About the only thing that "might" be able to do is upgrade the SSD. OWC sells SSD upgrades for that unit. You would have to contact Apple though to verify that no warranty issues would apply when making the upgrade.

MacBook Core Duo vs. MacBook Core Duo 2: does it matter?

I'm poised and ready to click BUY, but I still have a couple of questions. I'm moving on from my iBook G4, to a MacBook. I thought I was ready to go for the new MacBook Core Duo 2, but then I saw the refurbished MacBook Core Duo--and a refurbished MacBook Pro for the same price as a new MacBook. Now I'm confused all over again!
So, what's the major change between Core Duo and Core Duo 2? And is it possible for the MacBook Pro to be too much computer for me? In addition to the usual Apple stuff, I use Microsoft Office 2004, Photoshop Elements 4.0, and FileMaker Pro 8.5.
One last question, is it true that the text appears smaller on the MacBook than on the iBook G4?

In case anyone is interested--I ended up buying the MacBook Core Duo 2, 1.83, with an upgrade to 1MB. I was THIS CLOSE to getting the refurbished one, until I found out that the Core Duo 2 runs cooler than the original. Since I use my soon-to-be-replaced iBook on my lap 101% of the time, temperature was a huge consideration for me. In fact, when I first made the switch to a laptop, I bought a PowerBook and returned it after, oh, an HOUR of use, due to first degree burns (okay, not quite). When I called Apple, they told me that the computer was not a LAPtop, but rather a portable computer. I "ported" it right back to them.
Wish me luck with my new MacBook!!! I'll come back and let you know how it goes--good, bad, or otherwise! (I always feel like not enough people post good news...)

Apple Software Specialist. They may be able to ship
you Leopard so that you can synch your new iPhone
to you own computer. Have the serial numbers of your
Mac and iPhone written down and ready for them.
As far as transferring data to your husbands MacBook
so that you can sync your iPhone on it I am really not
sure. Seems like a lot of trouble to get your data onto
your iPhone.

Leopard roars on macbook core duo

Hi folks
just to inform you, I have a macbook core duo 1.83 Ghz with 1Gb RAM and wondered whether Leopard would be okay for it. Well, I just upgraded and after numerous updates I can confirm that they did a great job, no speed loss so far detected.
I could not find any info about this topic on the net so that's why I posted this message.

How much of a difference is there between 2 GB and 3 GB RAM in Macbook Core Duo 2 GHz

I upgraded the memory in a Macbook Core Duo 2.0 to 2 GB, as per Apple specs, but now find that the unit could handle 3 GB. Is there a significant difference between 2 GB and 3 GB running Tiger and for light uses such as word processing and web surfing? Would it be worth the expense upgrading to 3 GB? Also, could such an upgrade be done with a 2 GB stick plus a 1 GB stick or do the two sticks have to be identical?

OWC tests have found that there is a slight speed increase with having two 2gb sticks in rather than one 1gb and one 2gb. Your model is in the gray lines at the bottom of the graph. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Memory_Benchmark/Apple_MacBook/
You can put two 2gb RAM sticks in your model 2,1 but it can only use 3,3gb. This is a hardware limitation and cannot be changed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_GB_barrier
To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier.

Refurbished MacBook Core Duo or New MacBook Core 2 Duo w/Edu Discount?

I'm interested in getting an Apple notebook for school and can't decide whether to get the new MacBook Core 2 Duo and use my student discount or just get a refurbished MacBook Core Duo for a few hundred less. Is the Core 2 Duo chip worth the extra money? I plan on using it for my design courses, which use the Adobe and Macromedia suite of applications. Oh, and I plan on playing WoW on it as well.

Well theres a few important details here:
What version of the Core Duo were you after (Basic Middle or Black) for refurb?
What version are you thinking of for the Edu Discount?
Personally i'm going to university next year and am Planning on buying a Macbook in about March or June (What ever model is out then hopefully a 3rd revision). But from what is out the greatest value out of all Macbooks to date is the Middle Version of the MBC2D.
In the Core Duo generation, the jump from basic to Middle wasn't big. You got a slightly faster processor and Super Drive. Now for the same price difference you not only get the bonus C2D processor you get 1GB of Ram, A Superdrive, and a 80 GB Hard drive. For that reason, the best value i would say is the middle version of the C2D Macbooks.
You may not think that you really need 1 GB of Ram or a 80 GB Harddrive but after using a mac mini (which i unfortunately returned) I quickly realized how slow these machines are without sufficient ram. If you plan on using the Adobe suite which is not yet UB you will have a rough time without at least one gig of ram. By then it would probably be UB, but still, programs like Photoshop and Cinema 4D (If you are taking any computer animation courses) will not run well with just 512 MBs. Leopard, i'm expecting will also recommend aproximately 1 Gig of ram. If you plan on playing WoW and doing Work (Exactly what i'm planning on doing on MB) i'd go for 1 Gig of ram at least no matter what generation you get. The 80 Gigs is also in my opinion required if your running bootcamp. 60 Gig HD is insufficient, because, after being formated and having both Mac OSX and Windows XP (Or Vista) on it, the 60 GB HD may end up as more of 52 Gig HD which isn't much space to devide between to Operating Systems. (After installing +your suites that gives you like 45 Gigs to split+Music or videos you may have... brings you down to like 37 GBs + the 10 Gigs you should keep free for your computer to run fine that gives you about 27 Gigs to devide as freem space). If you plan on only running OSX then 60 Gigs should be sufficient if your not doing video editing. But if you want to run Bootcamp I'd get at least 80 Gigs (I'd go with 120 but the jump in price from 80 to 120 is huge compared the jump from 60 to 80). This is why i think the Middle CD2 is the best Macbook because you get 80 GB HD with 1 Gig of ram, a faster processor and they throw in your Superdrive from a relatively small jump in price. When looking to make a purchase try to get the cheap upgrades if they will help (Eg. a 80 Gig HD over a 60 gig HD for a small price) and try to stay away from expensive premium upgrades (120 GiG HD for much more money- unless you really need it).

