.ste files

I just set up dreamweaver 8 on a new machine. I moved all
data files there too. Dreamweavver doesn't know where the site
definition files are, and a search of the ond and new machines
yields zilch. Did the extention change in version 8?

  • Migration Woes of DW .ste Files To New Computer

I having having problems importing DW CS3 .ste files to a new computer.  I transferred all my websites files over to the new computer using the same file/folder structure as the old one.  I also Exported all the .ste files via DW's Site > Manage Sites into a folder on my old desktop which I then copied over to the desktop of the new computer.  And, I successfully installed DW on the new computer.
However, when I try to Import any of .ste files via DW Site > Manage Sites (menu is empty at this point in time), I am prompted to "choose local root folder for site (name here)". This last ("choose") step is not mentioned in the online DW help.  And, no matter what folder I choose (I've tried many, many ways), in the Manage Sites menu I have one site identified but the content in the Files Panel is just a list of all the .ste files, not that site's files and folders as I was exptecting.  Very confusing and frustrating.
Any suggestions on how I can resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

If you are using a Windows 7 machine (or perhaps it will also work in Vista) Try this:
Make sure that your site files exist on your computer in the correct location - for instance Inetpub/wwwroot/yoursitename/
Make sure that you have an image file in the folder.
    In Dreamweaver, open sites/manage sites/import
    Navigate to the ste file.
When asked for a local site folder, navigate to the folder and open it.
Select any folder within it (notes is fine) and click open.
When asked for an images folder, click on the images folder and open it.
Click on any folder within it (notes is fine) and click open.
This should then set up the site. Exit the file manager and you should be shown a list of files for your site.
I have just done this in the last few minutes with no problem.
If you do not select a folder within your site (rather than the site folder) you will not get the correct location. Its a windows 7 thing, not a Dreamweaver problem.

  • Location of .ste files on Mac OSX 10.5.6

I replaced my hard drive, and had some isses with the way my Adobe apps loaded. I cleaned out the Web Premium CS3 files and reloaded CS3.
I have backup files of my startup volume, but don't know where to look for the SITE DEFINITION FILES (.ste).
I have all of the SiteCache files which were separately protected and saved on an auxiliary drive, but I have been trying to recreate my SITE MANAGEMENT PROFILES for two days now, without success.
    Any help would be appreciated.

You can't do that. You either need to Import the sites from the .ste files that you originally exported, or if you didn't export the .ste files, you need to replace the Site Prefs file on your new installation with the one recovered from the hard disk backup.
If you didn't create .ste files yourself and don't have a backup of the Site Prefs file, you need to redefine all the sites manually.

  • CS3 .ste files won't import into CS5

I recently upgraded from CS3 <on XP> to CS5 <on Mac Snow Leopard.> I expected a learning curve, but I also expect that software works as specified.
My CS3 site definition files won't import. I followed the instructions in DW help to the letter:
Manage Sites---> Import--->browsed to .ste files, selected Choose, and nothing happens. The sites don't show up in the list in the Manage Sites dialog box. ARE THERE MISSING INSTRUCTIONS? IS THERE A PLUG-IN MISSING?
After I've tried to import them, the .ste files are then 'greyed out' from the list of files. It doesn't matter what source the .ste files come from: jumpdrive, email, etc.
Note:  This is a new, fresh & clean Snow Leopard install, and my files were transfered at the Apple Store. The CS5 install was just last week as well.
I have client sites to update. Please help!

Yes, I did export the .ste files from XP/CS3. I saved them to a jumpdrive, and also emailed them to my Macbook. I know some people don't read or follow instructions before they ask for help, but that's not the case.
This seems to be a CS5 issue in Mac Snow Leopard. Important note; I was able to import the .ste files to an XP machine running a demo version of CS5. I've moved site files before with CS, CS2, and CS3, on XP. Never had an issue with those flavors or that OS.
On my Mac, after I attempt to import the .ste files, they become 'greyed out'. All other file types (.html, etc.) also appear 'greyed out'. It seems like there's a missing step in the instructions?
Update:  I right-clicked the .ste files in my Downloads file, and chose 'Open with Dreamweaver'. THEN they imported successfully, and prompted me to choose the root folders. (If nobody answers the front door, knock on the back door!)
Thanks to all for your suggestions, but I think the problem is behind me. Long live the right click!

