Startx: X server runs for split second, then dumps me back to shell

I'm trying to install an X server on a newly installed Arch Linux VirtualBox guest machine, but when I type "startx", the X server only runs for a split second, and then dumps me back to the shell. Here are my ~/.xinitrc and /var/log/Xorg.0.log files posted via wgetpaste. What could be wrong?

I'm not sure but i dont see any desktop or window manager in your .xinitrc .
.xinitrc is used to execute a window manager or a desktop when the x server starts.
So you need to install a desktop or window manager that you like.

  • PS4 turns on for split second then turns off (Not BLOD)

My PS4 was purchased via preorder on launch day here in South Africa - Friday 13th December. After working for 2 days,it now fails to turn on. I've read about the blue light of death that just pulsates continuously but what I'm getting is a beep and blue light for less than a second before it turns off completely with no light.
If I then press or hold the power button again, I get nothing. I have to unplug it from the wall and replug it in and then if I press the power button again, it does the same as before - beep and split second blue light before going dead. Here is a video I took of it:http://t.co/VIrDS9KI1G I can't get into safe mode. If I try to hold the power button down, it just does the same as above. It doesn't stay powered long enough to reach 7 seconds. I've also tried removing the HDD and booting without the HDD in to try and force safe mode but again, it does exactly the same as above. I've tried using different plug points and adapters that I know work and I've done so with no other devices plugged into these points or adapters. In my highly amateur opinion, it feels like a power supply issue where power is cutting practically immediately.

It's a power issue, I've noticed this because I was moving my PS4 from downstairs where I tested it, to my gaming room where it'll live FOREVER! lol... and the power was unplugged, but I touched the button as I lifted the console. It beeped as if it was going to come on, then because it had no power it just went off again. Just like you describe. So the console is acting like it does when it has SOME power, but not enough in my opinion.
Once I got it upstairs and plugged in the power, it came on and all was ok.
    I recommend:
Giving the PS4 ITS OWN PLUG SOCKET, don't plug it on a multi-adapter where it's power might be shared/weakened.
Give the PS4 a moment of being plugged in so it can store enough power to turn on.
Make sure your cables are all good,

  • Installed runs for 10 seconds then turns off continues doin it

i installed firefox 4 it runs for about 10 seconds then turns off i re apply the programe thing runs a short while then turns off i have re installed from different sites several times still no joy

Which PowerMac is experiencing the issue ? (It's a powermac forum)
    Which Mac OS ?
and which AirPort software version ? (use Get Info on AirPort Utility)
Which encryption method are you using on the Mac ? (it's been known to get it wrong)
ie. WEP 40-bit, WEP 128-bit, WPA, WPA2, WPA2 Personal (open Network Prefs, select AirPort and click Advanced).
Which encryption method are you using on the WiFi network ? Be exact.
There's a big difference between WPA, WPA2 and WPA2 Personal (and a few others).
Does the WiFi device have any filtering on it ? That could be anything from MAC address filtering to only using the wireless N protocol, which may xclude your wireless G (or wireless B) PowerMac.

  • Comp logs in for two seconds, then automatically logs back out.

Ok. This is a strange one for me, and I can't seem to find any information online about it, or anyone who has had a similar problem. I caused the problem by trying to get my router to work, consequentially force-rebooting my eMac about three times in a row immediately after start-up. The final time I rebooted, I came to the login screen, and logged into my administrator account as usual. The desktop loaded for two seconds, and I even had enough time to get nethack in the early stages of starting up, then it went blue, and returned me to the login screen.
Every time I try to log into my administrator account, it accepts my password just fine, loads my desktop background, items, and user settings, and then it just forces me immediately back to the login screen. I can log into my guest account just fine, use the internet, and do whatever over there, but it just wont let me into my administrator account. Or rather, it will, but only for (literally) one second. What happened? I didn't install anything recently, and the only thing I can think of that would of caused it would be all of the force re-booting (by just holding the power button down until it rebooted) that I did three startups in a row, maybe a minute after booting.

Force reboots can cause directory corruption.
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.

  • Opened mail flashes on for split second then disappears

Usually use AOL version 9.6 for mail. This problem only happens on Firefox, not with 9.6 Have looked for settings and unsuccessful in resolving problem. I must be doing something wrong! Not computer savvy enough to make use of your suggestions

I'm working with FCP 4.1. I tried trashing preferences and unfortunately it didn't help. I'm working on an older system (obviously) 10.3. Nothing has changed that I can think of. I attached a large hard drive and imported a file but that's the only thing I can think of that was "different" over the past year or so. I had a problem last year with Quicktime 7 and FCP 4.1 so I reintalled Quicktime 6.5 and that's what I'm using now. I'll double check to see if QT 7 didn't somehow reinstall. What a pain that was to remedy.

On late 2009 Mac Pro the iMessage says

  • X-Grid Works for one second then says it's finished

OK, so when I use the command line to submit an X-Grid job, it submits it, but it runs for one second then returns that it's finished. I look at the X-Grid Admin utility which is connected to my X-Serve, and it shows the job, shows that it's completed, and shows that it ran for one second... It doesn't matter what job I send to it...
    Here's the command I used:
    "xgrid -h rtsp.jnetcast.net -p <password hidden> -job submit catmovie /Use
    rs/chris/Public/xgrid/movie.mov /Users/chris/Public/xgrid/movie2.mov -mp4 -o /U
    sers/chris/Public/xgrid/movieout.mp4"
The path that all of those files are in has RW privileges for all users, so it's not that...
Anyone know how to get it to work?

Sorry, I don't have an answer - but there is an actual xgrid discussion board. You probably have a much better chance of finding an xgrid guru there than here.

  • I click Mail, it opens for 2 seconds, then closes down to main menu?!?!?

I have searched and can't find this answer.
I suspect it has something to do with my home computer and iphone together.
I click on MAIL it goes to MAIL for 2 seconds, then it shoots back to the MENU page of my iphone - can anyone tell me how to stop this?? This is my last resort!

    Hi,
Try forcing the Mail app to close and then launching it again. This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1445 will walk you through forcing an app to quit.
If the issue persists, try restarting the iPhone by holding the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears> then slide to turn off> and turn the iPhone back on by pressing the Sleep/Wake again.
If its still happening, you can try removing the email account from the iPhone and then adding it again or restoring the iPhone.

  • Iphone 6 stuck on Logo screen with flash of screen for a split second then back to logo screen :(

I purchase my Iphone 6 Roughly a month ago. Last night it died so I plugged it in and this morning it is stuck on the Apple logo screen and flashes to a red screen for a split second then back to the Applelogo screen. I have not done any updates since purchase. I have tried the power and home buttons together and simotaneously with no result PLEASE HELP!!!

    Hi ptina78,
As someone who uses and depends on my iPhone on a daily basis, I know I would be upset if my phone did not start up properly. Let's see if we can get you back up and running. If your iPhone is not completing its startup sequence and you continute to see the Apple logo on the display, you may need to reinstall the iOS operating system on the iPhone. This article tells how -
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or doesn't turn on - Apple Support
    Specifically -
If your device gets stuck during startup
When starting up, you might see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen for a long time, or your device might restart again. Try these steps:
Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
Put your device in recovery mode.
When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
