Status Indicator Light permanently off

Hi there,
I'm hoping someone can help me with this problem. I've set out some of the history too, as I have no idea whether this is hardware or software related. Apolgies for the length!
1) The immediate issue is that the status indicator light at the front of my black Macbook stopped working today. When I shut the lid or press the sleep option on the Apple logo in the top left corner, it remains off, even though it does appear to go asleep (makes the waking up noise when I open the lid).
2)I have followed the recommended procedures in Apple Help to re-set the PRAM and the SMC settings, and it made no difference.
3)My battery says it's charged at 100%. Here's the profiler report:

4) I have no idea whether it's related, by my hard drive failed completely 3 days ago and was replaced (mechanical failure - sudden onset of click of death, spinning beachball, turned it off, wouldn't turn on, no data recoverable). When the drive was replaced (by Apple, but not under warranty), I also upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. The light seemed to work until today though.
5) This is the third time the drive has failed in the same way and been replaced. The computer is 3 1/2 years old, and first failure happened about 7 months in. Second failure a year ago. Third three days ago. Apple say 'drives fail'. I am a very careful and unadventurous user of my MacBook. I do carry it around, but for large amounts of time it sits quietly on a table, using only licensed software to do not very challenging tasks. Does anyone have any ideas as to why 3 failures?
6) Yesterday I installed Dragon Dictate for Mac 2.0, which seems to be full of bugs and keeps crashing. This morning it was hanging and I tried to force quit but couldn't. I was then able to quit it normally, but the force quit window was still open and I could neither cancel nor make it force quit, and had to shut down the computer and start again.
7) It was after this that I notice the SIL issue, but can't say whether it was working immediately before. I know it worked initially after the Dragon install.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't seem to be able to edit the post above, hence this update.
I closed the lid and left the machine to sleep overnight, and when I woke up this morning the SIL light was on, and now appears to be working as normal each time I close it.
So my question now is:
a) If it happens again, is it something to be worried about?
b)re my point 5): can anyone think what would cause three hard drive failures? In particular, if it's something I'm causing, I'd like to know how not to cause it!
Thank you.

  • My status indicator light is off when my MBP is running.  It just started doing this.

The light is off when the computer is awake and then it does the normal blinking thing when the computer goes to sleep.  This just started recently.  How do I track down what to do to fix this?

I got the same problem? I used MBP 2011 with OSX 10.6.8. I noticed that problem occured after i tried to update itune 10.5.1 two days ago.
But now i m not sure this will be an incorrect behavior cause after searching in this topic ,i found that someone said this is a normal situation. "This status indicator light should be off when the machine is running."
    IS THAT TRUE ???
    So please help us.
    Thanks in advance.

After upgrading to Mac OS 10.6.8, sleep indicator light remains off when I start my 15" MB Pro, but the computer works, and when I put it to sleep, the light flashes as normally. Any suggestions?

    Hi j,
An SMC Reset can fix some SIL issues. If everything is working fine . . . ? Anyway, it shouldn't hurt anything to try it if you want: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • Status Indicator Light not working

I've been having a recurring issue with the status indicator light on my 15.4-inch MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz (Mid-2009). I learned recently that it's normal for the status indicator light to be on when the computer starts up, shuts down and goes to sleep. Lately, the status indicator light has not appeared at all when the computer starts up, goes to sleep, and shuts down. I've tried almost everything and still nothing has worked
1.) Checked to see if any of the ports are working: FireWire, Ethernet, MagSafe, SD card, USB, Mini-DisplayPort. These ports are behaving as normal, working fine.
2.) Checked and successfully paired a seven button Apple Remote to test the IR receiver.
3.) Ran an Apple Hardware Test, found nothing wrong, passed the test.
4.) Reinstalled and erased my hard drive, still having issues.
5.) Bluetooth, AirPort Extreme, microphone, audio ports, speakers, and iSight are working.
6.) Battery works and the charger is working.
7.) Backlighting for display and keyboard work.
The computer is only 1 year and 4 months old. The issue began occurring two months ago. Now the computer does sleep, but if the fans are going, it takes a bit longer for the computer to go to sleep when I close the lid.
I haven't replaced the hard drive or installed any new hardware.
The battery and power information is still at 100%:

My computer's warranty with Apple, including tech support, service, and repair, has expired. However, I do have a remaining two year warranty with Best Buy Geek Squad.
I'm wondering how much would it cost out of pocket to take this computer to an Apple Store for service and repair with a Mac Genius?
So is there anything that could be wrong with this computer and if so, please help!

