State Button behaving like Photoshop Smart Object?

I've created a State button which I have copied across three panels in a tabbed panel widget. I assigned a link (file download) to the first button before duplicating the button across the next two panels. When I change any one instance of the link, the other two change with it. Is this the expected behaviour?

Hi David,
This is not the expected behavior. I have created the state button and applied a link to it and then paste it to the other tabs and then change the links and it seems to be working fine. I will recommend that you try to recreate another button and see if the same thing happens with the other button too.

  • Video tutorial - Photoshop Smart Objects in poster design

    Hello Photoshop users!
I had a bit of time spare last night and thought i'd make a quick video overview for a recent poster design I did.
I created a quick 60's themed poster design for a battle of the bands event. The video is mainly about my workflow creating the warped and wavy text using Photoshop smart objects and Illustrator Vector smart objects.
It was a very time-saving technique, so wanted to share in-case anyone might not have been using smart objects much yet.
    Check it out here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsA7I4Y8tz8
    Hope someone finds it useful!
    Cheers!
PS: Here is a still image of the final poster Design:

Thanks for checking it out and for your comment! Had fun putting it together, next time I'll keep an eye on the length - this one went on for too long!

  • Photoshop smart objects

my smart objects pixelate with resizing. when imported as EPS's, AI, directly placed vectors from AI, my smart objects pixelate with resizing. Also, my smart objects do not render hi res when exported as a PDF however they look fine when in photoshop and designing. Im confused, this is the first time photoshop has ever done this for me.
Please note, my antialiasing button is ticked when objects are placed.
    Thank you!!!
    Alanna

The vector has no effects added they were designed as strokes, converted to outline, pathfinder merged etc.. i also tried pasting it in in actual size directly from illustrator, pasted in bigger then reduced down to size in photoshop, pasted it in as a hi res png, eps.. and it persisted to render like this... although it did not do this when i exported it as a JPG- it rendered find
The ai document raster settings in AI are as follows for your reference but no effect was applied.
    model: RGB
    resolution: High 300ppi
    bg: transparent
    Thanks

  • Opening a Photoshop smart object file in Illustrator looks horrible (antialiasing problem)

    Hello all,
This problem is killing me and I really wish I had done this logo in Illustrator, but I didn't now I have to suffer. Help!
I am doing a freeland job for a friend so I am not all that and a bag of chips with Illustrator. I am better at Photoshop but I need the vector, so I did my logo in photoshop and created a smart object out of it. I saved a version as a tiff and one as a jpg. My friend is creating his own leaflet in Word and the logo works beautifully there. I am creating a flyer for him in Illustrator and the logo is aliased in Photoshop but when I put it in Illustrator it looks antialiased and bad. He also has a little cheapy yahoo sitebuilder website until I create a website for him and the same logo(jpg) will not open in the yahoo site for him. I work and go to school so I don't have the time to recreated the logo in illustrator. It looks really good the way it is until I put it in Illustrator. Any ideas? please?
Thanks to anyone that answers this question, and kudos for taking time out of your busy day to calm my angst( or add to it)please don't add to it...

    Hello Noel and c,
I created the logo in photoshop
( to make vector in photoshop, I need the scalability, I made the logo a smart object)
I then saved a copy as a jpg(for web) and a tif for print. I am creating a flyer in Illustrator, so I have to bring the logo into illustrator, when I do it looks like an aliasing problem. I had that aliasing problem in photoshop, but I still had text.... so I could antialias the text. In Illustrator the logo is just a tif, or jpg(I have tried both) It is not a text, but an image and it looks antialiased. In some programs the logo looks good, in some programs the logo looks bad.  The only layer I have in the good photoshop file that I saved  as a jpg, and as a tif is one layer that has text and the logo on it- this is a smart object. I have additional work files that have multiple layers, but I do not want multiple layers on my final print, web file. When I open up my laptop, I will save a screenshot.
    Thanks so much

  • Photoshop smart object layer will not open in ACR when I double click

I have a raw file opened up in photoshop, duplicated it, made them smart objects, when I click the smart object icon on the file, i get another copy of the file in photoshop, the file doesn't open up in acr, is there a setting i'm missing?
    Message was edited by: Rodwf

If you dupe that smart object layer you still have one smart object change one the other also changes.  If you want two smart object for the save image so you cab have two versions of raw conversions you need to use menu Layers>smart Object>New smart object via copy..

