Startx terminates as a user

When my sysem fist boots up i log in with my user.  When i go to startx i get halfway through the kdebooting up and it kills the program and puts me back at the terminal.  I used hwd -s to create my xorg.conf file.  The strange thing is when i log into root startx will boot kde fine.  This is what i don't understand==>  After i log out of root and log back in with my user i can now startx and kde boots up fine.  So after i reboot i have to login as root startx log out. Log in as my user and startx again to use kde.  I don't know if its a permission problem or what.  Any help would be appreciated.  I am new to arch and learning my way around the system pretty fast.   I would post my xlog or xerror log but i don't know where it is.  Any help would be appreciated.
digi

Sorry i couldn't post back for a while.  I had to go to work.  But yea me and linux have a tough love kind of relationship.  Well here is my log file after i reboot and sign in as a user and try to startx.  And to that other post no i am not try to su then startx if thats what your asking.  Thanks again for lookin at this.  Also just curious what dameons do i run to help out kde in the rc.conf.  I saw it in some post here or somewhere else?

  • Terminate loop in user decision step

    Dear Experts,
                         I have a user decision step in my workflow; which has two buttons e.g; approve and reject buttons. this step is in the loop. I want to terminate the loop when user click on Approve button. How I should capture the ID of approve button. OR there is some other idea to terminate the loop; as I don't have any other condition to stop the loop.
    Regards,
    Sohail

    Hi Sohail,
    Create one workflow container (e.g. APPR_FLAG) of type CHAR1. Then just after APPROVE branch of user decision step create one 'container operation'  step and set the APPR_FLAG to X. finally in you loop end condition put terminating condition as APPR_FLAG = X. So this your loop will terminate once qgent clicks on APPTOVE button.
    Regards,
    Ibrahm

    I have no idea what's going on. I'm pretty sure I have my permissions set correctly, but right now running startx as a non-root user dumps me back out. Here's my log file:

  • Terminate service upon user login, batch script

    Hi there,
    We have around ~100 computer that are solid state hard drive equipped. Also, we have ~50 computer that have regular 7200 hard drives.
    I created a Group Policy that launches a batch script upon user login that terminates a particular service and attempts to "taskkill" a process. Here it is:
    sc stop backburner_srv_200
    taskkill /F /IM "3dsmax.exe"
    The problem is that if a computer, a user logs in to, is solid state hard drive equipped, the above script does not run, or perhaps does not have a chance to run? because solid state hard drive is so fast?
    I am at a loss.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks,

    > sc stop backburner_srv_200
    > taskkill /F /IM "3dsmax.exe"
    sc stop backburner_srv_200 >>%public%\log.txt 2>&1
    taskkill /F /IM "3dsmax.exe" >>%public%\log.txt 2>&1

  • How to terminate/destroy a user thread running in background?

    Hi All!
    I m using t.destroy() to stop a background running thread, as t.stop() is depricated in Java 2. I implement Runnable in the background thread. On calling t.destroy() NoSuchMethodException; don't know whats the problem there?

    I still don't see any solutions to the issues with performing a Runtime.exec, or stopping a thread from the outside.
    Here's my situation - I have need to make a framework that processes "work" asynchronously. Work is an abstract concept that is realized (an interface is implemented) by other classes. Work comes into the system and is persisted. A seperate mechanism gets the work and processes the work when possible.
    Processing "work" is an abstract concept that is realized (interface is implemented) by other classes.
    All the threading/asynchronous behavoir is in the framework.
    Thus I can't control how work processing occurs within the framework. At certain points I do have to be able to interrupt the work from the outside. Thus the framework threads are busy doing "work" (defined in a class not "known" to the framework) - but the framework has to shutdown.
    So I'm left with thread.stop
    Yes - the framework threads are designed around a volitile "continueProcessing" flag.
    Yes - some of the tasks can perform their work in piecemeal and use this flag.
    No - not all the work can be done in a piecemeal way.
    This whole framework is a solution to situations where multiple high-CPU, high-memory, asynchronous tasks get flooded into the app-server (we don't control the clients - they are outside this business).
    So we persist the request, and have a framework polling for more work. That way even if 10000 requests hit us as the same time (it has happened); we don't get floored.
    We tried sevlet and JMS processing, but those both have back-log limitations. We could poll for work, then send the request to a seperate JMS queue that terminates in a MDB but this exposes an entry point into work processing. And the whole point of this is to control the amount of processing occurring at any given time, without losing any of the requests.

