Stealth mode and firewall logging problems to be resolved please.

I am running OS X v10.6.8 and am having difficulty setting stealth mode. System Preferences shows stealth mode to be switched on, but System Profiler shows it to be off, no matter how many times I set it and shut down/restart. System profiler also shows firewall logging to be switched off, but there is no facility within the Security/Firewall section of System Preferences to switch it on.

I think the answer to this is if you have "Block all incoming connections" checked, then "Enable stealth mode" in Sys Prefs is checked but greyed out. Mine is set up that way and I'm seeing, like you, that Stealth Mode is off in System Profiler>Network>Firewall. If you have "Block all incoming" checked, then activating Stealth Mode becomes moot.
I can only get it undimmed if I uncheck Block all incoming.

Stealth Mode just means that the computer will not respond to a "ping" or similar network enquiries. This means that anyone trying to communicate with your computer will not receive any reply.
It will not harm your computer to turn it on, but it may adversely affect any networking programs which you use. I would turn the firewall on, but leave Stealth Mode off unless you really know you need it.

Windows Server 2008 and Firewall Logging

Our Windows server 2008 R2 domain controller does not appear to be logging anything into the windows firewall log: c:\windows\system32\logfiles\firewall\pfirewall.log. The file is always blank. Every 2003 server and 2008 R2 non-dc work fine.
I'm a little stumped. The firewalls are configured via GPO's and appear to be applied ok.
I compared the 2003 and 2008 configuration and did notice one discrepancy:
The 2003 windows firewall service runs as the local system account. It's effective permissions to the pfirewall.log file is "full control"
However, the 2008 firewall service runs as "LOCAL SERVICE". This account has read-only permissions to the pfirewall.log file.
I haven't changed anything as this is a production server. I was hoping for some guidance before I start changing default settings. Any ideas why the pfirewall.log file is always blank?

Generally, C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\Firewall\firewall.log has the following permission settings:
NT SERVICE\MpsSvc:(F)
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(F)
BUILTIN\Administrators:(F)
BUILTIN\Network Configuration Operators:(F)
Please make sure MPSSvc (Windows Firewall service) has Full Control on this file.

This worked for me on a 2008 R2 DC that had somehow dropped the MpsSvc account off the Permissions list. In my case the pfirewall.log file wasn't even being created, so I had to modify permissions for the "%systemroot%\System32\LogFiles\Firewall"
folder.
Adding the MpsSvc account can be tricky if you're not familiar with where to look. Here are some supplemental instructions that might prove useful to those like myself who might not do this type of thing every day. Remember that these instructions for for
a 2008 R2 Domain Controller.
Open the "%systemroot%\System32\LogFiles\Firewall" folder. If necessary, "Click Continue to permanently get access to this folder."
Right-click the empty space in the Firewall folder and click Properties.
Go to the Security tab and click the Edit button.
In the "Permissions for Firewall" window, click the Add
button. The next step is where it gets tricky.
Click the Object Types button and in the window that opens, make sure the
Service Accounts box is checked. Click OK.
Now click the Locations button. In the window that opens, make sure you change the default selection from the domain name to your Domain Controller's hostname (e.g. DC01).
Click OK.
In the object names text field, type "NT SERVICE\MpsSvc". If you were to simply enter "MpsSvc" it wouldn't work. This is not case sensitive, but the context of your entry is very specific.
Click Check Names and your entry should automatically change to an underlined "MpsSvc" value.
Click OK.
Back on the "Permissions for Firewall" window, you can give MpsSvc
Full Control of the Firewall folder, then click OK.
You'll see a warning about changing permission settings on system folders. Read it, and if you accept the risk, click
Yes. (Otherwise click No and enjoy your non-existent firewall logs.)
Click OK again to save your changes and close the
Firewall Properties window.
You may have to restart the Windows Firewall service before the firewall log file will appear.
You should also run a "gpupdate" just to make sure your settings are permanent and aren't being overridden by a GPO somewhere out there in Active Directory.

My iPad 2 is Stuck in DFU (Recovery) Mode and I can't Restore it! PLEASE HELP!

