Stear Clear of MOTU Symphonic instrument!!!

Was well pleased to be given a version of this software (at first!) - unfortunetley apart from having a nightmare getting my external hard-drive to except the samples DVD, the actual instrument totally screwed up Logic!
After installing, it crashed, had sync errors contniually. I see a number of other users have had similar problems when trying to use this MOTU orchestral instrument with Logic. The strange thing was that Logic recognised the instrument no-problem in the AU manager, but it just seemed to conflict with the basic running of Logic? No updates (poor web support) and basic repairs solved nothing. Only removing the instrument and any reference to it, returned Logic to normal.
Fortunetly, it didn't cost me anything thankfully, but BEWARE if you are after an orchestral instrument for Logic - stear clear of this one!

Never mind- got it figured out!

  • Logic Pro 8 not seeing MOTU Symphonic Instrument or MOTU Ethno Instrument

I've installed Logic Pro 8.0.2, MOTU Symphonic Instrument 1.1.3, and MOTU Ethno Instrument 1.0.1. Logic 8 does not recognize the MOTU plug-ins. The stand-alone MOTU apps work, MOTU Ethno Instrument.component and MSI.component are both properly installed in Library>Audio>Plug-ins, and both MOTU plug-ins are available in Garageband.
Are there any known issues with MOTU and Logic Pro 8?

Sounds like a job for the Motu people.
What does Motu tech support have to say about this?

  • Is there an issue between EXSP24mkII and MOTU Symphonic Instrument?

I'm using Logic Express 7.2 for three large projects right now. Admittedly I'm pretty new to LE 7.2, since just recently switching over from Digital Performer.
So, far, LE has been very stable -- UNTIL last week when I loaded in MOTU's Symphonic Instrument. Now, if I have just one or two tracks of Symphonic instrument and nothing else, I'm fine, but if I start adding tracks that have different virtual instruments on them -- say, 2 tracks of Symphonic Instrument and 2 tracks of EXSP24 mkII, then I get frequent crashes.
The crashes occur as I record my first take on the first new track.
I can't seem to nail down a particular sequence of events yet, although I think I might be getting pretty close to figuring it out.
However, before I put in all the effort to figure out the bug, do you know if it's already been discovered? Are there known issues between Symphonic Instrument and Logic or MacIntels, or something?
    Thanks!

I do have the latest version -- the one that's compatible with the MacIntels. And, when it's the only plug-in, it works great.
Well, maybe not quite as great as EXSP24mkII, but pretty good. There are still some wierd clicks that happen during playback occasionally, but, VERY fortunately, don't happen when I bounce the tracks down.
It doesn't seem like there's a known issue, so I'll see if I can isolate a series of actions that cause the problem. If I can nail it down, I'll let you all know.

  • Motu Symphonic and Automation in Logic 8

Hi wise people. I'm just posting this from a previous thread to see if I can get some advice.
I have about 10 instruments on Motu each sent to their own specific channel. I went in and did some track automation on each of them, just volume(subtle increases and decreases) and pan but when I hit play and look at the Motu instrument itself the volume fader is going nuts while the piece plays. I think this is what the problem is. Is there a way to set the Motu volume at a static point while changing the volume on individual instruments within Motu?
    Thanks for any advice.

I do not own Motu Symphonic, but I thing I guess where is the problem...
Logic Track Automation is 98% based to record Logic behavior "Fader" message events type with 2% exception of Level and Pan which is recorded as CC# track automation events i.e CC7&10. Motu is a Multitimbral software synth and its multi channel/parts level faders are probably factory mapped to "Host-CC7". You must re-read the Motu documentation and find out how to re-map the level or pan faders to other Controllers (for example CC12,CC13 etc) out of CC7&10 which affect the Logic Channel Strip level and pan faders.