  • Can We Paste Photoshop Smart Objects Into Illustrator (as Linked/Embedded)?

Since raster editing is much more limited in Illustrator, is there a way to link or embed an individual Smart Object from Photoshop into Illustrator? I know there is an option to Place a file into Illustrator. But what if I have a larger Photoshop document with many Smart Objects in it, and just want to copy and paste one of those into Illustrator, but also have it update when I update it in Photoshop. Is this possible?

Copy and Paste won't have a link to the original file. Only Place can have that.

  • Photoshop, smart objects and dynamic filters performance issues

    Hello,
I am quite new to Photoshop, after several years with Capture NX 2 to process thousands of NEF and  RW2 files (RAW from Nikon and Panasonic).
I use Photoshop to read RAW pictures, convert them to a smart object, then apply several dynamic filters, mainly from the Nik Collection (Dfine, Color Efex Pro, Sharperner Pro), sometimes Topaz Denoise. I do that with actions, so I can batch process many pictures.
But sometimes I have to manually adjust some settings, and this where I do not really understand the way Photoshop works. If I have to adjust let say the last filter on the stack, Photoshop reprocesses all the filters below, which can be very tedious as this takes lot of time.
Is there a way to tell Photoshop to keep all intermediate data in memory, so if you have to adjust one of the last filters the process starts immediately?
Any help would be greatly appreciate.
    Frederic.

    Thank you Chris.
I am surprised, as for years there has been a lot of discussions about Capture NX2 which was supposed to be slow. In fact, when using the same filters (+ Nik Color Efex), NX2 is much much faster than Photoshop, and when you have to make an adjustment in any of the setttings, you can do that immediateley.
Of course, Photoshop is completely opened and NX2 totally closed (and now not supported anymore).
But, I really don't know how to adapt my workflow, except buying the most powerful PC possible (I already have 2 which are quite powerful), and this will still be far from being comfortable. I am used to tune manually many many pictures (adjust noise reduction, sharpening, light, colors ...), and this was quite fast with NX2.
I am probably not on the correct forum for this, and I will try to investigate elsewhere.
Anyhow, thank you for your answer.

  • Photoshop Smart Object

I've been studying photoshop and as I walk through one tutorial, it starts with Select "Convert to Smart Object".  I have PSE8 and an iMac.  I can't seem to find that function.  Doing a Goggle search, I'm thinking that Smart Objects are for the CS Version and NOT PSE(8).  Is this right ... or .. am I missing something.

Barbara ... I was just following a number of examples provided in a Digital Wedding Photography book.  The example was on the simple "shadows and highlights". I know how to do that by going to Enhance > Adjust Lighting > Shadows/Highlights.  But when the Step 1 stated Select6 "Convert to Smart Object", it just threw me.  Now I know why I didn't connect with it.
    Thanks for your help

  • Exporting like a Smart Object

    Hello everyone !
Often after making vectro pictures in illustrator i use exporting to Photoshop like a SO. But i can't realise, why after exporting some elements like a blur or transparent mask is losing?
    Thanks for responce!

Perhaps you should also ask in the AI forum http://forums.adobe.com/community/illustrator/illustrator_general
Can you double click on the Layer's Smat Object  icon in the layers palette to see if embedded object open in Illistrator or Photoshop to see what layers are in there.

