SteerMouse and keyboard conflict

My keyboard setting is set up so that the control and apple keys are switched around (to more closely match windows style shortcuts).
When using Safari, I want to be able to middle click links so that they open in a new tab.
I use SteerMouse, so I have to say that the middle click = apple + left click.
I believe that since my keyboard settings has Control and Apple switched, SteerMouse gets confused. I have to regularly switch the SteerMouse setting of Middle Clicking to equal Apple+left click and Control+left click.
What can I do to prevent having to switch this setting!!
Thanks!

Hi, castlljs —
I recently started using SteerMouse, too, and I like its tracking (speed and acceleration) controls quite a bit.
I can't tell from your post — have you tried using the "Add/Remove Applications" [or Default ) pull-down menu at the top-left-hand corner of the SteerMouse buttons panel to extend your preference to Safari?
If we can't figure out how to resolve this — and I think we can — please note this contact info on the SteerMouse Support page:
"If you have any questions, please email to [email protected]
If you have any problems, please include the following information in the email:

1.   The type of mouse.

2.   The type of Mac and the version of Mac OS.

3.   The version of SteerMouse."
I'd appreciate hearing back from you on the details of your progress; and would be happy to help troubleshoot this further.
Warm regards,
Dean
p.s. ...and, castlljs, I humbly suggest you accelerate your transition from Windoze to Mac, if at all feasible, by trying to use the Mac versions of shortcuts. ⌘, for example, is a good thing.  To add a cheerful historical footnote: did you know it was originally "borrowed" from the "a floral symbol that was used in Sweden to indicate an interesting feature or attraction in a campground..." ?

  • Monitor and Keyboard Don't Awake From Sleep

    Background:
I have two internal HDD's. Replaced the original Quantum with an 80G Maxtor. A 160G Maxtor has been my 'main' drive...daily use, etc and the Quantum (now the 80G Maxtor) has been/is the 'backup' drive. I used CarbonCopyCloner and cloned to the 80G. The 80G boots and operates just fine....EG all apps....except ...
After going to Sleep, when I press any key and awaken the computer, the power light comes on (changes from yellow to green) but the monitor stays asleep and the keyboard is apparently asleep; EG the caps lock key doesn't light up and doesn't respond to CMD+Eject. The Logitech laser mouse is connected to the keyboard; it lights up when moved. I've had to force shutdown using the power button...not good.
I've run DU (RepairPermissions and RepairDisk), safe boot, and fsck....to no avail. Yes, I reset the PMU on installation of the new HD.
I thought it was clone deal until encountering the same thing with the 160G 'main' drive.
Naturally, on restart I get an error message about the "...computer shutting down while OS X was in operation..." and here's the report:

Is the report talking about the monitor/keyboard sleep deal or is it reporting on the hard shutdown? I have sleep set to Never for the time being and I'm going to run DiskWarrior after signing off.
Any ideas on what to do about the monitor/keyboard not awakening from sleep?
    Thanks in advance,
    David

    Hi, Dave-
Well, it is a PC site, so any mention they give to Apple is a courtesy. They actually have good links to Apple articles.
    FYI- here's some definitions:
    IRQ
"Abbreviation of interrupt request line, and pronounced I-R-Q. IRQs are hardware lines over which devices can send interrupt signals to the microprocessor. When you add a new device to a PC, you sometimes need to set its IRQ number by setting a DIP switch. This specifies which interrupt line the device may use. IRQ conflicts used to be a common problem when adding expansion boards, but the Plug-and-Play specification has removed this headache in most cases."
Which is controlled by the BIOS (firmware)
"BIOS, in computing, stands for Basic Input/Output System also incorrectly known as Basic Integrated Operating System. BIOS refers to the software code run by a computer when first powered on. The primary function of the BIOS is to prepare the machine so other software programs stored on various media (such as hard drives, floppies, and CDs) can load, execute, and assume control of the computer. This process is known as booting up".
The explanation you quoted just means check your system specs with your maker. PC boards have LOTS of variables. Elsewhere, they say check/update your firmware, which is good advice for all Mac users.
As for Belkin, one of several models, it has the NEC chipset. I have seen reports of Mac users getting results with a Belkin. I guess they got the right one.
In the USBMan site, as well as all other sites I have researched (Mac or PC) the over riding theme is that USB 2.0 PCI extension of systems is problematic because of 1- the onboard ROM of the card, 2- the firmware of the system, and 3- conflicts between the two.
I believe that because of all the variations possible in the (version)code of system firmware, peripheral device firmware and the various ROM chips by various manufacturer carrying their own various code/versions of code, it's only natural that, although maddening, we find conflicts arising in some combinations, and not others.
(And because of this, it keeps a lot of programmers and developers in business). Maybe some day, someone will find the "golden code" so that we all enjoy hassle free expansion!
As far as combo cards go, my experience has been expensive and disastrous(2 makers, 2 cards, kernel panic, system lock, nothing good). I am happy with my native FW400, and can live without FW800 until something better comes along.
This has been fun, thanks. I hope others will bother to use "forum search" to find all this info. If people find a satisfactory resolution, I'm happy.

