Static/crackling freezes/shuts down Toshiba L300 (already cleaned fan/heat sink)

Was slightly intermittent but pretty much unable to use the computer at this point. The only clues I can give is that there seemed to be 2 errors about usb so wondering if that could cause the static build up that freezes the computer? One was on shut down and the other was after static started and it seemed to be trying to grab a driver (for usb I think) almost as though the device disappeared but then the laptop froze. It wasn't too long ago one of three ports wasn't working but they all work recently (don't recall which one quit for a bit).
Unfortunately I need to fix it myself due to finances. How do I physically disconnect all the usb ports to rule them out? I probably did this when I took out the motherboard to clean the fan/heat sink but I don't know for sure which connection(s) they were.
If I'm way off please provide other suggestions. I REALLY appreciate any help given.

first off, please provide the entire model number of your computer.  It is printed on the bottom.  do not provide s/n.
Do you have a backup of all your personal data?  If not, I would say that should be your priority at this point.
After that has been dealt with, the next question is "did you make restore disks when computer was still working?"
Can you get into recovery menu (spamming f8 on start up).  If so, try going into safe mode and restoring the computer to a restore point at a point in time before the problems started.
When you cleaned fan/heat sink, did you reseat the heatsink.  If not, you may want to open it back up and reseat the heatsink (i.e., remove old thermal paste and reapply).

  • MBP freezes, shuts down, restarts, repeats after log in

Late 2007 MBP recently upgraded to Yosemite started freezing, shutting down by itself, and then restarting by itself.  I log in, and within anywhere from 10 seconds to 3 minutes after my screen fully loaded, repeats this.  120 gig hard drive is way full.  So pretty sure that is part of problem.  Has been sluggish for weeks.  Have about 18 gigs free.  Attempting to move things off but it won't stay on long enough to do this.
This morning I managed to access Disk Utilities for repair upon start up, but I was trying different keystrokes to do this. (Posed question for proper keys to do this in another post, but feel free to answer here.)  It performed disk repair and showed all the steps it took.  Two items appeared in red:
Incorrect number of file hard links
Orphaned file inode (id = 35716717)
    Then in green:
The Volume MacIntosh HD was repaired successfully.
A couple of lines farther down appeared:
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
By this time the timer status showing the repair taking place was gone and I didn't do anything for about ten minutes.  Then I restarted, but the problem has continued. While doing this I was offline.

I forgot to add that right after the note that the HD was repaired successfully appeared:
File system check exit code is 0.

  • Mac G4 Freezes/Shuts Down on Its Own

I have a Powermac G4 that when using, it appears to "freeze". The mouse and keyboard become non functional, and the display looks like it is frozen.
BUT The power light appears to be off, giving the impression that the computer has intermittently shut down.
Sometimes it takes a few attempts at pressing the power button to get it to turn back on. Other times, I've pulled the plug and plugged it back in and it would boot up the first time I press the power button.
Every time I boot it back up, the system clock resets itself and I need to put in the time and date again.
I would guess it is the battery or power supply.. are there any suggestions?

    Welcome!
Nearly all Macs have a thermal sensing system that tracks CPU core temps and will shut down the computer if it gets too hot. You can get utilities to monitor the temps, like this:
    http://download.cnet.com/Temperature-Monitor/3000-2094_4-41089.html
or, since you are in Tiger, this Dashboard widget:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
I'm not sure what the critical temp is for an G4. My MDD 1.25ghz single processor has never posted a temp (via Temperature Monitor) greater than 117F/47C but dual-processor machine can run hotter. I thing the 140GF range is getting close to the danger zone.
If temps are running high, there is a physical action and a software action to consider.
The physical action is to make sue that air intakes and exhausts are not blocked. This mean keeping desk clutter away from the front panel and leaving at least six inches between the back panel and any obstruction. Also open the side door and see if there is a convention of dust bunnies clogging the air paths and fans. A good mucking out with a non-static brush can peel several degrees off the temps. I use a kitchen pastry brush with natural bristles and a wooden handle.
The software item is to see if you have a "runaway background process" demanding too much of the processor. The steps:
    1) Quite any user applications so the computer is as normal idle.
    2) Find and launch Activity Monitor (in Applications > Utilities.
    3) If you've not done so before, set AM's "Show" setting (top part of its window) from "My Processes" to "All Processes."
    4) Clip on the header item in the table that reads,"%CPU" to sort the processes by their CPU demands.
    5) Let AM run for a minute or so. No process should be taking more than about 5% of the CPU if you've quit all other user apps before starting.
If this shows one or two processes hogging the CPU, post their names and we can guide you through taming or evicting them.