  • Import .ste files from DW CS 4 to DW CC?

When I try import .ste files from DW CS 4 to DW CC I get an error that says "this is not a valid site definition file. Cannot import."

I’m switching from a macPro running OSX 10.8 to a new macBoookPro running Mavericks. I have about 60 sites. Doing this manually will be a real test of my tolerance for tediousness.
Is it really my only choice?

  • Is site STE file DTD or XSD available?

Dreamweaver enables you to export your site definition into a
special file with a .ste extension. You can then share your site
definition with other developers by allowing them to import the
.ste file to recreate the site on their machines.
Do you know where the DTD or XSD specification for how the
    .ste file is structured?

The *.ste file is only meaningful to DW. But you can open one
    and look at
    its structure. It's a bog-standard XML file....

If you ever find this answer, it would be extremely useful to me right now.

  • FTP password in .ste file

I was curious as to why the password in the site definitions backup file is encrypted. The user name is the same but the password is a series of numbers and letters that have no bearing to the actual password...

    Hi Paevo,
That is done to loosely encrypt the passwords on disk for security purposes. It is mainly to be a deterrent to casual piracy.

  • Bridge bug with .ste files?

I have been having a problem recently, with Bridge crashing.  The issue has started in the past few weeks, after I downloaded some Adobe updates.  I have updated my video drivers and done everything else I can think of but I continued to have the problem.
    Any suggestions?

Bug, not likely,  but contaminated file, perhaps.  If  the crash happens with one folder, then purge the folder and let it rebuilt.  Also, compact cache to get rid of orphans and reduce cache size.
A crash can be more likely if you change folders before the cache is finished building (spinning arrow on bottom).
Other options, defrag the hard dirve, purge all cache, reset preferences if none of this works.

  • How to transfer site files from one computer to another?

I've got a couple sites archived on my MacBook Pro that I'd like to move over to my iMac. Is there an easy way to do this that will retain all the site settings and so that the sites will show up in the site files window as I'm used to working with? (CS4)

Yep, super easy too if you still have DW on the machine you are transferring from.
    1. Open DW on that machine, go to Site > Manage Sites > Export to create a .ste file for the site.
    2. Make a copy of the entire site folder for the site and put it on your new machine along with a copy of the .ste file.
    3. In DW on the new machine go to Site > Manage Sites > Import to import the .ste file
3a. You "may" need to relink the site's root folder under Site > Manage Sites > Edit to point to the newly copied site folder on the new machine, but all the FTP info will be there from the import

  • Folders in Files Panel won't stay collapsed

There are 2 folders in my Files Panel which won't stay collapsed.  When I open Dreamweaver, they are expanded.  If I click the arrow next to them a few times they will eventually collapse, but then as soon as I open any other file or folder they re-expand themselves.  This first started back when I was using Dreamweaver CS5 with one folder which refused to collapse. A year later, I had updated to Dreamweaver CS6, and now had 2 folders which wouldn't stay collapsed. This morning I updated to Dreamweaver CC, and the same 2 folders still won't stay collapsed!
I searched the forum and found people with the same issue going back to 2007, but have yet to find any solution.  A few people recommended editing the Windows Registry - but I'm using the Mac version.  Several people said that they had some luck completely deleting the site settings and re-creating it - but that seems a bit extreme, plus several people said that it just started happening again later with another folder!
Does anyone have a permanent solution??
Here are a few of the other posts regarding this issue:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4418090
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/975917
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3596836
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/938616
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/809937
Also - just as an FYI.  If I rename the folder, it stops happening.  I can close and restart Dreamweaver and it stays collapsed. But, as soon as I rename the folder back - even if I do so after closing and reopening the program - it starts doing it again!!
Not sure if this is related either - but I saw in someone else's post that setting Related Files to Automatically, instead of Manual, fixed the problem.  I did try this, to no avail.  I even tried many times to turn off Related Files (by unchecking the Enable Related Files box in Preferences) but it keeps re-enabling itself!

