Static on playback?

When I play my i tunes on my computer, it is choppy and some background static.  When I play XM online radio music, it sounds just fine.
What is the problem?

I'm pretty sure these are from the earphones. I might be mistaken but it seems to be coming from my left earbud as well. I am pretty sure that it is the earphones, so apple should replace them. If that does not solve the problem, then it is your nano (which I doubt it would be) and apple will replace it.

  • Bug:  multiple tracks with Matrix Reverb causes static on playback

Some of my .bands I developed under an earlier GB sound atrocious under the latest '08 (v4.1.2) -- if I have more than one real instrument track using my Matrix reverb preset, the playback of the second track has static (not subtle at all... clearly a software issue). The track sounded fine when recording it with the same effect on, but the playback is extremely smurfy. I can deselect the effect on the second track and the static disappears (that is, it was clearly not part of the dry track recording).
Do others see this or similar issues?

this has been mentioned by more than a couple of people, unfortunately.
you might try using another reverb plug-in:

  • Static during playback of voice recorded through external mic and mixer

I have an external mixer plugged into my USB and sound quality is great playing through mixer (listening through headphones plugged into the mixer) but when I record and playback of through GarageBand I hear lots of static and clicking sounds. I hear the static whether I play through my external speakers or headphones hooked up to my iMac.
I set up a new Real Instrument > Vocals > No Effects
    Input: Channel 1
    Format: Mono
    Monitor: Off
When I use the Cubase software that shipped with the mixer, to record and playback, the sound quality is fine playing through the computer

The guitar sounds perfect while playing and in playback but with the mic I can't hear anything when recording and the volume on the fader is very low so I have to normalise the track to hear the vocals are a good level. I've always done this with no issues but now it seems to be bringing out all these horrible noises. I should add that the vocals themselves are perfectly fine with no distorting, only this strange static sound during gaps in speech. Not sure if that narrows it down at all?
Ok the fact that the volume is very low is something to correct first, because that's not right. That mic requires either Phantom power or two AA batteries to function, do you have that provided?   The Mic input gain on the Line-6 Pod is where you raise the recording level.

  • Static during playback with soundfonts

I'm trying to bring a MIDI file into GarageBand and play it back using various soundfonts. However, when I choose "DLS Music Device" as my tone generator and assign a soundfont, I hear a loud hissing and crackling sound during playback. I only hear this when I'm using a soundfont, not with any of GarageBand's internal sounds.
I've tried several soundfonts, most of which I've used successfully in other applications, but none of them will play consistently in GarageBand without the hissing.
    Any ideas?

  • Popping and static during playback

When I am playing music through iTunes there is a static popping sound in the background. This occurs through speakers and headphones (brand new Bose) but does not happen when listening to the same songs on my iPod. As far as I can tell it is happening on my entire library. Any help or suggestions?

I found a nearly complete solution here:
    http://www.geekzone.co.nz/juha/1308
It says to reduce the Quicktime Audio Tab setting from 24 bit to 16 bit.
It was easy and made a big difference (90% of prpoblem seems solved)

  • Bad static on playback

whenever i play a song in iTunes, it is REALLY staticky yet the same songs in GarageBand or another player are clear as day....can anyone think what might be affecting this?

    Hi Christopher
I know.. a bit counter-intuitive, but I could not get anything but static recording at the default 44.1hz, but when I changed it - VOILÀ.  It worked fine.
Here's another weird one:  I cannot use the Samson C01 mic without the Samson Pre app that is supposedly no longer supported by Leopard.   Without, all i have is a bassy, muffled sound.  Launch the app, and the mic works fine.   So, not only is it required (despite the fact that even Samson has stated it is no longer required), but all the functionality works well in Leopard.
    Go figure.

  • First Gen 5GB: Static during playback

Help! During playback (using original driver) the sound output suddenly became very noisy/fuzzy/staticky. I erased the drive, reset it and loaded updated drivers but no change. Is this now a paperweight?
    Thanks!

    Hi Clayton,
A couple of ideas: the simplest (but least likely to work) is to look down into the headphone jack to see if you can see the two copper colored contacts. If one appears to be bent in, you could try to very gently ease it out.
    The second is to fix the solder on the earphone jack. This is more complicated (but do-able) and seems to be not too uncommon a problem (is yours a second generation iPod, 20Gb?). You can read my other thread about it here;

Let me know if either of these things work for you.