  • IMac crackling and shutting down intermittently

Can anybody help? Please be patient. :-/
I've seen a few similar issues but not exactly the same and none recent. Apologies if there's a similar recent thread that I haven't seen.
    I have a mid 2010 21.5inch iMac 3.06Ghz i3 with 12 GB RAM (upgraded from 4 about a year ago). ATI Radeon HD 4670 265MB.
A few weeks ago the iMac just started powering off for no reason. At first I thought it was a high temperature (it does get hot when using phot/video apps) issue but it isn't always the case. When checking connections I could hear a faint crackling coming from the top left hand side at the back (as viewed from the front) even when the Mac had shut down (power lead still in). Once I'd heard this I realised it preceded and followed every power off occurrence.
I've done a hardware check (detailed) and no faults are reported. I've done SMC and PRAM resets. All with no improvement.
The only other strange things that have been happening recently are that I've had a few software crashes/freezes usually relating to heavy graphics use/heat (I suspected conflicts with things like MS Office for Mac, Crashplan, Dropbox etc so disabled them all and haven't had as many software crashes (still some) but the powering off is still happening. I did wonder if the retrofit RAM was working ok (the speed improvement was huge initially but since Yosemite it seems much slower) but thought the hardware test would spot anything wrong? It doesn't show anything. When the machine starts up it is very slow to show jpeg thumbnails on the desktop etc. This may all be a red herring to the power down fault though?
I appreciate that's a lot of information and the main issue I'm trying to resolve is the powering off.
A local PC repair shop had a look and said it was a PSU component which they repaired for £100 but we've had it back 3 days and it's happened again three times so far. It will be going back but I'd like to hear if there are any suggestions on what to consider?
    Many thanks in advance.....

I'd take it to an Apple store/Genius Bar or authorized repair place for a diagnosis - what type of "PC" repair shop was it that you took it to?
It does sound like an electrical/power management issue which could ultimately mean the logic board, but hardware issues are very difficult to guess long distance, hence my recommendation to take it to an Apple store or AASP.

  • P55-GD65 Problem Freezes / Shuts Down unexpextedly

    Hi all,
I've recently received a replacement P55-GD65 part for my pc upgrade. The first mobo was broken but I'm not sure wether the current one is any better.
I have a freezing problem with my set up. After I power up it goes to post and lauches windows. However, within 5 to 10 minutes the system just shuts down on its own. Sometimes this happens already in BIOS when I've been looking around for a solution for some time.
After power down pressing the power button doesn't help. I have to disconnect power cord from PSU and wait a bit before reconnecting for the power button to work again.
I've been reading other posts and people have the similar problems, but none of the solutions have resolved my problem.
I've tried putting OC genie on - no solution.
I've tried using only 1 memory - no solution. and yes I've taken the memories out and reincerted them.
I've tried setting BIOS to optimized defaults - no solution.
I've tried setting memory speed down from Geil automatic 1333MHz to 1060MHz - no solution.
I've tried setting memory voltage up from Geil automatic 1,5V to 1,6V - no solution.
I've tried taking CPU out and replaced it in the socket - no solution.
I've updated Intel drivers from MSI website.
I've updated other drivers from the CD that came with the mobo.
    BIOS version is 1.3
There has been a lot of discussion about corsair memory modules but none about the GEIL ones I have. Has anyone experience with the memory I have? According to MSI website P55-GD65 is tested with a dual setup of 2g Geil memory that I have, and should be ok.
Can anyone lend a hand so that I can get my pc running. This has by far been the most troublesome upgrade for me.
    Thanks for replies!