  • Photoshop CS4 smart object template just overwrote a raw file - HELP

So.  I've been working in Photoshop extensively for about 6 years now and I am well aware that nothing we do in Photoshop or Lightroom is supposed to overwrite a raw file.  I'm not talking about changing it to something a little lighter or darker, I'm talking about replacing a picture of one baseball player with another one - and the original? Gone.
Here's what happened: I have a poster template that contains several layers, 7 of which are smart objects.  I change the pictures in the template by right-clicking the smart object layer and selecting "replace smart object," browsing to the new image, selecting, and here is what SHOULD happen: the target picture opens in Adobe camera raw, I make some small edits, click done or okay or something similar, and that new image has replaced the old one in the template.  What DID happen was this: I followed the procedure above and selected my target raw file, the picture that was already in the template (the one I was trying to replace with my target file) opened in Adobe camera raw.  I thought - Hey, that's wierd!  Closed the ACR dialog and tried again.  Same thing happened.  I opened lightroom and saw - to my HORROR - that the target file had been changed to the same image that was in the template.
If it clarifies: pictures of player A (who played in 2009) is in all of the smart object layers in my template.  I want to make that poster be of player B (who played in 2012) so I begin replacing all the smart objects.  When I get to the 3rd image in the poster template, Photoshop overwrites my raw file of player B with the smart object photo of Player A.  There were no photos of player A on the network drive that the picture of Player B was on.  But there's one now.  My raw file shows that it was modified about 10 minutes ago.
We tried undoing in Photoshop.  That did nothing.  We tried deleting the xmp file.  That did nothing.  We removed it from the lightroom catalog and reimported it.  It is now a picture of Player A from 2009 and my picture of Player B from 2012 is just gone.
Anybody have any idea what this could be and how we could avoid it in the future?
    Best,
    Jamey

    mojoimagery wrote:
Now - JJ - when you say "overlay files" - what do you mean?  Because that feels like a good description for what happened.
We performed no save operation at any point during the sequence of events that ended with the image in one raw file being replaced by the image in the smart object.
As I wrote Smart Object layers embedded object is a copy of the original  and if you replace it you replace it with a copy of some other object. Embedded object are copies and independent from the original.  If after creating a smart Object layer who's embedded object is a copy of a raw file and its conversion settings. You change the original RAW files RAW conversion settings the smart object layer raw conversion setting are not changes for its a copy with independent raw conversion settings. When you replace a smart object layers contents you will replace the embedded object and you should replace it with an object the has the same pixel size and orientation. Because there is an associated transform for the object in the layer that is not replaced. The replacement is also a copy.  If the original smart object was created using  File Open where you choose a RAW file  ACR would open with the RAW files current conversion settings.  In ACR you can changes the setting then hold down the shift key to change the open image button to an Open Object button.  Using that button ACR will open a smart object layer in Photoshop the contents of the embedded object is a copy of the RAW file and the current ACR settings.  No File is written Photoshop is not a File Editor its a Document editor that has many data structures for different layer types.  When you replace the contents of a smart object you will be put into a "Place" file selection dialog if you choose a raw file it should have the same orientation as the image being replaced because of the associated transform. When you choose a RAW file ACR will open and you can change the conversion settings however there will be no Open Image button instead there will be an OK button.  There is also a save image button and you can save a RAW file that is a DNG file not a CR2 file. Like the DNG converter. If you click the OK button the embedded object in the smart object layer will be replaced with a copy of the selected RAW file and the current ACR settings. Again there is no file written Photoshop is not a File editor just the embedded smart object data is replaced in Photoshop smart object layer's data structure.
I do not think the use of smart objects in you process caused what you are experiencing and because it only happens once an a while I feel its more likely caused by some human error made during the processing in those cases. I would look elsewhere for what causing the overlay. In the place file selection dialog it is possible to rename files perhaps even by accident. Programs like LR and Bridge can rename and copy files perhaps overlay other files.

  • Photoshop bug: Smart Objects overwriting other Smart Objects when edited and saved in Illustrator