  • AU plug-in, in Components folder, not in GarageBand

I've been searching through forums for an answer to this, but so far, no luck:
I've installed MOTU Symphonic Instrument v1.1.3, which is a stand-alone app as well as an AU plug-in. The plug-in is now in Library>Audio>Plug-ins>Components, but in GarageBand 3.0.4 it does not show up in the Generator pop-up list in Track Info for software instrument.
However, MOTU Ethno Instrument, which I have also installed, DOES show up and does function properly when selected.
To compund the mystery, both Symphonic Instrument and Ethno Instrument are functioning as plug-ins in Logic Express 7.
    MOTU support says:
"Since the MSI AU is working in Logic Express, the problem is specific to GarageBand. Most AU hosts have a way of forcing re-examination of your installed AU plug-ins. Check the GarageBand documentation for instructions on how to do this."
I can find no reference anywhere as to how to get GarageBand to re-scan for plug-ins.
I've tried re-installing the MOTU plug-in, both before and after upgrading from GB3.0 to GB3.0.4. I have also repaired permissions with disk utility.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you, X
Fortunately, MOTU support sent a follow-up email with instructions as to how to force GB to rescan for plug-ins. I had tried just trashing preferences files from the Preferences folder but that didn't help. The appropriate file is in the caches folder.
For the benefit of anybody who might be having a similar problem, here's MOTU's instuctions:
Here's the file you need you to remove to get GarageBand to rescan the AU plug-ins:
    /Users/your_username/Library/Caches/GarageBand/com.apple.GarageBandAUs.plist
Quit GarageBand, and drag com.apple.GarageBandAUs.plist to the trash. When you launch GarageBand again, your AU plug-ins should be rescanned.
    This did the trick.

  • Logic keeps unexpectedly quitting..

in searching around this forum, this hardly seems to be an unheard of problem.
i use Logic Pro 7.0.1, with a MOTU 896HD firewire interface. basically logic keeps quitting whenever i use virtual instruments (not immediately, but frequently enough to cause me to throw my spare keyboard out the window. yes, i know!!), in particular the MOTU Symphonic Instrument (MSI, to abbreviate). i have a template set up which contains one track with the MSI assigned to it, and that quits when i save it after opening. it also happens when i'm just playing with the instrument, even without hitting the play button. it gives out a message saying that there has been a core audio overload, then it quits.
i have moved all the plug-ins i can to my second (internal) hard drive, and it's working slightly better now, tho the problem has not ceased to happen.
i thought i should mention that i recorded a small session yesterday (4 tracks), and it did not quit once, so the problem must be something to do with MIDI or plugins...
any ideas? any help would be so greatly appreciated!

  • Lion aggregate device

Trying to re-setup my music/midi/composing system like I had in my old PPC. Created an aggregate device, bussed MOTU Symphonic instruments to the AD as before, but it won't route to either Sound Studio or Hijack Pro! I need to mix rack mount synth sounds via the audio line in jacks with on board Symphonic Instruments. Well, everything comes out of the speakers just fine, and the external synths route to the recorded just fine, but no matter what combination I try, I can't get the MOTU sounds into a the recorder. Yes, all programs are newest, yes, I have LineIn installed as well... I even tried Soundflower to no avail. The audiomidi setup app is different from Tiger, so even trying to reload all my previous settings isn't working.
Anyone have any ideas where I could be going wrong? Aggregate Device sounds so simple on paper, but even when I follow instructions, it won't get onboard sounds into any recorder... only to the line out & speakers.

  • Is OS upgrade worth it?

Hi all... I'm running OS 10.4.11 on my non-Intel dual 2.3 G5 silver tower w 2 gigs of RAM. Honestly, is it worth it for me to upgrade to 10.5? If "yes" then how far in updating should I go, since I seem to notice people having issues with 10.5.2? Thanks for any-all input.

    Robert Wendel1 wrote:
Excellent answers, folks. I guess I should have asked: "Did you notice any speed and/or stability increases with 10.5?" The extra features like iLife '08 I'm sure are wonderful, along with "Time Machine" but my speed, stability, and functionality are most important for my Finale/Sibelius/ Digital Performer/ MOTU Symphonic instruments and midi-audio based business.
Thanks again for the responses! Anyone else have feedback to give?
My G5 runs faster with Leopard, and also boots and shuts down more quickly. I still have Tiger on my second HD so the comparisons are accurate.
Ditto with my two MBPs, both of which still boot their original Tigers from the external HD. Again, there is a noticeable speed/performance increase. I don't have the new iLife - the original still works fine. My Epson printers and scanner work just as well as with Tiger and all the 3rd party apps I have that required updating also work fine.
For me, there is no reason to go back to Tiger except to check it out from time to time and see if there are any updates, etc.
I also have XP running on both my G5 and my older MBP and am running Vista Ultimate 64-bit on this MBP. Again, all without any problems whatsoever.

