Static Routing vs. Access Point

I need helping in setting up my media center. I have the Dlink 520 in wireless mode. I have the linksys WRT300N. And I'd like to set up a static route to my wired network's resources. This device is hardcoded with 192.168.1.X and I need a static route to the 192.168.0.X network. Is there a way to do so, so that my media server will be seen by the server on that network.  Please help..  I've looked at port forwarding and DMZ and they all have a hardcoded 192.168.1.X.  Should I just set this device up as a access point,  even though I have other wireless devices that benefit from DHCP.   Please advise.
Thank you
Mr V.

If you connect the WRT in gateway mode through its internet port to the dlink, you don't have to define any static route on the WRT. The LAN behind the WRT is inaccessible then unless you define port forwardings on the WRT.
If you connect the WRT in router mode through its internet port to the netgear you also don't have to define a static route on the WRT. You must define a static route for the WRT subnet on the dlink. The WRT will just work correctly as it is. You may also have to define a static route on the dlink to forward packets for the WRT subnet to the WRT instead of the netgear.
If you setup the WRT as I have suggested you don't need static routes on the WRT either because the internet port is not used and thus there is no routing on the WRT.
So, whatever you want to do I cannot see any reason in your setup why you think you would have to set a static route on the WRT. You only need routing if the packets have to go one more hop. But the WRT has only two sides and those two sides are your complete LAN. There is nothing else there...
You cannot define a static route for the traffic from inside the WRT LAN to the outside simply because this is implicitly defined with the configuration of the internet and LAN interfaces.
I don't have another suggestion. I think I have listed the major reason why it is beneficial to set up the WRT as access point, mostly because you'll only have a single LAN subnet instead of two. Two subnets complicate many things. One of those things is file sharing across the router which may be related to your problems.
I suggest you try to set it up as I have suggested and we see how it goes...

The signal is perfect (I'm only a few feet away from the AP).
To make sure there is no dhcp problem I tested the swich port in access mode for vlan 30 which supplied an IP correctly. I'm really not seeing the problem and searched the web for days now! Any help would be very much appreciated!

    Hi Rasika
thanks for the reply! 10.0.0.81 belongs to vlan 1. I changed the config as suggested but no luck.. (same problems are logged in the event viewer). the ap is connected to a switchport in trunk mode and vlan 1 is the native lan (untagged). the port also is joined to vlan 30 (and others).
Below the new config. Hope you can see an error..

  • Router and access point

Likely either or. Of course if you "need" wireless you have to have an AP somewhere and many of them are capable of serving up DHCP and doing many functions of a small broadband thingy (I won't call these things "routers", "thingy" seems more appropriate)  :)

which one i should use a router or access point to create a home network lab where i can play around with the DNS and DHCP configuration without changing the ISP router setting??
This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks Community

  • How to add a second router as access point and wifi signal extender

Previously I had 2 linksys routers and was able to configure them as one in separate areas of my house.  I think it is called cascading.  The 2nd router acted as an ethernet switch with 4 extra ports and it provided a wifi signal to areas of my house that previously had a weak signal when I used only one router.
I have since switched to an Airport Extreme as my main router.  I can't seem to get the same configuration with the linksys router, it is Model E1000 and has an "N" signal.  The Linksys E1000 I think is the newer model of the old WRT54G Linksys.  I can't get it configured to work.  I have searched high and low on the internet and can't find anything simple enough for a novice to understand.  I did read something that I may have to assign a "DHCP Reservation" on the Apple Extreme.  I couldn't figure that out.
Can somebody please offer some guidance on how to get this to work?
    Thanks

You have two routers producing two networks with the same name, so they will show up as two networks on any type of scan by a wireless utility. This is normal.
If you had used two Linksys devices, they would probably show up as one network, not two. Linksys has a feature that allows this to occur, but this is not true of Apple devices.
As long as the wireless network name, wireless security and password match up between the two routers, the two networks will behave as if they were one. As computers change location, they will automatically connect to the wireless access point with the strongest signal.

  • Do I need a router or access point / bridge?

