Static vs. animated lower 3rd?

Besides being a personal preference, I'm just curious of your opinions between using a static graphic for a lower 3rd vs. an animated one. By animated I mean one that might have some type of gradient or background that will subtly change. Are there any reasons other than a style choice to choose one or the other? As I am typing this I just thought of compression as one possible reason to go static vs. animated. This will be delivered on the web and iPods.
Thanks.

Well... the whole point of a lower third is so you know who is talking and where they're from. Everything else is eye candy.
As long as you have complete control of the compression (i.e. not going out to youtube which recompresses everything into mush) why not try a little pizzazz? You may find yourself re-doing it a couple of times so you get it right.
There was a time when animated supers were incredibly hard to produce. And when you did one they were pretty impressive. Showed production value. Not any more, now that any schnook can do them. Conversely, everyone expects something more now that a couple of lines of type.
Best advice: give it a shot, don't overdo it.

  • Lower 3rd (in Animation Codec mills +) is darker after exporting to QT?

    Hello
My After Effects lower 3rd (Animation Codec mills +) is darker over video after exporting to QT movie? It only looks darker in the areas where the lower 3rds are layered over the video on the final exported QT. But, this doesn't show up in FCP; it looks perfect in the canvas during playback. So I'm not sure what's happening.
Any help would be lovely. Thanks.

Can anyone spot the error in what I'm doing? It's got to be something simple. I've created a time-lapse using these steps (I think) before, so I don't think there's a bug in the program anywhere. Any help appreciated.
Not exactly an error, but I do have a question. If you are sourcing JPEG images to an image sequence file which creates a QT Photo JPEG compression file which is already import/edit compatible with iMovie and currently plays in the QT 7 Player correctly without a "black screen" problem, why are you exporting the data to the AIC compression format instead of simply saving the Photo JPEG sequence file and importing it directly to iMovie?

  • Technical name for a lower 3rd? (off topic)

This is a bit of a random question, but I remember reading/hearing before a technical term for a lower 3rd. I totally forgot what it was, think it might've started with a T :S. I think it was a term used for a graphic that would go behind the text in a lower 3rd. Anyone have any ideas? It's suddenly been nagging on my mind lol.

And back a hundred years ago, we called them title cards. There was a time when you had to get all your titles (main, lower thirds, subtitles etc) hot pressed white on black, on heavy glossy card stock. These went to the optical house, who put them on the animation stand and shot the proper length plus some, so that either a negative matcher could cut them into c and d rolls (a and b being pix negative rolls) or they could be incorporated into the optical workflow-- sandwiched in the printer with the negative for more complicated processes. You had to know beforehand what the workflow was, so you could shoot interpositives, negatives, internegatives or the ok but very short lived CRI process. All in all, in intensive, expensive process.
    Here endeth today's history lesson.
Aside: today everyone whines because their instantly generated text doesn't seem right. Ugh.

  • Professional Animated Lower Thirds, Transitions, and effect presets.

I shoot and edit a lot of video and would like to know of some professional template HD animations I could get to spice these projects up a bit. Some are business projects, some personal like weddings and parties, some are live bands or music videos.
Is there a company/site out there that has a great selection of these sorts of templates and/or even presets for fast/great effects? mostly I need animated templates for lower thirds, transitions, and intros...
Also, if anyone would like to share what they do in premiere for professional effects that would be sweet. Like what effects you use that I should consider to make the videos more interesting while staying professional...

