Static during transitions

I am experiencing static during transitions and have read a lot of posts that complain about similar issues. I have also read that cross-dissolves are particularly prone to this problem, and that is my typical transition of choice. (I would assume that the cross-dissolve is one of the most common transition effects for most people.)
As others have reported, sometimes extracting the audio (as Apple suggests) seems to work, and sometimes it does not. In addition, having a lot of extracted audio really slows down the performance of iMovie on my older Mac and leads to some strange behavior that makes me think my project will get irreversibly corrupted.
I found it strange, though, that the static happened during some transitions, and not others. Then, I noticed that I was getting sustained static for the entire length of certain clips to which I had applied an effect. Again, only some of the clips to which I had applied the effect had the static, and not all of them.
Then, I think I figured out why only some transitions and clips had the problem. It seems that when I initiated a SINGLE transition (or an effect on a SINGLE clip), and I allowed that SINGLE transition (or effect) to finish rendering before initiating another, there was no static. However, if I initiated cross-dissolve transitions on MULTIPLE clips (or effects on MULTIPLE clips) such that they rendered SIMULTANEOUSLY, then I was far more likely to get static.
I found it very convenient to simultaneously apply cross-dissolves across many clips in my projects, and it takes a lot more user interaction to apply them separately, but it is worth it in the long run to avoid having to extract and/or mute audio at multiple transitions, and then suffer the resulting performance hit to iMovie.
Perhaps this is more of an issue when you have an older (slower) Mac like mine, or perhaps I am crazy, and it was just a coincidence that when I applied SINGLE transitions (or effects) that I did not get static. Perhaps some of you who have had this problem can try this workaround to see if it works and reply to this message. (Note that there may be different issues to which this does not apply. For example, I have seen reports of a single pop at transitions from still frames. I'm not sure whether that is the same problem.)
I seem to recall posting a similar message on the iMovie forum quite awhile ago, but it has long since been deleted. Stupidly, I forgot my own workaround and just had a similar problem with a new project, and I had to rediscover the workaround with an eerie feeling of deja vu.
It is amazing to me that something this important and basic to the functionality of iMovie has not been fixed over the multiple years since iMovie 3. If others can confirm this workaround, perhaps Apple can get a better idea of why it is happening.

Hello: I am having the same problem with a movie, rendered transition to a still image. Nothing fancy, and yet the entire transition is filled with static. I have tried two different transitions to no avail. The static is also in the exported Quicktime movie. so it is not something that shows up in the iMovie preview.

  • Sound problems during transitions?

Ok, i'm attempting to add a transition between a clip of some Talent Show MCs talking(I'm trying to cut out while they are saying something) right to a person singing, in then middle of a song. The sound is giving me issues, as the MCs keep talking while the singer starts singing, how do i make the sound during the transitions stop?
    Thanks.
Once the video stops, the audio keeps going, how do i fix it? That's what i need to know...i think.
    Message was edited by: Chanciffer

I had the same problem - I couldn't figure out how to turn off the sound during transitions, and it was annoying because I had cut my clips exactly where I wanted the sound to end, but the transition does a fade-out with the clip before the transition, and a fade-in with the next clip, so it was adding additional audio that I did not want!
    Here's my work-around:
    (1) Take the clip before the transition, and cut it exactly where you want the sound to end.
    (2) Right click and select "Detach Audio."
    (3) Extend the length of the video clip (at the end) a little for better video during the transition.
    (4) Take the clip after the transition, and cut it exactly where you want the sound to start.
    (5) Right click and select "Detach Audio."
    (6) Extend the length of the video clip (at the beginning) a little bit for better video during the transition.
Now there will be no sound during the transition, the audio will be perfect, and the transition will look smooth.
If someone knows an easier way to turn off the sound during a transition, please post it here. If not, I hope these instructions help!

Fix to allow Animate to automatically handle changes in styles during transitions. This same logic already works for properties (e.g., if you specify different values for x in states and run Animate with a SimpleMotionPath with property="x" then it will automatically determine the from/to values to animate for x). But we needed to add an override for getRelevantStyles() for Animate to advertise the possible styles to pick up changes for so that the transitions array would be populated accordingly.

