Static IP address on iPhone

Hi, and happy new year!
I have a question for the community. I have just bought a Sonos music system. Every so often the controller on my iPhone loses connection with the system. I've done quite a bit of online research and the issue seems to be with how my router (at BT home hub) allocates and renews DHCP leases. I had a similar issue with my Samsung network printer which was resolved by setting it to a fixed IP address (so the router always assigns it the same IP).
I'm gonna set fixed IP addresses to the Sonos components - but think the principal issue is the IP address assigned to the iPhone as this changes when I come and go from the house. I'm talking about the iPhones IP address on my home network, not on the cellular network.
So my question is this... will setting a fixed IP address to the iPhone on the router (and on the phone) cause any issues I am not anticipating?
I know HOW to do the IP address fixing - just not sure if I SHOULD.
Thanks in advance - and if you have any other ideas for sorting the Sonos system, they'd me much appreciated.
Chris.

SUCCESS!!!!!
I visited my brother-in-law yesterday and attempted to connect with his secure network. By sheer luck, he is using the exact same model LinkSys router. My iPhone connected first time--so the iPhone was eliminated as a source of the problem.
I didn't do a lot of troubleshooting at his house, but I did notice that his network was set for both dynamic DHCP and dynamic DNS. I know that either or both of Windstream (my ISP) and my broadband modem requires a pair of static DNS addresses.
Sure enough, delving real deep into Windstream's support site, I discovered a LinkSys router DNS help page, specifying how to set static DNS addresses in LinkSys routers. I then accessed my router, enterd the known static addresses, saved the router settings, then rebooted the iPhone and connected to the network.
SUCCESS!!!
Thanks to Jane, who suggested it was an ISP issue, Jason, and all at Apple support. dumonj, I'll email you directly. Try this suggestion and see if it helps.

  • Problem iPhone WiFi Connection to Airport Express with static IP addresses

We have our Airport Express configured on the LAN with a fixed IP. It is not distributing IP addresses, or providing DHCP services; it simply links the WiFi to the LAN.
To connect via WiFi you set a static IP for the wireless device and enter all IP information by hand (IP/Router/Mask/DHCP etc). Laptops can connect fine, and use the network.
The iPhone connects to the wireless network ok (we tried with security on and off), however, it seems to be unable to successfully use the network. Any attempt to browse a web page using a numeric IP address, or regular IP address, fails.
Has anyone successfully used the iPhone on a WiFi network with static IP addresses, and a Wireless access point that also uses a static IP address?

The problem with static IP on iPhone was caused by the IP address being blocked by over-zealous network manager...

  • Can I assign Airport Express to static IP Address?

Current setup - Airport Extreme attached to cable modem with 2 hard drives, Airport Express as print server in separate room with USB printer attached (just changed from Linksys with sometimes working NetGear print server). Clients accessing the network: 2 Windows XP, 1 Windows 7, iPads, iPhones, iPods, Apple TV, and sometimes a Mac Book.
The issue is that we don't keep the printing system on at all times (light switch with Express and printer plugged in); We dont't do much printing, and I print to pdf most of the time. As a result, the Express IP address changes every time it's turned on, requiring me to change the port settings on the printer properties before anyone can print. Is there a way to assign a static IP address to the Express so that I don't become tech support every time someone else in the house needs to print something?

Is there a way to assign a static IP address to the Express so that I don't become tech support every time someone else in the house needs to print something?
Yes. The first order of business is to find the AirPort ID for the AirPort Express. You do this by opening AirPort Utility and clicking once on the Express. In the area to the right, jot down the AirPort ID.
Still in AirPort Utility, now click on the AirPort Extreme and click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Click the DHCP tab below the Advanced icon
Look for the DHCP Reservations area and click on the + (plus) button at the bottom
Enter a description, for example AirPort Express
Click the MAC Address button and click Continue
Enter the AirPort ID in the MAC Address box
Assign the IP address you want the Express to use, for example 10.0.1.20
Click Done, then click Apply and the AirPort Extreme will restart
It would be a good idea to power cycle the entire network as follows:
Power everything down...all devices, order is not important
Power up the modem first, then AirPort Extreme, then Express, then devices

  • How do I assign a static IP address?

