  • [SOLVED]startx fails to start new xsession

    Hi,
I am having a very odd problem.  Everytime I try to start a new xsession with startx, it fails.  It is odd, because I can run one xsession (typing this inside xfce).  However, trying to manually start an xsession always fails.  It is a relatively vanilla install of Xorg.
Whenever I try to run startx, X starts, then immediately closes.  No errors or warning (at least that I can see).  I check the Xorg logs, and no errors either.
I am not even sure how to proceed troubleshooting this problem (due to the lack of errors).  Any advice would greatly be appreciated.  Thank you.

For clarity, are you trying to start more than one xsession?
As far as I know, you need to do that through either GDM or KDM.  I don't think XDM or SLiM have the ability -- but I could be wrong.
I don't know the proper incantation for GDM (It is in the Wikis).
For KDM, from within an operating X session, issue the command kdmctl reserve
That should start a new login screen on the next VT not already in use by a tty.  Most systems are set up such that you can switch between sessions.  To get to the first XSession  enter Alt-F7, go the the second by entering Alt-F8, and so on.  I know this to work under KDM and Xxce4.
Edit: I was posting at the same time as hokasch.  I could be wrong about having to use a login manager.  I'll have to check that out when I get home.

  • After using VMware once, boot camp partition fails to start up

    Start up repair also failed.
I just installed Windows 7 64-bit onto my brand new macbook pro using boot camp. Everything went fine, I installed the drivers and everything worked perfectly.
I then installed a couple games (Maplestory and L4D)
    Neither of them worked.
I went back to Leopard and started up VMware Fusion just to mess around with Windows. Actually, all I did was re-install L4D. L4D started and worked. Surprised, I tried maplestory. It worked as well. Then I curiously restarted in windows. BSOD. Failed to start. Repair failed.
    Someone shed some light?
EDIT: After restarting a couple more times Windows started. Neither of my games work though, only in VMware. Anyone know why?

Actually for me it worked perfectly under Vista Ultimate x64, and yes I do actually get an error it's error -2147467259 (unspecified error)
Compatibility mode does not work as the new "Hack Shield" prevents this....it thinks I wanna hack the game and just says maplestory will not start in compatibility mode.
Thanks for your reply by the way
EDIT: Forgot to say, all the drivers work fine. What bugs me though is that it works in VMware..

Have you looked in this log file to see why the OCR is inaccessible? Have you looked in the ASM instance's alert log for other clues?

I suggest reinstalling X11. It's working here. This is the output I'm getting launching, getting an X11 window, and then quitting. I don't use it, but do check that it launches correctly. BTW, I suggest posting to the Unix forum under OS X Technologies, where X11 mavens congregate.

  • Failed to connect to VMware web service: Invalid keystore

    Hi,
We have a CPO 2.3.1 that refuses to connect to vCenter (see log extract at the end of the post).
We recently changed our vCenter server (part of an update to 5.1).
    We tried following workarounds:
remove and add all platform elements from the portal using SE services
re import automation packs (the 4 from the Starter Edition v2.3.1.38)
    re set the keystore password
    No change at all...
Would you have a clue on how to correct that?
    Thank you.
    Regards,
    Pierre

You have an invalid keystore file because the HTTPS certification has changed. You need to delete the old keystore file and restart the CPO server and then reconnect/run something against vCenter.
There is also a possibility for Adatper Host Framework/java issues that I have seen commonly.
If you need more help, you'll need to open a TAC case with your services contract please. We normally try to not troubleshoot logs on the forums.

  • Hyper-V - 'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'

    Hi all,
    Having a bit of a nightmare with Hyper-V on my Windows 8 Pro laptop - Whenever I create a new VM and try to start it I receive the following error;
'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'
I sometimes also receive an error saying something along the lines of 'Unable to change virtual machine state'
I have done a lot of searching a seen two common answers - The first is to try removing the Hyper-V role and re-adding it - I have tried this several times to no avail. (Intel VT and all virtualisation capabilities are enabled in BIOS). The second issue
    it would seem
some people have had relates to editing the VMX configuration file and adding the line
hypervisor.cpuid.v0 = "FALSE" - I thought VMX files were only present in VMware Virtual Machines...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.
    James

The hypervisor event log message is generated only at boot - so this would be expected.  Also vmbus should not be running on the host (I was looking at a VM yesterday)...  This error message is generated only when the vid is determined not to be
running or cannot communicate with the hypervisor.
I have seen this due to anti-virus software in the past or due to driver verifier being configured.  Since it looks like you checked driver verifier already do you have anti-virus software installed?  If so have you followed the best practices
    and exempted the Hyper-v services?
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd283088(WS.10).aspx
To resolve this problem, configure the real-time scanning component within your antivirus software to exclude the following directories and files:
Default virtual machine configuration directory (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V)
    Custom virtual machine configuration directories
Default virtual hard disk drive directory (C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Disks)
Custom virtual hard disk drive directories
Custom replication data directories, if you are using Hyper-V Replica
    Snapshot directories
Vmms.exe (Note: This file may have to be configured as a process exclusion within the antivirus software.)
Vmwp.exe (Note: This file may have to be configured as a process exclusion within the antivirus software.)

