State of DNS after Domain rename

Hi all
Still learning DNS and want to add secondary DC
I initially set this up as a mydomain.local as I believed that was best practice. When researching SSL certificates I realised that it was now supposedly best practice to use mydomain.com. I did a Domain rename which was interesting and seemed to work reasonably
well.
2012 AD DC is :
IPv4: 192.168.1.105
Computer name: name
Full Computer name: name.mydomain.local
Domain name is: mydomain.com
2012 Server RDS is: (was secondary DNS when .local)
IPv4: 192.168.1.100
Computer name: remote
Computer name: remote.mydomain.com
Domain name is: mydomain.com
I want to install Secondary DNS to the RDS server or maybe a VM on it for redundancy but am concerned my DNS is possibly a little bit dodgy.
Only issues I have is sometimes from remote “mydomain.com” will resolve to 192.168.1.100 and don’t believe this should happen but may be wrong.
Every now and again from Remote Desktop which is on 192.168.1.100 (remote.mydomain.com) web sites won’t load and you need to refresh which will normally then resolve and load.
The only other issue is every now and again autodiscover will take a while to resolve and troubleshooting that implies a timeout. MS have looked at this and didn’t see any issues in my DNS however I think that was just due to the fact that it resolved eventually.
I have include some info ipconfig on 192.168.1.100 shows DNS 192.168.1.105.

            Event String:
The DFS Replication service stopped replication on volume C:. This occurs when a DFSR JET database is not shut down cleanly and Auto Recovery is disabled. To resolve this issue, back up the
files in the affected replicated folders, and then use the ResumeReplication WMI method to resume replication.

            Recovery Steps
            1. Back up the files in all replicated folders on the volume. Failure to do so may result in data loss due to unexpected conflict resolution during the recovery of the replicated folders.
            2. To resume the replication for this volume, use the WMI method ResumeReplication of the DfsrVolumeConfig class. For example, from an elevated command prompt, type the following command:
wmic /namespace:\\root\microsoftdfs path dfsrVolumeConfig where volumeGuid="A3ABE3A7-A0E5-11E2-93E8-806E6F6E6963" call ResumeReplication

Hi,
If I understand correctly, you have two computers with the following host names and IP addresses:
1. name (192.168.1.100)
2. remote (192.168.1.105)
The first server is a domain controller. The second server is a domain member server.
Your Active Directory domain was 'mydomain.local' and you changed this to 'mydomain.com'
DNS is installed on server #1.
To avoid confusion when talking about DNS and Active Directory, you can refer to mydomain.com as your Active Directory domain, which has users and groups in it and is hosted on a domain controller. You also have a DNS forward lookup zone mydomain.com that
is used to dynamically register computers that are members of the Active Directory domain. So - when referring to Active Directory - it is a domain but when referring to DNS it is a zone. These are two separate things that are linked.
The DNS zone should have at least three A (address) records:
mydomain.com (the root of the zone)
name.mydomain.com (the DC)
remote.mydomain.com (the member server)
You should see the .100 address for the first two and the .105 address for the third. Open up DNS Manager and view the zone to check it.
The pings you have listed in your post don't all make sense. Two of them are pinging the same FQDN but give different IP addresses (below):
What problem are you trying to solve?

  • RDS licence trouble after domain rename

    Hi all,
i did a domain rename in a windows server 2012 R2 environment. Change was successful so far with one exception. I have one server with RDS installed. Sessionhost, licence server, broker and web-access on the same server. But now the connection between session
host and licence server is broken. starting licence diagnosis i can see that the session host is asking for the old fqdn of the licence server. old fqdn is ts01.domain.de but he should point to ts01.domain.intern now.
I already removed the licence server role and reinstalled it, but no success.
Any suggestions, where i can change this name?
    Kind regards,
    Tobias.

    Hi Tobias,
If you need to change the name of a server that is part of a RDS deployment then you need to first remove the server from the deployment.  In the case of RD Connection Broker server that means you need to delete the entire RDS deployment (remove RDCB
Role Service), do the rename, then install the deployment from scratch.
If you are sure the only problem you have is with RD Licensing, you can try editing the deployment properties -- RD Licensing tab, remove the existing licensing server name, and then add the new licensing server name.  I suspect that licensing
is not the only problem you have with your RDS deployment.
I recommend writing down any settings/list of published applications/etc., removing the RDSH from the collection, remove RDWeb Role Service, remove RDCB Role Service, restarting as needed, then finally creating a new RDS deployment using server manager --
add roles and features -- RDS install -- etc.  After the new RDS deployment is up and running make sure that RD Licensing is configured in deployment properties and verify other settings/published apps as needed.  You should not need to uninstall
    RDSH/RDL or uninstall your applications.

  • Follow up - DNS (internal domain has same name as external website)

    Hi,
I am following up with on previous blog entry about resolving an domain internal name to an external website found here:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/4d97325b-ff3a-4f46-ba6e-dc3f4ff978e1/dns-internal-domain-has-same-name-as-external-website
    On October 30, 2014
HayashiTech provided a response suggesting the use of netsh interface portproxy on the DC's to resolve this issue. There has been no feedback to this suggestion and I am very curious what opinions are out there for this suggestion as it appears to be the
    best option provided yet.
Thank you in advance as well for all the great guidance I have found provided by Ace and his followers.

