Startup Volume screen keeps on appearing - no keys pressed though

I've had this problem since I've had my Mac mini (about a year now). Sometimes the startup volume screen appears despite not having any other Hard Drives connected apart from the boot drive (which is the internal Hard drive) and despite not pressing any keyboard keys on startup.
I am using 10.5.2 with the latest mini firmware and am unable to think what could be causing this? I have selected my main hard-drive in the startup disk preferences and have no permissions/hard drive problems (so says disk utility) but the problem persists. It's a minor annoyance but one I would welcome any help with.
Many thanks,
Paul

Hi and many thanks for the reply.
The only drive I attach is a firewire one to do time machine backups but I always disconnect it once I've finished backing up (the firewire lead is still attached to my Mac though, just not to the drive).
The SMART status of the drive in Disk Utility is verified.
I've taken this Mac back once to be repaired for this problem but they found nothing wrong with it. It is a very intermittent problem though and only occurs rarely. A small, but annoying niggle. I am also using a KVM switch but I didn't have this problem with my last Mac, another mini, connected to the same KVM.

  • Mac mini occasionally boots in startup volume screen (SOLVED).

Because the original post is archived I thought I would post the answer in a new thread. The answer to this problem was to replace the network cable connecting my Mac mini to my Apple router.
I think the previous faulty cable was causing the mini to do a phantom network boot and that's why the startup volume screen came up from time to time.
Since, the cable change no more startup volume screen problem.
Phew, this has been bugging me ever since I bought my mini. It's nice to know sometimes it's the simple answers that work

I have a similar problem. Whenever I startup my Mac Mini, an icon of the "Macintosh HD" appears in the middle of the screen. It doesn't go away until I click on it. After that, every thing works fine... until I use Safari. If I use Safari long enough, some type of glitch occurs that doesn't let me type correctly; Safari will stop working as it should be, and every time i try to type, some really weird symbols appear, like these ones: ßêÄ©¶¢. The only option I have left is to restart the computer, over, and over, and over again. Please help!!!!

  • Imac 21"  I keep getting ggh'l  and the speaker volume screen keeps popping up.  Any ideas of what is causing this and how to fix it?

I recently converted from the PC world to Apple and got an IMAC 21".  I keep getting the speaker volume screen popping up periodically and also types in ggh'l into whatever application I have open.  I have the lastest software and have McAfee antivirus installed.  This is a recent problem in the last few days so I'm not sure what is causing it.  Any ideas/suggestions?

  • Mac does not show startup volumes

Hello, I've got a problem with my MBP!
It's the latest model (Core i7) and I'm using it with an Intel X25-M G2 SSD (160GB).
On a third partition of the SSD, I installed Windows 7.
    (a little gaming, a few win-only applications)
Booting Windows (or from CD/DVD) should be possible by holding down ALT.
This worked fine for years on my old devices - But this does not work with my new MBP! Holding ALT during startup ends with a grey screen showing nothing! Without ALT, my MBP boots OSX. In the System Preferences I can choose to reboot to Windows (or from a CD/DVD). This works without problems, Windows boots...
But why can't I select my bootdevice by starting with ALT down? Any Ideas?
And please don't tell me to install reFit! I'll never do so!
I'm asking because I'm a little afraid of what to do in the case of reinstalling OSX to a broken/empty Drive where I can't select my bootdevice from within the running OS...

I definitely do not need to modify my Mac that way.
Selecting the startup-volume is possible without refit, or at least should be and works on many many Macs I know/own.
As long as a feature is provided by any "preinstalled Tool" I wont use 3rd party. If a feature is missing I write my own program - but I'm not going to write my own bootloader...
So why does my 2010 MBP have problems with showing startup volumes when booting with the "ALT"-Key?

  • Volume bar won't appear.

Hi, My volume bar used to appear when I pressed the buttons on my keyboard, but now it doesn't. The volume will still go up or down I just would like to see it on the screen like I used to be able to. I tried reinstalling HP Mediasmart Smartmenu and uninstalling the keyboard driver and reinstalling and still not working. Someone please help? Thanks!