As Jon Suggested , try rebuilding the site Cache
Allow me to Quote another DW user
First let me add here that I did find that when I upgraded to the new Creative Cloud version of DW and it imported my 12.0 site settings, the problem followed those settings into the 13.0 version.
Im on a Mac so these instructions would need to be taylored to the PC in regards to the location of the file referenced. And I am not sure if it's even the same file on the PC. So I can only speak for my experience on the Mac.
I've fixed my 12.0 version and my 13.0 version this way.
It was a corrupted "Site Prefs" file. I tried to fix it, but the entries where so mixed up that there was no way that was going to work. So I deleted the "Site Prefs" file and let DW recreate it.
In order to recreate the Site Prefs file, it meant loosing all of my site settings.
    To make things less painful...
Open DW and go to Manage Sites. Select all sites and do an export of all .ste files, with passwords and user names, into a temperary folder and close DW.
Now find file folder called "12.0" or 13.0" in the Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/12.0 (13.0 for the cloud version)/Sites/ and rename it to "12.0_old" or whatever. (Note: you may need to Option-click the Go Menu in the Finder in order to get the Library choice to appear).
Reopen DW and it will recreate a new blank "Site Prefs" file. Go to "Manage Sites..." and click on "Import Site". Select all of the .ste files and import them.
DW will update the site's cache the first time you open each site and it might also ask you to give permission to access the password stored in you keychain. Choose "Always Allow" for each one.
That's it. Now my corrupted folder doesn't pop open every time I click on another folder.
    Mac OS 10.7.5
    DW CS6 (12.0 build 5861) &/or DW CC (13.0 build 6391)
As I said, this worked great for me. But use these steps at your own discretion.

  • How do I manually recreate the site definition (.ste) for an existing site?

My iMac hard drive recently failed and had to be replaced.
Though I had backed up my web site files, I don't have a backup of the site's Site Management (*.ste) file.
Thus, I'm unable to manage this site in Dreamweaver (reinstalled on the new hard drive).
In some forum threads, there are references to "manually recreating the site definition." How do I do this?
    Thanks!

    paintwlight wrote the following:
Does Putting the site to the remote server constitute an Export, whereby a .ste file would have been created during the Put process and, therefore, exist on the remote server?
No. Hit F1 and search for Export.
If so, I assume that if I copy the .ste file currently on the remote server and save it locally (into Library:Application Support:Adobe:Common:9:Sites:Site Prefs), all will be well and Dreamweaver will once again be able to manage the site.
DW can manage the site after you have defined the site as mentioned
earlier. It does not need the .ste files at all. Those are created by
the user via the Export feature and are not used by DW itself.
Gosh, I wish I would have known about the .ste file before my hard drive died. This seems like way too much responsibility to put on one teeny tiny little file -- especially one that's not kept with the rest of the web site files.
The .ste file contains only the paths to your site and the login
information - if you choose to include that information. It does not
contain any of the actual files. DW does not act as a backup or archival
program. You need to keep backups of your entire site (including source
files used to create the site, such as Photoshop/Fireworks layered
images, Flash .fla files, etc...) as well as backups of the .ste files.

  • Template Files not Updating

    Hey guys,
My laptop was infected with a virus last week and I had to get it rebuilt. I have since lost my installed version of Dreamweaver MX and I can't find my serial code so at the moment I have installed the trial version of the latest Dreamweaver CS5.
I have a few template files for one of my sites that I do and I have tried to update it but when I do the child files (is that the right term) are not being updated with the changes. I have a few editable regions but the changes I am making are not being made to the editable regions.
Can anyone advise me how to get the template file changes on to the child files?
    Thanks

    Try this -
    1.  Open DW's Site manager, select the site, and click the EXPORT button to export a FULL site definition (make sure you both select the top radio button in the ensuing dialog, and take note of where you save the exported *.ste file).
    2.  With the site's name still selected in Site manager, click the REMOVE button to remove this site's definition from DW.
    3.  Then click the IMPORT button to import the site definition you just removed.  This will force DW to rebuild the site cache and recreate the list of template child pages associations.
Your updates should now propagate to the child pages.  Do they?