MacBook core duo Sept. 2006 - the audio is a mystery. Any analogue out has bass boost with bass distortion. With digital out, by USB or Airport Express Airtunes, the frequency response is normal. Somewhere, Apple put in an analogue bass boost.. why?!

Since new, my Macbook core duo has sent all audio to all analogue outputs with frequency distortion. Some physical hardware or firmware in the analogue section adds a bass boost to the frequency response of the audio.... And, this boost adds bass frequency distortion to most, if not all, of the audio analogue output.
This happens for all audio sources, players, iTunes, videos, streaming audio/video, movies... any sound source available to the Macbook. No-one with whom I have talked about this problem, has ever heard of it. Not elegant ideas for reducing it are to use equalisers on players and iTunes. iTunes even has a preprogrammed "bass reduce" on its equaliser, as if it knows already that this inherent bass boost "feature" has been built into the Macbook, and cannot be defeated by the user.
The digital audio is of sufficiently high quality to play well on a very good to excellent sound-system; so, it's a shame someone has mucked around with the frequency response of the analogue conversion, by designing the frequency distortion right into the computer. This motherboard, (which includes the sound-section), has been replaced, along with the speakers, and everything sounds exactly the same as it was before.
To receive a flat frequency response and no frequency distortion, I listen on one receiver using Airtunes, (it doesn't matter whether or not the analogue or digital output jack is wired analogue or connected via optical cable.... the freq. response is flat); and I listen on a high-end stereo system using an USB output port to an A/D converter, passing the analogue result using long patch-cords connected to the "line-in" jacks of the stereo. The bummer is that most of my audio sources are not derived from iTunes... hence, I cannot use Airtunes with Airport express for them. I've tried using "Airfoil" without luck. The sound becomes distorted with sibilance and other frequency anomalies.
Question: has anyone else discovered this sound imperfection in any Mac product? And, does anyone know if Apple is aware of it? Finally, has anyone found an Apple fix for the problem; or, at least, come up with better solutions than I have?

all Intel-Macs, with the exception of the Mac Pro, use the same kind of RAM-Modules .
Specs are: 200-pin DDR2 SDRAM SO-DIMMs up to 1.25” in height. The SO-DIMMs must be DDR2-667 (PC2-5300) compliant and must be unbuffered, unregistered, 8-byte, nonparity, and non-ECC.
So feel free to swap.

The original macbook (core duo) does not support 'n' speeds correct? I have applied the update and profiler lists my airport card as 'extreme' but I seem to be able to connect only at 'g' speeds.

Actually the standard for 128 bit WEP specifies a 13 ASCII character (or 26 hexadecimal character) password. This is nothing new.
Given the 13-character requirement, does that mean only WPA security can be used in a wireless environment containing both PC's and Mac's?
No. However using WPA drastically increases the probability of connecting w/o problems since there are many WEP inconsistencies.

Run an Apple Hardware Test using the original installation disk that has the AHT instructions on it.

I have an early model Core Duo MacBook (about 18 months old) and I've increased the HD to 160 GB, split into two partitions for OS X and XP. No problems.

I am trying to install bootcamp with windows xp professional on my macbook core duo. This is my first mac and i just purchased it. The disk will partition but when i try to start the installer a white screen appears then a folder with a ? in it appears

I just recently purchased this macbook. The optical drive was faulty, i opened it up and rubbed alcohol on the lens and that didnt work. I connected an old ide dvd rw drive in a 3.5 enclosure and it seems to work like a charm. I installed snow leopard with it so i know that it is in complete working order. I also upgraded the ram so that should not be an issue either. This is a first generation macbook 1.1 with the core duo processor. I just want to install my xp professional operating system onto this unit. I have the original xp professional disk with service pack 2, not a burned iso. When i try to launch the windows installer the dvd drive fires up and it seems like its attempting to launch windows then the screen goes from bright white to a folder with a question mark on it. From there nothing happens. Is there something i can do or that i am missing here?

Your problem is not Boot Camp, in fact, is your optical drive. Win XP requires indeed sp2, but also the internal drive, does not work from external optical drive.
For other possible tricks, please use the appropriate Boot Camp forum, not here. Mac OS X may be installed from both external and internal optical drive and/or internal/external partition of a disk, any disk. Windows is not so generous.

Leopard ruined my black macbook Core Duo's OS!

I have the first generation MB Core duo, the black one.
I got the Leopard Upgrade, tried to install it on my previous Tiger system, while checking the drive integrity i got a error that the disc can not be read, asking to clean it.
So i decided to take it out so i rebooted the computer successfully ejecting the Leopard DVD.
But now when i try to boot up the Macbook all i see is a black screen with a message saying;

Can anyone advise on what to do about this, i had a perfectly running Tiger system and user account on this machine before getting the Leopard upgrade.

i did that on the phone with apple support (i have apple care) and it fixed everything but the system still did not boot.
The guy said to take it to a repair center in case the motherboard needs to be replaced.
But when i took it to a local repair place in France where i am at the moment, that guy said it is a user fault issue and wanted to charge me for a Leopard Install since the machine did not start up and it looks like the system was corrupted.
So now i am trying to install a clone of my MBP to the MB via target mode in hopes that it will work., and if the DVD player or something else is not working i will then verify that Apple does need to address this., i do not have the original install discs since i am only visiting friends out here and left it back home.