  • Wireless mouse and Keyboard Issue after closing the lid - external display

Can anyone give any insight. Recent purchase of a new Late 2008 15" MBP. I have connected it to an external 24" Apple monitor on my desk and use a wireless mouse and wireless keyboard on my desk top. I have configured the laptop to wake on bluetooth devices. So here is the problem: The laptop when the lid is up recognizes the bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I close the lid/screen. Laptop powers down... the after several seconds I move the mouse and the laptop comes alive... But after that there are no bluetooth devices attached. When I use the mouse, I get "connection lost" with a white figure of the mighty mouse on the screen. The wireless keyboard is not there and I have to open the lid and manually find the mouse and reconnect. The keyboard seems to work however....
    Apple..... any thoughts..... anyone?????

Hi Stentdoc; I'm thinking, 'connection lost ~= sorta low AA batteries in the Mighty Mouse? (I would put in fresh AA batteries in the mouse and keyboard, to eliminate as an issue that the 'connection lost' is due to low batt voltage; that this is causing the failure to wake.) ... then, in System Preferences > Hardware > Energy Saver, settings for Power Adapter > Sleep, set to "never" for "Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for ..." to eliminate that as a conflict when trying to wake with bluetooth from sleep induced by closing the lid ...
Check your current "Sleep" setup (I left my MBP as "3")
    go to Utilities > Terminal
After you launch Terminal, the first step is to determine which sleep mode your Mac is currently using. You can both view and change the sleep mode using the Unix program pmset. To see your current settings, type (or, copy and paste)
    pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
    press 'enter'
You should see something like this:
    $ pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
    hibernatemode 3
So your machine is using mode 3 ... thanks to the documentation for the handy Deep Sleep Dashboard widget, which puts your machine immediately into hibernation mode (so you don’t have to yank all the power sources to invoke it):
    * 0 - Old style sleep mode, with RAM powered on while sleeping, safe sleep disabled, and super-fast wake.
    * 1 - Hibernation mode, with RAM contents written to disk, system totally shut down while “sleeping,” and slower wake up, due to reading the contents of RAM off the hard drive.
    * 3 - The default mode on machines introduced since about fall 2005. RAM is powered on while sleeping, but RAM contents are also written to disk before sleeping. In the event of total power loss, the system enters hibernation mode automatically.
also, I enabled this (to change back, input "lidwake 1":
    go to Utilities > Terminal
type in sudo pmset lidwake 0 then "enter"
it will ask for your password. type it in, that's it!
Now, when your computer is sleeping with the lid closed, when you open the lid nothing happens until you press any key ... nice: keeps it off when accidentally opened, like in a backpack?
WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss
or the deletion of important system files. Please double-check your
typing when using sudo. Type "man sudo" for more information.
To proceed, enter your password, or type Ctrl-C to abort.

  • BT Mouse and keyboard on multi-boot computer

I sometimes boot off of my external HD instead of the internal HD of my MacPro. When I do this Apple mouse and alum. keyboard do not remember both systems. Just the one I last synched with. Is there anyway for the mouse and keyboard to remember both systems? I suppose it is designed to only synch with one computer to avoid conflicts.

I have both generation Apple BT keyboards. The white and now the aluminum. The flat key aluminum took a bit to get used to, but the low profile fits the height of my keyboard tray better as it is not adjustable. Also the small length gives me plenty of room for mousing, as the old white BT Apple keyboard has the number pad on it. The alum. one also has various icons on the "F" keys for Dashboard etc. The best? I don't know. Dependable under BT? I've had no problems with them.

