Statistics of 5000+ photos, using Exif metadata?...

Hi everyone!
I am planning to buy a dSLR, but I don't know what lens to buy? Wide angle? Standard? Tele?...
As I have used a camera for the last 5 years, i'd like to make some statistics about the focal lengths I have used to take the pictures...
If possible, i'd like to edit the stats in a spreadsheet, to make graphs, etc...
Do you know if Aperture can export all the Exif metadata of all the pictures into a text/spreadsheet file?
Or do you know any software that could do that?
Thank you!...

It's awhile since I used the metadata export, I'd forgotten that it only includes IPTC data. So you probably know what's coming next...
Aperture Assistant* will export pretty well any metadata to a CSV file:
http://aperture-assistant.com/docs/how-do-i-export-metadata
And a new screengrab I've put up just for this thread...

  • How do I manage photos using a folder - subfolder type structure?

How do I manage photos using a folder - subfolder type structure as I have done previously within Windows? For example, my photos were stored with a folder for each year and sub-folders for each month whicheach  held the photos. Can I do this in iPhoto?

For example, my photos were stored with a folder for each year and sub-folders for each month whicheach  held the photos
    Why bother?
Check out the search box at the bottom of the Window. (Click on the Magnifying glass, it opens it) Now click on the mgnifying glass in the search box) and select 'Date'. Now you can find all the photos from any day, month or year. If you want to find the photos from a range - say a paticular week - then you can do that with a Smart Album.
Organising photos by date means you have to remember the date the shot was taken, and after a while, and after a few thousand shots, this gets harder and harder to do, so you spend more and more time rooting through folders.
iPhoto offers a range of organising tools and each offers more possibilites to quickly find the shot you're looking for. For instance:
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 45k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

Don't know how long it would take to import that many photos but if you stopped import and ejected the card ther is something else wrong here.
I would Force Quit iPhoto. Then Restart your mac. Then restart iphoto to see if any or all of your photos were imported. If they ae you're good to go. If they were not imported I would try importing fewer photos at a time and see what happens.

How do i remove the exif metadata from my jpg file produced with a digital camera photo?

The excellent and free utility Irfanview has the option to remove the EXIF data.
Simply open and the file and do a Save, or Save As with the original name.
Surprisingly, the default is to not keep the original EXIF data.

    Please help!!

Duh! My apologize for not providing the important details.
The system model I have tested on:
    Mac Pro Early 2009
    2.66Ghz 10GB Memory
Dual NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB Cards (original cards)
    Tested on 10.7.4-10.7.5, 10.8.2
Crash Report can be located here:
http://pastebin.com/aeZ2kYvw  (this was using version 10.7.4)
It's just odd since last year we've been using this setup fine with v13.0 and now with v.13.0.3 it doesn't work. The reason for our two independent video cards is so that one card sends video to the monitor screen of the teacher, the second card sends a video signal that can be switched to either a projector or 8 lcd monitors in the lab (we've invested a lot of video infrastructure for this lab). When we tested using a single card for both outputs we would get an odd interlace horizontal thin bar that would go top to bottom ever so slowly. This would appear either when looking at video or when moving windows around. Doing the dual video cards solved that issue for us and have been using the setup since 2009.

  • IPhoto and EXIF Metadata

Is there any way to set iPhoto 6 so that it will preserve all metadata in an image, even if the image is modified in iPhoto? It seems like the EXIF metadata is preserved in my photos upon import into iPhoto, but if I adjust an image using iPhoto all my EXIF metadata (shutter speed, aperture, etc.) is overwritten or lost.
This is very annoying. Why does iPhoto behave this way? It has no business overwriting this metadata that should, by all logical accounts in my mind, remain with the image.

    Jim:
How are you checking the metadata? I find that when I edit, like a crop, the modified jpg contains all of the EXIF data that the original has. I've verified that with other applications that read all the metadata.
The only metadata that is not saved for use by other applications are the comments and keywords. Those are kept in the iPhoto database file.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How to synchronise metadata between Lightroom catalogue and exif metadata (e.g. Orientation and rating)?

