Startup then restart message

Anyone got any ideas.
Dual G5 OSX10.3.9 Unit has been powered down for five days and unplugged during move (wondering if internal battery could be fault, not changed yet but only 16 months old)
Each time I start up, all looks good then 10-20 seconds later black box in middle of screen with warning to restart machine.
Done hardware test all OK.
May be kernel problem so will try restart from my spare drive tomorrow and run hard drive through Disk warrior in case this is the problem.
Other than that any other ideas gratefully received.

It sounds like you are having kernel panics. I would suggest resetting the PRAM - instructions at Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM. Your symptoms sound similar to a problem that I once had and resetting the PRAM and NVRAM solved the problem.
If that does not work, there is a detailed troubleshooting guide at: Resolving Kernel Panics.

Bad or incompatible RAM is, more often then not, the cause of most Kernel Panics. It could also just need to be reset.

  • Gray Startup Screen Stays Up -- Then Restarts

Well, I just tried restarting my Mac... It was taking forever after hitting "Restart" to close all the open applications, even with my assistance, so I held in the back button for a few seconds to do it manually.
Upon restarting, it hung on the screen with the Apple logo and the loading symbol for around 2 minutes, then restart.
    It keeps doing this.
I figured I'd repair the disc with Disc Utility on the disc that came with my Mac, so I put it in and booted into it.
I got to Disc Utility, and "Repair Disc" was grayed out, so I hit "Verify Disc," thinking maybe I had to do that first.
Then, after verifying, it said, in red -
    invalid index key
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
*Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.*
Anyone know how I can fix this without reformatting?
I'd appreciate it. I should be in bed, have to get up early, but I'm having lots of trouble getting to sleep with my Mac in this state.
    Thanks

You cannot repair the startup volume. You need to do the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

  • On new MBP I keep getting message that I need to shut down and then restart

I just got a new 13" MBP. I took the old 500GB 7200 rpm HD (which was operating perfectly) out of my old 13" white MB and put it in the new MBP. Now at boot I get as far as a gray screen, then I get a black screen with text in several languages saying that I need to shut off and then restart the computer. I went through this drill 5 times with no indication that anything was improving. I am sure that the edge card connector is fully seated on the old HD. Any ideas as to what is happening here?

The Operating System for the old and new machine is different, you can't just swap drives like that, what you're getting is a Kernel Panic.
You need to install the OS from the install discs that came with the new machine onto that hard drive. Boot from your new install DVD (hold c at start) and do an Archive Install of the OS so it saves your user data.

  • Sometimes on startup, Foxfire starts as a process rather than an application such that I have to end it as a process then restart it as an application

When I click on the foxfire icon, the sound of the disk is heard. This soon stops. The hourglass appears for a short time and then disappears. There are no other signs that the program is running as a process other than using Windows TaskManager and looking in the process list. When this happen, I delete foxfire as a process and then restart it as I normally do. This usually works in getting it started.

Although possibly not related to your problem, I have to remind you that the version of Firefox you are using at the moment has been discontinued and is no longer supported. On top of this, it has known unpatched bugs and security problems. I urge you to update to the latest version of Firefox, for maximum security, stability, performance and usability. You can get it for free, as always, at [http://www.getfirefox.com getfirefox.com].
As for your problem, it's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and themes and [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins this one] for plugins.
If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.
If the problem does not disappear when all add-ons are disabled, please tell me, so we can work from there. Please have no fear of following my instructions to the line, as all can be easily undone.

  • Black Restart Message-- happening every few minutes!

A few days ago, I was browsing the web, and a faded gray screen appeared with a restart message. It says something to the effect of "You need to restart your computer. Please hold down the restart button, etc." in about four different languages. So I restart the computer. The first day this started happening, I had to restart my computer 6 times. Then it was okay for a few days. It's been doing it again though-- today, it wouldn't even let me get past the start up window with the Apple on it. My computer would PING then would need to be restarted. I really have no idea what has been going on.
I've tried resetting the PRAM, resetting the Power Manager, updating my software, disconnecting it from the internet, running Virus Scans (which I've done several times)... I even had my friend Neil, a CS major at my school, come take a look at it. I don't know what else to do, and I'm about 100 miles from the nearest Apple Store. Help?

