Static-like sound from 27" iMac speakers

I'm getting a loud intermittent static-like crackle from the left speaker on my 27" i7 iMac.
I originally thought it might just be hard drive noise, since it seems to correspond to heavy hard drive activity, but the sound goes away when I plug headphones into the headphone jack. The noise comes out of the speakers at the same volume regardless of the volume setting, even when the speakers are muted, but it goes away entirely as soon as headphones are plugged in (and there is no noise coming over the headphones).
Is there any possible software fix for this, or should I assume there's some loose connection in the hardware?

I've been having the same problem, it has been extremely frusturating. I just purchased a 21.5 a couple of weeks ago, and exchanged it a couple of days ago. The same problem existed (and continues to exist) with both computers. It seems the problem only occurs if I do the following:
Put computer to 'sleep' with headphones plugged in
Remove the headphones while the computer is 'sleeping'
Awake computer (with headphones unplugged)
I then get an extremely loud static noise from the left speaker. It is impossible to make out any sounds (other then the static), and the right speaker is muted. The static is only present if the computer is attempting to run audio (e.g. songs, garageband, alerts, volume controls, etc).
When I plug in the headphines, the sound is no longer present. I can then remove the headphones and everything seems fine.
I spoke to a 'senior support technician' via apple support on two occasions. The first time the told me to exchange the computer, the second time the tech asked me to run the computer I safe mode, go to the 'colonel-something', and I put my computer through several other tests.
The technician eventually requested I make an appointment with the 'Genius Bar' at a local apple store.
This is my first Mac (I've always been a PC user), and this has shed a dark-cloud over the company for me. Although the service has been good , its been a terrible waste of time, and I've never been so fruturated with a brand new computer.
If members of this forum are comfortable, I would request you put your computer through the steps listed above, and report your findings. I would like to know if this is a common issue, or if the store I got the computer from received a 'bad batch'.
If this is a common problem, and apple does not resolve this issue, I will switch back to PC. Although it may seem to be a minor issue, this is unacceptable for a $1200 computer.

  • "static" like sound after 10.5.3 update

Hi all, using a MacBook (Santa Rosa), and updated to 10.5.3 a couple of days ago. However, I am noticing that after resuming from sleep, it will often happen that the first sound that is played will be accompanied with a hissing/static like sound, lasting for about a second. This happens through the laptop speakers, or through headphones if they are plugged in. The volume of the noise appears to be dependent on the volume control setting, if that's of any significance.
Is anyone experiencing a similar issue, or know of a fix? Many thanks in advance.

Yes, You should have a previous system folder after an archive and install.
Can you backup everything to a second HD? Or, were you running Time Machine (a good idea). If you can, then you can safely delete many things from the previous system folder. Or, at least enough to begin testing to see if your apps work.
I routinely do and A&I when I upgrade. Then I test all my apps (or at least the important ones and a sample of the lesser ones). I move the previous system folder to a spare disk and keep it around for a few weeks incase I need to copy something over (like fonts).
BTW, I suspect your start up disk is out of space, not memory. Again backing stuff up, particularly on a laptop is a very sound idea and also allows you to manage your stuff better -- older stuff goes on the backup. Despite some problems, Time Machine works well for this as do a number of commercial products.

I can hear a loud 'CD spinning/fan like' sound from my MacBook Pro intermittently. Definitely not the audio as i muted it. No CD either. And the only programs running are words, safari and mail.

It sounds like the fan but this is the first time I hear it in the past 6mths using this Mac. If its the fan, shouldn't the sound be there all the time and not intermittent?

If a simple reboot doesn't fix it, try resetting the SMU.

  • Sound from Headphones and Speakers

I am getting sound out of the headphones and the speakers on my laptop.  I am trying to hookup my laptop to my tv so that I can watch movies.  I have everything figured out, except that i think I disabled the headphones.  When I plugged the cable into the headphone jack on my L455 laptop and into the RGB audio in on my TV, my laptop asked me if I had connected headphones or a line out.  I wasn't thinking and switched it to a line out.  Because of this, I think i screwed it up and now can hear the audio from both the TV and laptop speakers.  When I search for the headphone driver on my laptop, they are no where to be found.  Any advice as to how to fix this problem.  I would really like to watch this movie sometime tonight without an echo from the laptop speakers!!  If I turn down the speakers, no volume goes to the TV. If I have the speakers muted, no volume goes to the TV.  If I disable the speakers, no volume goes to the TV.  I beleieve this is due to me disabling the headphones, but I can not find it on my computer!!
    Thanks, Cortney

Realtek chipsets do have a "multi-stream" option. Classic mode seems to provide the most normal result, but there was a version of the driver where the behavior was unpredictable and it wasn't possible to know what would happen.

  • How do i connect the sound from my imac to hdtv?