    Hi there,
i have some third-party tools that also read my original photos that I use in my workflow. That is especially my private synology cloud, from which I can watch my images in the browser and in mobile devices like my iPhone/iPad.
i Ido not want to export a second copy of the pictures from Lightroom to be used by the other tools and still want to be able to synchronise the two most important values between these tools and Lightroom: orientation and rating.
is there any way to store orientation and rating from lightroom in the original photo's exif data? vice versa is there a way to synchronise these values back from the exif metadata to Lightroom? Especially orientation is an issue, because I have older cameras that do not set the orientation tag and I have to orient them in Lightroom.
rationale: I'd like to use web or mobile devices to rate pictures with my friends and family and do not to have everybody gather around my Lightroom PC.
I don't want to be trapped in the adobe product family. Buying Lightroom-mobile is not an option as I don't accept public clouds and the pricing of it.
    Any hints?
    cheers,
    Meike

Use the Metadata > Save Metadata To File command to write orientation and rating from the LR catalog back to the photo's metadata.  Or set the option Catalog Settings > Metadata > Automatically Write Changes Into XMP.
If an external tool changes a photo's metadata, LR will display an indicator in the upper-right corner of its thumbnail in Library grid mode:
You can tell LR to reread all the metadata from the file by doing Metadata > Read Metadata From File (this will replace all the metadata in the LR catalog, so beware).
You can find all photos that have changed metadata in the file by using the Metadata Status column in Metadata browser of the Library Filter bar.

  • Is there a way to use EXIF information from images in Muse?

I use Lightroom to manage my images. In Lightroom, I enter Caption metadata. (In the Lightroom Library, I enter data in the Caption field of the Metadata section.) Now I'd like use that Caption data to create an ALT tag in Muse. Is there any way to do that, short of copying the text from Lightroom and pasting it into Muse?
Here's why that wouldn't work for me. I have hundreds of images on my site. When I export images from Lightroom for my Muse site, I rename them. The names are generated by LR, so they're not consistent each time I generate them. Over in muse, that means I have to re-enter ALT tags every time I generate a new version of my slide show -- even if the images are the same. So what I'm looking for is a way to have Muse take the Caption data from each image's EXIF Metadata and use it to generate the ALT tag.
Can anybody think of a way to do this?
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

Unfortunately there is no way to do that current stage , you would need to add the tags manually.
    Thanks,
    Sanjit

  • Index of EXIF-metadata from jpeg files by TREX

    Hello,
    I have the following scenario:
We have a central fileserver with a lot of marketing pictures. Our marketing people are looking for a solution to search pictures by data stored in the EXIF-metadata of the jpeg-files.
So I like to integrate this fileserver as a repository in KM, set up an index and let TREX do the search (as of note 663630 TREX can search the EXIF-Data of JPEG-Files).
As goodie I want to give the marketing people the possibility to browse through the pictures in an image gallery. This gallery should be consisting of a query-based taxonomy where all the pictures are sorted by special EXIF-data (e.g. name of the photographer).
Until now I have integrated the fileserver (as a FS-Repository) and create an index.
Before index creation I added the mime-type “image/jpeg” to the TREXValidMimeTypes.ini and restarted TREX.
After indexing the pictures could be found by it’s name, but the EXIF-data is not indexed.
    Now my question:
Why TREX doesn’t index the EXIF-metadata?
And how can I use the EXIF-data in an taxonomy?
    System:
    EP6.0 on WebAS 6.40 SPS16
    TREX SPS16 Patch 2
    KMC SPS16 Patch 2
    Greetings from Berlin, Germany
    Jens

    Greetings to Berlin,
when triggered by KM, TREX will only index metadata that is known to KM as KM propertis.
I do not know in detail and am not at all sure, but you could try to create custom properties in KM that are called exactly like your EXIF-metadata, set them to "indexable", <b>not</b> fill them with values on KM side and then try again.
You may want to try this for just one of the EXIF-metadata as a test.
Even if that works somehow, the maximum result is:
    - Property <b>name</b> existent in KM
    - Property thus searchable an classifiable
    - BUT property <b>values</b> will not show up in KM, as they will remain known only to TREX

  • Problem with EXIF metadata reading

    Hi everyone
I'm trying to read EXIF metadata information. Here is my code snippet:
    uchar* exifData;
    Handle exifDataHandle = filterRecord->handleProcs->newProc(100);
    propSuite->getPropertyProc('8BIM', propEXIFData, 0, nil, &exifDataHandle);
    exifData = (uchar*)(*exifDataHandle);
    filterRecord->handleProcs->disposeProc(exifDataHandle);
After this code executed I have exifData size only 4 bytes, but as I now minimum valid EXIF data should be 6 bytes. Maybe I did something wrong?
    Thanks for help.

