Startup troubles

I ran an update and now I'm stuck on a screen with a bunch of codes and can't start up

What update?
What OSX are you running (you can find this by clicking on the Apple in themenu bar>about this Mac, it should say which version.  (iOS is for iPhones, iPods, iPads, Macs run OSX)
This will help anyone reading this to offer advice and suggestions.

  • Startup trouble - looking for startup disk

I've been experiencing occasional start up trouble for a few weeks, where my iMac takes a long time on the startup phase (getting stuck on a blank gray screen), and on 3 occasions it has just come up with a folder with blinking question mark (can't find startup disk) icon. When this happens, I hold my breath and manually restart, and so far it's then started right up (knock on wood). But obviously this is worrisome.
I did recently swap out some RAM (trading out one card from 1GB to 2GB), and since the Apple store no longer carries the appropriate RAM for my iMac (fall 2006), I can to buy it elsewhere, but that seemed to go fine... could it have affected my startup?
Another, probably unrelated issue, is that when I do start up successfully, or even come up from sleep, the computer now makes a big POP sound. I have a JBL "creature" amp with little speakers plugged into the computer, but it doesn't seem to be that - it's definitely an in-computer sound. Could the sound card be going bad, or somehow affected by the start up problem or the new RAM? I'm guessing it's an unrelated thing, but wanted to include as much info as possible.

    Hi Jessamyn
Many times a connected External HD, iPod or other storage device can cause the startup manager to have a problem finding your startup volume, first disconnect all other storage devices to see if that helps. Second go to *System Preferences > Startup Disk* and select the *Mac OS X, 10.4 on Macintosh HD* click the lock and restart.
If you are still having a startup issue then use the following link for testing and repairing your startup disk: > http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1018.html

  • Startup trouble

    Hi,
I have a problem with starting my NW2004s system after a sytem copy
Startsap reports the instance has been started and the databade is also up.
But I cannot start the gui, says connection refused.
The sappfpar does not report any errors.
How do I go about trouble shooting. Where do i start?
    Thanks in advance

    Hello Shabnam,
Can you please provide the information of your SAP , OS and database that you are using for Nw04s.
Incase if you are working with Unix flavour -
then fire the cmd-> ps -ef | grep sap . And you will get all the processes related to SAP (incase if it is running).
Incase if your on having Windows -OS then please go to task manager and in that go to processess tab and there you should find certain process with name disp+work , jlaunch , in the name of <sidadm> - so this indicated that atleast your SAP system is runnning.
    Regards,

  • PowerBook 145B Startup Trouble

So I have this PowerBook 145B. It will start up with the regular startup sound and a slight click on the speaker, and the drive stays spinning, but the screen stays blank. The pointer is on the screen and can be moved by the trackball, but nothing happens. I tried putting in the 'Disk Tools' disk to troubleshoot at startup, but the computer won't read it.
Any ideas as to what I can do?
All I really want is to get the data I need off the computer. I only know of one place that can help me do this in New York--Tekserve--and that's if the computer is working. I had a BAD experience there and don't want to go back. The computer is so old that the guys at the Mac Store couldn't help me transfer the data when I bought my new iBook.
Any advice on how to fix the startup problem, or advice on where to go for repair/help (I live in New York) would be very appreciated. Thanks a lot.
    PowerBook 145B   Other OS

    Very good!
At this point, if the computer will let you start from the internal hard disk (with or without holding down the Shift key), I recommend that you immediately save (copy) at least the most important files to one or more floppies.
It would not be a bad idea to verify the hard-disk structure via Disk First Aid on the Disk Tools floppy (repair if errors are reported).
It is also possible that the hard disk drive driver software needs to be updated. To do so, use the update function in Apple HD SC Setup. Do NOT initialise the hard disk.
Since you have access to an external (USB) floppy drive for the iBook, a transfer via diskettes is probably going to be the easiest way. Files larger than approx. 1.3 MB can be segmented, if necessary.

  • Weird startup trouble - system not properly initializing.

Hi guys, I'd appreciate any help you can give.
The trouble is that the system isn't properly starting up. I haven't changed anything since it last booted properly except for a pacman -Syu system upgrade.
    http://imageshack.com/a/img36/4375/0dse.jpg
I tried fixing the "dirty bit" in /dev/sdb1 (my boot partition), but it has since come back. How am I supposed to check systemctl logs if I don't have a working system?? Why, systemd, why?
Anyway, what should I do to diagnose the problem?

