Steam Linux Games have slow FPS

Any tips on improving FPS? It's rather sad that it's 2013 and I'm still getting fps down to 50 in HL1 mods (with my laptop[1]). I've been playing Day of Defeat for a few days and the low fps is pretty irritating. I don't know how many decades it takes to run a mod from the year 2000 perfectly. I'd like the fps to be constantly 100. The fps is slow for all the games I've tested. The issue exists for native and wine "emulated" Steam. I'm currently sticking with native Steam.
I'm using 1920x1080 resolution, but other than that all the couple of graphics options are set to low quality. I tried to use a lower resolution but the impact on fps was pretty miniscule. I tried to use the Nvidia card according to the Wiki's instructions with primusrun, but the fps didn't improve noticeably. VSync is off. I'm using the libraries bundled with Steam. My desktop environment is Lxde (which is apparently one of the lightest desktop environment's out there).

this should rock ... i have a core2 with a GF9800GT, 4G ram and have stable 60fps at 1280x1024 (yes, net_graph shows that), everything full (with vsync of course, above 60fps, you just waste the power) in games like portal, counter-strike: source, etc., so both valve and source engines.
You can narrow down the issue with:
1. try without any sound
2. try a different window manager too (if possible something lightweight), to rule out a faulty setting.
3. i'm out of date with the new i5 CPUs, but acording to ark.intel.com the CPU has an integrated Intel® HD Graphics 3000, if so, are you sure you are running the games on the nvidia card and not on the integrated intel?) - you can make a simple test, use a software render setting in any valve (half-life 1) engine at 640x480 or 800x600, the cpu should run that fluently, and compare that to OpenGL setting inside the game.
I'm using LXDE which uses Openbox, that should be light enough. I'm sure that I'm using the Nvidia card, because the game doesn't start if I don't manually start bumblebee service (which incidentally is another unsolved bug). I might try disabling sound if I have the time..

    Hello Archers!
    I have recently switched back to Arch a few weeks ago and did not have these issues. However, I did a reinstall due to my own f**kup (it was faster to reinstall) a couple days ago and since then I have had terrible performance with Steam games no matter if I set them to low settings and low resolution or in windowed mode. The only thing I have done different from that install versus this one is I installed KDE instead of Gnome. This issue happens with all games I have and a list of most played are below. I am using the Open ATI driver due to the FGLRX driver not wanting to use both of my monitors at once. Has anyone had this issue before? I am going to look through the Gnome packages and see if there are any graphics related packages that I may try to install.

    Figured it out... I forgot Steam and games are 32bit applications and all I needed lib32-ati-dri

  • Problems with slow fps (or is my computer really that bad?) [solved]

    I'm having quite some trouble with my fps in games like StarCraft 2 (actually it's just here that I noticed it). Anyway I've decided to test how good my computer actually is using unigine heaven benchmark.
    And it's really bad. As I said I have slow fps in Starcraft in which fps is around 15, but in unigine it falls to average 4/5 depending on how I set it.
    While my computer is quite old, it's still not that old, and I don't have any problem with other graphically demanding games like C&C3 or Medieval 2: Total War.
    My hardware is:

    So where's the problem?
    Is my computer really that old already?
    On the related note, sometimes KDE loses the window decoration or even more it just disappear. So it might be the nvidia driver (as you can see I use nvidia-beta).
    But I'm not sure if it's the driver or is it the graphics card.
    Thanks for any help. If nothing else you could at least tell your frame rate and hardware so I can compare if my computer is "where it supposed to be" or if something really is wrong with it.

    Well I finally found the glxgears, and the fear I always feared, but didn't mentioned it in my OP came true. FPS is somewhere near the refresh rate of the monitor, and my monitor is also a TV (or should I say primary TV) so my refresh rate is 50hz or up to 60FPS. So I guess the actual and the biggest bottleneck is my monitor and not anything else. Well yeah not that my other hardware is any good, but I could say that the low FPS rate in StarCraft 2 and in Unigine Heaven is due to my bad monitor.
    I can say this is solved, but not removed until I get a new monitor.
    Edit: Actually there is another thing, how come that while my monitor refresh rate is 60; FPS in both Starcraft  and Unigine are so much lover - instead of 60FPS there are from 4-17FPS.

  • My games run at same slow fps at every quality

    Previusly I had a Pentium4 1.7 on Intel 845WN with 128MB SDRAM(133mhz). I recently bought XFX 6600GT agp8x. The games ran nice. So I decided to upgrade my PC (in my limited budget). After reading articles( anandtech and xbitlabs) abt cpus, I came to decide that Intel celeron D would perform better than the Pentium 4 1.7.  So I bought on 15-12-2004 :- Intel Celeron D 2.4 ghz, MSI 661FM-L, 512MB DDR333mhz. I have a 300 watts power supply.
    The problem is :-
    Doom3 , 1024x768 High Quality, 4xAA , avg. FPS = 6
    Doom3 ,   640x480 Low Quality, no AA, avg. FPS = 6
    NFS Und.2, 1024x768 Maximum quality ,max AA,  avg FPS = 15
    NFS Und.2, 800x600   Lowest quality , no AA         avg FPS = 15
    Mafia, avg. FPS at any graphics quality = 6
    The same is in other games.
    I installed the Beta driver 67.03 but still no effect.
    Can any one tell me where the problem lies?

