Step by step entry via a midi keyboard

I would like to enter notes in Garageband via a midi keyboard. I've not found the way to do it.
ON all my others sequencer program - Master Track Pro, Finale, - it is possible but I cannot with GarageBand. How can I do that?
I know it is possible with the pencil tool holding down the command(apple)key we can enter notes step by step.
I know too it is possible in real time, but I want the step by step entry mode when a passage is too difficult for me to play it.
Thanks.

Anyone knows if in a futre version of BG thoses features will be there?
i'm afraid the only people that know anything about any future version(s) would be under an NDA not to say anything about it.
i'd suggest using the Feedback MenuItem under the GarageBand menu to let the programmers at Apple know these are desired features.

  • Step Input Recording via an external keyboard?

    Hi there.
I'm having difficulty with inputting data from my midi keyboard to logic express. when i play the notes from my external MIDI keyboard notes register on the transport bar and I can hear the notes, however they will not appear in the piano roll window. I have followed the instructions from the brilliant book by David Nahmani and I have also read the manual and I cannot seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong.
I have the MIDI in button enabled and I also have the instrument track record enabled and I have the empty MIDI region created in the instrument track which I created using the pencil tool.
I saw a video online, which showed that the step input will not respond to the external keyboard until you actually go to Options - open the step input keyboard and press one of the keys and then your external MIDI keyboard can input notes.
I tried this and it worked, however I can just play the one note and the play head will move but when I play another note on the external keyboard Logic will again not register the note.
Can you please help me solve the issue
Sorry for the long winded question. I hope It makes sense and if not just ask
    Thanks in advance

The best place to ask would be in the Logic Express forum.

  • Problem with step input using MIDI Keyboard

    Hi,
I'm new to Logic Pro X and wanted to know how I can use my MIDI keyboard as a source of Step Input Recording.
I created a new software instrument track, then open Window - > Show step input keyboard.
If I click the keyboard on the screen, it records notes with no problem. However, if I play my MIDI keyboard while on-screen keyboard is shown, it does not record anything even though I hear the sound I played.
Is there anything I can do about this?
    Thanks!
    -Holly
EDIT : Actually I could solve the problem. I needed to click "MIDI IN" button on "MIDI Region" window.

    Holly,
Have you opened the Audio MIDI Setup app on your mac? It's found in your Launchpad app (on your doc) and Other folder it should be in there. Make sure your MIDI keyboard is recognized and configured for the mac. Also look at your MIDI settings within Logic as well.

  • MIDI Step Entry not showing window

So I follow the instructions in the manual for MIDI Step Entry, but I never see the window with the entry options (note length, etc.) Any idea?

Found what I needed. One thing I found in my setup is that if there is no prior MIDI region the step input will not record. I have to record a note, which creates a region, delete the note (or move it) and now I can step record.

  • My midi keyboard doesn't appear on my mac

My Midi Keyboard turns on when i connect it to my Macbook but my Macbook doesn't detect the keyboard when am on Garageband, What am i suppose to do?

GarageBand only see a MIDI Device when you OSX system recognizes it.
Open the Audio MIDI Setup utility (found in the /Application/Utilities/ folder). Open the MIDI Window (in the View Menu). If you don't see your MIDI Keyboard there, then you might need to install a proper Driver. Check with the manufacturer of your MIDI keyboard.
I assume that you plugin your Keyboard to the USB port of your MacBook. That's where it gets its power, but that still doesn't mean that it can communicate via MIDI.
I explain all those setup steps and the necessary information to understand all that in my manual "GarageBand X - How it Works"
    Hope that helps

  • External Midi keyboard connection to mac fails

I have a Roland RD-700gx stage piano which I use as a midi keyboard in Logic Pro 9. But now Logic doesn't recognise it anymore. The transport bar says there is 'no in'. Does anyone have an idea what has gone wrong here? So far I've only used the Roland as an external keyboard with usb (so not used sounds from the roland yet). Worked fine so far. I just upgraded to Lion, could that have something to do with it? Can anyone tell me how to make it work again? I forgot how I did it last time. I'm not very experienced with midi. Thanks for any help!

so you have it connected via USB? And is that direct, or a hub? If it's a hub, rule out (common) hub failure by bypassing it and going direct to the computer. After each step, check it with "Audio MIDI Setup" (utilities folder). Make sure the Roland is represented in Audio MIDI Setup with an icon of it's own. If not you would need to "add device" at the top of the A.M.S. window. Next would be to try a different cable.
If you're using an interface, does it have MIDI (5-pin) ports? I'm pretty sure your stage piano has them, you could get an old-school MIDI cable and try it that way. (midi out from piano to midi in on interface)
have you considered an animal sacrifice?