Experiencing issues when working with a large number (over 200) vector smart objects brought into Photoshop CS4 from Illustrator.
Things seemed to be going along nicely; if I needed to edit a Smart Object, I could double-click it, it would open in Illustrator and then I could edit and save it.  Return to Photoshop and the Smart Object is updated.  Swell and dandy.  The issue started happen when I hit a large quantity of either vector smart objects (remember, over 200) or the many layers and groups within Photoshop (must be over 500).  When I would double-click, open, edit, and save the vector Smart Object, the Photoshop Smart Object I was working on would update AND another/several other Smart Objects would update as well.  Which, of course, would ruin the artwork, as suddenly I was seeing several instances of the same object.  If it hadn't have been for ForeverSave, I many not have recovered the work.
It's rather hard to isolate the issue to see what's causing the problem.  Here are some of the possible causes:
    Running Snow Leopard on Mac
Many, many Smart Objects in file, perhaps enough to ruin the naming convention and cause bugs when Photoshop referenced the temp file
Many, many Photoshop layers and groups
Illustrator vector files copy+pasted from several different files (affects the naming convention perhaps?)
Some groups/layers in Photoshop are duplicates
To help make it a little clearer, you should know:
Running the most updated software / OS (that is until CS5 comes out)
Smart Objects showed no error until I had actually opened, edited, and saved the referenced temp file (i.e. VectorSmartObject1.ai)
Files saved and worked on from Dropbox (network folder)
Not looking for much of an answer to this question; I just wanted to see if anyone else had come across this bug.  Also, Adobe PLEASE look into this as you begin testing for the next update.  I have the file(s) if you need to replicate the issue.  My best guess is that the naming convention of Vector Smart Objects has an odd character limit so when Vector Smart Object 200.ai is saved, Vector Smart Object 2.ai gets overwritten.

Have you tested this with Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator CS5? (the current versions, that came out last month)
If you duplicated a smart object layer, both layers refer back to the same file content. So when you change the file, both layers would be updated.  That is intentional and explained in your manual.  If you didn't realize this, that could explain what you are seeing.
If you placed separate files, then they should not be updated at the same time, because they will refer to separate files.
Yes, Smart Objects only update when you save the file.
You would need over 4 billion smart objects in one document to get Photoshop confused about which one refers to which file.  And since the layer limit is much less than 4 billion, I doubt that is the cause.
There is no naming convention involved. We don't limit the filenames (except to platform standards and to include a file type extension).

  • DISGUSTED! ImageReady functionality lost for producing smart objects in GoLive!

It is ABSURD that the rollover/layer-based slice capabilities feature of ImageReady was eliminated and instead replaced by way of mediocrity using manual copy and paste functionality within Dreamweaver. What kind of step-backward mentality is this? I am beyond disappointed and feel betrayed by Adobe, not to mention unbelievably, inconsiderately inconvenienced. Does the title "industry standard" require bowing to irrational development or is this mere laziness on Adobe's part?
Previously I had been able to develop multiple series of rollovers within Photoshop using layers and then switch to ImageReady in order to automatically produce rollover code for a set of images...AS ONE IMAGE FILE. These images could then be placed into GoLive (another hot-button issue!) as SMART OBJECTS - gee, what a concept! - where the targets, if necessary and not already entered within ImageReady, could be linked to any page within the the site folders. Now I can't access the secondary image anywhere at all. It appears that the only solution for us lowly GoLive CS2 users is now to be required to TRIPLE THE AMOUNT OF WORK AND place multiple objects within a page layout, leaving (no pun intended) room for pixel space errors and requiring multiple manual page adjustments when the work was ALREADY DONE IN PHOTOSHOP! Layer-based slices are a work of genius, but NOT without the added capability of automatic rollover detection. How am I supposed to work this out in GoLive?
NOW, only NOW am I discovering that this "merged capability" within Photoshop is missing one of THE MOST INGENIOUS FEATURES EVER and now I am scrambling to find some garbage workaround in order to capacitate the need for a string of visual interface objects. This is the kind of move I EXPECT from Microsoft, but NEVER have I been this put out with Adobe. NEVER.
Is this the only solution? Bend to the will of the Dreamweaver cabal and join the ranks of the Microsuck copy-and-paste zombies? Not only is the new CS3 series "upgrade" cost-prohibitive for most anyone that isn't within the realm of the design elite or corporate ladder-climbing ranks of internal design group budgets, the tools appear to force anyone without the time necessary to learn the intricacies of manual HTML tagging to create nothing but the same garbage website in an infinite spectrum of ineptitude.
Is the new GoLive 9 supposed to accommodate this ridiculous shot-in-the-foot move or am I REALLY going to have to resort to a complete reload of CS2?

