Step by Step Setup Apple OS X.5.8 Mail.app for Verizon's New Security Settings

This is how I have done it (from http://verizon.com/emailsettings)
You'll need the following email settings:
Incoming mail server (POP3): incoming.verizon.net
Incoming Server Port Numbers: 995
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): outgoing.verizon.net
Outgoing Server Port Numbers: 465 Why is this important?
Make sure SSL encryption is enabled for the incoming and outgoing mail server.
In my Mac (a Quicksilver 2002 Dual 1GHz) under Leopard OS X 10.5.8 ...
Mail.app > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced
Choose "Use SSL" ... that changes the Port to 995
I did that for each of my current e-mail Accounts.
Also ...
Mail.app > Accounts > Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) > Edit Server List ...
For each Server Named:
Choose "Use custom port" ... and enter 465
AND
Choose "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)"
For for the record, "POP3" does not show up as an Incoming Server, only "POP" for my Accounts.
I believe this is what Verizon is asking for ...

Excellent. This works great. I did have to fish around for the actual settings on the outgoing server(s), since that step was missing from your instructions. Thanks for the explanation - I see that Verizon would not supply a Mac explanation (only Windows).

Go to System prefs
Select Mail Contacts and Calendars
Then select Other
Then select "Add a Mail Account and click create
Then go to google for the settings you need:

These are instructions for Mail 4.0 but all of the necessary settings should be listed.

What are you trying to sign into using Safari?
Did you change the email on your existing Apple ID or create a new Apple ID?
What "app button" are you talking about?

Mail.app and Verizon / Yahoo email account setup

I've searched and searched on here and still can't find a proper (or updated) answer to the question. (Newest answers I found were for 10.4.4 involving keychain access-which I tried...)
Why won't my @verizon.net account work with Mail.app?
I can login using verizon's online mail, but can't use the verizon-supplied settings to receive the mail through mail.app.

Couldn't find what port settings to use...

I think I might have found a solution. For some reason, it appears the outgoing mail server doesn't like to have the same login as the DSL setup account. I switched my outgoing account to a secondary account (my setup account is jsichol, but I used joesichol as my outgoing.)
(It is working as of now, but I've seen others on here who got it to work for a couple of days before it crapped out.)
I am actually using the verizon account linked with a yahoo account, so my ingoing and outgoing accounts are *coming.yahoo.verizon.net.
I really hope this works and that others find this thread useful.

as we did a notice , the new macbook pro from 2006 november had a degradation in quality for the build in speakers.
apple decided to take away 75% of the EQ from these new macbookpro build in speakerset.
what we have left is not much to hear...
i stick to my may 2006 version , just because for this reason . i need these high quality speakers.
this is a large step back ,, i just wonder why ? its sad !

I find the sound to be very good on my MBP C2D. As for 'hi-fi', they are stereo speakers, better still I was watching a DVD last night through built in speakers.
The THX intro with the little mechanical man started, he was flying around all over the place and he even sounded like he was behind me when he flew off right side and came in the front left side.
I was amazed that the MBP could create this effect with limited speakers.
I demonstrated the effect to some friends and they agreed the sound from the MBP was 'fantastic'

How can i change my apple id? and delete a try for creating a new one?

I need to change apple id. Been clever enough to find out where to do it.
But unfortunally i tryed to create a new one instead a month ago.
The outcome of that is that i now cant change my apple id because it says that the user name is allready in use.
I did not verify my attempt to create a new apple id so i whould like it to be deletet so that i can change my old one instead of creating a new one!

If these are both yours on the same account then give them different names so iTunes can tell them apart.
If the sync was an accident then do a "wipe" of the other iPad and set it up as new under a different ID and make sure iTunes knows it's a different accout, that is set it up as one, before you begin the sync.

I want to enable forwarding of my apple ID email address to a different email app. How do I set up apple mail to forward emails to a different app like Gmail, etc?

If it's disabled then you might be able to re-enable it via this page : http://appleid.apple.com, then 'reset your password'
You might then need to log out of your account on your iOS device by tapping on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Stores and then log back in so as to 'refresh' the account on it
If that doesn't fix it then you might need to contact iTunes Support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page

I was wondering if Apple was going to make a app for the Blue Ant Bluetooth Device.

I think thid would be a great idea since the Android Market has it and is really useful while driving and able to reply by speaking to the bluetooth.

It would be up to Blue Ant to make the app.

when you set it up, using the same apple ID you used for the old one, you will have two choices, set up as new or restore from the backup of your old one. Choose that and your new one will be a near clone of the old one.
Beyond that, signed in with the same apple ID as your old one, you can redownload your content and apps (providing they're still available in the app store/itunes)

Installed latest Apple software updates, now my mail accounts will not open. No settings, addresses, passwords, etc. were changed. Help!