  • 10g database fails to start after 3rd reboot

    Hi,
I've reloaded my test server several times and loaded 10g with the default "orcl" database. Works just fine, reboot a couple times and it still works. Around the 3rd reboot the database instance fails to start. I even have to reload the OS to clear this problem. Just uninstalling Oracle and reinstalling will not clear this problem I have to reload the OS. Is there some sort of limit on the software we download from the OTN download area?
    Thanks.

I found in another post that suggested I needed to update my listener.ora file. I did that and the error went to telling me that oracle was unavailable. Then I found a post that suggested this:
    Set oracle_sid=orcl
    SQLPLUS /NOLOG
    CONN SYS/????@orcl AS SYSDBA
    STARTUP
    EXIT
Ran this and sure enough, the database was ok but sitting idle. It went through some initialization steps and mounted so I can now launch the manager tool and have access to my database.
So, ok, this is running on VMware and that "might" be causing the problems but this is very strange since it survived three reboots then out of the blue this issue comes up. I can live with running a batch file everytime I reboot in my little test environment so I'm ok :]
    Thanks for your time.

  • GDM fails to start XFCE4

    Hi,
I've a fully updated Arch 686/XFCE4 system configured (inittab) to automatically start in graphic mode(5).
I can login and start XFCE4.8 using SLIM, yet, as SLIM won't display existing users, I'd rather use GDM.
However, both GDM and XDM  fail to start XFCE.
While using GDM I get displayed the existing users, yet, tail of everything log, already shows errors-see gdm1.log below.
Once I select a user, enter PW, I get a very partial GNOME desktop!-see gdm2.log below.
Please advise how use GDM to start XFCE!

    Thanks for the replies.
I tried both Slim, XDM and the updated GDM with the same result, suggesting it's the way the login managers are calling the XFCE4 session that is the problem, not the login managers.
Kern, unfortunately your tip didn't seem to work for me.
Too much stuffing around - back to using startx, I think.

I don't have a server at hand right now ( that machine is busy with an OSX install, on a different partition ) but you could start by looking for any Adobe document that even mentions VC++ 2008.
In other words, at least for the desktop version of CS4 the oficial compiler is the VC 2005 SP1 .
Express should be no problem, I use it myself: "VS80sp1-KB926748-X86-INTL.exe"
You'll also need the matching Windows SDK. Watch out for something labeled "5.2.3790.2075.51.PlatformSDK_Svr2003R2_rtm.dmg"
    Hth,
    Dirk
Afterthought: funny that this thread always pops up when my experimental machine is busy ;-)

  • 'Failed to start Light Display Manager'

    Introduction removed
I'm having some trouble with xorg, 'startx' refused to work (I have xorg-server obviously). I read symlinks and configs that are meant to be present in /etc and /usr, and I can't detect anything abnormal. I have the non-proprietary xf86-video-intel drivers installed, and I don't think any config is required on those.
And of course, the PC won't boot directly into the OS now, with the message:
[FAILED] Failed to start Light Display Manager.
See 'systemctl status lightdm.service' for details.
    [OK] Reached target Graphical Interface.
I have no way of typing into the console, and therefore logging on, when this error is present.

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … _boot_into
EDIT: you'd want to specify the multi-user target.  If you need help adding this to your kernel line while booting up, this would depend on which boot loader you use.  With grub legacy you'd hit 'e' on the menu screen to edit the kernel parameters.  With syslinux it is tab ... I think.  With the new grub, I'm not sure, it may still be 'e'.

    PRCR-1079 : Failed to start resource ora.rac.db
ORA-01092 : ORACLE instance terminated. Disconnection forced
    ORA-00704 : bootstrap process failure
ORA-00604 : error occurred at resursiive SQL level 2
    ORA-01578 : ORACLE data block corrupted (file # 1, block # 5505)
    ORA-01110 : data file 1:'+DATA/rac/datafile/system.256.799676855'
    Process ID : 23498
    Session ID : 63 Serial number 3
    CRS-2674 Start of 'ora.rac.db' on 'rac2' failed
CRS-2632 There are no more servers to try to place resource 'ora.rac.db' on that would satisfy its placement policy
There are no logs on that node (rac2)
I am running Oracle Linux 5.4 64 bit
As mentioned above this was my 2nd attempt afresh and I got the same errors both the times, please let me know what is the problem as the rac2 is replica of rac2 in VMWare.
    Thanks for your help

    Hi
I tried again for the 3rd time and go the same error again, this time I rebuilt the node 2 - Can someone ple ase help me with this issue why it keeps failing on node 2 at the same stage for the 2rd time in a row.
Also please help me clone the database manually from node 1 to node 2 so I don't have to try to reinstall it again, there must be ways to do it
Thanks for your help in advance

  • [SOLVED] windows7 host, virtual box vm, archlinux guest, startx fails

    Hello
I am trying to get startx to work with a archlinux guest.
I have installed vbox guest and utils packages with pacman.
I have installed libxcomposite with pacman.
I have the modules loaded vboxvideo, vboxsf, vboxguest.
When I startx, I get EE /dev/dri/card0 failed to start DRM interface, finally I get server terminated successfully.
Ive tried to not use an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, a xorg.conf file created with configure and NoAcell to disable drm for vesa and fbdev.  Neither works.

I have installed all of those. xorg-xinit, xorg-twm, etc.
And Saint, the other lines in the xorg log are fine.  There is only one error when starting up X. It is this:
EE /dev/dri/card0 failed to start DRM interface
However, per your request here is the log.