I bought mSecure from mSeven Software for my iPhone. Had no problem assigning a static IP address to my old PC laptop, but now I've happily switched to Macbook Pro and I can't figure out how to get it done. Need this static IP address to sync my iPhone data to the Macbook Pro. Found something that said I needed to go to "server admin" but I can't figure that out either. I do see how to find my IP address (in system preferences), but I'm not sure how to assign a static address. I'm not the most computer literate person in the world, but I'm fairly teachable - can somebody walk me through this step by step (including what buttons to push to get where you guide me)? Much obliged.

Oh great, forum notifications have grown funky again.
As I understand your question, each client (whether it's a router or not) can be configured to receive its IP address via DHCP, or not. In the latter case you specify its IP address manually in the client. I can't think of a TCP/IP client that does not have this ability.
There is no way to use AirPort Utility to assign specified IP addresses to clients, though you can "reserve" a block of addresses that it will not assign via DHCP.
You can assign an IP address to a client using a directed IP packet, using Terminal (must be run as superuser):
    arp -s <desired IP address> <client MAC address>
... but this does not create any entries in the AirPort's MAC address table. Is that what you want to do?

  • EA6700 - Maximum Static IP Addresses

Is there a limit on the number of Static IP Addresses on the EA6700?  There are currently three open entries called Static DNS 1, 2, 3.   I am using all three, and would like to add a fourth for the WAP300N Access Point.  Is there a way to add a fourth Static IP Address?   Thanks

Thanks for the advice.  I thought I knew what I was doing by "reserving" IP addresses using the DNS entry.  Now that I found and read the User Guide, I understand how to “reserve” these devices.  I still need to find the Linksys valid ranges for static vs dynamic on the EA6700. I don't see this info in the user guide. Or does it matter?
Don't I just go to the DHCP Reseration Table, select the devices, and click on Add DHCP Reservation?  This reserves whatever IP address was dynamically assigned to it.  Currentlu on the DHCP panel, the Start IP address is 192.168.1.100, number of users is 50, so the range is 192.168.1.100 - 149.  I will clear out the DNS entries. I may just reset the router and start over.  If the range begins at 192.168.1.100, then I'll use 192.168.1.2-99 as static addresses and 192.168.1.100-150 for dynamic IP addresses.
Is the default Release Time of 1440 (24 hours) adequate?
Should I keep dynamic and static IP address separated in different ranges as in your example?  .
We have 24 devices on our home network including laptops, desktops, printers, iPads, iPhones, NAS, etc.
I planned on setting static IP addresses for my primary desktop (where I manage the network), network printers, IP cameras, WAP300N Access Point, Seagate BlackArmor 440 NAS, Honeywell 6280 Tuxedo keypad, and Xbox 1.

  • How to apply Static IP address without disabling data plan

Our Network team does not want to open all ports on a server mobile staff needs to access.  We ordered static IP addresses and entered them on the firewall so they can specificall access.  Once the IP address is added to the iPad - the data plan is disabled.

I have just tried giving my iPhone's WiFi a static IP address and it did not stop the cellular data from working.
    I probably misunderstand your problem.
I presume by a static address you meant the WiFi, was this a company internal IP address or an external one?
There could be differences between the iPhone and the iPad in how it handles this situation, my iPad is WiFi only so I could not test this.
If you get no other suggestions on the forum I suggest a visit to Appe store if possible or a phone call to Apple. If you are not under Apple Care there may be a charge for the telephone support but may save a lot of hassle. The option is to ask your Data plan provider.
Sorry I can offer no other suggestions.

  • Is an 'external' static IP address required to set up DNS

    Hi there
I'm going to be setting up a OSX Server 10.3 machine as an open directory master, to take advantage of single sign-on capabilities.
From what I have read in manuals and in this topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=977178&tstart=15 , it is necessary to configure the DNS service first. However, the topic talks about having an external IP address for the server, as well as for the internet router.
Is this the only method that will work? The network only has one external IP address as far as I am aware.
    Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
    Matt

    The answer is, it depends.
If you want your server to provide any external services then it will need an external IP address. Now, depending on your network, you may be able to use a single IP address on your router, having it NAT incoming connections via port forwarding - that's a common setup.
The bigger issue is whether you need a static IP address or can live with a dynamic one. A static IP address is required if you're running certain services such as DNS or Mail. Other services might be able to get by with a dynamic IP, depending on what you're doing with them (for example, it's OK to run a personal web site on a dynamic IP address, but you wouldn't want to do that for a corporate web site that gets a lot of traffic.