  • 3RD party plugins -New to Logic (First post)

    Hi
The wife bought me Logic Studio for Christmas and so far I'm loving it. I'm having a problem with some instrument plugins : True Pianos, Drumcore, and Motu Symphonic Instrument. They all show up in the "Audio Units Manager" as successfully validated. The Logic boxes are checked but I can't check the nodes boxes.
I tried re-scanning but they don't show up on my channels.
I routed an external hardware compressor and reverb and they are working fine.
If anyone can give me any information I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thank you.

Yes , you cannot use 3rd party instruments as nodes (which are plugins running an a second computer). That is not a problem.
But the instruments should show up when you clickhold an I/O slot on an Instrument Tracks' Channel Strip:

I can play it in Cakewalk, but I can not assign a MIDI file to it and have it play it without getting the same kind of pops I was getting in stand alone mode. I read an earlier post about problems with NVidia and that is the maker of my motherboard. I have not had any problems with the pops in instances where I am just playing audio from a CD or?by playing a wav. or mp3. I bought this card because of the the ASIO?2.0 compatibility, but I am starting to have my doubts on whether or not this card can handle what Creative claims. Anyone got any ideas? I appreciate any help I can get.

Have You forget? You are back in the 80's again! Use Creative Cr..s Mode Switcher and manually switch to Game Mode. And don't forget to manually switch to other Mode before launching any other applications. If You don't have Mode Switcher (Volume Panel) in system tray and obvoiusly don't have any system slowdowns and not experioncing high RAM usage that means You don't have Creative Bloatware installed. You can find it on X-Fi instllation CD.

  • Kontakt 2's Sample Library adequate?

Hello everyone! I am thinking of getting a better Orchestral Library. I was wondering if the Orchestral Library bundled with KONTAKT 2 (VSL) is adequate enough... from standard orchestration to film score like arrangement. Lush strings and big brass...
Or should i get a dedicated one?
    IK Miroslav Classik?
    EWQL Gold?
    Motu Symphonic Library?
    thanks

    Greetings Anjelo,
unless composing orchestral mock-ups is putting bread on your table, there is no need to even look at the Vienna's stuff. Surely, those are great, amazing samples, but the price tag is great too... Vienna's libraries get regularly recommended, simply because: what's expensive, it must be good... I can't help wonder about its' actual usage by the people who do recommend it...
I would say if you have $10K for the Orchestral Cube + the extended libraries, man, go for it, I can garantee you that you will not be disappointed... I know how it sounds.
Otherwise, any of the listed (IK Miroslav Philharmonik - not the Classik - MOTU Symphonic Instrument, Kirk Hunter's Emerald Symphony Orchestra, EWQL Gold, Garritan's Personal Orchestra, and even (... forgive me) Steinberg's Halion Symphonic Orchestra will keep you busy and creative enough until your work starts requiring something like Vienna Symphonic Library...
Even the cheapest instrument can sound amazing in right hands...
    Good luck,
    H.

  • What is the best RAID configuration for a MacPro as a Logic User?

There ought to be a universal answer to this question: what is the best RAID configuration for Logic Mac Pro users? I will be more specific.
I use Logic Studio, Reason, Ableton, and Motu Symphonic Instrument simultaneously.
I want to fail safe my precious audio files and improve performance as the system reads/writes data from multiple files, from audio tracks to digital samples.
I want to run video files simultaneously to do nifty audio soundtracking to video.
Here is the configuration I have in mind.
HD 1: OS and Logic Studio, Reason/Ableton samples etc. software (non-raid) (250 GB)
HD 2/3: MIrrored RAID set for AUDIO FILES (500 Gb identical pair)
HD 4: Video files / Bouncing (1 TB)
Makes sense right? A disk for reading software. A pair of 500 GB disks for reading/writing audio files and sessions in mirrored array. A 1 TB disk for video and bouncing. The main question I have is, for audio files only, is striped or mirrored better? 64K blocks the best? And are there any more details. I assume to do this in Disk Utility.