  • Static in playback

I'm using an audio soundcard to record from two turntables and a mixer to Garageband and when I record, the red lights next to the volume have come one and off, but either way, the play back is full of static. I've messed around with the input volume on my mixer and on garageband itself. I've also tried changing the buffer size in the preferences. I've also tried changing my RCA cables around and the same static always comes out. I'm getting frustrated and have no idea what to do now.

  • Pink/green breakup, audio static: but I'm on Mac

    Hi all,
I've exported some Quicktime files from FCP. They play fine on the G5 Quad, but when played on another Mac or imported into Keynote, I get the pink/green blocky video breakup, and loud audio static, during playback.
I found a number of posts, with the solution of setting QT to Safe Mode -- but this only applies to Windows apparently. I have all the same problems, but on Mac.
Variables: have exported using Compressor, and directly from FCP. Created on G5 Quad 10.4 Tiger, trying to play on Intel Macs 10.5 (Macbook Pro, Macbook).
Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions?
    Many thanks,
    Brett

Every time I send them a high res .mov file, they say it won't play for them
You are sending them files with a CoDec that doesn't exist on PC. You need to read up on what Quicktime CoDecs actualyl are available on PC. Aside from that, it's rather pointless still. If those clients don't even know how to deal with this or cannot install additional software due to administrative restrictions, that won't do you any good and neither does their request for an "AVI" - AVIs are just as much containers as are MOV fiels and could still have an unsuitable CoDec inside. So the proiper thing to do is to send them native H.264 files exported from AE using Adobe's encoder or WMV files. For the latter you are going to need the Flip4Mac extension...

  • Noises&skipping during music playback on itunes from ext drive audio files.

    hello,
Since my itunes library it is getting too big (about 14000 songs & wave files) I'm using a maxtor one touch II 300gb ext hard drive & another ext 200gb where I moved only the actual audio files.
So I get weird noises, like electric noise or static, during playback & very often some songs just skip after a few seconds to the next song.
I tried everything: on the ipod these files are still bad, on cd as well & on pro tools the same...I can't get rid of these noises & skipping.
So I have the feeling that I'm doing something wrong setting up itunes with an ext drive.
Do I have to put on the ext drive the actual itunes music library.xml & itunes library icon from the int drive?
Or just the actual music & keep the original itunes folder untouched?
Which one should I choose as the main music folder location, int or ext?
Please help I'm lost & i'm losing so many songs during these days...
    Thanks,
    Exi

    Hello,
thanks so much for your support:
I actually did everything but at this point I get lost...
    # After the folder has been copied, locate your original iTunes Music folder, and drag it to the Trash or Recycle Bin. Note: Don't remove the iTunes 4 Music Library files that may be in the same location as the iTunes Music folder.
    # Empty the Trash or Recycle Bin.
I don't understand if they talk about the iTunes music folder located in the internal hd or the one in the external one that now is the main folder for itunes.
Do I have to put the .xml & the music library icon on the ext as well?
    thanks again,

  • Multiple CS5.5 Problems...

