Step backward, undo and automatic layer changes.

A feature of Photoshop that has always annoyed is the way the Photoshop handles stepping backwards. It's taken me years to finally get motivated enough to post something about it, but so be it, lol.
Say I'm working on layer 2, and switch to layer 3. I then make two brushstrokes on layer 3. I decide I don't like these brushstrokes and remove them by "stepping backwards" twice. I'm now back on layer 2. At best, in this very common scenario, I have to annoyingly reselect layer 3 to continue working, and at worst I might accidentally do work on the wrong layer if I'm having an off day. The default undo is obviously useless in this scenario because of it's mutation in Ps as a method of comparing single changes. There is apparently no option to simply go back two steps and continue working on layer 3. I contacted Adobe support and was told so, more or less.  I"ve also requested a feature change. My current workaround for such methods is to habitually do some form of a useless edit to layer before doing actual work so that I never undo back to the wrong layer or waste time reselecting the layer I want.
Why on earth does Ps not give us the option to turn off this behavior? I'm baffled as to why Ps even works this way in the first place. As someone that primarily uses Ps to paint and illustrate, it would be amazing to be able to lock your selection from everything except manual changes. For what it's worth, I've seen people that have raised this issue elsewhere get unfairly buried by quite a few PEBKAC replies. That being said, it should be obvious that there's nothing I could do differently, in the way I'm working above, to alleviate this problem. When you find yourself having to work around a mandatory "feature", perhaps it's time is should be addressed?
Furthermore, I've read that there is a script available that will eliminate this problem, but I have my suspicions that it may be outdated for the most current form CC. Does anyone run such a script for the most recent version of Ps?

This has indeed been discussed many times in the past.  Alas, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for changes.
The thing is, these are user forums although some staff sometimes drop by, so not a conduit to address Adobe officially.

  • Make "step backward" command maintain current layer selection (like the "undo" command's behavior)...

Please make Photoshop's "step backward" command maintain current layer selection (like the "undo" command's behavior). So that when using the "step backward" to undo something it doesn't unnecessarily select a different layer . The current "step backward" layer change issue is inconvenient because it causes unnexpected layer selection change.

Has this happened yet ( an upgrade that fixes the step back layer switch problem ) in any updates?
    Arghhh very annoying.

  • "step backward" command maintain current layer selection

It is said that even in past versions of Photoshop,Please make "step backward" command maintain current layer selection (like the "undo" command's behavior).
The current "step backward" layer change issue is inconvenient because it causes unnexpected layer selection change.
When I was talking about this issue on Twitter, over 200 persons' approval was obtained in one day.
I know how to avoid in the script, but we hope as a standard feature.

    Yeah, I noticed that too.
For those who don't know what this is about, here's a sample scenario.  Let's say you're working on an image.
    1.  You happen to have an adjustment layer selected.
    2.  Now you want to work on an image layer below, so you click on it.
    3.  You use the Clone Tool on the image layer a couple of times.
    4.  You don't like how it came out, so you click on the same History step that was active during step 1.
    5.  You try to Clone again, but you find that the History change has caused the Adjustment layer to be selected as it was before step 2.
The real base issue is that since the Clone Tool is still selected, we tend to think we can just keep cloning after going back in the History, when in fact we really need to repeat step 2 again.  On paper this seems pretty straightforward, but in practice one almost never remembers to check which layer is selected.
Maybe an option to store the layer selections as History steps would help with this.  Then we would tend to go back to just after the proper layer was selected.

  • Backwards Navigation and automatic marking of "incomplete"

Hello and thank you for your help in advance.
Here is the scenario: a learner is on a question and they click the Back button and because we want them to be allowed to refer back to the material before answering the question OR they click the slide back button on the skin's playbar to refer back (either way it is the same error)....after referring back to the content, they have the answer in mind so they navigate back to the question and they are unable to answer it now because it says:
Furthermore, here are our current quiz preferences settings we have, you will notice that "Allow Backwards Navigation" IS checked off, I'm not sure what to do
The programming remedy you would think is that the "Allow backward movement" check mark does nothing but prompt you to hide the back buttons or display them, it does nothing in the background in regards to ignoring incomplete questions.  This check mark needs to also ignore incomplete questions when navigated away from the slide.