I am using a Kanex cable from an imac to hdtv, went into system preferences and set the sound to the tv. This worked fine yesterday, but for some reason does not work today.

  • I currently have no sound from my internal speakers. When I go to system preferences, internal speakers is not an option - there is nothing there. What should I do to fix this?

I don't know what to do - I don't have any sound coming from my internal speakers, and with headphones there is still no sound coming out. When I go into system preferences under sound, there is nothing there - it says 'no output devices'. What should I do?

    MacBook Pro model?
Hard to suggest a solution without knowing the model.
The following tips may not apply to latest MacBook Pro 13 inch model.
Go step by step and test.
    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
        Highlight  Internal Speakers / Headphones
Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
2.Plug in and  remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    3. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    4. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.

  • No sound from built in speakers but headphones ok, pavilion dv6

    HI all,
Out of a sudden , after watching a youtube video, my speakers and headphone gave  noise when I was RE playing the video that I watched seconds ago.
I restarted my lap, and then didn't hear a sound at all
checked my drivers and updated them
the headphone is working fine. but when I unplug it I hear no sound from my built in speakers. though the drivers are working fine.
took my lap for maintenance to get it cleaned up and checked, they told me the speakers are connected and the wires are all fine! but the problem still exists.
they wanted me to leave it with them to be checked ... but I just didn't trust them since they suggested the sound card is damaged! if it was dagamed I don't think I'll be getting any sounds ! right ?
please, can any one tell me what could be the problem ? and how to solve it ?

running windows 8.1 for the past year

    Hi Chaand,
You can try installing this IDT High-Definition Audio driver, it is not for your model but it is a Windows 8.1 driver. There are no Windows 8.1 driver for your model. If installing that driver doesn't work then it is a most likely a hardware issue with the speakers and you should have either a local technician take a look at it or send it to HP for repairs. You can reach HP Total Care at 1-800-474-6836 in North America or start here if you live outside of North America.

  • Lost sound from the internal speakers

My sound work perfectly from the headphone or any external speakers. But I don't have any sound from my speakers and the sound control get locked when I pool out the headphone mini-jack and the audio outport stay lit. any solution?

    This problem is surprisingly common.
The usual reason for this problem is that a microswitch in the headphone socket has got stuck.  You can confirm this by looking into the headphone socket - if you can see a red light, then the switch is stuck.
The solution is plug and unplug some headphones into the socket 20-30 times.  If that doesn't work, then use a non-conducting probe to reach into the socket and gently release the switch.
    Best wishes
    Bob

  • Help! Suddenly no sound from home theater speakers!

I bought a Sony KDL 46W5100 TV and the BDVE300 Home theater system at BB. I have always had these two hooked up directly to
each other with an HDMI cable and the digital optical cord. There are no other components involved.
We have always had surround sound to the HT speakers when the television speakers are set to 'audio system'
II am in NO WAY an audio/video expert, but I've had to mess with the settings here and there
after one of the kids reset something and I've always been
able to return the system to proper operation.
I am not sure what happened this time, but I cannot get the home theater speakers to give me any sound when in TV mode or
the BD/DVD mode. Theater mode does nothing for the sound either. I know the speakers are connected properly as they work during the 'test' and also when using the FM radio. I also know I am not on 'mute'
I do get video when playing a DVD or blu ray but no sound. I borrowed a BVD E770W, hooked it up and ended up with the same result.
This would lead me to believe that I have some rogue setting in my TV or maybe my HDMI cable is bad? I'm not sure about the
cable as I still have video through it.
I've re-read all my manuals, searched the forums online and I found nothing
Can anyone give me some advice here?
My family would greatly apperciate it

Try unplugging the power cord to TV and Surround receiver for 15-20 minutes. Plug back in and retry. If test tone & tuner have sound, your receiver is working. This will reset your data lines and hopefully restore operation. If not, and the DVD & TV sound hookup is coming thru the TV, the firmware in the TV may need to be updated found here:

  • DM4-1160US - No Sound From Built-In Speakers!

    Hello:
Last week I suddenly stopped hearing sound from the dm4-1160us (Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit)  laptop.  As a technician myself for over 25 years, I have uninstalled, reinstalled, checked Device Manager for possible error notations, updated the BIOS to the model's latest version, tried the Microsoft so-called "fix" for the problem, and shut down and rebooted dozens of times, etc.  Still, nothing!  If anyone knows of a possible solution for this issue, I would greatly appreciated any suggestions or (dare I say) solution.  Thanks.
    This question was solved.

You can isolate this issue to a hardware or software fault by running a live distro of Ubuntu linix. See step number 2 to install it to a USB memory stick.
If the device is not recognized by Ubuntu during its config operations that the probem is likely to be with the notebook's system board.
Is your notebook still within the standard one year warranty period?
