Steam games on a Macbook

I'm brand new to Mac and I wanted to play Left4dead but I was wondering if it was possible with my Macbook OS X 10.5.6 and how exactly do I go about doing it? If I use Crossover games, is that a better option, less risk of getting a Windows virus or am I better off using a windows operating system with boot camp or parallels to play windows games?

Windows games will always run better in a native windows environment, so bootcamp will always be faster. However, crossover provides everything that the game needs so it will run in the Mac environment without having to have Windows loaded behind it. Because of this it's the second best alternative. Running Parallels or VMware is not that great for games (even though it can be done) because having two operating systems as well as a virtualization program running behind the game will take up system resources. Additionally, most VM solutions do not have great video acceleration yet, and as such will run 3d programs slowly, if at all. For simple games it wont matter, but anything that's at all demanding of the hardware will struggle in virtualization environments. They're working on improving this, but for now VM solutions arent too viable an option for gamers.
If you do not want to partition your drive and install windows, and have to reboot your system every time you want to play Left4Dead, I'd recommend going with the Crossover option. It's not as fast as the windows version because there is some translation and whatnot going on, but it is much more convenient than bootcamp.

As eww said, that computer isn't specifically made for gaming. To get advanced graphics in a game, your computer needs what is called a "discrete" graphics processor, or GPU. This means a seperate chip that processes graphics. In Apple laptops, these are only found in the 15" and 17" MacBook Pro. It is not common to find these in laptops in general that are not expensive and high-end. What you have in yours is an "on-board" or "integrated" GPU. This means that graphics processing is done by a small portion of your main processor (the Intel i5 board). This takes away a portion of primary prossessing and dedicates it to graphics. This works perfectly find in most scenarios, but video rendering, gaming, and 3-D graphics tend to suffer. Most high-end, modern games require discrete GPUs to run at full quality these days.
As far as running Windows 7 and Mac OS both, yes you absolutely can. If you install Windows 7 via Bootcamp (this would require you to have a Windows 7 CD), when you turn on your computer it will default to opening up in Mac OS. But if you hold down the Option key (bottom of the keyboard next to the Command button) while the computer is booting up, it will ask you if you want to open Windows or Mac OS.

GE620DX - new Nvidia driver breaks steam games

Hi,
Yesterday I upgraded the graphics driver on my GE620DX to the one just released (285.98) downloaded from here:

After doing this all my Steam games that are configured to use the NV graphics card would fail to start with an 'error code 51' message appearing. Switching them back to integrated graphics allowed them to run. This didn't seem to happen with non Steam games as I was able to run WoW, which is set to run on the nvidia card.
I put the previous driver back (269.13) and this problem stopped happening so I'm pretty sure there's something wrong with the new drivers or the way Steam interacts with them.

Settings prog is bugged? How? It's to early to check everything but I could sucessfully run nvidia-settings and for example add a shadow to mouse cursor :-) I don't use it to restore the settings and I don't think it's very useful at all except maybe for gamers so it's not a big deal.
As I said I'm not using twinview too - I'm running tv-out but as a second screen (standard xfree way to do this). The lower resolution is not a problem then. But people who are using twinview for their own reasons (like external monitors connected to notebooks, cloning crt on the tv, etc. etc.) should consider staying with the older drivers for some time. Maybe it's a bug and nvidia will release a new driver with 1024x768 on the tv enabled again? - That's just a warning and I suggest to backup your older nvidia arch package if someone is using it.

[Solved] All Steam games have low FPS

Hello Archers!
I have recently switched back to Arch a few weeks ago and did not have these issues. However, I did a reinstall due to my own f**kup (it was faster to reinstall) a couple days ago and since then I have had terrible performance with Steam games no matter if I set them to low settings and low resolution or in windowed mode. The only thing I have done different from that install versus this one is I installed KDE instead of Gnome. This issue happens with all games I have and a list of most played are below. I am using the Open ATI driver due to the FGLRX driver not wanting to use both of my monitors at once. Has anyone had this issue before? I am going to look through the Gnome packages and see if there are any graphics related packages that I may try to install.