There seem to be a number of possibilities. If you search the forums, you can follow up the leads which match the possibilities on your system e.g. it seems to depend on file system, maybe blocksize, various fs settings/tunables, etc.
As a side note, journalctl apparently doesn't work on a live USB under those circumstances.
What error did you get? And did you direct it at the journal? Or did you try to chroot?

  • Elements 6.0 startup trouble

I am running Windows Vista. Photoshop Elements 6.0 that came with my Wacom tablet is giving me trouble for the first time as I am trying to install it to a new computer. It is completely installed and is completely compatible with all of my system specifications, but when I try to open the program, it loads up then... nothing. No photoshop, no start screen, no anything.
I have installed this photoshop to several other computers. Please help! I have work I need to finish soon!

    Try these options:
    1) In the Organizer; under File->Catalog, select your catalog and click Optimize. OR
    2) In the Organizer; under File->Catalog, select your catalog and click Repair. OR
    3) Try rebuilding the thumbnails as per these steps:
3.1. In Help > System Info, find the folder containing your catalog.
    3.2. Exit PSE.
3.3. In that folder, delete the file “thumb.5.cache”.
    3.4. Restart PSE.
    3.5. Edit > Select All.

  • Startup trouble, won't update and says "operating system not found"

So when I tried updating to the new thunderbolt update thingy (yes I know, VERY late but I kept forgetting to update it and I didnt have time) it didnt start up because it said "operating system not found" after 30 mins of looking around for tips to reboot they didnt work,
I troed rebooting and it worked, and I followed the instructions to "download Mac OS X Lion" again. But it wont redownload because this reason:
"You can't upgrade this version of Mac OS X because a newer version is installed."
I have tried everything and since I downloaded the thunderbolt REALLY late I dont think anyone else had had this problem.
    Help me please?

If not, then Startup from your OS X Install DVD, skip the installer and see if Disk Utility on the Install DVD see's your Macintosh HD startup volume? If so, then use Disk Utility and attempt to Repair your Macintosh HD.

  • G5 startup trouble

Like an idiot, I accidentally posted this in the wrong forum the first time...here goes...
    Ok here's the deal...
Using the computer last night, it freezes up while using Safari. I try to force quit. Nothing. Turned it off by holding down the power button. Waited about a minute and turned it back on.
It got to the grey Apple startup screen, did a few revolutions of the spinning wheel at the bottom an then just shut itself down. Just like that, no error messages or anything.
I've tried holding down the eject key in the hopes that I could slip a startup CD. Tried holding down 'C' to get it to boot off the DVD drive. Tried zapping the pram. Tried holding down shift to turn off extensions. Tried praying to every deity I had ever heard of.
    Nothing.
    Any thoughts?
I am (well, was) running 10.4.4 on a single processor 1.8 GHz G5.

Same thing happened to me a few months ago, and Hartz pointed me in the right direction.
    1. Make sure you have the latest update of Safari.
If you do and it still happens,
    2. From MacFixit:
One of the most interesting pieces of feedback to the report came from MacFixIt reader Wes Palmer, who found out a specific way to reproduce the issue with a high level of consistency and a workaround based on that information.
Wes writes: "With Etherpeek running, I was able to force the failure by doing repeated reloads of a particular page in FireFox. It never took more than 6 reloads to fail. Every single time, the last DNS packet received was for js.adsonar.com. I was then able to force a failure outside of FireFox using that address and ping. I added an entry to /etc/hosts:
    127.0.0.1 js.adsonar.com
"to avoid any DNS queries of that site and have been unable to force a failure since. I'm out of time this morning, so haven't been able to confirm these results with a lot of certainty, but so far they seem consistent and repeatable."
The method for modifying the /etc/hosts entry to disable access to the host js.adsonar.com -- a company that hosts ads used on several Web sites -- as indicated above by Wes is as follows:
Enter the following command in the Terminal (located in Applications/Utilities) and press return:
    sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/hosts
This will open the /etc/hosts file in the TextEdit application.
    Add the line:
    127.0.0.1 js.adsonar.com
to the end of the file (under hosts) and save. You'll be running in root at this point, so quit TextEdit immediately and do not modify any other files.
Launch your favorite Web browser and check for persistence of the issue.

  • Startup trouble and kernal panics

Okay, I feel like crying . . . I am not that Mac savy so here is the dilemna.
When I startup my IMAC the screen will either
    1. Go to a grey screen with different languages telling me to restart ( I have been reading about Kernal panics . . . )
    2. Computer starts up and the picture is all jagged with lines running horizontally through it and it is shaking . . . freezes or then it goes to restart screen.
I have reinstalled the MAC OSX software and then it is fine. But I have not done an erase and install. I am in the process of backing up my system. But if I shut it down or restart, it starts all over again . . .
Do I have a serious problem ? Here is the other problem . . . we do not have the extended warranty. We bought it before the warranty was up, but did not register it before the year ran out . .. A MAJOR MISTAKE!!! Now I am really crying . . .
    Thanks for any help possible.