Interesting question. I've not seen that solution before, but having done a test on my lab setup it certainly seems to work as expected. Eg, using :
    netsh interface portproxy add v4tov4 listenport=80 listenaddress=dc1.abc.com connectport=80 connectaddress=www.abc.com
on my DC where I've setup a working external domain name with the www record pointing to the website, and the non-www record pointing to the DC, requests to the non-www address are successfully being redirected to the www address (after confirming it didn't
happen prior to adding the portproxy).
So on the face of it that does look like a workable solution. I haven't used it myself in anger obviously, but the two downsides I can think of immediately to this solution are :
    1) This operates as a proxy, so unlike the IIS method that Ace mentioned where it would tell the client to go to the www address instead (so the client connects direct), this method keeps your DC acting as a middle man, eg all communications to that address
go through your DC rather than direct from the client to the website. Depending on what they're doing on the website this may or may not be an issue for you.
    2) Since the client is continuing to connect to the DC throughout, if you ever did need the have something on the DC responding to port 80 then you could have issues. That said, according to
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731068(v=ws.10).aspx the portproxy listenaddress can be a FQDN rather than IP, so that could mitigate any issues there.

Where is the latest version of the Domain Rename Tool?
    Is this one?

    Hello,
domain rename is NOT supported when using Exchange 2007 or higher. And NetBIOS rename is NOT supported on ANY Exchange version.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738208(WS.10).aspx
"It is imperative that you not attempt a domain rename operation until you read and understand the contents of this technical reference. The domain rename operation is not supported in Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 or Exchange Server 2010.
DNS domain rename is supported in Exchange Server 2003. However, renaming of the NetBIOS domain name is not supported in any version of Exchange Server."
There are maybe also other applications/services that do not support this.

  • FILEIO message sequence counter reset after domain restart

    Hi,
I have configured FileIO to pick message from RIB-RMS topic and create xml message. It is working fine.
These xml message are pick by external system based on their sequence number in file name itself. like File name 'Items_ItemCre_100069945.775' having message number 775.
After Domain bounce, counter is reset to 0, causing the duplicate message error as message is identified by its sequence number.
Please let me know how can we avoid resetting the message counter?
    Thanks & Reagrds,
    Vinay

    Hi,
Are the results from a same computer? (Run manually and ran that as required)
Please make sure the instance of 'Win32_EncryptableVolume' exists on that drive.

Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
I'll hit a few of your questions - others will have to do others since I'm not up on some of the issues you ask about
    4) is there an easy way to review/delete items (in 6, i run a basic slideshow and delete on the fly -- is this still workable in 7?)?
    Yes
    5) Are there significant functionality benefits of 7 over 6 (e.g., does the noise function or shadow/highlight really offer significant benefits? The Events seems obvious, but I'm more interested in "under the hood" experience
    Yes
Loseless editing - web galleries - events
    a) Is import any faster? As my library is growing in size, the import is getting overly slow
It is fine for me (only you can compare to your current) - I have 20542 items using 26.3 GB in 271 events
    7) Is there a full-screen edit mode?
    yes
    8) Can you configure events so that it's not just by day?
    yes
    9) Is 6's "roll" structure as mirrored in the file system still available in the Events approach, or is the database structure that once you've converted a library, there's no going back?
Events replace rolls (if your rolls are named - NOT the default rollxxx name - they will come across as is - to me events are rolls with much more capability and a new name - some people are VERY putoff by the change (but most love it) for reasons that I simply do not comprehend
    10) What is the effective (or advised) maximum library size? I've probably got over 60GB of images in my libraries now, with 20,000 images or so. If 7 can readily digest them (and preserve all my albums, etc.), then I'd love to combine them into one, unless that will kill performance, make the database unstable, drive backups into interminable waits, etc.
The advertised max is 250,000 photos - I have about the same number of photos as you in about 1/3 the space - there are a few users here with libararies your size. With iPhoto Library Manager it is easy to maintain multiple libraries if you choose

  • Bridge removing file extension after batch rename

    Hi All,
I've been having trouble with what appears to be a problem with Bridge in Photoshop CS2. I'm well aware this is an older version but, in this case, I don't think that should matter. Here is my situation:
After batch renaming jpeg files, I've had a problem with Bridge simply stripping off the file extension on all the newly renamed files. This never happens right away...always later. In other words, I'll batch rename a folder full of photos without issue, note that the rename was successful, and then return to that same folder a short time later to find white thumbnails and missing file extensions. This has happened exactly the same way on two different computers - and always with the delay.
This is getting to be very annoying. Has anyone had or heard of a similar issue? Thanks very much...

First use the menu tools / cache / purge cache for folder, if still in trouble restart Bridge holding down option key to refresh preferences

  • Windows 8.1 modern shortcut icons are not displayed in taskbar after domain join

    Hello,
Like the title says: modern (metro) shortcut icons in taskbar are not displayed after domain join. There's just blank space where the icon should be for Store, OneDrive etc. Shortcuts work for classic and 3rd part applications.
Shortcut icons work properly if I log in with local account. The applications work properly whether the icons are displayed or not for every user (local and domain).

    Hi,
Since this issue only happened for domain account, I suggest you check whether there're some GPOs\logon scripts applied to the domain accounts which controls the taskbar icons.
Have you tried to unpin the modern taskbar icons and re-pin the icons to the taskbar? What is the result?