  • 848P Neo trouble with 6600GT and resource conflicts

Hey everyone, built this computer not too long ago out of parts furnished to me. I originally had a GeForce 4 MX 4000.  So I just purchased a XFX GeForce 6600 GT for obvious reasons. lol (Thinks to self, maybe I should have went ATI)
Since then I've been in for a world of hurting.  During Post or any like screen I can't read anything. just a bunch of jumbled characters. The USB went whacky, off and on power wise. And I'm stuck with the default VGA drivers in Windows.  Error 10 - Device could not start is listed for the card in Device Manager.  Although I am still using this card for video, since there is no on-board video on this board.
Farther research into my situation revealed the card, my USB Host Controllers AND one of my Nics are all on IRQ 16.  That's lovely.  I can't find out how to force these devices, particularly my video card, to a different IRQ. I would like it to be on empty IRQ 11 if I could (Can't find much in the BIOS that is talked about on this board). But now I am wondering, this wouldn't explain my problems before XP even loads would it?  Though my USB mouse seemed like it was flickering here and there during/after post. Maybe the two interfering trying to interupt the CPU at the same time could explain the garbled graphics.  Right now I'm using PS2 mouse and keyboard. no USB devices hooked up and same problems.
Sorry for the long post. Heres the IRQ Table and also some memoryaddressing conflicts that I dont know how to correct.

  • Problem with xfce and/or mouse and keyboard

    Hi!
Two days ago I've turned on my laptop with Arch and the display manager Slim has frozen immediately. Later on Single-User mode I've uninstalled it. Now in normal mode when I type "startxfce4" everything is showing up, but the mouse and keyboard don't work. I know it's not frozen, because animation of mouse and CPU Frequency Monitor is on.
Strange fact is that laptop is not connecting with the Internet, so now I don't know where the problem is.
It's happening when I start xfce both from user and super user.
Just before those troubles I've updated everything with "pacman -Syu", but I haven't seen anything strange. Also the computer could have been roughly turned off (by unplugging power supply), when was turning on.
    Thanks,
    Gaba

Sorry for not replying, but I didn't have access to my laptop by this time.
On grub I have only normal mode and 'fallback' mode, so I have result from 'journalctl' from normal mode.
I'm sending the fragment of this file where you can see everything after I typed 'startxfce4' in console:
    http://codepad.org/8pYIj8qC
I see that something is wrong, but after some attempts I don't know how to fix this ^^
    Edit:
Oh, I forgot to write, that I've tried activate some drivers from 'lspci -k' (there were no "Kernel driver in use:..." in almost every device), but it didn't fi anything.

    Hi
The screen on my notebook [HP PAVILION DV6T-7000 (A5F76AV)] does not have good vewing angles, it glares alot. Is it possible to upgrade the screen? I think it is a stantard HD type with 1366 x 768 px resolution, and I'm hoping to upgrade it to a WUXGA anti glare type screen with 1920 x 1200 or 1080  px resolution.
I checked on hp'partsurfer and I guess this is what i'm looking for: ( 682068-001SPS-DSPLY HU 15.6 FHD AG ALU DSC )
I'm currently in saudi arabia. Can you please tell me if the screen can be upgraded here?
Apart from that the keyboard does not have a backlight. Can I upgrade the keyboard to a backlit keyboard?
    Thanks.

  • USB mouse and keyboard not working

    Any advice/thoughts/suggestions appreciated:
All 3 USB ports at the back of my iMac have stopped working.  This means I can't use either a keyboard or mouse, so have no way of logging in.  I turn my iMac on, it boots up as usual, but when it gets to the login screen, the mouse and keyboard don't work and I get a message about bluetooth set-up. (Both my mouse and keyboard are wired, not bluetooth).
I have tried an SMC reset (by turning the iMac off, unplugging all USB devices and the power cable, leaving the iMac for a few minutes and then plugging the cable back in a turning it on again).  This didn't work.
I've also tried a different version of the SMC reset where I hold down the power button whilst all the cables are unplugged and also as I plug the power cable back in.  After doing this, the fan turns on at full speed (v loud), but the mouse and keyboard still don't work.
I've also checked my mouse on a different computer and it works fine.
Has anyone got any other suggestions / workarounds?
Note I can't do a PRAM reset because my keyboard doesn't work.
Is it probably that the USB hardwear has failed?  If so, is it possible to repair this?  It is worth repairing given it is a 5/6 year old iMac (the white plastic one) which is probably on its last legs anyway?
    many thanks!
    Jez.

Try the SMC reset again, only this time wait 5 minutes in set 3 instead of fifteen seconds.
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds. 5 minutes.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • USB mouse and keyboard don't work on HP Pavilion g7 2203sd, Windows 8.1.

It is not possible to use a USB mouse or keyboard on the HP Pavilion g7 2203sd notebook running Windows 8.1.
A wireless mouse used to work (already some time ago), but now wired or wireless mouse and keyboard don't work any more.
I have tried removing USB devices in the Windows Device Manager and let Windows detect them again, but it does not work.
I read somewhere that it might have to do with the xHCI USB controller that is installed.
I tried removing that and connecting the USB mouse but no succes.
I also looked for driver updates or something to disbale in the BIOS (like xHCI), but nothing found for that.
Can anybody help me with this problem.