  • Mid 2012 13" i5 Macbook Pro Screen Freeze, Shut Down, 3 Beeps!

Hi guys, my macbook recently started freezing and then shutting down giving 3 beeps afterward. I know 3 beeps is traditionally RAM, but here is a picture of my screen when it freezes. Do you think its GPU and logic board problem or is it really the RAM? Maybe something else? Anyways would love some feedback, going to take it in to the Geek Squad as it still should be covered with a 1 year warranty since I purchased it in February of this year.

I will be taking it in next week, just wanted to have an idea of what it is. This is my second Macbook pro, my first I have had to get fixed 6 or 7 times in a couple years but Apple and Bestbuy wouldn't replace it, even though the first problem happened during the 1 year warranty... After the last time we had it fixed they finally gave me a big discount on another one, but now this one is having problems... I thought MacBooks were supposed to be very reliable! I am not hard on them at all, never been dropped once, not even a scratch on them. I don't get it. Would still like to hear some more thoughts, especially if you have seen a screen like this one! Thanks!

  • Screen Freezes/Shut Downs

More and more often, my screen will freeze up during a video/game and will lock up the computer. Yet I can still hear the sound, just no movement on the screen. I have to manually shut down the computer or standby and refresh it to correct this issue. Could it be some kind of virus?

Hi Frickel and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
When you post for advice, could you please indicate which Mac you have too. The more we know, the better to help you.
There are no known Mac virus at this time, so I sincerely doubt that.
At this point, just to start trouble shooting, use your system restore disk(s) to check the drive for any potential problems.
    "Try Disk Utility
Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    Click the First Aid tab.
Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
Select your Mac OS X volume.
Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Quit Disk Utility from the Menu, then click Utilities/Startup Disk. When the window opens, select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.

  • Msi Neo4-Fi Temperature Freeze/Shut down

I have the following motherboard: MSI Neo4-Fi
The system was working fine for 2 months. Now the temperature is instantly increases 10-15 C after starting the PC-Mark test, and increases more in this great heat.
The computer stops on 65-70 C. Everest measure at aux temp 78C, what is this?
I have checked the cooling, and changed it two times.
The computer is on 52 C at start in bios.
Memtest and ghost freezes too after the start.
The computer contains the following particles:
    MSI Neo4-Fi
    Athlon 64 3200+ E6 Rev. Stock cooler
Chenbro Gaming Bomb Case  (1*12cm, 2*8cm fan)
MSI 7600GS VGA Card (Idle temp 36C)
    2x512MB Corsair Value Select PC3200
    Chieftec 410W PSU (Delta Construction)
    WD 320GB Sata HDD
    Plextor Pata DVD+-RW
Could This be a Motherboard failure ??!??

forget about the fan blowing on the mobo, it doesn't lower the CPU temperature. you will have to take the heatsink and fan off the CPU, make sure that the plastic foil doesn't cover the thermal compound. clear whatever thermal paste is left on the CPU and heatsing and reapply a thin layer of thermal paste (arctic silver 5 is prefered). put the heatsink back on the CPU, and make sure that you connect the CPU fan to the mobo.
with 40C in the room, my winchester would never go higher than 52C, overclocked and under full load, with the stock cooling, so you definately have a problem there. if the computer freezes or shuts down, it is because of the thermal sensor from the CPU.

  • My imac shuts down unexpectedly and now a fan is running??

    Hello,
I have been working on my iMac all morning and it shut down twice within a half hour and I had to press the start button on the back to get it going again. Now their is a loud fan running and I have no idea what is going on. Help much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Hi ebeugs,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iMac shut down unexpectedly, and the fan is running unusually fast or loud, you may need to reset the System Management Controller.
I recommend following this troubleshooting method:
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC.  Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
If the iMac unexpectedly shuts down again, or the fan continues running unusually fast or loud, follow these steps:
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
You can find these steps and more information about resetting the SMC here:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • IMac shuts down...overheating?  Fan not working?

