"stealing" music

I just want to get some clarification on the term "stolen music".
It is my understanding that copying CD's to your computer and then to your ipod is in fact illegal.
Obviously downloading music is considered illegal.
So really the only legal way to get songs on your ipod is actually purchase them online through ipod shop or bigpond or something similar.
discuss....

Use your own judgement. Considering your sig and the fact you even asked, your judgement seems pretty good, even a bit too cautious.
In the fine line of legality regarding "stealing music", downloading music you haven't paid for is definitely on the other side.
Copying CDs to your computer and then to your iPod is definitely on the good side. You have paid for it, you aren't giving it away on the Internet, you are selling it, you (and your family and friends) can listen to it however you want.
The record companies only care about profit. Their goal is to have you pay each time to listen to copyrighted sound. If you play those sounds for others, you should pay more for such a performance. Take a stand for what is "right" and "fair". Laws can and do change. If listening to music you purchased on your iPod is illegal in your country. That is an unfair law that needs to be scrapped. If you are paying for something, and doing what is right, demand to be treated fairly and with respect and to get your money's worth.
And remember, you are on a PC. When you insert any CD, always hold down the "shift" key. Otherwise, the CD can install potentially dangerous software on your machine that could leave you vulnerable to viruses and spyware.

I have an iPhone 5s. Just updated from my 5. My husband just got an iPhone. I purchased music over the last year.

Also my dads got over a thousand songs on his iTunes account. Is there a way to share? I get the whole stealing music stuff but this is purchased music I'm talking about. He paid for albums of music. Mine are random songs and a few albums.
And last. I have CDs I purchased. How do I put them onto my iTunes account. My dad set it up for me two years ago (3 phones ago) n I'm not

  • How can I save my music from iPod to a new computer?

Probably this problem got solved already in the past but I could not find help till now. I still use my iPod 30gb Classic from 2005 but the computer with which I made the syncs is broken and I got myself a new one. I wanted to save the music files from iPod to the new computer with iTunes so that I have another backup if this iPod should get broke in the future. But I could not backup the music files, somehow. Anyone has help? Thanks in advance.

How it was originally designed by Apple is you store your music in iTunes on a Mac or a PC. you back up your computer. you add to your library through the computer. you then sync to ipod classic. it was never intended to move music back the other way unless you purchased the music from iTunes store.
If your compuetr breaks you restore iTunes library from computer backup.
in many cases music is reduced in size and quality to 128kbps on sync so backwards sync would lose library quality.
finally, it avoids people illegally sharing music, or stealing music from lost or stolen ipods.
to backwards sync you will need to either get into the risky business of third party software, or find a PC running Linux and Rhythmbox and ask again.  I probably said too much.

  • A family member gave our kids their old iphone with music already loaded for them.  How do we add the music to our library? It won't transfer purchases from the phone and if I sync it, the music is erased.  Can someone walk me through this?

No one here will help you violate iTunes terms of service or steal music.

  • I can no longer manually add music to my iPhone from iTunes; what happened?

Recently I have been unable to add new music to my iPhone from iTunes. I used to be able to just select the songs I wanted, then drag and drop them onto to the phone by hovering over the iPhone icon. Now I get a crossed-out circle icon when I try to do this. Why is this happening, and how can I work around it? I'm pretty frustrated, as you can imagine!

Thanks for the judgmental response, Dave. My favorite part was where you told me how to manage the space on my computer. My second favorite part was when you accused me to stealing music.
I have only synced my iPhone with one computer and its iTunes library. I download music legally to that computer, from mixtape sites, Bandcamp, Amazon and---GASP---other none iTunes sites, load it onto my iPhone, then delete some of it, because I don't listen to music on my computer. I listen to it on a device I purchased to play it. That device is called an iPhone. It's supposed to play mp3s.
    Have I blown your mind?
But if I am hearing you right, you are telling me the iPhone is literally the only mp3 player in existence that doesn't and shouldn't have the basic functionality to have new mp3s loaded to it from a single authorized computer. That I should be happy now that I cannot load new music onto it, and I should just live with the music that I have already loaded, since I can't load anymore.
And that I should be happy that this basic functionality that, until the most recent software update, I have always had has magically disappeared.
How foolish it was of me to be upset about this! Thank you for showing me the light, Dave.

  • Music from another ipod to my itunes/computer via the ipod.

Is there anyway i can transfer music of my friends ipod onto my computer but just plugging there nano into my computer? Tried dragging files over and doesn't work...is this just the way it is or is there some trick to it?

The trick is to get legal copies of the music for yourself, and not steal it.
Asking how to steal music violates the terms of use for these boards, as does anyone who helps you do it.