I make graphic sequences from scratch for lwer 3rds in Premiere. Main tool being the title maker.
I start with HD sequence I'll call Lwr_3rdBking. On this I'll compose motion and layering of solid graphic clips created with Premiere's title maker, photoshop, AE, In camera FX shots, whatever works. I use the Blend option in the opacity controls to create some neat looks.
Then I'll nest the Lwr_3rdBking sequence, and use a 4 point garbage matt to draw a shape the size of a lower 3rd bar. Basically cropping the nested  Lwr_3rdBking sequence.
Then I'll use the title maker to draw a lwer 3rd box over the cropped and matted Lwr_3rdBking. I take care to match the size neatly. I turn off the fill color of the box I just  made, the turn on inner stroke, set it to bevel and adjust the bevel gradient. Shadow could also be added.
When I'm happy with the lower 3rd frame that I created with Title maker, I will lay it on top of the nested & cropped  Lwr_3rdBking sequence, The gives me a lower 3rd graphic that has motion within and is framed nicely.
If I use it repeatedly, I just duplicated the original Lwr_3rdBking sequence in the project window, rename it for it's purpose. Then add whatever text to the each new Lwr_3rd sequence.
It may seem laborious, but really once you settle on an initial design, the creation of subsequent title sequences is very speedy.
    Hope that helps.

  • Creating a third line w/ one Lower 3rd

Can one create a third or fourth line, when only using one Lower 3rd in Final Cut Pro?
    Thanks.

Basically.... no.  It's only a quick template for those too lazy to do their own.  You're better off using title 3d and a color matte.  You could add a gradient for that 80's fade off to one side.  The fun of a program like fcp is that there are multiple ways to do all sorts of things.  You can also build your titles in motion, which incorporates the features of (now nearing extinction) livetype.

  • Moving a lower 3rd between 2 keyframes

I want a lower 3rd .tiff file to start off screen on the left side and using motion properties, I want it to move right. What is the best way to move it right while keeping it on the same Y coordinate? I am noticing that I am unable to use arrow keys to move it because this ends up advancing the frame in the timeline and when dragging with the pointer, I tend to move it either up or down.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
place the playhead at the beginning of the lower third clip, in motion tab>position>use numerical values (in the top left space, right next the plus button enter -960 (are you on a 16:9 project? values depend on your lower third width too) and hit the keyframe button.
Move playhead where you want the lower third movement to end, lets assume to disappear on the right end side, and enter in the same space 960 and a keyframe is automatically generated.
Now your lower third will travel left to right. To customize speed drag second keyframe towards the first one as you wish, the closer they get the faster the movement.
One tip, if you wish to manually set keyframes by dragging the wireframe in the canvas (having image +wireframe selected) you can avoid vertical unwanted shifts by keeping the SHIFT key pressed while dragging.
    Hope that helps,
    G.

  • Lower 3rd templates in Motion?

I am brand new to Motion. How can I access some lower 3rd templates that I can make basic modifications to? Using Motion 3.
    Thanks.

I am also not able to view it in the Viewer, and I tried other Master Templates, so I'm guessing something is wrong with it. Guess it is time to learn Motion.
I opened the Basic White - Lower Third NTSC template.
1.) I selected text and typed over it when it first showed up in the timeline. Is this the only place it needs to be changed OR do I need to change it at some other keyframe?
2.) How do I select a shape to delete it or change its color? Example: the rectangle that the word Live sits on top of. How could I either change the color or delete it and all the shapes on top of it?
    Thanks!

  • Lower 3rd

    Hello Everyone,
I want to ask a question in regards to Lower 3rd.
I am making a dvd with some names on the bottom(Lower 3rd) but something i dont like.
I am creating the lowerd 3rd in Photoshop.THEN i insert it in Premiere Pro.
Then i encode  mpeg-2 file.So far so good. When i play on 22" tv this video the lower 3rd looks very nice. But when i play the video on 46"tv the lower 3rd looks crap.It lookes like it has been resized and i can see pixels.WHAT options do i have?Should i make the lower 3rd  bigger in Photoshop and then after i import to premiere pro just to scale down? Will that work? How do they do it in commercial tv that no matter what size tv you watching the lower 3rd is clear and good quality?
    Thank you