  • How do you connect a USB MIDI keyboard to iPad Air?

    Hello,
I can't get my USB keyboards to connect to my iPad Air.  I used to use the camera connection kit with my 1st gen iPad and it worked perfectly.  Now when trying to connect using my camera connector plugged into a lightning to 30 pin adapter with the iPad Air I get no response when trying to use my keyboards with Garageband, etc.  This seems like a step backwards!!!
Can anyone advise on how to use a USB MIDI keyboard with the iPad Air?
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Same problem here...
I just read on another forum that someone managed to connect a midi device using a simple converter.
I have a digital piano with the square type USB connector, bought an adapter to convert the iPad Air's ligtning USB cable's USB end to that square connector, plugged it in, GarageBand did not respond to the Midi input.
on a macbook pro it works ok, but would be nice to use the iPad now that I bought it...

  • Opinion on what to do with midi keyboard situation

So a few weeks ago I purchased a m audio axiom 61 midi keyboard to use with logic 9 on my mbp that is currently running snow leopard. I connect the keyboard through a usb cable and when doing so, the keyboard turns on but no noise comes out when I press the keys. When I hook up to the keyboard to any computer running leopard it works fine, the problem is only when I hook it up to computers running snow leopard.
The keyboard is class compliant so there are no drivers, updates, or software that will make it work. After searching all over the internet these past few weeks for a solutions and having a horrible response in terms of customer service from m audio I have basically lost hope in terms of having this keyboard work with my computer.
I am asking what you guys think the best solution is for this problem. I'm debating either having to purchase a leopard install disc just to downgrade so it will run with my computer or selling the keyboard and just purchasing another one from a different company that will work with my computer by default. Both of these solutions would be a nuisance and I'm not looking forward to going through the steps for either.
What do you guys think I should do, and if you have any ideas on what to do please let me know.
    Thank you.
    -Brian

I think we need to slow down here. You do not need to open Audio MIDI setup to test if the board works. Plug the thing in, open Logic, and simply look down in the transport window while you press some keys. You should see Note numbers flash just to the left of the CPU meters.
This is the critical step. CoreMidi is smart enough to know what is going on without even opening Audio MIDI Setup first. I do it all the time. I plug my M-Audio 02 keyboard in to the mac with a cable, and instantly get at least the notes coming into Logic in the transport as I described.
If you get the notes recognized, then your Axiom is fine.
As far as sound goes, that's a whole different story. You will get no sound in Logic unless you do several things first. I won't go into them all here, as I'm hoping you already know about going to the Preferences button at the top left of the screen and choosing Audio... from the list. Core Audio will come up and you can make sure you have Built-in Input selected since you don't have an external interface.
Then make a new track, choose a Soft Instrument, and a piano or something, and play away.
Audio Midi Setup control panel is for setting the SYSTEM's audio midi settings. Logic uses it's own settings. You need to set both to the same thing ideally.
But, say you get a firewire interface. Hook it up, go to Audio Midi Setup, you choose it as your choice of audio interface, and done....but Logic will still have Built-in Input set and you will hear nothing...so you have to again go and change it in Preferences > Audio.
bottom line, I use GarageBand as my test bed for things like this. It's a bit more "direct". The first track it puts in the line for you is a Piano...so you just plug the axiom in, and start playing.
Verify for us that you are getting note recognition in the Transport area.
One last thing - do you have a bunch of stuff plugged into the USB port with the Axiom? There is always the possibility there isn't enough bandwidth for the board to work if you have a scanner, iPhone, card reader, digital camera and keyboard/mouse all plugged in...longshot, but worth a mention.

  • MIDI Keyboard off Pitch

When I play a virtual instrument through either GarageBand or Pro Tools SE, the pitch is off 1 full step higher.  Middle C become D.  I'm using iConrol as a MIDI device.  I've been trying in all three products including Apple MIDI set up, but cannot figure out how to change this.  Has anyone had this problem and offer a solution?

  • How do I use my computer keyboard instead of a MIDI keyboard to enter notes? In Garage Band I simply go to View - musical typing but there is no such prompt in Logic Pro 7.