Let me start off saying thanks for reading this and hopefully someone on here can help me out! So my problem is I had left my iPad at my vacation house for quite sometime and I just got it back today. I have many different passcodes (one for my iPhone, one for my iPod and one for my iPad) and I had forgotten what it was for my iPad. I tried many different ones but I just kept disabeling my iPad for hours and hours. I know it was dumb of me for not writing it down somewhere, but lesson learned. Anyways, I decided to put my iPad into DFU Mode so I could try to restore it. Once I placed it into recovery mode, I hit restore on my Mac and everything was going great until this messaged popped up:
I have done tons of searching online to see how to fix this but all the ways have not worked. This is mostly because in my hosts folder, I don't have any errors.
Now I am stuck and I have no idea what to do. My iPad will not turn on since it's in DFU mode and I am not able to resotre it so I really need help! If someone could help me, I would really appreciate it. I know it was dumb to set it into DFU mode but it was my last resort and I know not to do it again. If you know anyone that coiuld help with this problem, please have them answer this because I really need help as soon as possible, I apologize for sounding desperate. Are you running modified software on your phone? This error seems to be common if the firmware has been modified and you're trying to restore the phone again.

HT201263 iPod touch 4th gen is stuck in recovery mode and won't restore with iTunes. Please Help!

I had jailbroken my ipod touch then decided it didnt do much of anything, so I decided to restore my ipod. But itunes didnt finish the restore and left me in recovery mode. Now it says iTunes has detected an ipod in recovery mod, but when I try to restore it, it says something like could not connect to apple restore firm and I'm back to square one.

I have a dabatabase running in archive log mode, recently changed, I have 5 redo log groups and one of them (the current one) shows in the v$log view, that ARC: NO, I mean, no archiving. All redo logs except it shows ARC:Yes
What does it mean?
Am I going to have problems with this redo log file?

If you do describe on v$log, you'll find that the full column name is Archived (meaning is it archived yet?).
You could try alter system switch logfile and then check v$log again a few times after.

WAE 512 and transaction logs problem

I have a WAE 512 with ACNS 5.5.1b7 and I'm not able to export archived logs correctly. I tried to configure the WAE as below:
transaction-logs enable
transaction-logs archive interval every-day at 23:00
transaction-logs export enable
transaction-logs export interval every-day at 23:30
transaction-logs export ftp-server 10.253.8.125 cache **** .
and the WAE exported only one file of about 9 MB even if the files was stored on the WAE as you can see from the output:

I made a test and I configured the archiveng every hour from 12:00 to 15:00 and the export at 15:10, the file trasnferred by the WAE was only three one of 12:00 the other of 13:00 and 14:00 the 15:00 has been missed.
What can I do?

Hi Davide,
You seem to be missing the path on the FTP server; which goes on the export command.
Disable transaction logs, then remove the export command and then add it again like this: transaction-logs export ftp-server 10.253.8.125 cache **** / ; after that enable transaction logs again and test it.

Was always working and today I get a message that it can not connect to the internet. Internet Exployer works fine. So, I tried uninstalling the program and reinstalled. Still did not work. check out the proxy and firewall no problems there.

I get a message can not connect to the internet when trying to open Mozzila Firefox. It was working fine until my internet service went down. Once back up it was not working. I have tried installing and uninstalling the browser. I have looked at the firewall and proxy on my computer. Still not working Internet Exployer works fine. Deleted all cookies also.

Did you check your security software (firewall)?
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you about that, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox.

Promiscuous mode and "Overlook-Fing" problems

Anyone else having problems setting their en0 to promisc? I'm fighting with trying to get fing to work right but it's only seeing my own computer. I'm pretty sure it's because I can't seem to be able set my ethernet card to promisc, but that seems to be broken since my upgrade to SL.
Any help out there?

You are right that multicast is only meant to work for a specific range of addresses, but the address you mention looks more like a MAC address than an IP address. IPv6 would use up to eight groups of 4 character hex numbers.
The correct IPv4 address range for multicast group addresses is 224.0.0.0 to 239.255.255.255 or FF00::/8 for IPv6. The LabVIEW multicast VIs adhere strictly to that range as far as I could find (but LabVIEW doesn't support IPv6).
I find the requirement to manipulate the MAC address to make an interface multicast capable a very strange thing. The MAC address is meant to stay fixed (although there exist tools for most NIC manufactureres to change their MAC address).
As to what Wireshark does with a NIC, not much really! :-)
It's the underlaying PCAP driver that Wireshark uses that does all kinds of complicated things to the NIC in order to set it into promiscious mode. That may as well have a side effect on the TCP/IP stack in how to treat multicast packets.

