  • Won't stay awake

    Please help!
My G5 won't stay awake. Yesterday when I was using my computer, it went into slep mode while I was online. I pressed a key on the key board, and it woke back up for a few seconds, and then went back to sleep. I went through this a few times, and it kept doing the same thing. I was eventually able to keep it awake long enough to shut it down. Today, it was doing the same thing, so I shut it down, and unplugged it for a while, and when I plugged it in and turned on again, it would still only stay awake for a few seconds. Rign now, it is unplugged.
Any help at all would be greatly appriciated!

  • F2105 HP Monitor Will NOT Stay Awake

Failed to awaken when W8 computer did.
Have tried the monitor on W7, XP, another W8 computer and a Mac OsX - on all of which the monitor had previously worked.
When the monitor is first hooked up (VGA, DVI) or turned on the monitor shows the expected display for about 3 seconds and then announces that it is going to sleep due to no input.
The menu button does nada. Nor does holding down either the power button or the menu button for 2 minutes.
I see reports of this on the forum going back to 2010, but no one seems to have solved the issue that I can see.
To me it seems that it might well be a firmware issue on the monitor's board. Does anyone know how the firmware can be rebooted or replaced?

    Hello @PanzerFaust,
I understand that your HP f2105 21 inch LCD Monitor will not stay awake and you are looking for a resolution to this issue. I am providing you with some steps you can try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
If the above steps did not resolve your issue you can try the monitor on a computer or other device to see if the issue persists. If it does I think it would be best if you contact HP Technical Support for repair options.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • MBP Can't Stay Awake

On three occasions over the last two months my MBP has gone to sleep as normal, but on being woken shows the screen for about 2-3 seconds then sleeps again. Battery is not depleted, and even happens when plugged in. The first time it was OK after forcing a restart - I had to turn it off with a long press on the power button as it wouldn't stay awake long enough to shut down more politely. The second time that didn't work by itself, but it did start up in single user mode and allow a permissions repair after which it started up again normally. Today it happened again, and the above tricks didn't work. I zapped the PRAM a few times but no luck, so I took out the battery, unplugged it and pressed the power button for a minute. That worked.
Now I have only Apple RAM in here that came with the machine, and have applied all system updates as they have come out. I did have the SmartSleep prefpane installed, but the first of these narcolepsy episodes happened before I installed it. I have removed it for now, just in case.
    Any ideas?
    Chris

I think I may have solved the problem at least, for now. I did the battery conditioning routine recommended for new laptops (and which I had done on this MBP when it first arrived), by letting it run down the battery until it hibernated, left it in that state for several hours and then recharged the battery fully. It has now gone overnight asleep three times without the problem above recurring. Given that a power manager reset temporarily fixed it, it might be that the battery has something wrong with the chip that tells its charge status to the PMU. If so, watch out for others going the same way.
At least I now have a new 13" MBP as well, and will save the 15" as a backup, or pass it on to my son when his first gen MBP dies off.

  • G5 either shuts down overnite or stays awake all night but loses cursor?

My G5 has started shutting itself down every night from sleep. Prior to this it was staying awake all night, but losing its cursor. Ran Disk warrior and TechTool Pro with no serious problems. It won't run Apple Hardware Test-holding C key won't load AHT. Can't figure out what the problem is. Have 139GB free on 152 GB machine. Any ideas?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

It's option key to boot AHT cd. You can run it, but firmware and OS updates makes the disk veriosn obsolete. So don't panick over a false positive.
I would backup files and c boot from the installer disk, select Disk Utility and Repair Disk/Permissions see if that works. Also disable hard drive sleep in System Preferences>Energy
If not repeat above and Erase w/Zero option and reinstall the OS. If your going to bother with all that, might as well make the jump to Tiger and iLife '06 (not included with Tiger)

Since 4.4 update, my phone will not stay awake while connected to power as before, the screen blacks out in 10min which is the setting I have the display on.

  • How do I get the watch to stay awake longer?

I noticed that when I am using the watch, it only stays awake for a matter of seconds before going dark.  For example, I was using the Stop Watch app and while trying to time something, the watch went dark after a few seconds.  This caused me to have to lower and raise my wrist again to access the app again.
How do I get the watch to stay awake longer when using some of the apps?
    Thanks!

I Think it varies with what app you're using, I just went on the message app & left it & it lasted for a good 10/15 secs before going dark plus like what DonCote said you can always just tap the screen to get the screen back up instead of flicking your wrist. Not sure whether apple will change this as they'll want to do anything to help battery performance...