Hi.  We have a MS small bus server with a software firewall.  It does dhcp and routes traffic so we don't need the router part of the router.
Wireless  N access is needed.  Will a DAP 1522 (Wireless N access point / switch) offer the same wireless performance as a Linksys wireless N router?
I just bought the DAP access point and am getting 100-130 mb/s with a strong signal.  Would the router work better with its giant antennae?
    Nick

DAP 1522 is a good acess point. It  lets you connect up to 4 Ethernet-enabled devices such as set top boxes, game consoles, or computers to an existing Wi-Fi network for on-demand broadcast, online gaming, or media streaming throughout the home.
With dual-band wireless capabilities, the DAP-1522 is ideal for wireless HD video streaming and gaming applications because entertainment content can be sent over the less crowded 5GHz band.
The DAP-1522 can also be used to create a new 802.11n wireless network using its Access Point feature. Simply connect it to an existing wired or wireless router, and you'll enjoy greater range and data speeds in seconds.

  • Using old Sky router as Access Point

Hello, I am new to the forum so I hope have posted correctly. Having recently moved house I have switched to BT from Sky and have been supplied with the HH5 and the Infinity package. Due to house lay out wifi signal is not great throughout. I am wanting to use my old Sky (Sagem 2504n, I think) router as an access point. Is this possible or would need to flash the old sky router in order to do this. My first attempt did not work (when I try to set ip in sky router to within HH range I get an error message). Basically it would be good to know if I need to flash the firmware or if it is possible to do with the sky router as is before I aware too much more time.. Any help much appreciated!
    Thanks

You should be able to use it as a wired access point provided you change the IP address, and disable DHCP.
This guide, for a Voyager router, should give you some idea of the settings to use.

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If not, do that now and see whether there's any change.
If your browser is Safari, then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm. Any change?
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select the Advanced tab in the Preferences window and uncheck the box marked
    Stop plug-ins to save power
    Any change?
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Log out and log back in. Any change?
Enable Private Browsing in the Safari menu. Any change?
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If Parental Controls is active for any user, please turn it off and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Again, if only Safari is involved, open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Safari, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • Wirelessly adding a new device: Router versus Access Point versus Bridge

My home network consists of a Linksys WRT54GS Wireless router with a couple hardwired PC and a wireless laptop. I want to wirelessly connect my TiVo into this network to download saved video onto the hardwired PCs, and to give my TiVo access to the internet (it currently uses a phone line). It looks to me like the choices to include the TiVo into my home network are to connect it (wired) to:
    (1) a Wireless Access Point (WAP54G),
    (2) a Wireless Bridge (WET54G), or
    (3) another Linksys Router (WRT54G) configured as WAP (router mode rather than gateway).
Are all three options above valid options? If so I would like to understand what the differences between these choices are, and under what circumstances would one be better than the other.
As part of this, is there a reason the Linksys Routers are much cheaper than the WAP or Bridge hardware. This is counter-intuitive since the Router appears to be the more complex hardware with multiple connectors, more memory, etc.
    Thanks.

Well i would suggest you to get an Access point WAP54G as it works wirelessly & you will be able to use many pc's using it without a router. With WET54G you need to connect using the hardwired cable & you need to connect it using the cables to the pc's & configure it.With router you need another router & you can configure it accordingly in a wireless mode to make it act as an access point.

  • Router and access point connection

Tried to get smart today, took and set up my network with a wrt54gs the other day and still have some headaches after finally getting things to work. but my idea was to take my old wrt54g router and place it at the other end of my house for the wii system. I took the old router and changed the setting from gateway to router and gave it a new internal ip address. Everything worked fine, all the wired and wirless computers including the wii worked great, but when I went to my computer, where I installed the easylink program, it showed I changed networks. Do the setup crap again and it can not find the router but showed the old one as the new netork and could not connect, could not get internet or anything at this computer. But every other computer throughout the house was working great and connected to the net with no problem, the only one not connecting is the only one with easylink keeping it from connecting.
So I disconnect the added router/access point and had to run setup again with easy link, once it was up again I reconnect the old router and everything was great, showed the old as an access point and all the devices on the network. So things are great until I close my lid and my computer goes into standby, when I open it up I have the same problem again, but this time I know what to do, and I find as long as I keep this computer on all is great, shut it down all others equipment still works fine all except for the one computer with easylink on it.
Any ideas on to resolve this, I know people in the forums have said for a long time you can't use the two routers the way I have them set up, but it works great, the only problem is easylink keeps screwing me up on the one computer, if I moved the program to another computer it will do the same to that one and leave this one connecting just fine. So far my experience with easylink has been horrible, the only reason it was installed was because the box said it must be installed prior to anything else. before I just plugged things in and put in the settings I needed and life went on.