Well, both Mirrored and Striped have their pros and cons. If you use mirrored, it will offer no better performance than the spec'ed drive along with it's sata bus speed. The plus point is, if one drive goes down, you have the second as a backup as the complete contents of one drive are mirrored on the other.
With striped you will get a performance boost because all files (for example a single project) will get written across both drives and hence split the load on the drives and the SATA busses. The drawback is that you'll have to make sure you have a good, regular backup schedule in place because when one of the drives goes to drive heaven, you're going to be stuffed without a full backup of both drives.
Exactly what performance boost you'd get will depend on your project, number of files, size of files, fragmentation of files, track count etc. You may find it would be easier to use the 3 drives straight, with no raid and have:
HD 1: OS and Apps. No samples at all.
HD2: Audio Files for Logic projects
HD3: Reason, Ableton, Logic etc instrument sample library
    HD4: Video and bouncing.
Which is what I ended up doing although I use HD4 as an interchangeable backup for HD1 and 2.
There is no universal answer to this as each must make their own choice based on their preferences and needs. Mirrored will give you full backup but on-site, in machine backup. Not much good if something untoward and drastic happens to the physical machine. I think a few people toy with striped RAID but fall on the side of using the drives straight, as in their projects they don't see a big enough gain over splitting the data across your 3 remaining drives without RAID. Studios that seriously consider raid often go out and get a dedicated raid that can offer more variations than raid 0 or raid 1 (Striped and Mirrored) and better throughput.
I hope this helps a little and not just added to the dilemma.

  • Most Authentic Orchestra Sampler

I am somwhat new to Logic. I'm scoring a film and don't have the time or budget for a real orchestra. However, I would like to invest in a $500-$700 range orchestra sampler. What's the best out there and what are some tips for making it sound real (as in best space designer setting etc.)

Congrats on your film score opportunity!
Yours is a hard question to answer because you haven't mentioned what style your score is going to be. Overall, are you looking for a big sound or an intimate sound? Those kinds of things... And every orchestral library will have its strengths and weaknesses.
If you want to get by on the cheap, get Garritan Personal Orchestra. $249. It's got its own learning curve (stock programs aren't velocity sensitive to volume -- you have to ride the mod wheel to control dynamics) but IMO you're not going to achieve the huge, glorious "Hollywood" string or brass ensembles from that collection.
Haven't tried it, but there's the MOTU symphonic instrument as well.
Another way to go would be get some Akai-based orchestral CD-ROMs (these can be translated into EXS24 format -- without the need for additional conversion software). Same goes for Gigasampler (to a limited extent). Some of these CD-ROMs are relatively inexpensive. So right off the bat you have the Peter Seidlaczek stuff, Kirk Hunter, and other string libraries to choose from.

  • Nasty MOTU MSI / Modulation problem - please help!!

OK, I've searched high and low for a solution to this, but no joy, so here goes...
For weeks now, I've had an issue with MOTU's Symphonic Instrument.
Parts recorded with it play back distorted if the active track in Logic's arrange window is not the one the plug-in is on.
The 'distortion' is in actual fact the MSI playing back as if the modwheel is full on. It sounds like a very fast square-wave gate. Whipping the wheel back and forth back to zero while the MSI track is active will temporarily cure the problem, but as soon as you change tracks, it's back. It doesn't make any difference whether the plug-in is configured in single-channel or multitimbral mode.
I've also had the same thing happen with Absynth, which suggests it might be more something to do with the way Logic handles CC#1 data from the Korg Kontrol 49. There are a number of reports about the buggy implementation of CC#1 on this controller, but they mainly concern it being used in Native Mode, which I don't use, as I need a working modwheel. Swapping the Korg out for a Roland PC300 keyboard controller had no effect in any case.
It may have been caused by CC#1 events lurking around in the MIDI parts... some of them were originally recorded with Garritan Personal Orchestra, which uses the modwheel as a volume control. However, I couldn't find any such events, and although I might have got nearer to figuring out what's causing the problem, I can't get it to stop doing it.
    Inserting "CC#1 = 0" messages into the part's event list doesn't help.
Recording modwheel resets on the same track doesn't help.
Turning on the "Chase Controllers" preference doesn't help.
Using a different controller keyboard doesn't help.
Setting fire to the computer doesn't help.
I am unable to perform the 1.1.1 update for MSI, so that doesn't help. The plug-in crashes Logic's validation with a "Fatal Error." This results in it being greyed out in the AU Manager list, and I am therefore unable to enable it manually. I'm currently swapping emails with MOTU tech support about this.
If anyone can help resolve this while I still have some hair left to tear out, there's at least 3 pints of strong beer in it for them....
    G5 2GHz, 8GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.5)   Logic Pro 7.1.0, MSI 1.0.0, MOTU 828mkII, Korg Kontrol 49, bad headache...

I would say do figure out how to make the upgrade first and foremost. A lot was done in that upgrade, and one may have been to fix this bug.
As for cc data, have you checked the track automation for the track with MSI? I know it's an obvious question, but if there's ghost data it will show up there.