This morning I downloaded the latest Apple software updates. After the computer restarted, I cannot send/receive emails through Mail. I can, however, send emails through the Yahoo webpage. Nothing (user names, email address, password, etc.) was changed after the download/installation. I can get on the internet and my iPad works just fine, just not Mail.

That toolbar/ct plugin seems to cause problems for all who install it!
Just in case you missed some of the files:
Close Safari, then locate and delete the following files and it should be gone:
/Library/Application Support/Conduit
/Library/InputManagers/CTLoader
/Library/Receipts/ctloader.pkg
/Library/Receipts/<Toolbar name>.pkg

where / is your the root library on your Hard Disk.

Since Apple already has a SMS/MMS app for the iPhone, which can be used over WiFi, can the same app be installed on the iPad 2?

I have an iPhone 3GS, and realized I do most of my SMS/MMS messaging at home, when connected to my WiFi. Then I began to think, if I'm using the messaging app over WiFi, can the SAME app (which, personally I like much better than the third party apps) be installed on the iPad 2 (which I'm still waiting from back order)?

Incorrect.
SMS/MMS is exchanged over the same network as calls.
"Dumb" phones or phones not in the smart category that don't have internet access in any shape, form, or fashion can exchange SMS/MMS.
Since SMS/MMS (a poor man's email with cell phones since it is very limited) is a cash cow for carriers and very profitable, why wouldn't cell phone carriers be interested in including SMS/MMS as an additional option (and of course at an additional expense) with a data plan only for the iPad? They certainly are interested in it but they can't since SMS/MMS is exchanged over the same network as calls.

HOW do you rename a URL in an email? Please list all the steps starting with opening a new email in Mail. I clicked on Add Hyperlink...in the Edit menu. I put in the URL. All that happened was that it put that whole URL into my email. Then I typed the name that I wanted to rename the link to in the email and highlighted it. Then I clicked on Add Hyperlink again and put the URL into that box. It LOOKED like the rename was an active link in the email that I sent to both myself and to my husband's computer. NEITHER email was able to access the web site using what looked like the renamed link. There has to be a way to identify the URL...AND "translate" that into the renamed link. All that Add Hyperlink does is let you type in the URL. That does not make it show up as something else. What am I missing here?
So would you mind listing ALL the steps in detail, starting with opening a New email? What do you do to indicate what you want to rename it to?

When you are composing an email in Apple's Mail.app email program, if you paste in a full URL, including the http:// at the beginning, it will work as a clickable link in the email you send. However, it will not be clickable in the window where you compose the email, only in the email that your recipient recieves.
Test it. Type a full URL into an email in Mail.app, for example:
http://www.apple.com
It won't appear to be clickable in that composing window. But send that email to yourself. You'll see that in the email you receive, that link will be clickable.
Note: This is somewhat dependent on the email program your recipient is using. Some will block links from being clickable. That's not something you can control. But most email programs will allow it to be a clickable link.

"The device could not send the test e-mail message. (EmailAccounts-timeout)" when going through the full setup, and "The device could not send the test e-mail message." when testing the account after creating it from the "Outgoing Email Profiles" tab.
No changes.
I can't cofigure the printer to send emails out using the email adress we have created exclusively for it with our domain name in Google Apps for your domain. The settings test ok for the email alerts.
I'm using these settings:
Server: smtp.google.com
Port: 587 (also tried 465)
username: [email protected]
good password, copied and pasted to make sure there are no typo's.

HT1947 Apple TV (2nd gen) and Remote App - no more connection

Since updating to the latest version of Apple TV (2nd gen) and Remote App for iPhone or iPad I can't connect any more. Worked for a short moment after restarting a few times but now no more. Must be a new bug, because it always worked before updating to iOS 5.1!
I tried with an iPhone 4S and and iPad 2.

Hi and thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately this didn't solve the issue. I tried almost everything now:
- I rebooted the WIFI rooter
- I resettled the apple TV
- I removed the cables of apple tv for a minute (I have a switch anyway to cut power off completely)
- I killed the remote app on the iPhone and iPad a few times
- I removed my account settings both on the i-devices and apple tv for home sharing a few times and activated them again
All of the devices are in the same wifi network and every device can connect perfectly to the internet.
The screen on the iPhone/iPad always just shows that I should activate home sharing on iTunes on the computer or on the apple tv with my account (what I did as mentioned above)
Any ideas, someone from Apple maybe?
