Step by Step way to reformat by Macbook (Urgent!)

Hey Guys,
Last week when i tried to turn my Macbook on it froze at the loading screen. My windows side works fine and it is only the Mac side. I went to the store and they said i need to erase my disk and start again. I have never reformatted my Mac computer before and im stuck. Because i cant get on my Mac side, im using the install disk and holding down C. I choose disk utility and click my HD on the left. Under the Erase option, there is:
Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Mac OS Extended
Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)
Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive)
I just want my Mac back to how i bought it. Can someone please guide me through this process?
Thanks so much!

Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format, and then use the install disk to restore Mac OS X and all of the bundled software.

  • What is the best way to reformat my macbook and reinstall?

I run a Macbook on OS X Lion which I installed via the app store. How can I reformat my Macbook and reinstall OS X Lion without the disc? Secondly, How can I then upload my TimeMachine backup so it was the same as before?
Will this repair all disc permissions and ensure maximum performance from my computer?

You must create your Lion install disk, before.  Read here how you can:

  • In the process of reformatting my macbook pro, I saved everything but my keyword list.  The keywords are with the images, but the total list I use under "Keywords" is not present.  Is there a way to re-create all my keywords I've used over the last 6 year

In the process of reformatting my macbook pro, I saved everything but my keyword list.  The keywords are with the images, but the total list I use under "Keywords" is not present.  Is there a way to re-create all my keywords I've used over the last 6 years.

I accomplished what I needed last night.  I remembered I had picked my favorite images from each year and put them in a "favorite" folder by year.  These folders included 500 to 1200 images per year.  I pulled up the folder for each year and highlighted all images and clicked on "Keywords" and all keywords used for all images were listed.  I made those keywords persistent.  It took me a while to realize I had to click on each keyword to make it persistent.  After doing this for all years, I assume 95% of all keywords I have used over the many years were back in my list.  I'm sure there is probably a more "technical" way to accomplish what I needed, but this seems to have worked.  I also exported my list into a word document and is saved on my hard drive.
If I had not made folders with my favorite images for each year, I could not have used this method, so if you figure out a better way, I like to hear it.  Thanks for your comments and willingness to help.

  • How to: Reformat my Macbook Pro 10.7.4

    hey guys
i know this question has been asked alot but i cant seem to find an exact answer to my question. i have a macbook pro late 2008 with OS Lion install and im currently copying everything i want to save on an external harddrive, but cant seem to find find a way to reformat my MBP. i got lion of the app store and know that i cant just wipe de HD with Disk Utilities because i wont be able to reinstall OS Lion, on the net they keep talking about LION RECOVERY DISK ASSISTANCE but they say you need to have a recovery saved or somthing of the sort... isnt their just a simple CLICK TO REFORMAT BACK TO SCRATCH WITH OSX LION RE-INSTALLED?
    thanks for your help.
    Sean

You can format your Lion partition because you don't need it to download Lion again. Boot in recovery mode pressing Command and R keys, format the partition using Disk Utility (it's called Macintosh HD if you didn't modify it) and reinstall. Note that your computer will download Lion, so the process could be long. When you have installed it, you can restore a Time Machine backup (if you did one) or restore your files of your external drive manually if you didn't activate Time Machine

  • How do I reformat a macbook air to original factory settings?

I am trying to reformat my macbook air to original factory settings. I don't need to use any of the files currently on the HD, so just a clean wipe is all I need. Can anyone help?

I think there is two ways of doing this. The first way would be using your disk that came with your MacBook Air and it would also be the best way since that will ensure that everything is back to normal factory settings, however if you don't have the disk you might just wanna try another method. The other method is creating a new user account named "Administator" (or whatever you prefer) and then logging into that account and deleting your account (the one that your trying to restore). This will delete all files and user-prefrences.
*Note: Method 2 won't delete any applications, to do this you would need to use an app called AppCleaner.

  • How to reformat a Macbook pro 2011 hard drive?

    Hello,
How do you reformat a MacBook Pro (OS X 10.7.3) 2011s Hard drive? I already backed up all the files I wanted to save. But since I have the new Macbook pro 2011 (only a few months since I got it) it didn't come with an installation disc, but instead already came with all the applications. I'm wondering how to reformat the hard drive so it wipes out everything and I can start fresh and what would happen to all the applications?

Well Lion has a Lion Recovery Partition on the drive you can access by holding command r and booting, there you can erase the Lion OS X partition completely (all files and programs) and reinstall Lion or simply reinstall Lion if there is a issue with it (no programs or files are touched in this second procedure)
Lion is downloaded from apple's servers, you need AppleID and a fast reliable internet connection with no bandwidth caps limiting you.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
If you want to replace the drive, there is software called Carbon Copy Cloner than can clone both the Lion OS X Partition and the Lion Recovery Partition to a external drive intact (excpet what's in the Trash, no Filevualt, no bootcamp, use free Winclone for that)
Hold the option key and you can boot from the external drive and format and clone everything to the new internal drive. TimeMachine of 10.7.2 and later can be booted from it's Lion Recovery Parttion as well just to restore only, cloning is better process because it gives full access to everything like before on the internal drive.

Some newer Mac's have Lion Internet recovery built in where the firmware will install the Lion Recovery/OS back onto a completely blank/new hard drive.

