Status of iPod firmware and of iTunes 7.1.1?

Over the past several months there's been a lot of discussion of problems with the iPod 5G 1.2.1 firmware. Could someone give or point me to a status? Is there a newer, fixed firmware? Tried to find info by searching, but I didn't find anything conclusive.
My wife just got a computer with Windows Vista. I see that iTunes 7.1.1 is supported in Vista, with a few issues to be aware of. Would she be safe with this version iTunes and an iPod with firmware 1.1 (I think it is; whatever is prior to 1.2.1)?
Thanks,
Jack

Well, with iTunes and Vista, there isn't a official level of support as of yet.
iTunes 7.1.1 takes care of some issues with Vista compatibility, but iTunes isn't considered Vista-Compatible as of yet. If she's using iTunes, definitely use 7.1.1, and while I'd recommend iPod SW 1.2.1, you definitely don't have to update.

Are you sure the error message/prompt isn't referring to the amount of disk space available on your PC's internal hard drive?  If you head to Start -> My Computer.  How much space is free on your C: drive?
Maybe it would help if you could post a small screen shot of the error.

my computer crashed saved the music in my music can ijust plug the ipod in and restor itunes

"has a back up of my music been created as i purchased them through itunes yet not plugged my ipone into my computer since purchasing the music?"
No.  You would have to plug it in and transfer the purchases.
" all my music was on my old phone and not in my itunes library."
Why?  This should never be the case. EVERYTHING on your iphone should always be on your computer and included in your regular backup of your computer.
You buy one and only one download.  It is your responsibility to copy/move/backup your music.
You can try contacting itunes support and asking for an exception, but they are under no obligation to allow.

  • My Ipod Touch AND my itunes are apparently broken

My iPod touch crashed while I was updating an app from app store. I had to get it to shut off and then turn back on with the white apple loading for 5+ minutes.
Then when I access my ipod touch, some things are arranged differently than I had them before. Also, now it seems I have the ability to cause apps to disappear (even the default ones like weather and stocks and itunes) by putting them on the 9th page of apps and putting another one on page 9, thus pushing the last one off onto a non-existent page ten.
I realize this is a problem when I see that I've accidentally knocked my App store app off onto this unreachable page ten.
So I figure I better sync my ipod touch and try to fix whatever is wrong.
Not going to work because now my itunes library is all fracked. See, I have been trying to save room on my laptop by transferring my itunes and itunes library onto an external hard drive. I deleted every scrap of itunes related things off my laptop hoping that when I sync my ipod I can simply access all the itunes material I have saved on my external HD.
I load itunes from the external HD and nothing is on it so...ok, I decide to open up the itunes folder on my external HD and physically drag everything into my itunes program before syncing my ipod again. It loads everything, even things I had deleted previously. It now doesn't match up at all and I am not even sure how to begin to make it exactly how it was.
I try to sync my ipod touch anyway to at least try to correct the problems I detailed at the beginning of this post. ...and I get an error message that my ipod touch is synced with another itunes library. An ipod can only be synced with one library at a time. what would you like to do? My options are "erase and sync" which replaces contents of the ipod with the contents of the itunes library. or "transfer purchases" which copies purchases this computer is authorized to play from this ipod to the itunes library. I don't think transfer purchases is wise. but "erase and sync" seems dangerous.
That seems like I would lose anything I downloaded onto the ipod since my last sync like 2 weeks ago.
At this point there are so many levels of failure that I am not sure what to do.
Any ideas out there? I know this is convoluted but I am sure someone here may be able to piece some logic together from it. Or is my ipod touch basically stuck on whatever I happen to have on it right now?
    .

UPDATE: I soft reset the ipod touch and now all of the apps that disappeared onto the mysterious page ten are now back. However I just now consigned "Stocks" app to oblivion once again so I guess that page ten still eats apps if I squeeze anything onto page nine.
Also my issue with itunes and syncing to this new library is still a problem.
Will I lose all my apps and, for example all my downloaded books for Stanza and ibooks if I were to select "erase and sync" with the newly formed itunes library on my external HD. I have been setting that library up and everything that was on my ipod is in here. But I don't know what the locations all my apps and the preferences or my books in my stanza or ibooks. is all of that self contained in the .ips files?
also, there are only 51 items in my mobile applications folder when I have over 100 apps on my ipod touch....so I guess I am screwed out of over 50 apps files since I can't find them to add to my mobile applications folder for syncing.