Ihave always used my Logic Pro 7 program with a MIDI keyboard for note entry. I do not presently have a MIDI keyboard and wish to use my computer keyboard for note entry. I know this is possible but cannot recall the command to set that up. Can anyone refresh my memory? I know that on Garageband on just need to go to view - musical typing but that is not the command in Logic Pro.

  • Macbook no longer recognizes my midi keyboard

Hello folks. I'm having this problem where my macbook no longer recognizes my midi keyboard (M-Audio Radium 61.) I've had it working fine in the past through this midi to usb converter, and now the usb converter still lights up and shows data flowing when I have it plugged in, but for some reason the computer just doesn't seem to see it. The macbook also doesn't see this aggregate device I had working the other day too. But it sees other aggregate devices that are made up of the same outboard audio interfaces I have. Sunday was the first time I had my whole setup working with the keyboard running into Reason, out to Ardour via Jackpilot and out through my audio interface via the aggregate device (which is actually just made up of the inputs and outputs of my M-Audio FastTrack Pro because for some reason the computer sees them as separate devices... different point of contention...) Anyway, so now today was the first time I tried to set it all up the same way again since Sunday and I can't get them working. Any thoughts?

Use a data recovery product such as the ones listed here, and then get a replacement drive.

  • Osx 10.6.8 m audio midi keyboard issue, not recognised

    hi
after updating the OS to the latest snow leopard i'm no longer able to use my midi keyboard (M-AUDIO Radium 61 usb powered)
i'm using an M-Audio fast track pro usb external audio device and when i plug the midi cable, coming from the keyboard, none of my softwares recognise it (Logic pro, Ableton, Reason).
the monitor led for the midi signal is flashing indicating that signal is received but no signal at all seems to be sent to the OS.
i initially thought it might have been the audio device driver: outdated for the running osx (audio ins and outputs where behaving correctly anyway) and did update it. No changes
i've also downloaded the latest keyboard's drivers (for osx 10.6.8 32bit), wich seemed superfluous to me since i'm using it via midi cable only, with no results.
Tried by repairing disk permissions as well in disk utility (just in case..)
tried my devices on a diffrent macbook installing an older version of snow leopard and they're doing theyr job properly
tried using a Midi to USB cable converter instead (was working on the other computer)
i don't have (i'm not sure at least) a backup for the previous osx upgrade to restore (is there a way to find out what version of the os is backed up within time machine?)
any help will be highly appreciated

the issue persists with Lion os 10.7.3

  • Struggling to get a signal from my Midi Keyboard

I have Logic Pro X and a couple of weeks ago managed to successfully connect up by Korg Workstation to act as a Midi Keyboard so that I could access the library and play the sounds in real time  through the keyboard. I have just moved my studio to a new room and tried reconnecting and I am just not getting things to work at all now.
My method has been go into my Midi set up for my Mac and connect by Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 interface . I have tested the connections and the Korg is speaking just fine to the interface. I saw a video on Youtube where in Logic X it is possible now to access the external instrument via  a Software Instrument Track instead of an External Midi track + Audio ( as it used to be) . When I do that and replace the default electric piano  with an External Instrument it finds the Korg just fine. I have collaged the various windows below. This is what I did last time and it was successful.
I have the record button primed but am getting no signal - not a flicker of life on the  I am no doubt doing something really basic but I cant figure out what to do and its very frustrating that I have had this working just a week or so ago. Help!

The problem is most likely with your router.  Follow the instructions in the router's manual to reset it.  Also what security are you using?  If it's WEP upgrade to WPA.  The iPod sometimes has trouble with WEP "protected" routers.  I put "protected" in quotation marks because WEP security is essentially useless.  It can be hacked in less that 30 seconds.

  • How can I build a drum pattern in Ultrabeat with my midi keyboard?

So I was just wondering if I was able to build a drum beat in Ultrabeat with my midi keyboard, kinda "on the fly" as it's replaying..... For example, if I want to add some percussion in the pattern but while it's playing. Is there any way that Ultrabeat can just record in items I want via the midi board instead of clicking on the part with my mouse? It would just be much easier this way.... Thanks!

It's a shame you can't record into Ultrabeat's sequencer in realtime using a MIDI controller.
But, as CCTM says you can record into Logic's Arrange and other Editors. One to use may be the Hyper Editor. Not as pretty to look at but very similar in functionality to UB's seq.
If you need to manage your recorded sequences you can always add the recorded region to your Apple Loops Library.