  • Does anyone else think that the AppleMac group of products are marketed in a greedy way? I have MacBook Pro 10.5.8 and am now told that I have to upgrade to Snow Leopard to sync my new iPad. Of course there isn't enough memory on the MacBook? I'm angry!

Does anyone else think that the AppleMac group of products are marketed in a greedy way? I have MacBook Pro 10.5.8 with Leopard and am now told that I have to upgrade to Snow Leopard so that my system can download the relevant iTunes upgrade to sync my new iPad and get my audiobooks (which don't appear anywhere on the device right now). Of course there isn't enough memory on the MacBook and Snow Leopard costs more also? I don't have financial resources to pay for all the new memory requirement and related upgrades they say I need just to sync my iPad with my purchases.

Thanks for the reply but I already knew this. $20 for Snow Leopard which asks for 5gb free memory. I can only see that I have 4 gb (which I feel is rather a pathetic amount of available memory for any computer). To upgrade this computer's memory will cost another fee (I haven't researched this yet but gather it's more than $20). Then of course I could also be told that the OSX Mackbook Pro that I have can't be memory upgraded - which means I'm being told to buy a new computer - hence my very frustrated last email. I have been given a lovely iPad 2 as a present and now can't sync at all with anything because of this ongoing upgrade nightmare. How on earth am I going to be able to sync my movies, audiobooks etc to this new device??

  • What is the best way to connect a MacBook Pro to my HiFi system ?

    Hi,
I'm new to Apple support communities having just bought my first Macbook Pro (a 17" 2.5GHz i7 model) and this is my very first community post.
Im a bit of a Hi-Fi enthusiast, so, with my new MacBook Pro I've taken the opportunity of completely reloading my iTunes library in high quality Apple Lossless format. Took a while but now I've completed the task Im pleased I've done it.
My question is, what is the best way to connect a Macbook Pro to a high quality Hi-Fi preamp - my Hi-fi system is musical Fidelity, and the pre amp (an A5  CR Pre amp) and this pre amp, which has superb audio quality, only has analogue phono inputs ?
I'm interested to understand what both the wired and wireless connection options are. I'm guessing one option must be to use the headphone output, but I have no idea if the output from the headphone socket on my new macbook (which is presumably designed to drive headphones) would be at a suitable level for a phono line level input ?
Ive also read a few comments about using digital connection - and my second question would be - what is the audio digital connection on my macbook ?
Aplogies if this question has been asked lots of times before but I've looked through some previous posts and can't find any answers in simple and straightforward language concentrating on the issue of connecting a MacBook Pro to an analogue phono pre amp input ?
Thanks in anticipation of some advice.

What is the best way to connect a MacBook Pro to my HiFi system?
Look at the back of the reciever and see what your connection options are, the front headphone jack is output usually.
The Mac's  analog audio in/out ports doubles as a optical in/out ports.
The analog won't over power your amp, it's just a headphonejack, like a powered mic, just enough power to get the signal to the destination in one piece.
Since you have a analog amp, your stuck with inferior analog connections, however you mentioned you wish to listen to the best sound quality of your lossless music.
To do that your going to need a decent surround sound system with Toslink optical import jacks, a Toslink stereo jack to regular Toslink adapter, Toslink cable and enable the optical output in your System Preferences >Sound
Another method is to use a Airport Express, it also has duo analog/opical out port. Then set up the Airport Express for iTunes streaming using the Airport Utility, then in iTunes setup the lower right corner one can set the connection.
I recommned a Harmon Kardon surround sound system, with their 100 watt satelight speakers and the 200 watt subwoofer. Enable the "concert hall" and other neat effects which will turn your 2.0 (stereo) iTunes music into 4 channel speaker sound filling the room with music and sending the lower channels to the subwoofer.
It will likely bring tears to your eyes that you can actually hear the full quality of your music as intended, I almost quarranty you will never want listen to music on a crappy iPhone or iPod again.
If a surround sound system is out of your budget, you can get by using the Harmon Kardon "Go Play" portable stereo and a analog stereo cable.
If your going to use your analog amp to power reference speakers, then there are various analog adapters of all sorts to make the appropriate connections once you know what they are, check out Radio Shack online for them.

What is the BEST way to get my macbook with lion on it, to communicate with my Canon 40D camera? It says the utility disk is a PowerPC app and that is no longer supported. What do I do now? I can't upload photos from my camera.

Also, I had the same problem happen when I tried to install an older version of Corel Painter. Are Macbook Pro users just NOT supposed to be able to use their laptops for the purposes they are best designed for?

  • What is the best way to backup my MacBook Pro?

I live in a nursing home and have very limited space.   I am also on a fixed income so it can't cost very much.   So, what would be the best and an inexpensive way to backup my MacBook Pro?

You will need an external HDD with a capacity that is at least the size of the internal MBP drive.  A larger one will not hurt.  Then employ Time Machine which is the backup application already on your MBP.
Peruse the Newegg website and Amazon for external HDDs that fit your budget.
    Ciao.

  • What is the best way to increase my macbook pro's memory, it is 4g now.

What is the best way to increase my Macbook's memory? it is a 4g now.

And what is the exact model of MBP that you have?
Normally, assuming your Mac supports more than 4 GBs, the best way is to buy the specific RAM required for your machine to replace the RAM that is now installed. But we can't tell you that without knowing what model you have.
Open System Profiler in the Utilities folder and report what you find displayed for the Model Identifier.

MacKeeper is malware that charges a fee. Do not install it under any circumstances.