    Hey,
I think you can try to update the firmware of the router, to check if that stops connection dropping. To update the firmware of router try this:
Go to www.linksys.com/download and select correct model number and version number. Download the firmware and save it on your computer.
Check the file it should be firmware image file like .bin etc. If it is a compressed zip file extract it to get firmware image file.
Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name.
    Go to administration tab there
Go to firmware update sub-tab there
Browse for the firmware image file and click update
When update completes turn off modem & router.
After 2 minutes turn on modem and after 2 more minutes turn on router & it will definately work!!!

  • Router and access point connected to FIOS router

Here's my situation.  Just installed Verizon Fios which supplies their own Actiontec Wireless router.  I have an existing network which comprises a WRTG54Gv6 which was connected to a DSL modem for internet access originally and a WAP54G accesss point as a Repeater to extend the network wirelessly.  I have quite a few wired and wireless connection to this netwrok and wish to retain these devices. My question is, based on where I had to connect the new FIOS router(which is where the access point is) can I connect the WAP54 to the FIOS router(through a switch) and allow the combined WAP54/WRT54G network to still provide my network services and deactivate the wireless service from the FIOS router. How do I configure the FIOS router, the WRTG54 and the WAP54(if change neded).
Thanks in advanced if anyone can help.

Easiest way to configure the Verizon FIOS with Linksys is - Leave the Verizon FIOS unplugged from the Linksys Router and disconnect it's power cable.
    1. Connect a computer to the Linksys Router it's Internet Port...
    2. Access the web interface of the Linksys Router, change it's default address to 10.10.10.1 and leave it's DHCP Server Settings 'Enabled'. Once done you should Power cycle the Linksys Router.Don't change the Router Mode.
3.Connect Verizon FIOS from it's Ethernet Port to the Linksys Router on the Internet Port.
    4. See if you can access the Internet...
You can also have a look at this link to connect two routers. However, both the router's used in the link are linksys routers but you can still follow the link.

  • P1102w 'unable to communicate with any wireless router or access point using the provided SSID

For more than a 1 1/2 years I have been able to print wirelessly.  Prior to getting all set up, I was getting this message and had difficulty with the setup.  At that time I was under warrantly, I was able to get help from HP.  However, it took techs a very long time to figure out why I was receiving this message.  I somewhat recall doing something in the control panel and checking the SSID and password.
I recently received a new wireless router and now my printer does not work wirelessy.  I can't figure it out!!

  • Router vs. access points..

i just purchased a macbook pro and am looking to take advantage of airport..
in my house we wired everything, so i'm not familar with wireless products
has anyone used netgear rangemax? if so... are they quality? also, what is the difference between these 2 products:
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=12648 82&CatId=373
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=14827 05&CatId=373

The main difference is the one on the bottom link only has one port, while the link above has 4 LAN ports, or (Local Area Network) ports. The one with 4 ports will simply enable you to hook up or hard wire 4 computers that are not equiped with a wireless cards. This will also enable you to assign an IP address to a printer and print as well.
Remember the technology is all the same worlwide and many companys use different terms and add things to there ROUTERS. For instanse the Term AIRPORT is used by APPLE to designate and describe there Wireless Technology. The difference using the Airport Extreme Base or Airport Express allows the user to connect direct to the USB port on the extreme or express to afford wireless printing, with any of the hundreds of compatible printers on the market, thus acting as a built in print server and eliminating the need for 2 pieces of hardware.
All of the major manufactures of Routers offer good products for both wired and wireless use. This then brings you to choice. there are some that feel that one may be a little better than another, but again this is just personal preference. We have all had good and bad luck out of them all.
Personally, if you are using all Mac I would stick with the Airport Extreme or Airport Express, if for no other reason the ease of set-up. All come with step by step instructions.
Before I forget welcome to the discussions, and don't forget to mark this post if it is any help, as Helpful or Solved.