If you used "Secure erase", you can be certain that there is nothing left on the disk that is causing your problem.
Because you have a long wait for access to an Apple Authorized Service Provider, if you merely clicked "erase" (the one that does not take more than an hour), you could try Secure Erase now if you want to try the final possible fix you can do on your own.
... and installed the combo update recently, the size for that update was over 1GB.
    That is the right one.
I have been regularly doing those permissions. Thanks for the suggestions.
    You're welcome.
I'm taking my Mac to Geek Squad and Mac Genius next month when I visit my dad in Georgia, there's an Apple Store about 45 minutes away from his house and a Best Buy that sells Macs, cause it turns out Geek Squad's coverage for Apple/Mac is only in places where they sell Macs. I used my zip code and turned up 0 results but I typed the zip code for where my dad lives in North Georgia, and a Best Buy in Atlanta is available. So I will definitely go there and visit the Apple Store to at least see what my options are.
If you need help from Apple before you can go to a physical location next month, other Apple Technical Support service option contacts are available here:

Best Buy by far has the best warranty for computers from what the sales associate was telling me. Apparently, Best Buy warranty covers spills, drops & breaks, and overall maintenance issues. In fact, they told me if the computer can't be fixed, they'll replace it with a new one.
It should surprise nobody when salesmen tell customers that their own warranty product is best. Because you have apparently already paid for the Best Buy warranty, you can take advantage of their warranty and enjoy the "best" results if you can find a location that honors it.
Thanks for advice and if there's anything else you can think of, let me know.
You're welcome. You have all my suggestions. However, if I think of anything else, I will post back here.
We will watch for your status update. Please let us know what fix works for you.

  • Apple TV v2 functioning fine, but status light permanently off

I have a v2 Apple TV, and everything seems to be working fine... but my status light is now permanently off.
I have tried disconnecting the power and HDMI cable, and experienced the issue with both Apple TV 4.1 and the newly released 4.2.
Anyone else have this issue, or know of a solution?
    Kevin

I'm having the same issue on a brand-new Apple TV 3 that I received this morning. Everything seems to work fine (other than some home sharing issues that I wouldn't think have any relation), but there has not been a light.
You guys are also the first people I've found who had the same issue, even if it was from the ATV 2 and not 3. If anyone found/finds a fix, please let me know.

  • ACD sleep indicator light not pulsing

I installed Windows Vista Home Basic on my Mac Pro yesterday. My display is a 20" ACD (aluminium).
Since this Vista installation, the indicator light on the ACD does not pulse during sleep, but remains on steadily. The front indicator light on the Mac does pulse as normal during sleep.
In both instances, this indicator light is off as normal on both the Mac and the ACD while the Mac is being used.
Is this an issue others have seen, and does it have any negative indications?

In Displays/Option, the Display Power Button preference had been set to 'Turns the display on and off' and this had caused the problem I described earlier. I am not sure why this option had been selected after the installation of Vista yesterday, because I didn't open Preferences during or after this installation.
I have now changed the option to 'Puts the system to sleep or wakes it'. This is the option I normally use and I was not actually aware it caused the display sleep light to pulse.
The display has now returned to the more usual state (for me) of gently pulsing.
Thank you, Malcolm, you have been very helpful.

  • Status bar lights not aligned on Mountain Lion

Just asking, the little status indicator lights underneath each of the apps on my Mac don't seem to be aligned very well. The very worst is probably FaceTime. It's really unaligned. I got this legally, no torrent whatsoever, I've even got the receipt but I was just curious.

I think yours is showing a problem. They should be perfectly centered. It's not an optical illusion.
The Face Time image is also perfectly centered under the camera, if you measure from back of camera to end of lens. EDIT: I see what you mean about illusion, yes.