The Quiz scope concept I was not aware of, thanks for that!
I just have one final hangup to get thist to work.  I found a solution on a previous thread where you helped someone, their workaround is as follows:
"I put a white button with white frame on a white background before the first quiz slide, and make it report to lms as 0 points, so it's a "hidden" button that does nothing. Now the user will never go out of "quiz scope".
I want to put this invisible button on the very first slide so that they will never go out of quiz scope no matter where they navigate, however I do not want it to add to the Quiz results total on the Quiz results slide (when I uncheck "Add to total" under Reporting for the Button's properties is still adds it to the total:
Also, I do not want it to add to the total number of questions on the progress indicator (the first question still says Question 2 of 4 when it should be the 1st question), finally I am not sure how this user above changed it to report to LMS as 0 points, when I try to change the points from 1 to 0 it always defaults back to 1, I also have unchecked "Report answers".   Once this is resolved the company will be full of happy Captivate users.
    Thank you for your help!

I am working in DW CS6.
I am creating a new page based on a template and when DW creates the new page, it is automatically changing the paths to the links to .css and .js files.  These changes are breaking the template.  Is there a way to keep the auto-changes from occurring?

Always set site links to "Document" unless you NEED "Site Root". If you don't know whether you need them, then you don't need them. When you understand that you need them and why you need them, then you can use "Site Root"!
    Good advice.

  • Looking for on-run and automatic state change methods

trying to get the mock application to run when you start it, no need to click or interact with it, also hoping to be able to jump to the next state when transitions are completed without needing any user interaction as well.
    Thanks
    -1k

On Load is a global event on the whole application, as you discovered.  We don't currently expose an event for "timeline done playing."
Here's an alternative to the workaround you came up with.  This is also not perfect, but more options never hurts :-)
    1) Put everything into a custom component
    2) Create states inside the custom component, with whatever animated transitions between them you want
    3) Back in the main app, add an On Load event that plays an Action Sequence
    4) In the Action Sequence's timeline, add Set Component State actions to walk the custom component through its various states
    5) Space these out far enough so that the component's animated state transitions finish playing before you jump to the next state

  • Photoshop "step backward" maintains current layer selection?

How about make Photoshop "step backward" command maintain current layer selection? So that when using the "step backward" to undo something it doesn't select a differnt layer. The current "step backward" layer change issue is annoying.

Seems a lot of people have this problem, and someone wrote a script to fix it.
    See here: http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1251347#post1251347
Also, note you need to copy the script in the Photoshop/Presets/Scripts folder for it to show in the Scripts menu. Once it's there, you can assign any keyboard shortcut to it - CTRL+Z of course

  • Make it so "Step Backward" does NOT change layers

Just migrated from CS to CS4. The one change that is KILLING my productivity is Adobe's decision to make "Step Backward" also revert to the prior layer. Previously, I could (when drawing with a brush on my tablet) just click "Step Backward" if I messed up a brushstroke, and give it another try. Now, if it's my first stroke in that layer, I often find myself 5 minutes later having spent all this time drawing in the wrong layer, because PS was "helpful" and not only undid my action (brushstroke), but ALSO undid my layer change!
Here's a simple solution for your programmers: Record layer changes as a separate step in History. That way, when I go into a different layer, draw, and then Step Backward, it undoes my brushstroke but NOT my layer change; a SECOND Step Backward would be necessary for that.
It seems what you're doing now is recording layer changes in the History in the one direction but not the other. Please make this consistent.

  • Undo/Step Backward will not work?