Love it! More Bars In More Places! Yahoo and never cuts out...nice job guys worth the money!!!!

    1. Can't find how to set it to use https for access of the admin panel, very puzzling
    WAP4410N
    bugs
    1. WMACFilter.htm&unit=0&vap=0 > Wireless Client List
This needs a To Sort by Client Name, IP Address or MAC Address and it should always list
Select Check box    ||   Client Name    ||   IP Address   || MAC Address
but it currently only lists ( this is bad form and looks rushed? )
Select Check box    ||   MAC Address
    AND No sort ability
This looks rushed because the partner device the WRVS4400Nv2 as the above functionality.
Doen't look good when the same functions don't work / look the same??
    2. WMACFilter.htm&unit=0&vap=0 MAC 20:
If you enter a mac address into MAC 20: and save it it returns blank with the change saved to MAC 19 so it overwrites MAC Address 19 REAL BUG HERE!
    A bug in common WAP4410N and WRVS4400Nv2
I will call this a functional bug
The connection control should have an input box with buttons for Add || Edit || Delete and you should enter the MAC Address in and click add and this should populate a read only textarea so you are NOT limited to just 20 client computers. Basically this should work like the Setup_lan.htm in WRVS4400Nv2 Static IP Mapping but instead of doing mapping just add/subtract/edit Mac addresses and you can fit a lot more than 20.
This is a Major limitation considering I paid pretty good money for this router and access point, I should have vertually limited clients
So back to the Setup_lan.htm in WRVS4400Nv2 static IP mapping......I LOVE this feature and the way it was implemented.....NICE JOB GUYS

  • Trying to set up BEFW11S4 as a "slave" router/access point

I want to set up the BEFW11S4 as a router and access point in the opposite corner of the house from the main wireless router. My main router is address 192.168.1.1, and I configured the BEFW11S4 as 192.168.1.2, with a different WEP key and turned off DHCP, so the main router will hand out addresses.
I am not able to ping the BEFW11S4, nor can I access it with IE. I have a CAT5 Ethernet cable going to the WAN port, and configured the WAN address as 192.168.1.1. I also have an Ethernet-connected PC to the BEFW11S4 and can't see it nor ping it.
What should I do to make this work?
    Thanks,
    Rocky

you need to connect the 2 routers using regular ports. example, from port 1 of main router going to port1 of befw11s4. do not configure the wan ip of befw11s4 anymore. it should only be set to "obtain an ip automatically".

  • Help !!! Static route between two router WRT160NL

    Hi all,
I have my internet connection connect to my main Linksys router WRT160NL  (192.168.1.1) with 192.168.1.x.
My 2nd Linksys router connect to the first one as Gateway as well.
The 2nd router has its WAN ip of 192.168.1.100 and it's local subnet as 192.168.2.x.
My machines at 192.168.2.x can get to the internet and connect to all machines in the 192.168.1.x network.
However, the 1.x network can't access the machines on the 2's network. And because of that, i can not sharing or printing between two network.
I try to add static routes on my main router (192.168.1.1) with the route: 192.168.2.0 mask 255.255.255.0 and defaute gateway 192.168.1.100
However, the route not work still.
anyway to make sure that the 1.x network able to access the 2.x network and from 2.x   access 1.x for sharing files and printing.
    thanks for your help!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

In gateway the router does NAT which makes the LAN side inaccessible from the WAN side unless you configure port forwarding or similar. If it wouldn't do so your 192.168.1 LAN would be accessible from the internet. Static routing won't change this.
You have to disable NAT (aka switch to router mode) on the second router. You have to set up a static route on the main router then. However, most likely your network 192.168.2.* won't have internet anymore because the main router will only do NAT for 192.168.1.* and not for 192.168.2.*.
Thus, if possible set up the second router as access point only and run a single LAN.
