive either HFS+ for Mac use only, or for Mac and PC use then MSDOS (FAT32) for under 4GB files (best) or exFAT (for larger than 4GB files) is proprietary and Microsoft is appling for a patent, which would likely mean OS X won't be allowed to read it anymore without a licensing fee and you'l have to pay another third party software company to read the format, just like NTFS is.
The less you have to rely upon third party sources to read your drives the better, this way if you have a issue and need to read the drive on another machine you don't need the software, and a internet connection and a credit card and...and...and...

  • How to move Startup Disk clone from one external drive to another?

I thought this would be a question easily answered on the WWW and easily found via search engines, but so far no luck, hence this question.
Prior to upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion I followed some very good instructions from Tom Nelson on ask.com (http://macs.about.com/od/backupsarchives/ss/diskbackup.htm) related to using Disk Utility to clone my internal Macintosh HD drive to an external hard drive, making it a bootable drive.  I cloned to a very nice LaCie external FW drive that had far more room than that needed for the clone.  This drive booted just fine as a startup disk, so mission accomplished:   I have now a bootable clone of my Lion system prior to upgrading to Mountain Lion.
The upgrade to Mountain Lion went well, and now, before I put any additional apps or much additional data on the original internal  Macintosh HD drive, I want to use Disk Utility again to clone the drive so I'll have a snapshot of the system right after the upgrade to Mountain Lion.
    Questions:
Is there any way to use the same LaCie drive that now holds the Lion startup disk clone to hold the yet-to-be-done Mountain Lion startup disk clone?
If not, how can I move the Lion startup disk clone from the oversized LaCie external drive to a drive more the size of the Lion clone (approx 140G)?   The LaCie drive is far too roomy and nice to have sitting gathering dust for only 140G to be used in an emergency restore.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

    Good info Csound1, and thanks.
So my final question (I think):  How does one move/copy a startup disk clone from one external drive to another, and still have it bootable on the new external drive?   I'm still considering freeing this LaCie drive up for more dynamic storage and getting another drive for the bootable startup disk clones IF I can move this Lion startup disk clone to a new external drive.
I guess the summary question is:   how does one clone a startup disk clone?  As I think about this, and recall the Disk Utility screens, couldn't I simply select the Lion clone on the LaCie FW external drive and do the same operation I did with the original internal Lion drive?  Basically the same steps as before but this time the source is the LaCie FW external and the destination is a new external drive?
Thanks again; wonderful forum here with very smart people.

  • Apple TV  sync problems when using external drive in iTunes

I have my iTunes library on an external drive in order to save HD space. Unfortunately the external driver some times get disconnected and I need to mount it again.
Since iTunes can not find the songs when the drive get disconnected, all songs are marked with an exclamation mark . So far no problem as the song will play immediatelly when i click on it.
The problem is now with the Apple TV. It seems that as soon as a song get an exclamation mark it get removed (!!!) from the Apple TV playlists. I would expect that the song is still available in Apple TV although in iTunes is marked with an exclamation mark, as this is only a temporary non availability.
The consequence is that one song in Apple TV may or may not be available for playing in dependency of the availability of the original song and its external drive in iTunes.
may be "its a feature", but a very annoying one..
    Alex

I believe you created this problem at the very beginning by not letting iTune to manage your iTune folder. When this occurs iTune can only play songs when your external HD is connected.
You mentioned you want to save HD space. The better solution will be to put the most played songs in your HD and let iTune manage the folder and backup all the other songs to your external HD. Best way to find out is to check out the most played from your list and backup the least played to your external HD. Better yet, backup all songs.

Is it possible to have Time Machine backUp computer HD AND external HD connected to Airport Extreme.
    Sorry, but no.
Time Machine will backup your Mac, but not the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme.
Time Machine will back up a hard drive only if it is attached directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire.

  • My retina macbook is slow to startup when my external drive is attached

Ive had my macbook retina for a couple of days now and generally the boot time is amazingly fast. But it seems that now Ive connected my usb devices to it (including my external drive) there is a long pause on the white screen at the beginning of startup .  If I unplug everything it goes back to being really fast again!
    is this normal?
    thanks for any help!
    Nick

No problem. Do you have a particular reason to shut down your system though? If you use it on a daily basis then I'd suggest just putting it to sleep rather than a full shutdown.
This doesn't harm your machine. Only shut it down when there's a real extended period of no use. In sleep mode you can benefit from the Power Nap feature of your retina as well:

  • Vista hangs after upgrade to 1.1 when attaching external drive

I am running Vista Home Premium and upgraded today to LR 1.1. When I plugged in my external USB-drive (where the photos and catalog reside) the whole Vista system got stuck. Power button + reboot. Several times with different external USB drives. Then I noticed the small icon (Adobe Photo downloader) in the system tray and after I removed that from the startup with MSCONFIG I was able to use the external drives.
My system is a Dell Inspiron 9400 with 2GB RAM.
Has anybody else experienced the same problem? Any idea why that happens?