I can't seem to activate any of my app games on my macbook. They show the icons but I can't activate??? Help!

You don't. They only work on iOS devices. Some games in the iTunes store may also have web-based counterparts or full blown PC versions.

[SOLVED] Download speed is slow while playing certain Steam games

This is a weird one: When playing Steam games my download speed (everywhere) drops to a fraction of what it should be (roughly 1/10th). My upload speed is unaffected.
I don't know how long this has been the case but I think it's fairly recent since when playing games I often tab out and do stuff on the net. I would've noticed.
This doesn't happen with Portal 2, Civ V, Guacamelee or Xcom but does happen with Rochard, Steamworks Dig, Gateways (2d puzzle platformer) and Awesomenauts. I was looking for a pattern but I fail to see one.
To be clear about the problem: If I start one of those games and tab out my download speed is 1/10th what it should be. If I exit the game my download speed returns to normal instantly.
I've checked for obvious stuff like Steam downloading in the background (it's not and nor is anything else - no unusual network activity at all). I've checked for mere coincidence - signal dropping/interference and so on and that seems not to be it either. It's also far too consistent and, as I say, upload is unaffected for some reason.
I don't even know what info to give with this one or how to begin tracking it down so any advice will be received gratefully.
I'm running Arch 64bit, all up to date.

Which I believe is using the rt61pci module.

Ok, well, I *think* I've sort of solved it:
I went through various wifi channels and found that the degree to which my download speed was reduced varied depending on the wifi channel I was on. So I left a game running and watched the download speed and the speed of my CPU and GPU as they clocked up/down and it seems that one of them is managing to interfere with the wifi signal. Or at least that's my best guess. High wifi channel numbers seem to be affected least (significantly so) so ... yeah.
I don't know if this makes sense technically (and no idea how I've never encountered it before) but... that's my guess.

Launchpad deletion question mark on steam games and other apps

Hello, when in launchpad some icons if double clicked have a question mark that appears than if you hold them down the jiggle and the black x appears unlike before you double clicked it what does this mean? As an example I created a desktop shorcut for a steam game and put the icon in launchpad than I dumped the icon on the desktop in the trash. When I tried to use the jiggly method to delete the launchpad icon no x appeared but when I double clicked it a question mark appeared and than the little black x? Has what I did damaged the game or app ina anyway?

They may be in Users/your_name/Library/Application Support depending on how they were installed.

Not being computer literate, I need help please. My son bought my husband a game called 'Empire: Total War' which is a Games for Windows DVD. When trying to install the game, the following message appears:

Your Mac can install Windows on the hard drive, by setting aside and making spare for a Windows partition using Boot Camp and Boot Camp Assistant (in Utility folder, inside Applications).

Read the FAQ, and the PDF guide you cna print/save from inside Boot Camp Assistant.
I'd suggest planning on version of Windows, size of volume (depends on how much space is available), but first and foremost: BACKUP first. Then consider if it is worth all the effort. Or get a PC low end model just for gaming.

The XBox uses three PowerPC processors that run very very hot and need constant power and Mac's use Intel processors that run very cool in comparison.
It would take a complete rewrite of the entire games code to make it work on a Mac.
So in short, it can't be done. Sorry.

Should I not play games on my Macbook Pro?

I heard that for laptops, gaming is not a good idea because of the questionable resiliency of the keyboards and trackpads. Is this knowledge applicable to MacBook Pros as well? I know Apple makes products that last, but when it comes to onboard keyboards and trackpads, I'm unsure of it.
So should I not play games on my MacBook Pro? To avoid ruining the keyboard or trackpad? Or is this something that I don't need to worry about?

Why can I play the full version of pogo games on my macbook?

I am club pogo member but have not been able to access all the games on my macbook pro or any other apple product I own. It there anyway to

OS X is multilingual no matter where you buy it, you choose the language of the user interface and the default keyboard when you first install it and you can switch the language of the user interface via system preferences in a minute or so.