  • Help with Ipod, restoring, and updating Itunes!

I was trying to buy a game when it told me I had to update my Iphone software to 3.1.2. So I plugged my Ipod in, and tried to update it. It then told me I needed to update Itunes to 9.0.3 before I could update my Ipod. So I started to update Itunes when an error came up.
So I thought that maybe I didn't really need to update Itunes, so I went into the Itunes store and bought the update for my Ipod. It started to download, and then it froze. My ipod had the screen with the apple on it.
So I didn't know what to do and I looked at tech support and it said to restart your computer. So I unplugged the Ipod and restarted the computer. When the computer came back on I pugged the ipod back in and the screen said to connect to Itunes.
So I connected it to Itunes and all my information was gone! It said it detected my Ipod was in recovery mode and to restore the ipod. So I try to restore it and then it says error (1603) and won't let me restore my ipod.
I tried looking up the error and I couldn't find anything. I have no idea what I did and I'm worried I may have lost everything.
So now I can't even get my Ipod to turn on and it's my dads and he is not very happy. And I don't think he has backed it up in a while. So help would be VERY APPRECIATED!!!!!!

hi i have a similar problem as well, my ipod touch showed the connect to itunes icon, i did it and still showed it. i think this is after i tried installing the latest software up date. this is the second ipod this has happened to of mine. i am so frustrated and i would really appriciate help from an apple techicians or anyone else. i saved up a long time for this ipod. pls email [email protected] or txt +254724446340!

  • 2 different Ipods (Shuffle and Video) itunes confusion....help!

Got new video ipod, fiance has the shuffle. its not allowing me to install the new software due to the other itunes already there.....how do i fix this without losing the huge music library already there??

If you have already installed later (or the same) versions of iTunes and iPod updater than the versions on the CD that came with your iPod, you don't need to install the software from the CD. Just plug in your iPod and it will work, without losing your music library.
For your reference the latest version of iTunes is 6.0.3.5 http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/and iPod Updater 2006-01-10 is also the latest version. iPod Updater 2006-01-10 includes version 1.1 for the 5G and 1.1.3 for the Shuffle http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/.
The Shuffle will continue to update in the same way. With the new iPod after you connect it to your computer go to Edit > Preferences > iPod (tab) and specify how you want your new iPod to be updated.
I have been using a 5G iPod and Shuffle with my iTunes for several months now and have found the process very easy without losing anything.

  • Switching from an ipod to an ipod nano and moving itunes

The hard drive of my ipod recently died and I'm considering replacing it with an ipod nano and changing the computer on which my itunes resides. I have 3 questions:
    1. Since I currently have about 4,000 songs on itunes, how easy is it to manage the songs that I carry on the ipod nano since the largest option carries about 1,000 songs?
    2. How easy is it to move my itunes from 1 computer to another?
    3. In moving the itunes to a new computer, will it make a difference whether some songs were bought via the itunes store and others were not (ie, copied from a CD onto my computer's hard drive using itunes)?

"Since I currently have about 4,000 songs on itunes, how easy is it to manage the songs that I carry on the ipod nano since the largest option carries about 1,000 songs?"
You can choose the update option "automatically update selected playlists only" which would mean you could create a playlist specifically for your iPod Nano and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library. Make your playlist a Smart playlist and limit the size to just below the advertised capacity of your Nano (around 1800 MB for a 4G). Or of course you can choose to "manually manage songs and playlists".
"2. How easy is it to move my itunes from 1 computer to another?"
Network the two computers and transfer your iTunes folder from one to another. I moved and iTunes folder recently between two Macs and for it quite strightforward. However as I don't use a PC here's a link that may help you out for moving on Windows.:
New PC & moving iTunes library
"will it make a difference whether some songs were bought via the itunes store and others were not (ie, copied from a CD onto my computer's hard drive using itunes)'
It won't make a difference in the move but you'll have to authorise the new PC to play the purchased ones. Don't forget by the way to deauthorise your old PC if you are disposing of it so you don't use up one of your 5 allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