  • How can I set my computer to stay awake while streaming an iTunes movie?

Whenever I play music with the visualizer, play music videos, movies, TV shows, my computer still dims and sleeps. I don't know how to set it so that my computer stays awake?

    system preferences > energy saver.
you can set computer sleep to never (or 3 hours) and set the display to sleep earlier.

  • HT201263 Where can I find the "stay Awake" function setting?

I am looking for the very nice function "stay awake". but cant find it in the settings.
    help?

doing Settings>General>Auto-Lock>Never, how long time it take the screen to go to go blank?

  • Energy settings set on save energy but computer stays awake

I have a MacBook Air 3.2 and have Snow Leopard operating system 10.6.8.
I have the energy settings set on go to sleep after 15 minutes. I have set everything to 15 minutes (computer sleep and display sleep).
But when I don't use the computer, eg. when I go to sleep, the computer stays awake.
I have cable internet (high speed) and I have that plugged into the USB modem.
Do you think that because I've checked "Wake for network access" that the computer doesn't go to sleep?
I don't understand why the display doesn't go to sleep. The light on the screen is as bright as ever all through the night though I am not using the computer.

Do you think that because I've checked "Wake for network access" that the computer doesn't go to sleep?
    Shut it off and see!
When all else fails try using PleaseSleep.

  • IMac 1.6Ghz wont stay awake...also Boeing 747 noise!

This 1.6Ghz iMac recently started shutting OFF when sleep time hit in the Energy Saver System Prefs. It would also shutdown if you use the sleep command.
I've tried resetting the SMU and using the Apple solution of plugging it in the back while holding the start button, but nothing works.
    Used DU also.
    Ideas?
Also whats with the Boeing 747 noise? Super loud fan noise. Vents are clear so why...?
    Perplexed Steve

Try resetting the PRAM. The 747 noise is the fans not being controlled by the SMU, it could mean the either your thermal paste has dried, a connection to the fan has failed, or your power supply unit is failing.

  • Library on an External Drive via Airport Extreme - STAY AWAKE!

Sorry for the cross-post, but this is related to both iTunes and the Airport Extreme.
I've gone around in circles on this for a few months now, but wanted to see if anyone had any new ideas. I have a 1TB drive attached to my Airport Extreme that holds my iTunes library on it. I have had some stability issues with the disk as follows, as well as a couple of nagging problems.
Once the disk is mounted and iTunes starts, the disk remains available as long as iTunes is playing music. If iTunes stops playing music but stays open, the disk will go to sleep and will become unavailable to Finder. About 50% of the time the disk can be remounted by selecting from the AE shared directory, but often the disk hangs and cannot be accessed any further. I have to either reboot the disk or even reboot the AE as well in order to get everything working again. I sometimes have the same issue with a secondary AE attached disk that is used for Time Machine backups, so I suspect that it is related to something in OSX that insists that external disks sleep in this manner. Overall, my experience with these AE-attached disks has been sketchy at best. They are fantastic when they work, but something in the mix is causing communication between the MacBook, the external disk, and the AE to just go haywire at times.
    Ideally, this would happen:
    1) All external disks would mount automatically on startup
    2) As long as iTunes was open (even if not playing), the disk would remain mounted and available.
    3) The disk(s) would only sleep and/or dismount if directly instructed to do so.
Any thoughts that the gurus have would be appreciated. Seems like I might be able to do some of this through scripting, but I am not sure where to start on something like that.
    Thanks in advance.

In addition to Bob's solution, I use the following Apple Script for mounting my attached HDD to the desktop without it opening. That is, it just shows up as an icon on the desktop.
    try
mount volume "afp://<basestation_name>.local/<disk_volumename>" as user name "<enter disk username>" with password "<enter disk password>"
    end try
I then run this script as an application from my user profile's Login Items pane. (ref: System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items)

  • Should I buy a new MBPr 15 or stay on iMac 2011?