  • Macbook Air Trackpad And Keyboard Unresponsive!! PLEASE HELP!

Hello everyone, a while ago (about 2 months) my Macbook air started having troubles with its trackpack and keyboard. At random times they would become unresponsive and just stop working. They would work for like 1 second when the computer turns on but then it would stop. A couple weeks ago the problem stopped occuring the keyboard and trackpad were working fine and dandy. Of course until last night, I open the computer and the trackpad and keyboard won't work.. The keyboard lights are on and the power button works but nothing else does it is extremely frustrating! I did an SMC reset which worked for like 5 minutes until it stopped working again. I have done a NVRAM reset nothing, I have done everything that I have seen but I need a fix for this! The mac is running OS X 10.9.3 and I am pretty sure that is the latest. Please help me guys I am really getting frustrated with this undying problem ;/

you don't need to disassemble your device.
    4 days is a lot.
maybe rust has already been created.

Both trackpad and mouse work when I have to sign into my account; however, once I'm on my windows screen both stop working. It tries and searches for bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I don't know how else to fix this issue. Please help I have tried all recovery options and erased everything on disk utility ( i saved my files first ) . for now i have been using an external mouse and keyboard. I also had the newest software update os x yosemite but when i re installed os x it installed lion but still the same problem.

finally its fixed!! ...i went on the mac osx hints site...someone suggested resetting the pram and pmu...i was worried i wouldn't be able to hit the key combinations because of the whole keyboard thing...but apparently, my keyboard still worked until it got into os x...so i reset the pmu with shift-option-control-power while the computer was off...and voila...problem solved!!

  • Problem with rotation and keyboard click sound

Ok, there's still a problem with the rotation and keyboard click sound and I thought I had the problem fixed.
It's a serious bug when you want the keyboard click sound enbabled without having the rotation locked. I noticed this bug started when I had the previous iosinstalled 7.0.6.
Everytime I wanted to enable the keyboard click sound, I have to always go to settings and have lock rotation checked. And it would stay locked.
If I wanted to rotate my iPad, I have to have mute enabled, but no keyboard click sound.
I know it sounds confusing. I'm already confused... beh.

    I completely forgot about that.
    Thank you!

  • Trackpad and Keyboard intermittent Freezing

My trackpad and keyboard are freezing at random intervals for random spans of time (usually for a few seconds). I havent downloaded any recent software that has cause this to my knowledge. Any help would be wonderful because even typing this is frustrating.

I just took delivery of a new MacBook a couple of days ago. When I started it up I let it restore all of my user files, applications, and everything from a Time Machine backup. That worked fine, but now Time Machine wants to perform the initial, lengthy backup on a new machine. I find that when that is running, the trackpad and keyboard both freeze and I can't do anything. Strangely, if I plug a Logitech travel mouse into one of the USB ports, that is able to drive the mouse cursor. The keyboard is still frozen until I turn the backup off though.
I'm going to plug the MacBook directly into the Time Capsule to get the backup to go faster, but I still wonder: is there a way to reduce the priority of the Time Machine process so I can use the MacBook while the backup is running?

  • Macbook Pro trackpad and keyboard freezes after attempting sleep mode

I bought this computer on April 2008. It has the latest OS X 10.5.6 and it did not accept the trackpad firmware. I tried to install and the software said "this computer does not need this update".
This has been happening a lot when I am using Skype while talking to someone with video and sound. The computer tries to go on sleep mode because I am not typing or touching it - it thinks I am away because I am just talking and watching the person on the other side.
I touch the computer to avoid getting on sleep mode and with that it freezes the trackpad and keyboard. I continue to listen and see the other person and they continue to see me and hear me, but I cannot move the "mouse" cursor on the screen or type anything. Neither can I force to quit anything. The only thing that works is to close the computer and open again, that forces the computer to go into sleep mode then I can make it wake up again by opening it and touching any key on the keyboard.
This have been interrupting Skype calls and a study I am conduting. I have to keep touching the computer trackpad to not let it sleep ever. I am concerned is something with the battery or maybe it needs some kind of firmware.
This is very recent, just started happening this week (March 2009). I have not added any new software or any hardware to the machine.
What can I do to make the trackpad and keyboard stop freezing when the computer tries to sleep?

this is in the wrong category. I added a new message to the right category: MacBook Pro but I don't know how to delete it from here.