  • Speaker mode is full of static during calls

My iphone 6 iOS8.0.3 has speaker phone problems. When the phone is in speaker mode and this is only during phone calls, the sound is full of static. This also occurs when my phone is in bluetooth mode during calls. I can play music just fine. Weird.

I went to the Apple Store and they reset the firmware and restored the phone as well.  I am still having the issues. They said the phone was fine and to keep using it for a week.  If there were still issues then to come back and they would run another test to see if the phone was picking up any issues with the reception.  The guy that helped me said that his phone sometimes has an echo for a couple of days and then it goes away.  I am wondering if it is a problem with Rogers.  I am interested to see that you are having similar issues. The static when it comes is a little annoying. It must be a software issue.

  • Using Logic 9.1.8, Mountain Lion, experiencing "static" during midi use, any thoughts?

Recently purchased logic studio. Installed the 9.1.8 update and am running Mountain Lion.
For some reason, I am experiencing a "static" crackling sound when using the midi instruments, even when I am not recording. As far as I've noticed, it is not occuring during audio recording or playback. I recorded a quick track with the computer mic, and didn't notice anything, and I dragged a random audio file in to see if it would static as well, but no. A couple of times a warning popped up:
    Sample Rate 40575 recognized.
Check conflict between Logic Pro and external device.
This happened first when I tried to record a midi track. Then it happened again when I tried to record an audio track with the midi track. I deleted all of the tracks and did the same thing again, and the warning did not appear those times.
Funning thing is, I don't have any external devices connected. I am still very much a beginner with Logic, but have done several projects with it in the past and have not experienced this problem. I'm not exactly sure what this warning means.
I also double checked to make sure there wasn't any outside interference, I disconnected my computer from my speakers and unplugged my sound system just to make sure my speakers weren't messed up, and it still crackled. I used iTunes to see if it was happening there, no static. I've gone through and made sure I don't have any excess programs running, just logic and preview, still static with midi. It will crackle even if I am NOT RECORDING and just goofing around. When I play the track, it will have the identical crackling experienced while playing.
A little frustrating, as I've been anxiously awaiting this purchase. Please, if you have any thoughts or suggestions, I will check them out.
    Thanks.

    Thank you for the suggestions.
I had previously tried all of the above but the airport/wireless thought. Unfortuneately, none of these things made a difference, including the wireless suggestion.
Currently, I am using my Mac's "cheapo" internal audio hardware  (haha). I have a one year old 27-inch iMac,  a good pair of bose speakers, and a polk sub. I don't believe it is an issue with my setup, considering I completely disconnected and unplugged it.
I did, however, do a little info hunting on the internal audio situation, since I was curious what is actually included, and I stumbled upon this interesting little tidbit about my model of iMac:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2718054?start=0&tstart=0
I had previously wondered if I was hearing my mouse in my speakers as well (not just in logic). It appears that this model of iMac may have some grounding issues, as someone later in the thread suggested purchasing and using a ground loop isolator, which seemed to fix any extra interference for them.
Ironically though, I have since opened logic, and do not seem to be encountering my previous static issue(yet).
Fingers crossed, hoping that I will not be experiencing it again. Going to purchase a ground loop isolator, and continue to mess around with logic, just to make sure it was not just an internal audio issue with my iMac.

  • Droid 4 has large static during calls

    All,
Today I was making a call and for some reason during the call my phone picked up large amounts of static. To the point where I had to end the call. I have tried rebooting and calling someone else and it still has static. I have also tried changing my location, but that didn't help. I also tried calling my phone from someone elses and I don't hear the static on the other line until I answer it on my phone. Does anyone have any ideas what is up? I purchased the phone on April 4th. Would they still warranty this? There was no abuse or anything like that. I was just in the middle of a call when it happened.
    Thanks,
    Troy

    Hi,
I just got off the phone with support (I used a different phone). They are sending me a replacement. So if you have this isssue, call support.

  • Audio during Transitions

Weird stuff. In iMovie HD, I'm getting audio from other parts of my project during my transitions. I end up putting the volume to zero during the trsnsitions, but this obviously isn't very smooth.
Anyone else have this problem? Solution?
    Brian

Which version of iMovie? This is the iMovie 09 discussion. (Version 8.01)
Sounds like you have iMovie 5.

  • Photos in iMovie pixilating after transition, but clear during transition

My photos appear nice and clear during a transition, but then pixilated once the transition is complete and you are just viewing the photo. Once the new transition starts, the picture becomes clear again. In my preferences, I have the Playback set to Highest, for field blending. When I tried changing the setting to High or Standard, the pixilation does not change, but that’s only because the pictures are also pixilated during the transition and thus are never as crisp.
    Any ideas?

  • Static during playback of voice recorded through external mic and mixer

I have an external mixer plugged into my USB and sound quality is great playing through mixer (listening through headphones plugged into the mixer) but when I record and playback of through GarageBand I hear lots of static and clicking sounds. I hear the static whether I play through my external speakers or headphones hooked up to my iMac.
I set up a new Real Instrument > Vocals > No Effects
    Input: Channel 1
    Format: Mono
    Monitor: Off
When I use the Cubase software that shipped with the mixer, to record and playback, the sound quality is fine playing through the computer

    TotallyLee wrote:
It happens even in a brand new project. I have an empty project apart from 1 track with the mic as an input. No plug ins or anything on it. I've tried the same switching the mic for a guitar with no problem. The guitar sounds perfect while playing and in playback but with the mic I can't hear anything when recording and the volume on the fader is very low so I have to normalise the track to hear the vocals are a good level. I've always done this with no issues but now it seems to be bringing out all these horrible noises. I should add that the vocals themselves are perfectly fine with no distorting, only this strange static sound during gaps in speech. Not sure if that narrows it down at all?
Ok the fact that the volume is very low is something to correct first, because that's not right. That mic requires either Phantom power or two AA batteries to function, do you have that provided?   The Mic input gain on the Line-6 Pod is where you raise the recording level.
It might also help if you posted a screen shot of logic's Audio preferences.

  • Photos half resolution during transition?

I am cutting some photos into my project.
Whenever i apply a dip to color transition effect (or fade) The photo is half rez during the transition and looks bit mapped- then snaps to full rez once the transition is complete.
    what could be causing this?

Have you rendered the transition? Select the transition and type Command + R.
If you render it and it still looks poor, double check your render settings by clicking anywhere on the time line and type Command + 0 (zero) to see the sequence settings.
In the sequence settings window that opens click on the Render Control tab and make sure the resolution is set to 100% and the Codec is set to same as Sequence.

  • Keyframing still photos causes jerky movement during transition

I am trying to pan over a few of my still photos in my movie by using the keyframe function, and in the playback the movement appears jerky during the cross-dissolve transition.  Can anyone suggest a good way to fix this?  I am using FCE 4.0.1.
    Thank you!

I apologize, I just realized I found the answer to my question - I have pasted the answer from another post below for those that might be reading this:
This is because by adding the cross dissolve, you are having FCE show portions of the clip that precede and follow where your keyframes are. So the dissolve starts, the clip is just sitting there, then begins motions when the keyframe starts . . . etc.
You need to double click on a clip on the timeline, so that it opens in the viewer, then click on the Motion tab and move your starting keyframes for the clip before and after start and end of the transitions on the timeline.

  • Pictures clear during transition, but then go blurry when transition starts

I am putting together some pictures and video together into an iMovie. I've noticed that, when exported to iDVD, the still pictures are sharp and clear during the transition, but once the transition is complete, the picture is blurry and pixelated. This leads to a series of sharp pictures, blurry picture, sharp picture, blurry picture. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there an optimum transition to use to avoid this from happening?

  • Weird 'Static' During Startup

    Hi all,
I'm writing because for the past few days my iMac G5 has been doing this weird thing during startup. It kinda looks like the screen's shaking and a lot of static/snow comes up on the screen.
Once it logs in the folders on the desktop look distorted and the shaking occasionally happens when starting up programs such as iTunes etc.
Has anyone else experienced this, or even better knows how to resolve it? I don't have any 3rd party hardware attached to the computer except for a Digidesign M-Box connected via USB.
Thanks in advance, and sorry if this has already been covered elsewhere.

    Henry,
If there was no change to your hardware or software just prior to this starting to happen, you should make contact with Apple immediately, while your iMac is still under warranty.
    Best of luck.