  • Transfering music from my iPod to my itunes on a new computer

a few days ago, the power surged and destroyed my computer, and I just got a new one. Today I installed iTunes to my new computer, and when I went to transfer the music from my iPod to my new computer, I discovered that I couldn't do this. I checked the support section of iTunes for help, and only found information on transfering music while the old computer is still accessable. Since my old computer is dead, I can't access it to follow any of the steps of the guide, or disconnect my iPod from the iTunes on my old computer. Does anyone know how I can sync my iPod with my new computer and sync the songs from my iPod onto my new computer (rather than erase all my songs which appears to be just about the only option my iTunes is offering right now)?

How about this, I have an iPod that is synced to my friends computer. I finally got my own computer and want to transfer everything to this computer so I can add new stuff, but I want to leave my library at my friends house so I have a backup. So my question is, if I add stuff to my library on my computer and I reconnect it to my friends computer, will I lose the stuff I added from my computer?
If you click "erase & sync" if prompted, yes.
And also, do I need to go to my frineds house with my computer to transfer the non-purchased stuff?
    Don't steal music...
The reason I want to know is I dont want to lose the stuff I have added from my computer when I connect to my friends computer. Any help is much appreciated!! Thanks in advance! =)

  • ITunes music card problem

I bought a gift card from Coles in Australia (whre I live). I logged on to my iTunes and tried to redeem my card but it said the gift card was for Oz and not compatible with the US store. I thought I was in the Oz store but obviously not. How do I get in? I gather one can access a music store just with an address and a gift certificate.
    Help anyone?

  • Music not in iTunes or iPod help please!!

I am currently on Windows Vista, but my old computer was XP. The hard drive of my old computer got so full I had to delete all my music to free up some space. I thought I had backed it up on disc use on my iPod, but later I found out that somehow that hadn't happened.
So I figured I could just transfer everything to my new computer from my ipod. I hooked it up, told it not to erase anything, enabled manual use, all that good stuff, and itunes locks up. So I restarted my computer and replugged the ipod, but rater than ask me the same questions itunes just erased everthing on my ipod! The only things in itunes and my ipod are purchases! Most of my songs were from CDs, a lot of which I don't own or have since lost. I had over a thousand songs and now I have 96.
Is there anyway to recover songs off your ipod once itunes decides to delete them or am I just screwed? I didn't even get a chance to download a program that could have transfered my music from my ipod. Please help me!

*The hard drive of my old computer got so full I had to delete all my music to free up some space.*
You really painted yourself into a corner. The better solution would have been to purchase an external drive. I've seen 290G units for less than US$100. The iPod should NEVER be the prime storage device.
*I thought I had backed it up on disc use on my iPod...*
You've got it backwards. The computer's hard drive backs up the iPod. Further, the computer's hard drive should be backed up to CDs/DVDs or yet another external hard drive but certainly not the iPod as the iPod backs up NOTHING.
*Most of my songs were from CDs, a lot of which I don't own...*
Well, now that I realize that you're stealing music, I no longer have any sympathy for you.

  • Bought new iPod (#5 in family)  but now not all music xfering that used to

Yep, purchased 5th iPod. However, some of the songs my daughter's purchased isn't showing up on mine or their iPod's, and we get the msg that I can't have more than 5 accounts. Okay, but what exactly does this mean? I don't have multiple names in my iTunes Music folder. Please tell me why this is a rule for people who don't try to steal music, and are there any exceptions since I spend my hard earned money and reward my family members with their own (not to mention 'word of mouth' promoting I do for Apple...) I have one pc at home. I did load my iTunes at work, but I don't really use it there, so I'll deauthorize it tomorrow. One other thing, I loaded my mom's iPod on my pc to start out, because she needed me to help her with it the day she bought it, and she lives 5 hours away, so who wouldn't help their mom? But, I've spent a lot of money on iTunes music, and I can't listen to some of it until this thing gets figured out... What up? And how can this get worked out to my satisfaction (please)? Thanks, ahead of time! KC

Sorry I can't answer your questions, but I can recommend the iTunes support site as an excellent resource:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/
iTunes' built-in Help menu might also be able to answer some of your questions.

  • Can you update a 5th generation with music from a 4th generation itunes

I know it sounds stupid, but i lost all my music on my previous 60g ipod photo, no backups etc. A friend (who has a 4th generation ipod photo) was trying to update my ipod with his music, he came up with error messages, "not supported by firewire" etc. He has a MAC pc.
Can i do something about it?

The answer of course is YES. But I do not suggest you to do it, as updating your iPod with some one's iTunes = stealing music - a copyright issue.

  • Can't download music b/c saying my ipod is linked to another itunes library

does anyone know how i can bypass this without having to completely delete all of my songs already on my ipod?

I am not stealing music. I do not own a computer *******. So whenever I want to upload music, I have to borrow a friend's computer to get it to itunes. Don't be so quick to judge.
I mean you could stop trying to steal music and then
you won't run into this problem.