AppleTV and Firewall - Streaming Problem

Hi All
I currently have 2 ATV1s which are both linked to iTunes running on a Server (Windows 2008 R2) via Streaming rather than Syncing. I have no issues with the connection until I enable the Fire Wall.
I have ebaled the following Ports TCP 123, 3689, 80, 443 and 53 with also UDP 5353. All are set to bidirectional. These were gleaned from the following support article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2463. I am also looking down the list of "Well known TCP and UDP ports used by Apple software", but as yet can see nothing obvious.
With these ports open the AppleTVs are seen by iTunes and they can also see the shared library. This issue happens when I connect the AppleTV to the library, it starts to load the library and the drops the connection. Occationally it does manage to load the "directory" but then will drop out after a few minutes. When the ATV drops the connection on iTunes it is still showing as a Device. So it looks like the basic connectivity is in place, just missing a little part of the puzzle.
Without the FW in place everything works OK.
Is there any other PORT I need to enable? I would not really like to run a server without a FW in place even though it is behind a NAT router.
Any help would be appreciated.

OK done a little more digging, set up a port monitor to look at connections.
As well as the ports listed above iTunes also appear to talk on another couple of ranges, tcp 57345-57370 and tcp 57418-57445. These are obviously dynamic ports and at the moment I have opened up the range tcp 57300-57500 and all apears well.
I would like to narrow the port range if possible and I will keep people updated on my findings.
At present though open tcp 57300-57500 appears to have resolved the issue.

Ipad was forced into Recovery Mode and I can't get out. Please help me!

Hi all. I'm dealing with a problem and could really use some help. I recently updated my Ipad to ios 4 with no problems and was enjoying it greatly. Afterward, I loaded Pages and Atomic Browser from the app store.
Anyway, I was surfing the net on Atomic Browser and then turned the ipad off momentarily to grab something from the kitchen. When I came back, the Ipad would not start.
I'd push the power button but nothing. Push and hold the power button. Nothing. Push and hold the home button. Nothing.
After many attempts, I decided to push the home screen button with the power button to force a reboot. I did this once a few months ago, and it just restarted my ipad fine. But this was before i updated to ios 4.
After doing this, it gave me the recovery mode screen with the pic of the usb cable pointing to the itunes logo. It has never done that before.
I don't want to reformat my ipad, i just wanted to turn it back on. I tried to exit recovery mode by holding the power button and home screen again, but it just keeps me stuck there. Nothing I do can get me out.
I don't want to reset the ipad and restore a back-up because I will lose some valuable pages documents I created recently.
Can any one help me?

The same thing happened to me. After the big update, I also experienced exactly what you described. I ended up restoring the ipad a number of times.
The first few times, I restored from a back-up. The last few times I have restored the ipad as new. It would work the next few times I turned the machine on, and around the third time, it would lapse back into the recovery mode, with
the image of the serial cord connecting to an i-tunes logo on its desktop. This morning, I restored the ipad as new, but only allowed the apps manufactured by Apple to be synced back onto the ipad. I have powered it back on about three times, and so far, so good. I am waiting to see what happens the next few times I turn the machine on.
I had a very helpful senior Apple express advisor help me on Sunday to do the restore as a new ipad procedure. He said that if that did not work, the next step was having it serviced. He also mentioned that often the third party apps have problems due to getting corrupt and this often happens after a major update. That is why I thought i'd try and see what would happen if I only synced the Apple apps back onto the ipad.
It is not good though if I can't put third party applications on it without having the problem of lapsing into recovery mode, so I may have to get it serviced. I am wondering how many others have had this problem after the big update last week? Also, has anyone who was an early purchaser and got the flat-rate unlimited data plan subscription from AT&T, had to have their ipad replaced? Was there a problem with AT& T still allowing you to continue your special subscription plan?

When I try to restore my iPhone 3GS I get an error that says "unknown error (-1)." My iPhone is in recovery mode and I can't use it! PLEASE HELP!

Before this it randomly said "your Phone can no longer send or recieve messages. Please restore to reactivate." Then, instead of restoring it, I restarted it. When I turned it back on it said "activation required." So then I tried to restore it and at the last step "restoring firmware" it freezes and gives me the error code (-1)!