Hi, my name's Rich, and I'm an Audition-oholic.  I'm sorry to hit you all with so much so soon, but I'm having some serious problems and was hoping someone out there could help.  I'm using Audition CS5.5 (Windows 7, 64 bit) for the production of audio dramas.  I'm hoping if I explain what's going on, the symptoms will point to a likely culprit.
Sometimes a multitrack will be playing and one of the tracks (say a dialogue track) will stop playing (in the middle of a sentence!) even though the rest of the mix is still playing.  Sometimes individual sfx tracks won’t fire at all, but when I rewind, they do.  It’s impossible to get a complete picture of a scene when random lines/fx don’t fire when they should.  It often gets to the point where the ONLY thing I can hear is the (volume reduced by 20 db) environmental background, and NONE of the dialogue fires at all.  Sometime the sound just cuts off completely.  Everything’s dead silent, but the time indicator keeps moving as it “plays”.  Sometimes if I wait long enough, the "dropped" track will come back, but often other tracks will just stop firing.
Most of the time (usually begins happening about a half hour to an hour into a long session), there will be static during playback, and the static seems to intensify with amplitude.  As time goes on, the static gets continually worse until the mix itself is inaudible.  If I do a mixdown, the static does not appear in the final product.  If I save, quit, and reload, the static is gone, but returns after about a half hour.  Not so much a “problem” as a pointless pain in my hindquarters that shouldn’t be happening.
The program reliably crashes pretty much every time it’s used, with no error message, and at completely random times.  Simply “Adobe Audition has stopped working”. Any attempt to reload from a temp file (ie: the last session quit unexpectedly, would you like to continue, delete, or cancel) yields no results, just an endless loading screen.  I have to remember to save every half hour or so, but since so much work goes INTO every half hour, a lot of work is lost regardless.  While I can't directly reproduce the crash through deliberate action, I can rest assured that it will, and at the worst possible moment.
I'd also like to ask if a dedicated sound card would help with mixing in audition;  I've asked this question to people in the "audio drama community", and the question is simply not answered.  Right now I'm using my motherboard's integrated soundcard; would a "real" soundcard help with processing Audition, or is it a completely seperate piece of hardware that doesn't affect Audition?  If a sound card is required, can someone recommend a good model?  I'm recording my voice work on a USB Blue Snowball, which bypasses the sound card anyway, I believe, but the mixing is where I'm running into problems.
As far as steps I've taken to solve these problems, I doubled my onboard RAM (my mobo is maxed at 8gb), which didn't help.  I also re-installed Audition CS5.5 entirely, and the track-dropping problem continued (at least, on a sesx file I had done previously).
Thank you so much for reading this epic treatise, and I hope someone has an idea of how I can solve these problems!

Thank you so much for your quick reply, durin!
Here’s a mini-update.  I am indeed using a few different reverb effects on the various tracks; mostly Reverb and Full Reverb, simply because they provided what seemed to be the best echo for the intended environment.  I did, however, notice that “pre-render” was NOT clicked on a couple of those tracks, so I clicked it on all of the reverb’ed tracks.  I just did a little bit of editing over the past half hour, and NONE of the tracks dropped off!!  This is a phenomenal improvement over the immediate dropping-off I was getting previously.  This ALONE helps me a GREAT DEAL.  Would it help at all if I dumped all of the reverb tracks into a bus that performs the effect, or would the same thing occur?
The static issue is something that develops over time while I’m working;  I’m about to start production on a much longer piece than I’m dealing with now, so I’ll pay attention and hopefully be able to give you more info.  But what happens is, I’ll be editing for a while, generally between a half hour and two hours, and I will notice kind of a soft clicking in the background (not so much a static as a clicking/tapping).  As time goes on, the clicking becomes more and more apparent until, after several minutes, it’s almost as if I’m peaking the levels and getting a really heavy distortion or feedback.  And as the sound level increases (say, the emphasis of a particular word of dialogue), the feedback gets louder.  I haven’t tried letting the thing sit for a half hour without doing anything, but I will experiment with this and see if it happens with no input from me.  I generally take this phenomenon as an indicator that I should save and quit immediately, because a crash is imminent.
I admittedly do use a LOT of effects; most of my work is in the sci-fi/fantasy realm, and different environments like interior versus exterior where a room ambience is required (and sound fx like a dish dropping has to echo around the room as well or else it sounds fake).  I’m also using several concurrent tracks, some of which are reverb’ed and some not.  But there are lots of folks in the audio drama community that are doing essentially the same thing, but without the constant crashing.  It’s VERY likely that I’m doing something wrong, as I kind of learned this “by the seat of my pants”, and help and advice, until now, has been extremely hard to come by.
As far as disk access, I’m using a striped RAID array, but my scratch disc is an external USB.  Could that have something to do with it?
Anyway, I’ll be breaking ground on my big project hopefully tonight.  A completely new .sesx from scratch.  If the problems continue to happen, I will send that file to the bug report team.  Thank you SO MUCH for your help.  I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it!

  • Static over cd playback (HP Pavilion dv6-6b57sa)

    HP Pavilion dv6-6b57sa
    windows 7 64 bit
i got my new laptop today, really excited, everything seemed great, i installed all the updates, everything worked well and most still does
but... i put in a cd and during playback there was a vast amount of static...
i tried other cds, some have it, some don't.
its not a problem with the cd, it works everywhere else, and its not a problem with speakers as they play other cds, so whats wrong?
i would of though audio would be this computers strong point with the beats...

    i found a fix
go to beat audi management and max the speakers and headphones bar, there must be something loose or not right but the loudness must fix it somehow
it is fine for all volumes then