Well perhaps it was I who converted in labview 5.1. I remember that the old system was quite clumsy written. It was very slow. But with a few trick it could be speeded up. Just by using refnums like in files and a simple C program for baud rate setting. I could use stable 115200 tranfer rates back in labview 3.1

  • IPhoto geotags not save in EXIF metadata

Why if I geotag a picture using iPhoto, that geotag won't be saved into the EXIF metadata? Exporting for example that picture in, say, Adobe Lightroom, or uploading it to Flickr won't show the location I picked in iPhoto, simply because that information is not stored in the EXIF metadata.
Is it this behaviour what iPhoto is supposed to do? Or is it a bug? Conversely, if I geotag a picture in Lightroom, that geotag will be saved in the EXIF metadata, and correctly read by any other application

iPhoto stores the location data in the edited version and does not write it into the original image file. To create a geocoded image file, export the edited version with the location data included:

  • Photoshop Bug? GPS exif metadata stripped out

We recently discovered that ANY changes made in Photoshop CS4 stripped out our GPS exif metadata.  We also tried it in CS3 - same thing!  And by changes, this includes anything - changing IPTC, adjusting levels, etc.  It even happened when just opening, re- saving and closing the file in Photoshop.
FYI:  We tested it with images exported from both Adobe Camera RAW (Canon files) and Phocus(Hasselblad), and the problem occurred with both.  We've also tried it with files from different cameras, which used different GPS brands altogether, therefore we can rule out:  the GPS units, camera (Canon 1Ds Mark II, Hasselblad H3D-39), and software used to convert RAWS (Phocus, Adobe Camera RAW, Lightroom).  We also tried different computers to make sure no preferences were corrupt on an individual machine, to rule that out.
To make things even more complicated, we just discovered that even though we can no longer see the GPS info in Photoshop CS4, Adobe Bridge DOES see the GPS info!  But - none of our other softwares which normally recognize GPS can see the info (iView, Cumulus).
    Very, very frustrating.......HELP!
Mac OS 10.5.6, PowerMac 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xenon, Photoshop CS4, Files exported to Prophoto RGB 16-bit TIFF) using both Lightroom and Phocus

Addendum: Does anyone know how to add EXIF back into a file?
I assume this would be difficult, as EXIF is hard to remove, much less put back.
Many of these files have already been worked on extensively, and re-importing and re-working is not a good option.
We have already tried the following (did NOT work):
    1)  Exporting the XMP from the file BEFORE any changes are made (with GPS info still intact), and importing XMP to finished file (tried all 3 option settings)
    2)  Copy and pasting the finished file on top of the original (GPS intact file) and flattening, so that the finished file would take on the properties of the old, un-retouched file.  What's odd about this is that after flattening the file, saving, and looking at File Info - it appeared it had WORKED.  But when you close the file, and re-open, the GPS is gone again.

  • How to empty 5000 photos from iPhoto's trash

    hi guys
a friend of mine -  a newcomer to Mac OSX.. - has piled up 5000+ photos in iPhoto's trash & when he tried to empty it , iPhoto simply freezes & has to be closed using ''force quit''.
he asked for my help but, no matter what i tried i simply didn't find a way to do it - one other thing, when we open his iPhoto & select ''trash'' to view it's contents, it doesn't show any thumbnails just little white outlined squares where the thumbnail's should/would normally be - is this normal ?
the reason i tried to ''view'' iPhoto's trash content is that i read on MacRumors ( i think.. ) a suggestion of  ''tagging'' the trash photos, create a smart folder with that tag to it, move the photos back into iPhoto's Library & THEN delete them in bunches of 50 or 60 at a time from that smart folder
so my obvious question is : any suggestions on how i can get iPhoto's trash to empty  ?
according to him his computer ( a 27'' iMac i7.. ) has started showing the spinning beachball a lot lately - could this trash situation be related to this ?
i have ran out of solutions so, any help anyone could provide would be MOST welcome
hoping to hear from you guys soon, many thanks

iPhoto has a well known problem with trying to delete large numbers of photos at one time.
Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
Once you get the library to open in iPhoto try the following:
1 - select all of the photos in the trash and assign a unique keyword, say "Delete", using the Keyword pane:
2 - then drag all of the photo in the Trash bin onto the Photo icon in the left hand pane to move them back to their original Events.
3 - create a smart album with the criteria "Keyword" is "Delete".
4 - not select about 100 photos at a time, drag to the Trash bin and empty.
This should let you delete all of the photos safely.