  • Indicator light on adaptor plug (one into MacBook) goes off randomly

OK- began recently (like three weeks ago): The LED light (amber while charging the computer and green once charged) on the plug into the computer randomly goes off.
Initially I thought this was only happening when the machine had been charged for a wee while and the green light had been on for a while. While attempting (in vain) to report this to Apple Technical Support (on silent hold for a VERY long time- something in the region of 15 minutes) it also went off on charging the computer (it was showing needing an hour's charging). So that is not much help as it appears to do it arbitrarily.
Another consideration- when the light goes out the computer's desktop indicator (I have mine set to show me charge TIME remaining) of the battery charge remains on full but when I unplug and replug the power adaptor (which is how I get the light to come back on) I notice that the computer has been LOSING charge and erroneously telling me it was fully charged (ie still maintaining supply to the computer despite light being off).
Once this happened with the 9 minutes to spare while in Photoshop. Could have been disastrous! Hence me attempting to get it resolved by Apple...
I finally got word from Technical Support who had to get reply from something called Higher Technical Support that until I rule out the MacBook Pro being responsible (and it is only 5.5 months old) I would not be getting any help from them.
    Hmmm...
Can anyone shed light on this? I have been reading that with earlier batches it WAS the power adaptor to blame and all had their chords replaced.
Is this still the most common solution?
Is there anything I could be doing to figure out what is going on?

There are several things to try.
    First, reset the SMC:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
If this doesn't help, the next thing to try is to find a friend (or an Apple Store) that has a Mac like yours and try swapping your power adaptor with one that is known to be good and see if the problem goes with the adaptor or stays with your Mac. Also try the same thing with a known good battery. By swapping parts with a Mac with a properly working power adaptor and battery, you should be able to tell if the problem lies with the power adaptor, the battery, or your Mac.
It could be that you have a defective battery, as there have been a number of these. There are a couple of battery programs that might apply:
    https://support.apple.com/macbookpro15/batteryexchange/
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
I think if you could try these steps and narrow down the possibilities, it would help toward getting your issue resolved.
    Good luck!

  • Indicator light when screen is off

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro mid 2010 (OS X Lion 10.7.2). I may be getting insane here, but I have this strong feeling in the past (i.e., in Snow Leopard) the MacBook indicator light would turn on whenever you reduced all the screen brightness, so that you knew the laptop was on.
Have this "feature" been removed from OS X, or it never existed in the first place?
    Thanks,
    Alex

  • Xilinx Platform Cable USB II Status Light Always Off

I have been using the Xilinx Platform Cable USB II with ISE WebPACK 10.1 on Windows XP for a couple of years now.
Last week I bought a second Xilinx Platform cable, but I have not been able to get it to work. I have followed the instructions in the installation guide (ug344), and the Windows Found New Hardware Wizard runs twice when the cable is plugged in to a USB port, as expected. The wizard indicates that the installation of the firmware loader and the cable are successful. However, the status light on the cable never turns on. Also, the Cable Auto Connect operation in iMPACT fails:

    Thanks.

Correct. Even though iMPACT reports it is attempting to install firmware, the light is never on. I have not seen it on in any color since I bought the cable.
I have tried the latest version. I have a newer machine running Windows 7 with ISE WebPACK 14.7. Again, the drivers seem to install witouth a problem, but the light remains off. Here is the log when I attempt to connect to the cable:

  • MBP 13'' Cannot detect battery & battery indicator light won't off

This morning, I found my mbp cannot detect the battery and the green battery indicator lights on the side of the mac won't switch off even if I turn off the computer and disconnect the power supply. Also with the problem that the mac cannot detect the battery, mbp cannot be switch on without power supply. I just got my mbp on Feb 2010 and I really enjoy it. These problems worried me a lot. So I went to apple retail store straight away. The staff has a quick look over the battery information on "About this mac" and updated the newest software, and suggests me to make a booking with Genius Bar. Then I went home. I did some searching on google and read some information about SMC and hardware testing. I did the hardware testing first. With a quick scan the computer provide an error code:
    4SNS/1/40000000:TB3T-128.000
And then I did the SMC procedure. This is where I solve the battery and indicator light problem. Now, the mac can detect the battery, the indicator lights return to normal and the battery can be charged. Seems all fine. But do you think I should cancel the booking with Genius Bar since the problem is solved? Or do you suggest to still bring into store and have a check? Thank you.

Reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and advise us if that helped.

  • How can I turn off the pulsing Sleep Indicator Light?

I swear I remember seeing this option somewhere when setting the computer up initially. I'd rather the light be off when charging, or at least steady on. The pulsing is lighting up my whole bedroom.

Can't do it with normal sleep. Use tape or put an object in front of it.