Our daughter reported that her iMac G4, 1.25gHz, had randomly shut down on her a week or so ago. I got it up and going again with a PMU reset, but it needed another one the next day.
Daughter's now moved onto a different machine so no worries about data loss, but I'd like to fix the iMac if possible.
It checks out okay with the AHT, and Drive Genius successfully repaired some disk errors. However while continuing to run tests, it shut down on me again. I noticed though that the case was pretty warm, so I just unplugged it and left it, and when I came back a few hours later was able to restart it. And then I noticed that it was running very quiet...because the fan does not seem to be running.
I have it going now to see if the fan kicks in, but so far nothing. Looking through the top, the fan blades are covered in dust. I can make them turn by poking a paperclip in.
Unfortunately none of the utilities that would allow me to investigate this on a more recent machine (Temperature Monitor, smcfan) work on the iMac.
I'll try blowing out the dust, and I know that the machine can be disassembled and cleaned, even the fan bearings oiled, but of course I wonder if there are any other options.
The iMac is superfluous for us at this point and we'll probably be giving it away, so I'd like it to work.
    Thanks for any help!

In the iMac G4, the fan runs constantly.
From the initial startup in a healthy machine,
the cooling fan is set to run; and as the heat
increases, eventually the fan should run faster.
Except for when the computer is asleep, off,
or if there is an issue in the hardware inside.
    So, a loose wire, a failed sensor, a circuit;
or the fan itself may have a bad motor. A
wire inside the winding could be cracked.
If you can find a computer with other defects
for a low price or free, you could try another
fan from a another similar computer. This
would be much simpler if the computer were
not an all-in-one with the display attached...
A basic box with a fan, holes and ports.
Some older iMac G3 owners made headless
Macs several years ago, when their display
went bad; the whole thing fit into a small box.
And cooling fans, accessory peripherals, &
other items were added to expand function.
    In my iMac G4 1.25 17" USB 2.0 computer,
in use right now, the sensor overview for the
Temperature Monitor shows as in the hard drive.
The version of this Monitor is 4.3.
In Temperature Monitor preferences, note the
Sensors click-on icon, if you click on that, see
what if anything appears. It should have a name
of the computer in there. Click on the disclosure
triangle to show more info. Look into the Temp
Monitor's preferences: Window and if there is a
name for a sensor there, click on it.
It is possible in more modern computers with more
sensors, to choose from those which may appear.
Also, if the General preference panel is set to get
a temperature sample to frequently, that may be
not a good idea, mine is set at 20 minutes, but
may be OK to sample more often.
In the preference item labeled Menu Bar in T.M.
you can choose to have the main Temperature
Monitor quit and also have TM Lite, launch.
Since I launch TM Lite version, and then use it
to see the main application if needed, I don't
need to look into the main one directly.
I am not sure what kinds of drive sensors each
brand of hard disk drive uses, but among my
Macs, this software works and I see the HDD
sensor primarily. These are basic, so the CPU
temperatures would be a guess, not sampled.
There is a widget iStat, which shows temp info
from the same sensor, apparently. I have the
widget's readout turned off on this point, so I
can have the menubar in Finder showing info
and not have to launch a widget to know it.
The rest of the iStat pro's applicable info shows.
The opposite of having a vacuum pull air out
of the top vents in an iMac G4, when the fan
has gone bad, would be to set the computer
on a semi-recessed base with air pushing up.
The air intake slotted holes around the base
can be slightly pressured into from below &
a furnace filter can be used to keep debris out.
Have you looked in a local craigslist for a failed
iMac G4 (near the vintage of yours) to see if
you can get one for next to nothing, for parts?
Sometimes, you can get lucky. Some get tossed
and are full of great parts...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Subject: HP Pavillion zd8000 shutting down still after full cleaning

Like many my screen has a bunch of lines on it, but recently it started shutting down after 5 minutes of operation or so on top of that. The battery hasn't worked in years and the LED on the A/C adapter wasn't on, so we bought a new A/C adapter. Still shut down. I tore it apart to clean it, sure enough it was filthy. Now it's nice and clean inside and STILL shutting down. HELP!