  • Hot to terminate servlet when user abandons request?

    I am looking for a way to detect when a user has abandoned a request. I would like to be able to halt processing on any request that gets abandoned.

    There is no clean solution to this as there is no direct connection established from which on server side we can understand whether user has pressed STOP button of browser or exited the browser.
    There is a work around to this. Periodicall write some empty string to output stream of ServletResponse, if user has clicked on STOP button or exited the browser, you will get exception, so do not process request further.
    In case of PrintWriter, you need to call checkError() method after writing empty string.
    Is that fine with you?

  • Advice needed: many lines terminating to same user for multiple numbers...

    In our situation, there are many numbers that can terminate into one user for many different reasons. I.E. A help line for product A, and a sales line for product B. Some users have up to 14 different numbers that they will be responsible for. It is a CCM 4.2 envorionment, with unity unified msg. The user needs to be able to differentiate between the called numbers. Aside from using multiple lines on a sidecar 7914, is there an alternate solution for changing the appearance of the called number? Would forwarded route points be able to pass calling and called line information via the 7960 screen?
    Thank you.

    Yes, that will work. Take a look at the following post for the required steps.
    http://forum.cisco.com/eforum/servlet/NetProf?page=netprof&forum=IP%20Communications%20and%20Video&topic=IP%20Telephony&CommCmd=MB%3Fcmd%3Dpass_through%26location%3Doutline%40%5E1%40%40.1ddb5957/0#selected_message

  • How to terminate a java thread from c++ code?

    Hi,
    I made a screensaver which loads a jvm, forks a thread running a java class, wait until user's action(i.e. mouse move/click keyboard input), then terminate the java thread.
    However, I met a problem, How to terminate a running java thread from c++ code?
    Here is my code, but it does not work: (even after the terminate is called, jvm throws an error)
    JNIEnv* env;
    JavaVM* jvm;
    HANDLE hThread; //handle for the startThread
    unsigned __stdcall startThread(void *arg)
         jclass cls;
         jmethodID mainId;
         jint          res;
         int threadNum = (int)arg;
         res = jvm->AttachCurrentThread((void**)&env, NULL);
    cls = env->FindClass( MAIN_CLASS);
         mainId = env->GetStaticMethodID(cls, "main", "([Ljava/lang/String;)V");
         // setup the parameters to pass to main()
         jstring str;
         jobjectArray args;
         int i=0;
         args = env->NewObjectArray(1, env->FindClass("java/lang/String"), 0); //only one input parameters
         str = env->NewStringUTF("localhost");
         env->SetObjectArrayElement(args, 0, str);
         env->CallStaticVoidMethod(cls, mainId, args); // call main()
         if (env->ExceptionOccurred()) {
                   env->ExceptionDescribe();
         return TRUE;
    Here is the main method:
    First create the jvm and load the thread. then tries to terminate the thread, but failed here
    switch (msg)
    { case WM_CREATE:
              JavaVMOption options[NUMBEROFOPTIONS];
              JavaVMInitArgs vmargs;
              jint rc;
              vmargs.version = JNI_VERSION_1_4; /* version 1.4 */
              vmargs.options = options;
              vmargs.nOptions = NUMBEROFOPTIONS;
              vmargs.ignoreUnrecognized = JNI_FALSE;
              rc=JNI_CreateJavaVM( &jvm, (void **)&env, &vmargs ); /* create JVM */
              /* We pass the thread number as the argument to the invoked thread */
              unsigned int threadId = -1;
              // to initialize a thread-safe C runtime library
              hThread = (HANDLE)_beginthreadex(NULL, 0, &startThread, NULL, 0, &threadId );
    } break;
    case (WM_DESTROY):
              CloseHandle( hThread );
              jvm->DestroyJavaVM(); /* kill JVM */
              Debug("Destroy Java Virtual Machine\n");
    }break;
    Note, after the thread "startThread" runs, it has an infinite loop and will not terminate, until the user clicks to terminate.(I didn't call jvm->DetachCurrentThread();_endthreadex(0); in the "startThread" because the java thread will not terminate by itself)
    Thus, the only way to terminate the thread is to call closehandle(hthread) in the main thread, which may cause jvm to throw an error.
    Do you know how to terminate a java thread safely???
    Thanks a lot