    Hi,
You can try one step though it might look very simple but has worked many times to fix this problem.."Hard Reset"..Perform the steps exactly as it says and check if it works..
Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues
    Note:
If you have HP Support Assistant installed on the computer(The Blue Question Mark) then open it ==> Complete all pending Updates & Tuneups==> Restart and Check. It may solve your problem
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

  • Key press sound

Why in ringtones + sounds the option of key press is given in Nokia lumia 710, I always keep tick on the key press but it never makes a sound when I press a key. Is there any problem with the phone or it is by default didn't make any sound when we press key.
    Any advice will be helpful.

Key press sound works when the onscreen keypad is active not all around the menu. My Lumis 710 exhibits same behaviour, your phone is normal.

  • Volume logo keeps appearing on screen of ipad Air

The volume logo keeps appearing on the screen of my new iPad Air. Please advise.

If you use your iPad in landscape mode (sideways) the volume up and down buttons might be hitting you lap and being activation end that way. Or a case may be putting pressure on the buttons. Or the buttons might be bad.
First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
If the problem persist and the above comments don't help Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

  • Hi, I hope someone can help.... When I open a new user account, which I want to set parental control on, the screen keeps freezing once the account is open. The wee rainbow circle appears and I can't do anything. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
Report any errors it found for Disk Repair, don't need the ones for Permissions Repair.
Try it again & see if anything changed, but have Activity Monitor open & Show All Processes & sorted on CPU%, also have Console open if we can... maybe not when switching, but we'll see.
Does this happen if you just try to create a new admin user???

  • Partition appearing twice in "startup volume menu"

I have two partitions on my MacBook : Macintosh HD 1 and Macintosh HD 2.
But when i'm booting holding the option (alt) key to select a startup volume the partitions Macintosh HD 1 and Recovery are ok but the volume "Macintosh HD 2" appears twice (basically i have from left to right : MHD 1, MHD 2, MHD 2, Recovery).
I've repaired my hard-drive, permissions... using Disk Utility but it didn't solve the issue.
I've tried to boot on both MHD 2 partitions and they are exactly the same, i think one of them is just an alias or something but i don't know how to delete it.
    It's not a big deal but it's awkward !
    Any idea ?

The duplicate Macintosh HD 2 appears only when i'm booting holding the option key not in Disk Utility !
    I'm getting this :

I updated to latest Safari version (7.0.4) but the problem persists.

The pop ups are malware. It's not necessary to reinstall Safari.

  • Shutdown screen and Volume level screens keep popping up

My friends Macbook 13" 2.4 GHz Intel core 2 duo running Os 10.5.8 is having problems. The screen "Are you sure you want to shutdown your computer now ?", keeps popping up. If you click cancel, it will pop up again in a few minutes and remain until some action is taken. Also underneath it, the speaker volume level screen pops up. If you leave the shutdown screen on, the speaker volume screen will continue to pop in and out. I booted from a external drive by USB with Os 10.6.8  and the screens after computer starts, still pop up.  ANYONE HAVE SOME INSIGHT ON WHATS CAUSING THIS? I don't think it's software related.
    ANY INFO APPRECIATED

Thanks for your Suggestions BDAqua, but it looks like possibly the top case and keyboard will have to be replaced. I cloned the internal drive to an external drive, and rebooted with the external. Then did a partitioning and clean Os install to the original internal drive.  After removing the external and booting off the new software install on the internal, the problem is still there.

If a Reset has not Resolved your issue... Try a Restore...
1: Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
2: If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane.
3: If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try using the steps in this article to force the device into recovery mode.

Unfortunately this is probably a hardware issue and you will need to take it to an Apple Store.

  • Soundmax Master Volume Panel KEEPS POPPING UP on the screen

I have had a Lenovo 3000 laptop for nearly four years.
Suddenly, for no reason I have this problem:
The  Soundmax  Audio HD  Master Volume Panel keeps popping up on the screen.   It's very intermittent and seemingly random:  sometimes it doesn't happen for 20 minutes;  then it pops up every few seconds.
Meanwhile it also often  ( but not always ) mutes itself so I have to unmute it to listen to anything.
Whether connected or not the microphone has also not worked for some months now though as I have another machine for Skypeing I don't bother too much about that lack of facility.
Again, I don't know it it is a related problem but sometimes in whatever window I am - maybe a webpage, maybe a wordprocessing page -  totally random letters keep popping up along the screen  eg:
    #gdsfjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj
then after a while it stops.     My AVG program claims there is no virus anywhere in the system.
    Any suggestions gratefully received.

    Try removing your sleeve/casing.