More info needed. In Premiere, what is the source video, and what Sequence setting are you using? Meaning, is it 1080p video in a 1080p Sequence, or SD video, or what? What size is the graphic you made in Photoshop? For 1080i or 1080p, ought to be 1920x1080 pixels, 1.0 pixel aspect ratio, 1280x720 for 720p, etc.
When exporting to "MPEG-2 DVD", if the source file is being downscaled (HD to SD), then check the "Max Render Quality" box for encoding, this helps with downscale.
Lastly, how is DVD player connected to TV? Never use the yellow RCA output, will always look nasty on HDTV. Use a DVD player with upscaling (or Blu-ray player), which will will convert to HD and output to TV using HDMI connection, this will provide superior results.
    Thanks

  • Lower 3rd shapes

I want to create a lower 3rd shape to put my text over. I select shapes > rectangle from the Viewer and want to use this.
    1. How can I size it and see it at the same time? Currently I size it in the control panel tab and have to click back on the video tab to see it.
    2. Is there an easy way to make this into a lower 3rd shape? Right now it seems trial and error. I am scaling it up in the Control panel and then resizing it with the bounding box in the Viewer.
    Thanks.

    Stenwelks,
you need to drop the generator in the timeline, i.e. above the clip you want your shape to be on, then double click it to load it in the viewer (Top Left Window). Now when you make your changes in the Controls tab you'll see the result in the Canvas (Top right Window). Make sure that the playhead is parked over the generator in the timeline.

  • Lower 3rd font selection frozen

has anyone seen this issue. I can't select a font in the lower 3rd controls. I click on it and it won't move or open the listing of fonts. i can only change the text and whether the font is bold or italic. nothing else. its as if the lower 3rd function is corrupt. when choosing lower 3rd in the text menu, it is bold for some reason.

A filter, generator or transition shown in BOLD usually indicates that it's a RT effect, based on your system specs and RT settings.

  • Lower 3rd Text Video Generator

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could tell how to make a lower 3rd title juxtaposed to the right instead of it's defualt juxtaposition, left.
    Thanks,
    Clay

Unless you mess with the center property, I don't think it's possible.
(Even altering the center property isn't really doin' it right, because your text will only ever be left-aligned, never right-aligned)
Could you use another Generator? Boris perhaps?

  • Lower 3rds - No Transparency in Background

This may be elementary to some, but I can't figure it out
Ordered some Lower 3rds and graphics from a company over the internet.  The lower 3rd graphics are sent to Compressor to get them into the format I am using  HDV 1080i60).   But when I put these into the timeline, the background is "Dark" so it blocks out everythig else (Not transparent behind it).  I don't have this problem with the Lower 3rds that are "Stock" in the FC Program.
I am using FC Pro 7 and have the complete Studio to utilize, but just can't figure out how to make them usable.
Need any more info on how I'm set up?
    Thanks

Is the original file not 16:9?  What format was it delivered to you as? How did you convert it? Did you change the dimensions when you converted?
If it comes as 16:9, and if you used Compressor, it won't change the dimensions of the original file, unless you tell it to. If it came in as anamorphic, rectangular pixels, since ProRes is square pixels, it might not adjust the pixel aspect ratio.

  • Lower 3rd effect on v2 track constantly being trimmed when editing

I notice when I'm editing, for some reason, the lower 3rd effect on the v2 track gets trimmed just a bit at the beginning and end of a clip on the v1 track without me doing it. I'm constantly having to adjust these. Anyone ever run into this? Is there a fix? Thanks.
    <Edited by Moderator>

I can't see anything inherently wrong with your methodology. Maybe as a test, put the title on V1, and the speaker on V2. Then cut out the speaker when you want the slide to show. Sort of reverse the process.

  • Lower 3rd superimpose problem

I have a clip of over a minute. I'm trying to superimpose a lower 3rd text to the clip and I get an "insufficient content for edit" error.

What Jason said. Superimpose is taking it's duration from the clip on V1. If you text isn't long enough it can't do a superimpose edit. Text is normally not that long. If you need i to be that duration change the duration before you use the superimpose function. If you don't want it to be that long mark In and Out points in the timeline for the length you want the title to be and then use the superimpose function. Or just drag it to timeline.