Dave and Buko, that's my entire point...I shouldn't have to be using CS2 after purchasing CS3. I have full versions for both thankfully and for this very reason but I don't know if I can install CS2 in addition to CS3 without causing some system file issues. I did briefly read about someone else trying that in another forum.
IR does indeed work great with GoLive CS2. My issue is that the rollovers in the extended Photoshop CS3 do NOT work and don't export code at all. It's damn frustrating that after making the purchase, I feel duped.
And Buko, no, I never even bothered with Dreamweaver. I attempted to learn it several times and was just put off completely. I previously owned both Macrodmedia Studio Professional and the complete Adobe CS2, but the upgrades for the combined product sets which made sense for me and didn't break the bank like purchasing the "Master Suite" didn't even include things like Fireworks, which supposedly has some sort of workaround for rollovers when setting multiple targets in an image file.

  • How can we make smart objects smarter?

Smart objects are great and can be a really useful time saver. That said, i'm having a problem and I'm hoping that there is a solution out there. I'll preface this with the statement that, I may not be using smart objects as they were intended, but I feel like this is how they should work:
A basic example - say you have a "Login" button.
It would be great/obvious to have that as a smart object. It would be greater still to have the on, off, rollover, clicked states to be within that smart object.
Now, if you place that smart object as a linked object into a document, there is no way to say "in this instance, I want to show the off state of the button". If you open the smart object and change the state to that and save - then it will update all instances everywhere in all PSDs where it exists and all of your buttons are now in an off state.
Now, clearly, in this example, the easy answer is just make 4 smart objects. Easy peasy.
The problem with that is two fold:
    1. if "Login" changes to "Logon" I need to make that change in 4 places instead of just one.
    2. The button example is simple, but what if my smart object is more complicated than that? What if there a complex set of layers that make up that object? Making changes to multiple complex layer files kind of defeats the purpose of having smart objects no?
You can embed the object and thus break the external link and change things to your heart's content without effecting other instances - but then what really is the value of creating the smart object then? You might as well just have a layer group that you drag from PSD to PSD.
The way smart objects should work, IMHO, is that you should be able to toggle layers on and off per instance of the object, BUT any pixel modifications to a layer within, bubble up to all instances that are displaying that layer  (say - a colour change, or text change, etc).
    Thoughts?

  • Any way to get Illustrator CS5 to display full screen mode like Photoshop?

Is there any way to get Illustrator's screen modes to behave like Photoshop's screen modes?
One of the things I like most about Photoshop is the way it toggles from standard screen mode to "full screen with menu bar" to just "full screen".
For example, in Photoshop's standard mode, the window is no bigger than the size of the canvas. Why can't Illustrator do that?
And, is there anyway to get Illustrator CS5 to display the full screen mode where the background outside the artboard or canvas is black instead of white. Working in Illustrator for long hours, it would much easier on my eyes if the surrounding background could be black like in Photoshop.
Thanks very much in advance for any help,
    - Nick

At the bottom of the Tool bar is a toggle button (F) which will change the Screen Mode.

  • Duplicating smart objects across documents

Hello, what I'm trying to do is keep smart objects linked when duplicating them over to a different document. The thing is, I don't have a problem with the links breaking when I duplicate them from one doc to another on my laptop (a PC) and my friend can also do it on his laptop (a mac). But on my work computer, when I try to duplicate a group with several smart objects inside it, the links break and I am no longer able to update the objects in the doc that I duplicated them into. Does that make sense?? I use Photoshop CC on both my work and home computer, and my friend used Photoshop cs4, but I'm thinking maybe my computer at home isn't the lastest update of CC.. my work computer is, and that is where I am having the issue of broken links. Could this just be a bug in the latest version? Any other thoughts on how I could fix this?
    Thanks!

Could this just be a bug in the latest version?
Ah, how easily some people bandy about the word »bug« … but you simply may be right. (edited)
I can reproduce the issue on 14.2.1 – a group of instances of a Smart Object duplicated to a different file behaves as individual Smart Objects (and the file size seems to reflect that).
    Maybe you can search
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/
for existing bug reports on this or, if none exist and someone else can confirm the issue, create one.