I've repeatedly tried to change the settings for Undo and Step Backwards to Command + Z and Command + Opt + Z respectively, though neither work. The setting changes don't save, either. What's wrong? Undo and Step Backward both haven't worked since the start.
What's with the not equals sign? I've followed all that I can with no results and it's driving me up the wall. I just want to be able to use these without having to erase every line as I go! Haha.

    Thanks for the explanation.
However, I am still puzzled as to how the programme can detect lack of time code when the tape was not even rewound or played. I belive the time code is written on the tape.
Anyway, I tried iMovie and found that the programme detects the camera and controls it. However, it does not recognise the downconverted DV signal. When I turned the DV conversion off, the video was detected and imported using MagicMovie in HD. I still have not gone round to burning on a DVD. ( I only read the article mentioned by Sue after having tried the iMovie programme - somehow the link that was so clearly stated in the reply missed my notice earlier on).
I have actually recorded the downconverted DV video on a standalone Phillips DVD recorder but the DVD only plays in that recorder and my Mac DVD Player even tho I have finalised the +R disk. The same problem occurs with a +RW disk.
I appreciate the replies and the explanations. Thanks.

Your file is most likely toast, but still:

If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,

exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
    etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster).

  • Combination of colour and print is a step backwards for me from Firefox 3

It's as if the screen is going to some sort of 7 bit version, and it seems to flicker when I look at it. I have problems with colours (red/green), so it may well be that. But Firefox 3 had a more pleasing colour/font combination and I'd like to go back to that if I'm to change to version 5 for good.

Yes, unfortunately that link you posted verifies the step backwards Apple is taking with Quicktime and its support for other formats.  Although it lists other codecs (such as the Animation codec) it also verifies that Quicktime must now convert these codecs into an entirely new Quicktime movie before it can play them.  Quicktime used to be able to play these video files natively.  Converting them into new files wastes drive space and in the case of a long clip (2 minutes or more) you must wait quite some time for Quicktime to convert the file before it plays.

  • Version 3.1.0.1007 of Skype is the worst yet and a massive step backwards!!

Version 3.1.0.1007 of Skype is the worst yet and a massive step backwards!!  This is what happens when a bloatware software company takes over small company with a good and efficient application. This was all too predictable - Microsoft should have stuck with Messenger (even that was better than this latest Skype turd) and left Skype alone! 1. Changing status involves opening Skype, then selecting "Settings", then "Options" and even then there's no "Away" or "Not Available" options!!! 2. The options to view a contact's profile appears to have vanished!3. Right clicking on the Skype icon on the task bar doesn't allow you to "Quit" Skype  and that's only 3 of the main issues!! Then there's no simple "List" view of contacts which means viewing them takes up far too much screen space and then scrolling through them - NO WAY will I be importing my 4,000 Outlook contacts! THAT IS IF THERE WAS A WAY TO INCLUDE THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE!! Clearly Microsoft STILL hasn't got the message..... it doesn't know better and PC users DON'T want to have the "Metro" interface continually rammed down their throats!!! PLEASE DO NOT RELEASE HALF BAKED SOFTWARE THAT FAILS TO EVEN MEET THE BASIC FUNCTIONALITY OF THE OLDER VERSION!!! I like much of what I've seen of  Windows 10 but this **bleep** really turns me off big time!!

My iPod Touch (4G, 8Gb) is only partially functioning, requiring multiple taps on icons to do anything, and apps are crashing often.  There is a thin white border that appears around icons when tapped once, then I must tap twice to activate. (that's 3 taps for what used to take 1)  I successfully completed all the Apple troubleshooting page steps, including reset and restore, but there was no change to its condition.  What can I do now?

Now that I think aboput it further, You may have an Accessibilty feature turned on.
    - Try triple clicking the Home button to see if that will allow access to the iPod so you can go to Settings>General>Restrictions to turn off all the Accessibilty features.
    - If not then connect the iPod to your computer and turn off the features. See:
