Static field component in virtual machine spec

Hello.
I can’t understand some point in JavaCard Virtual Machine Specification v2.2.2.
Section: 6.10 Static Field Component. See table 6-14. segment 4 – it describe “primitive types initialized to non-default values”. It is describes by two parameters : non_default_value_count, non_default_values[].non_default_values – is image of all static primitive fields independence of it type – byte, short, int. This image consist from data in big-endian order.
How I can use it at architecture with little-endian order?
I can’t parse where short or int – I can’t convert it. How I can do it?

As you pointed out it is not known from the CAP file format where single short or int values begin. At access time you know where the value starts and of which type it is. Therefore it looks like you have no choice but to convert the value at every access from or to big endian.
This is from a design perspective definitely not nice regarding the VM design but I don't think the performance penalty is too costly.

    Hi:
    Let us say I have a class
    public class Client(){private int static someField;
    I know if you are running Client.java on a single machine, obviously you will only get ONE incarnation of someField because it is static.
    Now, let us say I run the Client.java on different machines, then there will be one someField genearted per each JVM , is that right??
    can someone confirm??
    I did a serach on Static field on the Forum, but nobody really touched on running it on different machines, so I thought I ask...

    Yes, that's right.

    There will be one instance of the static variable per JVM regardless of whether the JVMs are running on the same machine or different machines.

  • Install R12 on a Virtual Machine hosted on Windows Vista

    I wanted to install Oracle EBS R12.1.1 on Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit but used to get .\jre\nt\1.6.0\bin\java error. Hussein Sawwan
    helped and said that this is not certified. He adviced me to create a VMWare Server. Following is my experience. I hope it is helpful. Any
    suggestions, additions are more than welcome. Thanks to all who helpmed me especially Hussein Sawwan, Helios, Gareth Roberts.
    I used to get .\jre\nt\1.6.0\bin\java error after the installation would zoom through 33%. That was because my staging area was not correct. The staging area should be just next to c:\ or whatever be the root directory (or drive). No space or special characters in folder name. My current structure is as follows:
    c:\r12stage. Under r12stage I have following folders and subfolders
    oraAppDB -- 49 Disks
    oraApps -- 11 Disks
    oraAS -- 3 Disks (This comes from the Rapid Install Tools)
    oraDB -- 5 Disks
    startCD -- 1 Disk plus other folders. Just copy startcd from the unzipped download and paste to r12stage area.
    I then created a virtual machine using VMWare Server (free download but need to register to get the serial number). Because I installed
    vmware server on Vista Home Premium 64 bit Host OS, I have to boot my machine by pressing F8 and then select Disable Digital Signature
    Enformcement. Thanks to Gareth Roberts for this tip. Create a vm and install Windows 2003 by selecting the .img file (first cd) by selecting Use ISO image and then path of the windows 2003 cd 1 (zipped file). start the virtual machine, that will install windows 2003 and then ask for location of 2nd cd. On the host machine, where the second win 2003 zip file resides, unzip the second zip file and name the folder as cd2. share this folder to the __vmware_user__ and from the virtual machine, map network drive to \\hostmachinename\cd2. Select this as the location of cd2 and complete the installation. Install MKS Toolkit from http://cygwin.com/ and visual c++ from Microsoft website. for information on this please refer to the following URL. Thanks to Muhammad Habib
    http://mhabib.wordpress.com/2007/03/14/installing-oracle-applications-e-bussiness-11i-on-windows-xp/
    After installation is done and Windows Update is run, share the r12stage directory on the host machine to the vmuser and launch rapidwiz.cmd from the command prompt and follow the instruction. For internet connection from the VM use Ethernet as NAT.
    If the installation errors halfway through, clean up your VM by following instructions in document id 292424.1 in MetaLink. If you dont have access to Metalink then I summarize the steps briefly over here.
    Launch the Registry Editor.
    Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software key.
    Select the Apache Group subkey and delete it.
    Select the Oracle subkey and delete it.
    Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Current Control Set\Services.
    Carefully select and delete each service beginning with Oracle. For example, delete "Oracle Apache Server PROD_<nodename>".
    When you are finished, exit the Registry Editor.
    Navigate to the Environment Variables editing screen according to your system setup. For example, right-click My Computer and select
    Properties. From the Advanced tab, click the Environment Variables button.
    Select the following system variables if created during the failed installation, and delete them: DISCO_JRE, DISCO_VBROKER, JSERV,
    VBROKER_JAVAVM, VBROKER_TAG, WV_GATEWAY.
    Select the Path variable, but do not delete it. Carefully edit it and remove any component with "Oracle" in the name, or that otherwise
    references the failed install. For example, delete "E:\11.5.10\test\visora\8.0.6\bin;".
    Save and exit System Properties.
    Open a command window and navigate to the C:\Program Files\ directory. Delete the Oracle subdirectory.
    If your Oracle Inventory directory was not C:\Program Files\Oracle\Inventory and was therefore not deleted in the previous step, locate it
    and delete it.
    Restart your machine
    It is now safe to remove the Oracle filesystem that was partially installed during the failed installation. Go to the base install directory,
    or top-level directory under which you installed either the Database Server (DATA, DB) or the Applications Tier Server (APPL, ORA, COMN)
    directories, or both. Note that you may choose to rename a directory before you delete it. This allows you to use the same directory name and start a new installation even before you finish the delete filesystem operation. For example, if you placed your filesystem in a "test" directory under
    "E:\11.5.10":
    C:\> E:
    E:\> cd 11.5.10
    E:\> rename test oldtest
    E:\> del /s /q oldtest
    In another window:
    C:\> cd <stage install directory>
    Q:\> rapidwiz.cmd
    After cleaning up if you still get error like RW-50004: Error Code received when running external process. Check log file for
    details. Running database Install driver for VIS instance, after 13% complte step 1 of 5 then I suggest that you re-create the machine and follow the above steps again. Including installing win 2003, mks tool kit , vc++, etc. It will be a success.
    Starting concurrent manager takes up enormous memory and slows down everything, so if you dont need it then dont ever start it. APPS password is apps and sysadmin user is sysadmin.
    Good luck.

    I had Vista 64-bit machine, installed Ubuntu in VMWare. Installed Oracle apps on 32-bit Ubuntu under VMware and was able to access Oracle apps. But, it is very very slow. It hangs sometimes and takes 15-20mins to display Ubuntu screens. Am I missing something here. I have a 4GB RAM and VMWare can not use all the 4GB. It may be using 2GB of 4GB. Am I missing something?

    # This is the "master security properties file".
    # In this file, various security properties are set for use by
    # java.security classes. This is where users can statically register
    # Cryptography Package Providers ("providers" for short). The term
    # "provider" refers to a package or set of packages that supply a
    # concrete implementation of a subset of the cryptography aspects of
    # the Java Security API. A provider may, for example, implement one or
    # more digital signature algorithms or message digest algorithms.
    # Each provider must implement a subclass of the Provider class.
    # To register a provider in this master security properties file,
    # specify the Provider subclass name and priority in the format
    # security.provider.<n>=<className>
    # This declares a provider, and specifies its preference
    # order n. The preference order is the order in which providers are
    # searched for requested algorithms (when no specific provider is
    # requested). The order is 1-based; 1 is the most preferred, followed
    # by 2, and so on.
    # <className> must specify the subclass of the Provider class whose
    # constructor sets the values of various properties that are required
    # for the Java Security API to look up the algorithms or other
    # facilities implemented by the provider.
    # There must be at least one provider specification in java.security.
    # There is a default provider that comes standard with the JDK. It
    # is called the "SUN" provider, and its Provider subclass
    # named Sun appears in the sun.security.provider package. Thus, the
    # "SUN" provider is registered via the following:
    # security.provider.1=sun.security.provider.Sun
    # (The number 1 is used for the default provider.)
    # Note: Statically registered Provider subclasses are instantiated
    # when the system is initialized. Providers can be dynamically
    # registered instead by calls to either the addProvider or
    # insertProviderAt method in the Security class.
    # List of providers and their preference orders (see above):
    security.provider.1=sun.security.provider.Sun
    security.provider.2=sun.security.rsa.SunRsaSign
    security.provider.3=com.sun.net.ssl.internal.ssl.Provider

    # Properties to configure OCSP for certificate revocation checking
    # Enable OCSP
    # By default, OCSP is not used for certificate revocation checking.

    # NOTE: SocketPermission is required to connect to an OCSP responder.
    # Example,
    # ocsp.enable=true
    # Location of the OCSP responder
    # By default, the location of the OCSP responder is determined implicitly

    # Example,
    # ocsp.responderURL=http://ocsp.example.net:80
    # Subject name of the OCSP responder's certificate
    # By default, the certificate of the OCSP responder is that of the issuer
    # of the certificate being validated. This property identifies the certificate
    # of the OCSP responder when the default does not apply. Its value is a string
    # distinguished name (defined in RFC 2253) which identifies a certificate in
    # the set of certificates supplied during cert path validation. In cases where
    # the subject name alone is not sufficient to uniquely identify the certificate
    # then both the "ocsp.responderCertIssuerName" and
    # "ocsp.responderCertSerialNumber" properties must be used instead. When this
    # property is set then those two properties are ignored.
    # Example,
    # ocsp.responderCertSubjectName="CN=OCSP Responder, O=XYZ Corp"
    # Issuer name of the OCSP responder's certificate
    # By default, the certificate of the OCSP responder is that of the issuer

    # of the OCSP responder when the default does not apply. Its value is a string

    # be set. When the "ocsp.responderCertSubjectName" property is set then this
    # property is ignored.

    # ocsp.responderCertIssuerName="CN=Enterprise CA, O=XYZ Corp"
    # Serial number of the OCSP responder's certificate
    # By default, the certificate of the OCSP responder is that of the issuer
    # of the certificate being validated. This property identifies the certificate
    # of the OCSP responder when the default does not apply. Its value is a string
    # of hexadecimal digits (colon or space separators may be present) which
    # identifies a certificate in the set of certificates supplied during cert path
    # validation. When this property is set then the "ocsp.responderCertIssuerName"
    # property must also be set. When the "ocsp.responderCertSubjectName" property
    # is set then this property is ignored.
    # Example,
    # ocsp.responderCertSerialNumber=2A:FF:00

    I am unable to create new VMs as well.
    I have already run
    sfc/ scannow
    DISM
    Already Tried disabling the antivirus
    Upon using wbemtest and connecting to root\virtualization, I am able to click Enum Classes > Recursive
    Kindly suggest how to get HyperV working please. Any help (short of reinstalling /resetting windows) would be much appreciated.
    Warm Regards,
    Dr Vivek Gupta

    Hi,
    The key point would be this:
    The Virtual Machine Worker Process has lost its connection to the root\virtualization WMI namespace: General access denied error (0x80070005).
    Please open MMC, add Component Services snap-in:
    Component Services -> Computers -> My Computer -> DCOM Config -> Windows Management Instrumentation -> Right Click, Properties -> Security “Launch and Activation Permission” -> Edit -> gave Authenticated Users
    Full Control
    Check the result.

  • Why does IE8 running on XP and Win7 Virtual Machine deletes the history while I'm still browsing the same site with client-side hashbang routing?

    Hello,
    I have a asp.net mvc 5 web application running on .net 4.5 hosted on my local windows 8 machine on macbook pro using parallels. I'm running Internet Explorer 8 Version: 8.0.6001.18702 running on XP and Version: 8.0.7601.17514 running on Windows 7 Enterprise.
     I've got both of the virtual machine source from www.modern.ie
    My web application is attempting to provide single page user experience by having some client-side routing by using '#!/xxx' hashbangs in the url so that I can get and post via ajax and change the hash in  the url without causing the page to reload. My
    code works fine in IE9+ and other modern browsers.
    However, I'm facing this strange issue in both of the IE8 versions. When running my demo app in IE8, I can login, view home page and can navigate from this home page to many details page. From the very first login page, all the pages are the result
    of form's post action via ajax which then expects html from server and loads in the DOM. The page structure of my app is like summary form => Details page (can also contain summary forms) => Details...so on.
    The above process works fine for few of the navigation steps. If I keep navigating from one page to another & go back, I have observed that the browser back button is removing the history items slowly. And a time comes when it totally forgets about
    all the history pages that I visited to reach this current page I'm viewing!! It treats like I have just started my browsing session and this current page is the first page I've landed on with no back option. Now if I again try to navigate, I have encountered
    problems like both the back and forward buttons gets disabled.
    Hope, my words above is clear enough to explain this problem. The same application works fine in IE9+ and other browsers.
    Till now, I have tried following steps on both VMs:
    Resetting IE8.
    Increasing disk space to 1024mb for temporary internet files storage.
    Setting 'Never' for Check for newer versions of stored pages.
    Disabling the automatic crash recovery feature didn't helped in this case. Found this on support website.
    Deleted temporary files, history, cache, etc many a times.
    Search many forums, posted question on StackOverflow, ASP.NET
    Forums - but didn't helped.
    Tried 'beforeunload' event of browser to see if any of the page is reloading because of submit or any other reason. But the page doesn't reload at all.
    The issue is browser forgets about the browsing history while I'm still browsing the same site.
    Is there any possible fix for the issue above? Does IE8 have any issues as many ajax form post is happening on every page?

    I have really tried many things to identify any possible reason of the issue above. Even rewrote all my javascript navigation code and checked server-side code.
    But the only place where I got the solution is at site: http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/bugs.asp which states that there is a bug in IE8 which reads like:
     IE0012: IE Travellog broken when navigating back/away from a page with
     a large POST form If there is a form input field with a value longer
     than 523,659 characters, when you navigate away from the page, IE may
     clear the current session's travellog (similar to history), disabling
     the back and forward buttons. Repros in IE6 & IE7.
    There are following solutions that you can go for:
    - Check for the input field that has lots of characters as mentioned above and solve your problem.
    - If you have control over the system where IE8 will be used, you can add the following registry key on that machine. There is no existing key, so, you need to add a new one:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TravelLog] "MaxSize"=dword:ffffffff
    I am really relaxed to find this information as I spent really long time to solve this issue. Hope this will help someone.

    Can anyone help me to make the last version working?
    Thank you in advance.

    I updated succesfully but now I have another problem, when I try to share a folder it says me
    [virtual-user@arch-vm_desktop sbin]$ sudo mount -t vboxsf Virtualbox /mnt/Virtualbox
    /sbin/mount.vboxsf: mounting failed with the error: No such file or directory
    I read on the wiki and it's written that the problem is the vboxsf module not loaded but

  • Having trouble with creation of a cloud service with multiple virtual machines using java sdk.

    I am creating a cloud service on azure with 2 virtual machines using java sdk API. Service created successfully.
    My input endpoint details are as follows.
    INPUT ENDPOINTS
    Head : 191.238.144.47:2400
    Head : 191.238.144.47:22
    Node0 : 191.238.144.47:43211
    For Head instance port 2400 is for HTTPS and port 22 is for SSH and for Node0 instance port 43211 is for SSH.
    But I am having problem with doing a ssh on Head instance. Sometimes it works sometimes doesn't. Same problem with HTTPS also.
    I have some application running over there but when i try to access it thru browser sometimes it works but most of the time doesn't. When I restart the instances from azure portal, its works after
    that(not always but most of the time).
    Now I am confused what is going on there. I am creating cloud service and virtual machines using java sdk and setting input endpoints also. After creation of all instances i restart every instance programmatically .
    I am not sure whether restart is required or not. It must be something to do with input endpoints only but not able to get the right thing i guess. When i do the same thing thru azure portal(creation of cloud service with virtual machines and setting up input
    end points) everything works fine but not achieving the result when implementing it by java sdk API. Please help me.

    HI Nithin,
    Thanks for your reply. I am setting the endpoints after creating my instances using update call. Here's the code snippet.
    AzureService aServ = new AzureService(session);
     if(aServ.checkNameAvailability(clusterName)) {
               aServ.createHostedService(clusterName, "dbX cluster");
             // Creating head instance
             aServ.createHead(clusterName, imgName, headType, userName, pswd);
            // Setting end points for head node
             String name = "ssh";
             int port = 22;
             aServ.updateVMInputEndpoint(clusterName, "Head", name, port);
             // Restarting head instance
             aServ.restartVM(clusterName, "Head");
           String roleName = "Node";
           String tmpRoleName = "";
           for(int i=0; i<noi; i++) {
                      port = 43210+(i+1);
                      tmpRoleName = roleName + i;
                   // Creating node instance
                    aServ.createVM(clusterName, tmpRoleName, imgName, nodeType, userName, pswd);
                  // Setting end points for node instance
                   aServ.updateVMInputEndpoint(clusterName, tmpRoleName, name, port);
                  // Restarting node instance
                 aServ.restartVM(clusterName, tmpRoleName);
          // Method to update the input endpoint details
          public void updateVMInputEndpoint(String clusterName, String vmName, String name, int port)
            throws Exception {
                    VirtualMachineGetResponse resp = computeManagementClient.getVirtualMachinesOperations().
                                                            get(clusterName, clusterName, vmName);
                    VirtualMachineUpdateParameters updateParameters = new VirtualMachineUpdateParameters();
                    //get the configuration list
                    ArrayList<ConfigurationSet> configlist = resp.getConfigurationSets();
                    //get inputendpoint list and update it
                    ArrayList<InputEndpoint> endpointlist = configlist.get(0).getInputEndpoints();
                    InputEndpoint inputEndpoint = new InputEndpoint();
                    inputEndpoint.setEnableDirectServerReturn(false);
                    inputEndpoint.setPort(port);
                    inputEndpoint.setLocalPort(port);
                    inputEndpoint.setName(name);
                    inputEndpoint.setProtocol(InputEndpointTransportProtocol.TCP);
                    endpointlist.add(inputEndpoint);
                    // Open port for https on head node
                    if(vmName.equals("Head")) {
                            inputEndpoint = new InputEndpoint();
                            inputEndpoint.setEnableDirectServerReturn(false);
                            inputEndpoint.setPort(2400);
                            inputEndpoint.setLocalPort(2400);
                            inputEndpoint.setName("https");
                            inputEndpoint.setProtocol(InputEndpointTransportProtocol.TCP);
                            endpointlist.add(inputEndpoint);
                    updateParameters.setConfigurationSets(configlist);
                    //required for update
                    OSVirtualHardDisk osVirtualHardDisk = resp.getOSVirtualHardDisk();
                    updateParameters.setOSVirtualHardDisk(osVirtualHardDisk);
                    updateParameters.setRoleName(resp.getRoleName());
                    OperationResponse updtResp = computeManagementClient.getVirtualMachinesOperations().update(clusterName, clusterName, resp.getRoleName(), updateParameters);
    And every time i am creating a new cloud service along with head and node instances. Region is "South Central US".
    I am setting ProvisionGuestAgent field to true at instance creation time. Thank you.

  • How to Install Hyper-V on a Virtual Machine in Hyper-V on windows 2erver 2012 R2 ?

    Hi ,
    anybody know  How to Install Hyper-V on a Virtual Machine in Hyper-V on windows 2erver 2012 R2 ?
    I want to create lab but i couldn't  I follow this article but the new VM is off
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/gbanin/archive/2013/06/26/how-to-install-hyper-v-on-a-virtual-machine-in-hyper-v.aspx
    one of hyper-v component is not running
    thanks

    Previously it has been blocked to install Windows Server in the VM and then add the Hyper-V Role.
    However, it has always been possible to install Hyper-V Server inside a VM. (the free Hyper-V Server SKU)
    The Hyper-V Server VM is fully manageable, but it cannot start any VMs.

  • Windows Update fails on Server 2012 R2 Virtual Machine

    I have set up a virtual network with two virtual machines. The first VM is Server 2008 R2 and is set up as a domain controller. The second VM is Server 2012 R2, and has been joined to the domain.  The DC (TestVM1) is also set up as a DNS server.
    From TestVM2 (Server 2012 R2), I am able to log in using a domain login, and I am able to browse to a public website.
    I was able to run Windows Updates from TestVM1, but when I attempt to run Windows Updates from TestVM2, it fails.
    The Windows Update client shows "Error(s) found:" and "Code 8024402F".

    This is blocking further work.  Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    I am having the exact same issue. Fresh build of Server 2012 R2 from the Microsoft Volume Licensing ISO. I tried before and after joining to the domain. Same error every time.  Firewall is turned off. No AV. We do have a cloud proxy service, but I bypassed
    that as a test and got the same error message.  I also tried to stop wuauserv and cleaning out the folder and starting it back up.  No joy as well.  This is a VM server running on ESXi 5.1.  Server 2008 servers dont seem to have
    an issue.  Server 2012 server don't seem to have an issue.  Only this new Server 2012 R2 server.  My logs are below:

  • How do I run a Windows virtual machine?

    I have a program for my research (Scigress) that only runs on Windows. I would like to be able to run the program on my Mac, I assume the best way to do that is to run a virtual machine. I don't want to run Windows all the time, since I strongly dislike Windows. Is there a way to do this in which I can turn Windows off as soon as I'm done with that program? What would be the best way to do this, or the best app to use? I have a 2009 Macbook with Lion installed.

    I apologize, dragon. I didn't fully read your post well before opening my mouth. Sorry, "the ADD" has me (even as a grown man).
    You have really two fundamental choices here on where you could take this. My primary concern above all would be "how resource intensive is this Windows software"? I mean, is it like a CAD or other 3D modeling app or otherwise just... monster? Working in the tech field I have seen CAD programs opening a complex drawing nearly bring say... a dual Xeon, 16GB RAM, 2-4GB of VRAM with cards in tandem (Crossfire or SLI in the PC world, I don't know if it's called the same over here)... but it would literally freeze these beasts of workstations solid for 5-20 minutes while opening and rendering some of these mind-blowing CAD drawings (talented guys, no way I could manage to create some of those 3D models of such just... complexity... in a virtual environment).
    So-- with that being said, that's worst case scenario on the software. That would pretty much really cripple your luck with virtualization/emulation of a guest OS (that is, the operating system that is running "under the command") of the main one you're running.
    If the program is not that kind of one, it would certainly be more convenient to you to just literally almost open "Windows" like it's just another app, literally... and close it/shut it down as soon as you're done, leaving your other OS X desktop work up and running.
    If it *is* going to be a resource hog, then your second option is Boot Camp, which I'm sure you've heard of... You basically split the hard drive (partition it) into two segregated areas of storage and literally you can run either/or and utilize the full power of the machine this way, as you're not sharing CPU/memory. The downside, as sort of mentioned-- is that you have to boot into one or the other, it's not a "program" like the other is, almost; so you'd have to "shut down" or use the little utility app at least to reboot into OS X.
    Think about your circumstances and take a look at that article comparing or also research Allan's suggestion, that is a new one to me. That will at least get you familiar with what the "experience" of virtualizing operating systems is like... then let us know what you think is best and we can go from there and help you. Sorry about jumping the gun earlier. Hope I made up for it with an abundance of information at least the second time...

  • SAPB1 in virtual machine?

    Hello!
    Has anyone had a success story running SAP B1 in a virtual machine, particularly virtualbox? Here is our problem: sql or SAP installer is very inefficient and stalls the installation process at 100% cpu for hours.
    Our setup. Host server:
    2 x Intel(r) Xeon(r) CPU E5620  @ 2.40GHz (2 x 4 cores, 2 x 8 virtual processors)
    24GB RAM
    6 x 1TB SATA-3GB 7200 rpm in RAID5 (raidz1)
    Software: Opensolaris, SunOS 5.11 snv_134b
    Virtualbox 3.1.8
    SAPB1 Virtual Machine (more details - at the bottom):
    Hardware (virtual)
    4 cores, 8GB RAM, 32MB video ram, 2 HDDs:
    C:\ - host: VMDK 80GB, dynamically allocate storage, on RAID5/raidz1 volume, guest: NTFS
    E:\ - host: VDI 200GB, dynamically allocate storage, on the same raidz1, guest: NTFS
    Software:
    Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit (180 days evaluation license)
    SQL Server 2008 R2 (180 days evaluation license)
    SAP B1 8.81
    Situation:
    SQL server is configured by SAP installer. When installing SAP Demo database the VMu2019s cpu usage stays at 100% with sqlserver process at 18%, RAM usage is at only 40% (60% free), the installation process takes 6-7 hours to complete. SQL data and log files are placed in the same C:\ drive as the guest operating system. Disk activity shown by the host system is on average 300KB/s writes. The load on the host machine is 10% cpu for the copy of VirtualBox running this VM but no other cpu- ram- or disk-intensive tasks running at all. Earlier tests showed 30MB/s sustained writes on raidz1 but significantly faster in bursts due to effective ZFS caching in hostu2019s RAM. For what I can tell, there is plenty of disk bandwidth, host cpu and ram and guest ram.
    Thereu2019s also a weirdest thing: CPU figures on guest donu2019t add up: performance monitor shows 100% cpu used on all four cores but when you look at individual processes the biggest one is sqlserver at 18%, SAP setup is 0-3%, taskmanager itself is 6-12%, the rest is negligible including IDLE process at 0-2%. The machine is clearly very busy with slow screen updates etc. but the sum of all running processes plus idle process is at 40-50%. Once install of the demo database  sucessfully finished many hours later cpu usage came back to normal - 95-97% idle.
    Suspicions:
    1. SAP installer and/or production executables are compiled so that they arenu2019t happy at all under a hypervisor or only under virtualbox in particular. Earlier trial installation of the an old, 2004, version of SAPB1 on the same VM didnu2019t show this problem although we didnu2019t specifically test performance, it was just an early test installation. Slow u201Cby designu201D?
    1a. SAP is not happy with evaluation versions of Windows Server or SQL. Slow u201Cby designu201D?
    2. Placing demo DB files and logs on a different virtual drive (E:\) or an iSCSI drive will dramatically improve performance of SQL - This is next thing we are going to try.
    2a. VirtualBoxu2019es realisation of VMDK (VMware disk format) is affecting performance.
    2b. The format of virtual disks was chosen to dynamically allocate storage which is, although it seems plenty of spare host disk performance is available is still inefficient. But then, why CPU usage is the problem? Is that caused by badly written .exe files that do not return spare cpu cycles while waiting for disk operations?
    Many thanks for any tips!