After Upgrading to 1.21 (NSS6000), Backup Exec 12.5 produced another error when trying to bring up a Backup-To-Disk-Folder: "Unable to create new backup folder. Access denied".
The same procedure on another Server with BackupExec 2010 works!
After futher investigation the following solution for Backup Exec 12.5 was successfull (found on techrepublic)
...solution was to remove the remote PC from the Domain and Add it again.
IE. Change to workgroup from System Properties. Apply, reboot. Repeat process to add to the domain again...

  • Time Machine Stops when using External Drive

I recently purchased Seagate GoFlex Desk 3TB external drive. It is connected in USB port for MacPro.  Unfortunately, Time Machine starts backup, but it is discontinued after several minutes with message "cannot create backup folder." The backup seems to stall before it gives message, since the file count on the backup seems to stop.  Any suggestions as to why this external drive will not work with Time Machine? Any suggestions on how to resolve the problem?

The external Seagate GoFlex Desk 2.0/3.0 usb drive starts and runs the backup for awhile, and then after 40-50 gb of backup quits, and I get a message that backup failed.  When I restart the Time Machine backup, the prior backup seems to be on the disk, but it will only run for a period of twenty minutes or so, and then it will stop the backup.  I thought that there might be a problem with the 2.0 usb capacity as too slow, but I haven't seen anything to indicate that the speed would be the problem. I also have seen that the GoFlex Desk drive has a problem with Lion OS, but the Seagate site seems to say it is compatible.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

  • Partitioning options for the WD MyBook external drive

I purchased the WD MyBook Essential 2TB external drive. I would like to use it for TimeMachine backups, as well as my Windows machine. I think I will need to partition it for Mac and Windows machines. What option should I use in the Disk Utility partition options (there are 4 options). The first option is for Intel based Mac. The last option simply says "DOS". The Disk Utility seems to want to use the same option for both partitions. Is there a way to partition with two different options?

When you partition with DU the two partitions will be the same format, but after they have been created you can return to the partitions and reformat each individual partition differently. So I would set the partitions up as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then later connect to the partition that you wish to use with your Windows machine and reformat that partition with a Windows utility in the best format for the version of Windows you prefer.

  • MBP startup errors and wont read external drives

Hi All-  Major frusturation, and I'll jump right into it:  When I startup my computer I get the followig two errors:
“/Library/StartupItems/Qmaster” has not been started because it does not have the proper security settings.
“/Library/StartupItems/NortonAutoProtect” has not been started because it does not have the proper security settings.  Strange becuase I have NEVER installed any Norton productis on my computer, I once had clamxAV and got rid of it, and now have Sophos.  I can click ok to get rid of these windows and computer runs decent from there.
But the real problem has been this:
I've been getting the grey screen with the circle and diganol line through it, I'd restart, safe boot, restart, then repair permissions.  This would solve my startup problems, but then afer a couple of hours, programs wouldn't open from the dock, so I'd restart, get the gray screen with the circle....etc.  This morning I did a disk check and repair with my snow leapord install disk.
So far so good, until I plugged in my external drive (via Firewire), a LaCie, it shows up in finder, however when I click this, I get the error message:  The folder “LaCie Disk” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.     I've done a repair disk, but don't have the option to repair disk permissions.       Additionaly, when i plug in my other Western Digital (Time Machine) external, again, it shows up in finder but when i click on the drive, I get the error:  The folder “BACKUP DRIVE” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.
I'm freaking out, since I have tons of work files on my LaCie.
Thanks in advance for all help.     MacBook Pro , 10.6.7, 2.16Ghz, 2 GB 667, about 4-5 years old.

I’m getting to the bottom of the barrel.
    Two last stabs:

    Try again.
Creaye a new user in Accounts Pref Pane.
    Enable root user.
Login to that user and give it a try.
    Hope this works!!!

  • Issue with "Find" in Bridge when searching external drive.

When using "Find" in Bridge (version 2.1.1.9) in CS3 to search for files on an external hard drive I must either check "Include Non-Indexed Files" or go to the external drive and build the cache for the folders I want to search. Otherwise the files will not be found.
Having to build the cache in the external drive or use non-indexed search slows down the search process. Is there a way around this. Bridge preferences are set to "Automatically Export Caches to Folders". I use SyncBack for back up to the external drive.

Thank you for the reply. I thought that once the cache is built and exported to a folder, that folder would be indexed and ready for a search by Find. And when copying that folder to another drive the files would remain indexed and available to a search by Find on that drive.
I have not copied the central cache to the external drive. So I assume that when using Find to search the external drive it is looking at the caches in each folder on that drive.