    Assuming that your java thread is in a loop of some kind. Such as
    int i=1; /* I tried using a boolean, I just could not get my C++ env, to change this value. So i decided to use an int */
    run {
    while(i)
    isdfjsdfj
    void seti()
    i=0
    So, B/4, i call destroyVM in my C++ code, i call this seti(). so the loop terminates, therefore my thread finishes executing and ends.
    Hope this helps
    tola.

  • [SOLVED] startx works only as root

    Hi to all,
    I just installed arch on a vaio SVS13A with EFI and dual graphics, both HD4000 and nvidia. I am having troubles running X, startx works and shows the minimal environment only if I'm running it as root, if I'm running it as a normal user only a black screen appears and nothing happens, but there are no errors in Xorg.log. What's happening?
    A thing I noticed is that if I try to run
    Xorg -configure
    it is not able to do it because it says there are two screens and only one device or something like that (I'm sorry I can't remember well but I'll check next time). Maybe Xorg is not able to find the correct screen (?) when I'm running it as normal user?
    On the laptop there's a switch between "stamina" and "speed" to enable the discrete graphics card, I'm doing everything with the graphics disabled but the nvidia card seems to be recognized corretly anyway, maybe it's only a sw thing?
    Thank you in advance!
    p.s. I searched trough the forum and google but wasn't able to find a solution to my problem.

    I added the configuration file for the two graphic cards but startx for the normal user is still terribly slow to start and I'm not able to use gdm.
    I don't want to use both graphic cards or use nvidia optimus or something like that for now, I just want to access gnome and use X. I'm using the intel integrated graphics since it seems the other is not working (if I configure xorg to use it it's not able to run). From xorg.log it seems intel i915 module is able to recognize the card but for some reason gdm is still not working and whowing me only black screen with the clock instead of mouse cursor. To me it seems HD4000 is recognized but for some reason gdm is not working.
    The situation is: two graphic cards (intel HD4000 and nvidia) and one monitor (my laptop monitor). I'm using nouveau and intel. No Ati and no dual screen.
    Where can I find some logs in order to find the problem? daemons.log says there's a problem with dbus: no such file or directory but it seems dbus is up and running.

  • Problem with X11 apps, startx fails

    If I try to start X11 (via xterm or any X app for that matter) startx fails and gets stuck in this loop of trying to restart itself, from the looks of it. The output from startx on the console looks like this and just repeats forever:

    I suggest reinstalling X11. It's working here. This is the output I'm getting launching, getting an X11 window, and then quitting. I don't use it, but do check that it launches correctly. BTW, I suggest posting to the Unix forum under OS X Technologies, where X11 mavens congregate.