    While the other suggestions here have merit, I wonder what can be done with your current solution...
    Why are you running such an old version of VirtualBox?  Version 4.1.4 is available for Solaris machines; I would think you could use that under OpenSolaris (although I am unfamiliar with the details of OpenSolaris, as I haven't run it).
    The dynamically-allocated disk is the second most likely culprit in the performance issues, right behind the older version of VirtualBox...  I have used the dynamic allocation many times for file servers and application servers, but a database server needs to have the highest disk I/O performance possible.  I don't like to see my client application waiting on the database to allocate new disk space which is waiting on the hypervisor to provide additional disk...  I think you see my point.
    You might take a snapshot or clone the VM and test on another machine, even to the point of cloning the existing virtual hard drive to one which was created as a statically allocated disk.
    Those would be the first two items I would try out.  Let us know how successful you are; I'd love to hear what seems to be the bottleneck, as we are considering placing our B1 services inside a VM.  We are considering VirtualBox, VMware, and Citrix Xen at the moment.

  • WRT54G2 with Subnetted Virtual Machines

    I am unable to access the internet from guest virtual machines on a /25 subnet, although local lan connectivity seems to work fine, and local lan access to the internet works fine. My setup: WRT54G2 in Gateway mode 10.100.200.1/25 Host machine 10.100.200.4/25 Guests (Virtual machines) on the host: : 10.100.200.128 -254 (Host and Guests are Ubuntu 10.11 under KVM, w/virt-manager "routed networking" Static route on WRT54G2: 10.100.200.128/25 gw: 10.100.200.4 Local LAN connectivity is complete. For example, ssh from the lan to any guest works, as does ssh from any guest to any lan machine. Local lan internet access is complete, includiing the vm Host. Ping and traceroute from the WRT54G2 to lan machines, Host, and guests is successful. Failure: Guest machines cannot reach the internet. They can reach the router. Traceroute to an internet address from a guest machine returns responses from the WRT54G2, followed by time-outs. Ping from a guest machine to the internet fails. I have experimented with both /25 and /24 subnet masks on the WRT54G2 lan port without apparent effect. At this point I am rapidly running out of ideas. The WRT54G2 seems to refuse to pass guest machine packets out to the internet. I have found suggestions on various web fora that NAT difficulties can arise when using subnets with the WRT54G2, but I've been unable to track down details. Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance...

    Linksys routers are consumer routers. They don't really support more complex network configurations.
    In your case, the problem is that the WRT only does NAT for it's own LAN IP subnet.
    If a computer inside your LAN (e.g. 10.100.200.4/25) sends something into the internet, the WRT will do source IP NAT from 10.10.200.4 to its public IP address. This happens for all source IP addresses inside 10.100.200.4/25 but not for any other IP address.
    This means, if your VM with 10.100.200.200/25 would send something, it is routed through the host machine to the WRT, i.e. the WRT receives a packet from 10.100.200.200 to an internet IP address for forwarding. As the source IP address is not in 10.100.200.0/25 it won't go through NAT, i.e. the WRT will route the packet with unmodified source IP address 10.100.200.200 into the internet where it will be quickly discarded.
    That's a known limitation of Linksys routers and they don't have any configuration options to configure the NAT function in detail (like you would find in a Cisco IOS router). The Linksys always does NAT for the LAN IP subnet but for nothing else.
    You only have two options:
    1. use NAT on the host machine, i.e. the host machine does NAT between the VMs and the host network. Of course this way, the VMs are not accessible from the outside.
    2. use ethernet bridging instead of routing between VMs and host network. This would create a single ethernet network and you only need a single LAN IP subnet for VMs and the normal network.