How did the logic board break? thats unfortunate, but atleast it got fixed, right?
i had one myself, it was random last month. I was using XP and it crashed an di did a restart, im assuming i was running too much memory intensive programs and xp couldnt handle it properly, it crashed an di rebooted to xp, then it just restarted at startup and i just let it boot into macosx and then restarted onces more then i got a black screen dialog with restarting options as i checked in About ZThis mac c befor eit restarted on me again i switched the 2x512 inRIser 1 to Riser 2 and vice versaas it was only showing 1gb of ram.
im being spooked by hardware problems, the reason i switched over to MAC, as my last pc had random issues even though i was component enough to know what i was doing. hah

  • Getting Startup Disk Full message since downloading new Safari update

I downloaded the new Safari update a few days ago… it took ages to do and whenever I now try to use Safari I get the Pinwheel of Death after about two minutes and then a message telling me my startup disk is full. It won't let me acknowledge the message or force-quit from Safari – I have to switch off at the button and restart.
All I have on my MacBook are 15 Word documents and the Applications it shipped with (in fact I’ve actually dumped some in an attempt to clear space, as ell as dumping the cache folders)… I only use it to surf the net in the evenings and have no music or pictures on it.
I'm not having this problem at all when using Firefox. Is it possible the update has a bug?

You really need a bit more space than that, but try a bit of maintanance:
Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.
    Background information here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
    and here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672
An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963
By the way, you can ignore any messages about SUID or ACL file permissions, as explained here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • Instant "restart message" on boot

    Help guys!
My perfect MBP 15" 2.16 suddenly last night during routine email gave me the gray "You need to restart your computer" message.
I haven't had one of these in a VERY LONG time since the early days of using Parallels.
I held down the button and restarted. I get the Apple Logo then instantly I get the same restart message.
I figured, Ok... My disk is blown somehow. Being a smart traveller I carry my install CD with me. So I put that in and restart. I hold down C and it does the same thing.
I wasn't sure if C was correct so I tried it again with Option and this gave me the choice of which startup disk to use. I had: Mac OS X, Windows XP, Installation CD
I tried all three. Mac OS X and Installation CD both give the restart message before anything else happens.
Windows XP appears to boot but during the boot process as it is showing it's little back and forth progress bar it suddenly reboots again.
Any ideas? I'm on a trip and getting this going would be a HUGE thing.

Ok... This is strange... I rebooted into single user mode, did a file system check, mounted the volume.
I was searching for instructions on how determine what kernel extension was causing the problems. I decided to just reboot.
So I typed reboot at the prompt. It rebooted perfectly and I held down CMD-V and watched the process hoping to catch the offending kernel extension and it rebooted just fine all the way into OS X!!!
Could it be that just shifting the RAM around fixed a crummy connection? Did running the hardware test twice with no errors fix something?
I'm nervous now. It's working but for how long? How do I find the root cause of the problem?
Again, Peter, Thanks for the initial help.

  • My iPhone would just randomly give me a blue screen and then restart--did that a bunch of times between Tuesday and last night. As of last night, it WILL NOT come back on. iTunes says it's in recovery mode....what does all of this mean???