    After having my new PC i gave a full NTFS format to my HDD and installed a fresh copy of windows. Then I installed nvidia driver. then I installed Sis agp driver. I found games running slow. I updated my vga driver finding no effect. Then I just checked whether the same problem is arriving with the integrated vga. The same problem was there even with builtin vga. I uninstalled it and again installed nvidia driver. No effect. I installed nvidia's beta driver. Result: same situation prevails.
    what should i do now?
    PS : in XFX's manual ( which came with vga), it said a min of 300 watts PSU is required.

  • After recent download of update to iPad, I now have no sound and all my games are slow.What happened?

    I recently downloaded the offered update to iPad.  Now I have now sound and all my games are slow.  Plus, anything with a video while surfing can't be viewed. Does anyone know hat happened and how to fix it?

    1. Close all apps in the Task Bar. Double-click the Home button and hold apps down for a second or two. Tap the minus sign to close app.
    2. Hold the Sleep and Home button down until you see the Apple Logo.

  • Steam bad game performance

    Hello!
    My system is 64bit Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz with Nvidia G635M  on my lapton. There are a lot of post in Internet saying that Left for dead 2 in Linux has more fps than in windows. But for me on Windows everything is smooth, but on Linux game freeze for a second sometimes, game video settings is the same on both systems.

    Hello!
    My system is 64bit Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz with Nvidia G635M  on my lapton. There are a lot of post in Internet saying that Left for dead 2 in Linux has more fps than in windows. But for me on Windows everything is smooth, but on Linux game freeze for a second sometimes, game video settings is the same on both systems.

    At topic, that I pointed to, author wrote that he deleted lib32-libtxc_dxtn, but I can't because lib32-mesa-dri requires lib32-libtxc_dxtn

  • [Steam] Source games freeze up X.

    Hello,
    I have a problem, where source games seem to crash in a random period. Sometimes they crash in 5 minutes, sometimes they crash in 20 minutes, sometimes they won't crash.
    Any source game has this problem. During the crash, X completely stops working. Switching to a TTY doesn't work, any SYSRQ combinations, etc.
    Things I have tried to do:
    * Disable Steam In-Game Overlay,
    * Run Steam without runtime,
    * Try three different desktop environments,
    * Use prerelease of source games,
    * Downgrade Catalyst drivers,
    * Dmesg, Journalctl, Xorg log, they show no errors.
    * SSH works during the freeze.
    * Added more swap space to see if it's a memory leak.
    * Compositing off.
    * Play in Windowed mode.
    Steam yields no backtraces during the crash, total freeze.
    Neither of these things worked. I reported this in the Valve bugtracker, but the problem doesn't seem to occur in Mint, which I have installed alongside Arch today. So I am thinking it would be more approriate to post it in here.

    I had the same (or at least a similar) problem with Catalyst beta versions on my HD 7870 Ghz. I don't remember trying SSH, but otherwise your problem is what I remember. Immediately before the crash, TF2 would start to stutter, and eventually the system would be locked up.
    I fixed the problem by downgrading to the stable version of Catalyst, which was, at the time, 13.4. I don't have any problem with the current stable version, 13.12, either. What Catalyst versions have you tried/downgraded to?
    You can also try asking in The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill if downgrading to the [catalyst-stable] repo doesn't help.

    You can use linux. But scan it 4 viruses be4 putting it on the iPod if there is a problem you will just need to restore your iPod. So make sure you you backup your files

    I am wondering why Mac games have higher system preferences compared to Windows games?
    For example "The Movies" game on Mac requires:
    Mac: OSX 10.4 Tiger or later,
    PPC G4 1.67 GHz,
    512MB RAM,
    64MB video card,
    DVD drive (minimum)
    Whilst on Windows:
    PC: Windows 98SE or later
    800 MHz CPU
    256MB RAM
    DirectX 9.0c compatible sound and video card.
    Now anyone can see the amount Windows needs compaired to Mac but why such a huge leap.
    And this isn't only on "The Movies" it's the same with "Sims 2" and "Age of Empires"

    I'm having the same problem. Dreamweaver is supper slow. Uploading and downloads from the server... any server I use two different servers. It times out all the time. Menus are slow too.
    I'm on a MAC Pro, 6 gigs of ram no issues with anything else. I have talked to Apple they have checked everything for me. They say it's Dreamweaver. I've noticed the Dreamweaver is talking to the FTP even when I'm not doing anything.
    I've tried cleaning out my MAC caches, turning off file check and check out. Still really slow. I've worked with Dreamweaver for 6 years never any issues like this before. 18 seconds to upload a 4 kb file. 11 seconds to download the same file.

    See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

    Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
    How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
    Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
    In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

    Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound. Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and its the icon; press home again to exit the taskbar.     If that doesn't solve it then try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

    FCP doesn't work with H.264 natively .  You need to convert all the files so they will match your FCP Sequence settings.