  • Two iPod Touch and One iTunes Account

I have two iPod Touches. I sync one of them to my Mac, for which I have downloaded and installed the 1.1.3 update on one of them and purchased the new applications for it. Now I would like to download and install the same to the other iPod Touch, which I sync to a Windows machine.
The problem arises when I want to download the update again from the iTunes Store. I get a message that informs me I have already purchased the update and would not give me the option to buy it again.
What is the deal here? I have only one account with which to log in to the iTunes Store. I don't need another one. Or do you have to have an account for every iPod you own?
Anyone got any ideas on how to resolve this issue? Thanks

I HAVE A IPOD 5 GEN REGISTER TO ITUNES ACCOUNT CAN I USE THE SAME ACCOUNT TO REGISTER MY HUSBAND NEW IPOD NANO
You don't register iPods to an iTunes account.

  • If I have an ipod touch and an itunes account, can i get a shuffle and transfer songs i have onto it?

If I have a Mac computer and have an itunes account, can I download songs onto an iPod shuffle if I already have an iPod touch?  If so, how do I do that?  I'd like to get an iPod shuffle for when I work out.  Thanks for your help!

    Yes.
Connect the shuffle to your Mac, launch iTunes.
From the iTunes menu bar click File > Sync iPod
If the music stored on the iPod touch you will need to transfer iTunes purchases to the Mac first then sync the shuffle.

  • Please Help- IPod Classic and Mac/Itunes

    Hi all,
I'm new here because I have a bit of a problem. Please forgive me for my lack of general computer/Ipod knowledge...
I purchased my MacBook about 4 1/2 years ago. I'm not sure exactly what model I have, but the age should help you determine that.
I also purchased my Ipod about 5 years ago. I think it's the first "video" Ipod that came out. It's 40 Gig, white, and pretty basic.
I've taken exquisite care of my Ipod because I'm just interested in putting my new CD's on it, and taking it with me in the car so I don't have to lug around 40 CD's all the time.
Anyway, for the last 2 years or so, my process of putting new music on my IPod was as follows:
    1. Open Itunes
    2. Import CD
    3. Hook Ipod up to the USB port (my Ipod is not synched)
    4. Click and highlight the new CD and drag it to my Ipod
    5. After updating, disconnect my Ipod
    6. Delete CD off of Itunes libary
This has gone off without a hitch for quite some time.
The other day, I went through this exact process, as I've purchased a new CD, but I had an issue.
After I plugged my Ipod in, Itunes recognized it, as usual. But, on the Ipod screen, it continued to flash "do not disconnect." After a half hour of waiting, it didn't go away. I tried to drag the new songs to my Ipod like usual, and then disconnect, but to no avail.
In the past, when I hooked up my Ipod, after about 20 seconds, the "Do Not Disconnect" screen would disappear, and take me to my main menu (on the Ipod).
Now, that screen doesn't turn off, and I can't get new songs onto the device.
Please help...I'm not very good with any of this, and would very much like to hear my new music.
    Thanks for your help!
    Jeff

hold the menu and middle buttons down together until the screen on the ipod goes blank. that restarts it then try your normal process again

  • ITunes erased my library(!!?!), I put everything back and iTunes is now saying my iPhone 4 is not synced to my library any more. This also happened with my iPod Touch and now iTunes will not update, resync and put all my music back.

I have never used another computer to sync my phone or ipod too. I do not want to lose everything. I am quite frankly at the end of my rope and thoroughly regret the fact that I am stuck with an iphone 4 for 2 years.
    Someone, anyone...help??!

Sounds like you've taken the wrong course of action after a missing library error. Ideally you would have just restored a backup at the first sign of trouble.
Each iTunes library contains a unique ID that is also recorded in any device that syncs with it. After your rebuild the two IDs won't match so iTunes will try to treat the devices as "new".
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
    Alternatively, for each device...
You should be able to transfer your purchases into a newly authorised library, backup the device, recover any non-store purchased media with the tips in  this post from forum regular Zevoneer, (skip this if you've already got all the media) then restore the device from the backup you just made. That should  preserve all your data and switch the assocation of the device to the new library. I've had positive feedback on this method from other users but I've never had to test it personally.