  • [Solved] nm-applet does not display in normal user's panel

    I installed Arch Linux yesterday. Today, I am trying to get some of the refinements working. I installed OpenBox as a standalone window manager. I got several things working exactly the way I wanted as root, such as networkmanager, nm-applet, and pypanel. When I startx as root, the nm-applet is properly displayed in the pypanel.
    Then I discovered that I could not run an X application as the normal user without first running "xhost +" as root. At this point, it dawned on me that I am not supposed to run startx as root, but as the normal user. Duh!
    So, I thought I set up everything the same way for the normal user. When I startx as the normal user, OpenBox runs, nm-applet runs, and pypanel runs, but pypanel does not display the nm-applet icon. I can now run my X application as the normal user, so that is good.
    My .config/openbox/autostart file is exactly the same for root and my normal user:
    (sleep 3 && pypanel) &
    (sleep 3 && /usr/bin/nm-applet --sm-disable) &
    nm-applet was started by this code, because ps -ef shows it running and owned by the normal user:
    [tim@(none) ~]$ ps -ef|grep nm-applet
    tim 2311 2306 0 15:27 tty1 00:00:00 /usr/bin/nm-applet --sm-disable
    tim 2332 2327 0 15:27 pts/0 00:00:00 grep nm-applet
    [tim@(none) ~]$ ps -ef|grep networkmanager
    root 497 476 0 14:14 ? 00:00:00 /sbin/dhcpcd -B -K -L -G -c /usr/lib/networkmanager/nm-dhcp-client.action eth0
    root 869 476 0 14:30 ? 00:00:00 /sbin/dhcpcd -B -K -L -G -c /usr/lib/networkmanager/nm-dhcp-client.action ra0
    tim 2345 2327 0 15:27 pts/0 00:00:00 grep networkmanager
    Why does pypanel display the nm-applet icon for root but not for the normal user?
    Tim (newbie to Arch but previously ran ArchBang for six months)

    I have now switched to tint2 from pypanel, anyway. It is much cleaner and easier to use. At least in my opinion.

  • 1 logged in user,shows 2

    After logging into KDE(Chakra kde i.e), am using gkrellm and also in "users" command output, it shows 2 users whereas in reality only 1 user i.e me and only one login has been performed as I directly start into KDE on boot so no tty->startx.
    Why 2 users? I remember on kubuntu atleast in prev. version(haven't seen in Karmic) I always saw 1 users.
    Is this a bug or there is some explanation?

    When you open up Konsole (or whatever terminal program you are using) it logs you in automatically for the terminal session. So you are logged in to KDE and also Konsole. As a test, open up more Konsoles and see how many users you have.

  • JBO error when terminate session

    Hi,
    I ran into the following error when I tried terminate session when user logs out. You help would be appreciated.
    Here is the code of the backing bean
    ExternalContext ectx = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getExternalContext();
    HttpSession session = (HttpSession)ectx.getSession(false);
    session.invalidate();
    return "success";

    Regards,

    bonnietang,
    Use the [ code ] and [ /code ] tags (without the spaces) to format your stack trace. That way, it is easier to follow (at least for me).
    I assume that this line of your code, is causing the error:
    session.invalidate();Correct?
    I see you are using OC4J 10.1.3. Then perhaps the OC4J or the Oracle Application Server - General may be more appropriate for your message. However, since you are also using ADF, then perhaps the JDeveloper and ADF is also appropriate.
    Good Luck,
    Avi.

  • How to terminate X smoothly???

    1. Is there a command to shutdown an X Server cleanly so that no error messages will be shown (like "X connection to :0.0 broken explicit kill or server shutdown" etc.). I'm starting x with startx as a normal user.
    2. Is there a way to autologin user in XDM???

    1. That's normal X behaviour, there isn't really another way to shut it down as far as I know. It's hopefully fixed in newer versions, but it's not really a problem, just ugly. I quit X with ctrl+alt+backspace.
    2. I'm pretty sure there's a way to autologin users with XDM, no idea how. GDM has it for sure anyway. (But why bothering to startup a login manager when you're going to autologin anyway?)

  • Gnome wont load as normal user.

    Pretty much what the title says. It runs fine as root but when i type startx as a normal user it just shows my wallpaper.  Anyone know a solution?
    Thanks

    You might look into the .xsession-errors file at your home directory and post the recent error messages in this thread. Maybe that helps for locating the problem.