The thing  is, that I am not really sure, should I buy this machine or not, because actually I am a film-maker and currently I have an iMac (2011), and looks like I will work in the field in the future. So I am considering of buying a base MacBook Pro Retina 15, which is with i7 2.7GHz, 16GB of memory, 512 flash storage + Intel HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5.
And here is my iMac tech specs: i7 3.4GHz, 8GB of memory, 1TB 7200rpm hard drive + AMD Radeon HD 6970M with 1024Mb.
Also, I am going do a lot of pretty heavy video-editing (Premiere, After Effects) on the notebook, because I am going to sell my iMac. Well, if buying the Macbook makes sense.
So the question is, will it make a big difference in speed of rendrering, overall quality of work progress, and editing itself. Also, I am interested in Photoshop, if you, guys, worked in photoshop (photographers or web-designers) on this machine please leave a reply about how it goes there, I mean, is there any lags or retina-display problems, because I am also planning to work in all of Adobe Software.
Also, sorry for my english, this is not my native language, and sorry if this topic is not in the right place. Peace!

You will find that the relative performance of the two units will be very similar.  see the attached bench test scores:
    http://browser.primatelabs.com/mac-benchmarks
Note that with the retina, your storage will be significantly less. Whether the resolution of the retina is worth the premium you have to decide.
Though I an not an Adobe user, I would think that the retina with SSD as well as 16 GB RAM should handle those applications without any difficulty.
    Ciao.

  • Intel iMac or stay with iMac G5 Power PC?

I am considering buying an Intel iMac. I currently have a Imac G5 with a Power PC processor. I use my computer for iMovies (over 300 gb's), iTunes (7000 tracks) and iPhoto (6500 photos). All of this is dual backed up on external Lacie drives as I would hate to lose any of it. I have also cloned my hard drive onto one of the Lacies's.
If I decide to take the plunge and switch to Intel can I expect to encounter any problems with any of these programmes. I am familiar with the Intel system emulator which will slow the running speed of some programmes but I am of the impression that iLife programmes are not affected.
I would be grateful to hear about any problems that may occur.
    Thank you.
    David.

    Hi David,
I too had a PPC G5 (1/2005) and pretty much use the same apps as you mentioned with the LaCie backup drive. I traded up to the 24" intel machine with 2GB RAM and the bigger graphics card. My G5 was backed up on the LaCie which was partitioned into two drives, one to backup the complete system (bootable) and one from my Home folder.
When I moved to the new machine I simply copied my applications folder from the system backup into the new applications folder and all my apps went over without a hiccup. I would avoid using the migration assistant as that caused a few problems. I can't remember exactly what they were as it was almost two months ago.
After that apps were over I did the same with my Home folder and then all my data was on the new machine.
As for the speed. It's night and day and in particular the noise level is about non-existent. Couldn't say that about my G5 which as extremely loud when you tasked the processor at anything over 40% capacity.
The experience was so good with the 24", I purchased a 17" for the kids and the process was again repeated with no problems.
Best of luck in your decision. From my perspective the Intel iMac's are awesome machines. PPC G5 doesn't even come close. Same software, but the speed and noise of this machine makes it soooo much more enjoyable.

  • Not Staying Awake After Scheduled Startup

    Hello
I imagine this question must have been asked before but I can't find reference to it.
I have my computer scheduled to automatically sleep at midnight and start up at 08:00. It goes to sleep on schedule but when I come to my computer some time after the scheduled start up time, it is asleep. It then wakes just fine if I press a key on the keyboard.
I looked at system.log and it contains the entries below at 08:00 (text in brackets are my edits to keep the log anonymous). This suggests to me that the computer is trying to start and either not succeeding or shutting down again.
Please could someone tell me how to fix it?
    Thanks

    Hi, Ian.
Your computer woke as expected and noted this at 08:00:08 (8 seconds past 08:00) in the log:
    Oct 17 08:00:08 <computername> kernel[0]: System Wake
There's nothing in the log snippet you provided to indicate the machine went back to sleep.
Check the settings in the System Preferences > Energy Saver > Sleep tab. If the Display or Computer sleep sliders are set to short time intervals, e.g. a few minutes, then either inactivity period may be triggered after it wakes from lack of activity.
For example, if you have Display Sleep set to 3 minutes and you come to the machine at 8:05, then the display would be asleep despite the machine having awoken at 8:00 since there was no activity between 08:00 and 08:03.
To rule out the possibility of corrupted preferences, try the following:
    1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
    2. Open the Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration folder.
    3. Trash the following two files therein:• com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    • com.apple.AutoWake.plist
You may be prompted for your Admin password when you trash these files.
The first file contains the settings specified in the Energy Saver preferences tabs, while the second contains the settings specified via the Schedule button in Energy Saver preferences. Note that the second file is only extant if you have used the Schedule to schedule startup, sleep, or shutdown.
    4. Empty the Trash.
    5. Launch System Preferences and reset the Energy Saver preferences accordingly.
    Good luck!