Tuesday night I was texting a friend and when I went to open her message, my screen went blue and restarted. I just wrote it off as weird and went on about my business. Later that night, I tried to turn on my phone and it would not turn on. I plugged it up, held down the power button, and pressed the home button all numerous times. I looked online and it said to do a "hard reset" by holding down the power and home button at the same time--my phone then came on. Throughout Wednesday, it would give me a blue screen and restart--nothing major just really annoying. I took it to the local Verizon store where I bought the phone from and he said that it was some type of hardware defect and I was still under my year warranty so I could get a new one for free--the free phone won't be here until tomorrow, Saturday. I took it home and it didn't give me any trouble for a couple of hours. The next day it was cooperating and then I left town for a little while and it acted up (blue screen and then restarting) a few times. When I got home, it acted up again and so I restarted the phone and it was working fine. A few minutes later, I tried to check my messages and the phone was off again. No matter what I do, my phone will not come back to life. It had at least 45% battery last time I looked at it. I decided to plug the phone up to my computer and see what it did--my computer recognizes that there is a phone hooked to it and it says that it's in "recovery mode". It also said that if I'm having issues with my phone, that I need to reset the phone via iTunes. I guess the questions that arise are
    1. Why is my phone doing this?
    2. If I reset my phone, will it go back to working again? I ask that because I don't want Verizon to charge me $300 when they send me the replacement phone and I won't need it (assuming that the phone decides to work once it's been reset).
    3. What type of hardware defect is this that is causing this issue, not only with my iPhone 5S but others as well?
    4. Shouldn't people be notifying Apple and letting them know that they need to fix this issue?
    5. Should I report this issue to Apple even though I didn't buy the phone directly from them, but through Verizon?
Any help that anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated! This whole situation has me stressed out and seriously confused.

    Hi, beth.lau.gr.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand you have been experiencing issues with your iPhone restarting and showing you a blue screen.  I wont be able to give you an exact answer as to why this is happening.  However, this is the most relevant troubleshooting article for this issue.  This article also provides options to reach out to us via phone for additional assistance.
If your iOS device restarts, displays the Apple logo, or powers off while you're using it

  • My MacBook Pro is freezing and then restarts.  Kernal Log showing I/O errors

My MacBook Pro is freezing up and then restarts.  It started happening about 2 weeks ago.  After several attempts to resolve it, I did a clean install of snow leopard.  And then did a SW Update.  I have no thrid party devices, ram, or HD.  My machine is 2 GHz Intel Core Duo.  2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
My Kernel log is showing a bunch of I/O errors.   I think I have a sick baby.  Any thoughts

William, Thank you.  I did do the reformat with the DVD SL Disk Utility with the write zeros once option.
I think the way to go is buy a new HD.  They are cheap enough.  In researching this, I found some discussions that there are some possible issues with using the newer SATA 3.0 GBs drive on my old intel core due macbook pro.
    Here are 2 threads - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2673222?threadID=2673222&tstart=180 and http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/apple-notebooks/206962-will-hard-drive-fit-my-m acbook.html
Do you have an opinion on that?
    I found this one http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Western+Digital+-+Scorpio+Blue+250GB+Internal+Serial +ATA+Hard+Drive+for+Laptops/9024147.p?id=1218012522486&skuId=9024147&st=WDBABB25 00ANC-NRSN&cp=1&lp=1
which looks like it is compatible.
Am I better off buying a genuine apple replacement or an OEM?
    Thanks

  • Trying to download song from iTunes on my iPhone 4, it downloads 2.2mb, then restarts; does this about 3-4 times, then says unable to download... I can't get it to download the song at all. Can't even delete the song from the download queue or anything.

It's starting to **** me off, especially since there is no visible "settings" in iTunes. I've tried resuming the download, it just downloads to 2.2mb and then restarts 3-4 times again, I've tried restarting my phone, I've looked up stuff, but can't find a **** thing that works. One thing said to swipe to the left from the down arrow on the right of the download (the tap to resume button), but the delete option doesn't show up when I do that... Anybody have any idea how I can just get my PURCHASED song to actually download?

    Similar issues here.
I purchased five movies for download and having nothing but problems getting them downloaded. I keep receiving error messages and the download stops and I have to restart it, just to get another minute worth of download with each restart. Now Apple has my money and I have nothing.