  • How to Configure a Blackfin Static IP Address

I've read that the Blackfin lwip stack wants a DHCP server to assign it an IPaddress. I've proven that this works for me using a BF537 EZ-Kit.
Now I'd like to configure an application with a static IP address so I can use a crossover cable between a computer and the EZKIT.
I've seen a method to do this in the LWIP User Guide but this seems to apply only to projects built using Visual DSP.  Is there a method to set a static IP address from LabVIEW Embedded?  The LV "build specifications" properties dialog seems to indicate as such but it doesn't seem to work when I try it. If I disable DHCP my application doesn't work at all.

    Try these steps:
    1) Disconnect your computer from your network.
    2) Connect the crossover cable between your computer and the Blackfin EZ-Kit.
    3) Assign a static IP address to your computer. If you don't know how to do this, follow the directions at the following Microsoft Website:
    https://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/sag_tcpip_pro_manual...
If you don't know what numbers to fill in while following the directions, use the following settings for your computer.
    IP Address: 10.0.0.1
    Net Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 10.0.0.254
    4) Start LabVIEW and open your project.
    5) Configure LWIP to a static IP address. To do this, open the Build Spec dialog in LabVIEW and click on the TCP/IP tab. Enable lwIP and uncheck Use DHCP.  Fill in a IP address.
If your computer is setup with the above settings, the following Build Spec Options can be used for LWIP:
    IP Address: 10.0.0.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 10.0.0.254

  • Set Static IP address on Mac clients

    Hi,
I'm trying to change the IP address on a mac client at startup time to a different value and to be Static type. I need to do it via the command line. I've researched and found out that 'networksetup -setmanual ...' and 'ipconfig set en0 MANUAL ...' would do it, but the 'networksetup' command is not available unless I have ARD installed and 'ipconfig' is not recommended for use other than testing and debug.
Another option I was looking at is editing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist and then doing 'changeip ...' command.
Do you know if there are any other commands that will allow me to change an ip address via the command line, set it to Static/Manual and preferably do it without a reboot?
    Thank you

Ooops, sorry, I forgot that yours is a wired-only network printer.
You are on the right track - just go to where you were and follow my directions - it all works the same with wired as it does wireless.

  • Printer working Scanner not working after changing to a static ip address

I have an HP 7500A wide format printer.  I recently added a second router at my house to extend my wifi signal.  After that, the printer kept dropping the network connection.  So I set a static ip address of 192.168.1.250 for the printer.  Now the network connection seems solid, but when I try to scan from the Scan3 software on my Mac, it says it cannot find the printer.  I have a MacPro running OS X 7.5.  Thanks for any help.

    Hi @Carpenter47
I am sorry to hear the issue is not yet resolved. Let's try something different. I have a feeling the issue might be related to the static IP address.  Please complete the following steps.
From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Right Arrow button () to display the second navigation screen.
    Touch the Network icon.
Touch the Down Arrow () to select Restore Network Defaults, and then touch Yes to confirm that you want to restore the network defaults for the printer.
Return to the second navigation screen, and then touch the Down Arrow to select Wireless.
Touch the Down Arrow to select Wireless Radio, and then touch Off to turn off the wireless radio on the printer.
Return to the Wireless Radio menu item, and then touch On to turn the wireless radio back on.
    Now put the printer back on the network using the steps below;
On the printer control panel, touch the Right Arrow (), and then touch Network.
Touch Wireless, touch Wireless Setup Wizard, and then touch OK.
Touch the name of your network.
If the list does not contain your network name, follow these steps to enter it manually:
Touch Enter New Network Name (SSID).
Enter your network name. Make sure that you type the uppercase (capital) and lowercase (small) letters exactly. Otherwise, the wireless connection will fail.
When you finish entering the new network name, touch Done, and then touch OK.
Touch Infrastructure, and then touch WEP encryption or WPA encryption.
If you do not want to use encryption (a security password), touch No, my network does not use encryption.
If prompted, enter the WEP or WPA key, touch Done, and then touch OK to confirm. The printer attempts to connect to the network.
    - Source for these wireless troubleshooting steps: Wireless & network section of the 7500a support page
At this point, you should now be able to Browse devices in the Scan software and see the printer. I understand you created a static IP because of having a second router, but let's back peddle for a moment to see if we can get the scanning working again. Typically having a second router causes issues as the printer detects 2 access points and I guess you could say 'it gets confused, but we will see what happens with a automatic IP address and go from there.
Please click the Thumbs up icon below to thank me for responding.