Do you still have the "lines" on screen? You probably need to replace the graphics card. Did it just shutdown or you have a blue screen?

  • Intermittent freezes, shut downs, scan lines, and clicking.

    Hey all,
Unfortunately for me, my MacBook is no longer under AppleCare.
Just a couple of weeks ago, I had re-installed Leopard and all applications. The primary focus for doing this was to devote about 20GB of my drive to Windows.
Long story short, I backed up all my essentials, reinstalled Leopard, and called it a day.
The next day, I started to install Windows (XP). All went well. I was downloading Firefox via wireless, and then all of the sudden, my computer shut off. I turned it back on, went back into Windows, and all seemed fine.
A couple of days later, I was working on OS X. I don't really remember exactly what I was doing, but I had the usual apps open: Adium, iTunes, Safari, Mail. All of the sudden, my computer freezes, and there are some odd lines scrolling down the right hand side of my screen. Now I'm convinced that there's something wacky going on.
I continue to use the computer despite the problems that it's been having, and over the course of the next week or so, it continues to sporadically shut off and freeze, as mentioned above.
However, today, it reached an all-time high. Not only did it freeze with lines scrolling across the right hand side of the monitor, but it was clicking as well. A loud click every half second or so.
I'd say that 90% of the time I've experienced these issues, it's been while I was running VMWare Fusion (with Windows started), or while I was actually in Windows. However, it's happened also while I was just using OS X as well.
Here is a picture of the computer while it was frozen:
    http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/1482/img0014vg8.jpg
I've also ran Tech Tools Pro on the computer, and it came back with no problems.
Disk Utility returns no errors or problems.
Note that this problem has also happened with and without the Mini-DVI adapter.
The obvious solution is to take the MacBook to Apple, however, I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the self-service direction. The loud clicking surely sounded like the hard drive, but I would really like to avoid spending $100 just to see if that's the case. Moreover, the lines across the monitor seem to denote a video issue (in my opinion). In this sense, I'm kind of torn.
...Of course, it could be both. That would be a downer.

Hello, Have you found out what is wrong with your computer. I am having the same problem. The lines and across the entire computer.

I am so fustrated. I know I have to bring it to Apple. It just a far drive 1 hour each way. Hope you can tell me some news that you got on your problem. thank you

  • Photoshop cs5 blinking screen, freezing, shutting down

    Hi,
I'm a photographer and I recently purchased an 8 core Mac Pro 16 Ram with a standard GT 120 video card (Nvidia Gee Force).  When I purchased the computer, I also purchased photoshop cs5.  I am running into issues when editing my images in cs5.  For example, when I drag and drop images into a droplet, photoshop starts going crazy.  My screen starts this flashing, blinking thing (from top to bottom of my screen).  The only way I can get it to stop is by pressing the button on my system to shut it down.  The mouse will move on the screen, but it won't let me click on anything so I'm not able to force quit. I have an apple cinema 30" display, and mac has tested several things.  They seem to think it's a issue with cs5, or maybe it's a possibly of a video card issue or adobe's compatibility with the Mac 10.6.4 version. They think it's an adobe issue b/c I only have issues when I'm using photoshop. My system is completely up to date; all software is updated.  PLEASE help with the issue.  I'm getting further and further behind on my work!!
    Thanks so much,
    Emily

As you can read in all the other topics on the same issue: this is a well known bug in the MacOS 10.6.4 drivers for NVidia cards.
The same bug affects other applications that use OpenGL.
You can find instructions on downgrading the video card drivers in the previous topics, or you can just downgrade the entire OS to 10.6.3.
Hopefully, Apple will get an updated driver out soon.