    I MAC G5   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

Hi Laura, welcome to Discussions, sorry your first post has to be so traumatc!
Once you have backed up your system (very good idea), insert your startup disc and run the Extended Hardware Test. That might indicate what your problem is. Also, if you have a Rev A iMac (without iSight or ambient light sensor, you can check this site iMac release dates to see which model you have), see if your serial number falls within the range of the Repair Extension Program, which will repair your machine for free if it's included.
Do post back with your results, hope this is a little reassuring, all is not lost.

  • Dual 1.42GHz MDD startup troubles

    Greetings Mac fans,
Just started having lots of trouble starting up my Pwer Mac dual 1.42GHz MDD. When I do get it to boot up the date is set to 1969 (a good year by the way).
Anyway, I suspect the battery on the logic board is weak.
What is the size/style/# of this battery so I can buy the right one at Radio Shack?
    Thanks!

Thanks Douggo. I went out to Radio Shack and got the battery today.
Had a bit of trouble replacing the battery because my NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4600 video card was blocking the battery slot. The card runs the full length of the machine, front to back, obstructing the easy extrication of battery.
While pulling out the card there was a spark and smoke from the AGP slot. I got real nervous 'cause I though I'd fried the card or slot! But thankfully the computer started up and the display works. What a pain just to replace this measly little battery.

  • MSI KT3 Ultra ARU Startup Trouble

I am running an MSI KT3 Ultra ARU Mainboard with an amd athlon xp 1500+ processor, a GeForce4 Ti4200 made by Gainward (64mb), two AOC 120MM case fans, one 80mm case fan, a thermaltake volcano 7 speed variable Heatsink, two crucial 512MB pc2100 DDR Ram Chips a sony 16x12x40x cdrw and an LG 16x dvd rom, as well as a 20gig tape drive by HP and floppy drive.  The hard drive is a maxtor diamondmax 60GB.  all this powerd by an Antec 350W PSU.
Specs over with, heres the problem
I can only boot from floppy disk.  Booting from the hard disk gives me an "Error Loading Operating System" error, I have tried two other drives and both of these drives have OS's on them, winnt4 and winxp respectively.  The Maxtor drive is clean but not new, I am formatting it as we speak to see if that works.  I have tried to boot from a bootable win2k cd on two different CDRW drives as well as an old CD Rom drive, and a DVD rom drive.  I always get this error "Searching for Boot Record from CD.....None Found" proceeded by the "Error Loading Operating System" error.  I am running everything off the three IDE plugs, with round IDE cable(I have tried flat ones, no luck with those either)  I am not attempting to run this in a RAID array at all.
Anyone got any ideas as to why this problem would be occuring????

    hi nailz,
Hope this may solve your problem. In the BIOS, Advanced BIOS Features, set "Boot Sequency" 1st, 2nd, 3rd boot devices to the SAME one, ie Floppy for all, or 1st Master HDD for all. Then reboot. Disable "Try boot device' first. Repeat this until you get the board to boot the device.
    If can't,
    Clear the CMOS and retry.
    If can't,
(In the BIOS) select all IDE devices and set to NONE. Set "Clear NVRAM" in PCI Configuration. Save and exit the BIOS, then re-entering BIOS in the next boot, enable all IDE devices. Save and exit, re-enter BIOS once more, check the "Boot Sequence".
Yup... try changing around with IDE settings in the BIOS. Good luck.

  • Mac 9.2 startup trouble

I have a 'pewter' imac running 9.2 I recently got the new flat screen imac but haven't transfered my old stuff yet. The problem is I was letting my son play with the old one and he ran the virtual memory up to the max, left a file open on the desk top with a bunch of mpg movies in it and now when ever I try to start it up it boots up, it the desk top appears with all the fiels show until it's time for it to show the open folder with the movies in it - then it freezes. I tried several times to start it up but it always does the same thing
Help! I need the files from the old mac! What do I do?
    Brian

Restart the computer with the Shift key held down and turn off virtual memory; you may also need to press the Option key as the Finder loads.

Run the hardware tests from Install DVD1 (hold down d at boot) and see what errors it finds.

Check out this FAQ, and see if any of this applies to you.
Try reinstalling your operating system with the discs that came with your iBook, and if you're still having problems, give Apple a call, and let them know that you most likely have a hardware defect in your iBook.
They are required to repair this for you at no cost.
