Staying awake with the display closed

Is there any way to keep a Pismo from sleeping when you close the display? I've seen a post on that topic here before, but I can't find it now, and there doesn't seem to be any way using the power manager system preferences in OSX.

  • MacBook Pro won't stay awake with external display AND power connected

I've been using my MacBook Pro with an external 23" Apple display for several months, always with the lid closed and with no problems. Suddenly, I can no longer keep the MacBook awake when its lid is closed. *The AC power IS connected.* I plug in the display, close the lid, wake the system with my external keyboard, but then it will quickly go to sleep again after a few seconds. No matter what I've tried I get the same behavior.
Perhaps coincidence, perhaps not, I installed the Leopard graphics update a few weeks ago. Could this be a cause?

Apple did actually acknowledge this as a known issue with people running 10.5.2 with the graphics update, and are investigating it. There's some further discussion at this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1394449&tstart=0
Anyway, what worked for me was powering down, connecting my external display, keyboard, etc., powering up, and immediately closing the lid. It seems to behave better now, though I haven't rebooted since, although I have switched back and forth between running with the external display, and running without it, without any problems.

  • Working with the display closed

    Hi,
I am running a process that takes a long time. It is stand alone and just works for around one and a half hours. When I close the display to go home, the computer sleeps and stops the process. Then when it wakes up, the process fails. Is it possible to set the computer to don't sleep when the display is closed?
Thanks in advance for your advice,
    Guillermo

I have the same problem also.  Restarting isn't helping and the auto lock/unlock button is on.  Plus a couple of time when I turn it on it is asking if I want to power off.  That is when I push the button on the front to wake it up.  Not the power button on top.  I have an IPAd 2. Worked fine before the update.

  • Sets into sleep when closing le lid, even with the display connected

I have the problem, that when I close the lid of my MacBook, it goes to sleep mod. This even happens when I connect the display. Even following the steps on the Apple.com page, it still goes into sleep mode.
Please help me avoid this sleep mode problem, I want to use my display instead of my computers screen. (yes, I have a wireless keyboard and mouse, paired all of them)
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
You can't avoid it. This is the way it's supposed to work.
If you have the AC adapter plugged in, an external display plugged in and an external mouse and keyboard (USB or Bluetooth), you can WAKE the computer after it's gone to sleep with the lid closed. But it will go to sleep when you close it. This is detailed here:

  • Using the iBook with the cover closed

Can you hook up external monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc and use the iBook with the cover closed? I know that usually closing the cover puts it to sleep.

The keyboard is an important component of the cooling of the CPU. Excess heat dissipates through the keyboard. Closing the cover would cause damage to other components from the heat. You can run iTunes with the screen off if that helps. Do that in systems prefs>energy saver and set the screen to go off in three minutes (or one) and the CPU to stay on indefinetly.

  • My Logitech mouse interferes with the display.

Ever since updating to Mavericks several months ago my Logitech M225 wireless mouse will occasionally interfere with the display memory when coming out of sleep mode. This happens every few days and can only be cleared by restarting my MacBook Pro. If it comes out of sleep fine there is never a problem. The interference is in the form of columns of random bits distributed here and there across the display. Each movement of the mouse results in changing interference. I'm now at OS version OS X 10.9.4 (13E28). This happens when using an external monitor.

  • Can you play music with the laptop closed?

Is there a way play music with the Laptop closed? I have a MacBook Pro w/Retina display.

You'll either need to have a keyboard and monitor attached so you can wake the computer with the screen closed or use one of the third-party utilities that keeps the MBP from sleeping when you close the lid such as InsomniaX.
    Regards.

  • Using  MBP with with the lid closed

I have done some searching for tips on using the MBP with the lid closed and there is some conflicting information. I'm hoping people who use their Apple laptops in this way can help clarify a few things.
First, as I understand it, the MBP will operate with the lid closed if there is a connected power cord, mouse, keyboard, and external display. I plan to use mine with a Bluetooth mouse/keyboard. (More details from Apple can be found here.)
    These are my questions:
    1) I've heard people issue warnings about laptops overheating when running closed, but it seems Apple endorses using the MBP this way. Is heat really a problem, or are people just spreading misconceptions by predicting an early demise for a laptop used in this way?
    2) Can the MBP be turned on/off when closed, or only put to sleep? I want to keep my MBP on a shelf that makes it inconvenient to open every time I want to shut down or power up. I suspect putting it to sleep will be good enough, but if I can shut down and power up without opening the lid, that would be preferable.
    3) I've read that the MBP can be glitchy when waking from sleep in the closed-lid configuration. According to some people it sometimes won't wake up and requires at restart. Am I fooling myself into thinking sleep can replace shutting down?
    Thanks.

    1) As long as you don't place anything between the keyboard and screen, you should be fine. There have been worries about display damage due to heat rising up from the keyboard, but no substantiated reports of real damage occuring.
    2) You can obviously turn the MBP off while closed by choosing Apple > Shut Down; powering back on requires pressing the power button. Another option would be enabling the Wake on LAN feature in Energy Saver preferences.
    3) AFAIK, the problems are with deep sleep and occur regardless of whether the lid is closed or not. I've not had any problems waking my MBP from sleep, but I always shut it down for the night.

  • NVIDIA OpenGL driver lost connection with the display driver

    Alienware M14x Laptop
    Windows 7-pre 64-bit
    8gb ram
3gb Video: NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M
    Intel i7 2760QM
    AE CS4
AE keeps crashing. I get the following message while doing something as simple as scrubbing through the timeline, or changing opacity of a layer. in 1080p, I have a picture layer, a solid, some color corrections, and that's it. i just got this new computer and i have never had this problem on my old computer.
this message appears after AE crashes."The NVIDIA OpenGL driver lost connection with the display driver and is unable to continue. The application must close."
this message appears in the taskbar: "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered. Display driver NVIDIA Windows kernel Mode Driver, Version 267.21 stopped responding and has successfully recovered"
any ideas on how to stop AE from causing my display driver to stop working?
    Thanks, Ramzi Rebeiz

For anyone picking up this thread (it's probably too late for rrebeiz40 by now!) I have come across a simple but apparently very effective tip that has solved the 'OpenGL driver lost connection' issue for many people using various NVIDIA with various Adobe progs (incidentally a lot of these seem to crop up on Dell machines, especially Notebooks).
(It fixed my issue with Premiere Pro CS4 - GeForce GT 555M on Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit, Dell XPSL702X).
It's posted on http://forum-archive.developer.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=5331&st=40 (look for the last post, No 50) as follows:
THIS FIX APPEARS TO WORK...found on an Adobe forum
"This issue led me to this fix: go to NVIDIA Control Panel --> Manage 3D Settings --> Global Settings, and switch "Power Management Mode" to "Prefer Maximum Performance" (the default "Adaptive" setting seemed to be the culprit). And that's it! The key here is changing the "Global" setting, as my individual programs were already set to "Prefer Maximum Performance." I can cause the error to reoccur by changing back to "Adaptive."
Otherwise lots more ideas on this site: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Fix...Nvlddmkm-Error/
My PC has been running for 2 days now. I only put the top fix in for now. Feel happier I have more options if need be though.
