Steps after buying a used iPhone 6

I'm buying a used iPhone. What steps should I take immediately after I receive the iPhone, to make sure that everything is OK, that I got what I paid for, and that I'm not receiving a lemon?
For instance, it might be nice to check that it wasn't reported stolen / blacklisted. Also, I am buying a factory unlocked phone, so it'd be useful if there is an easy way to check to make sure I am receiving an unlocked iPhone. Also, if there is any hardware that is frequently broken / not working on used devices, it might be useful to have a checklist for checking that hardware.

**IMPORTANT** You should check the Activation Lock Status before buying the phone:
https://www.icloud.com/activationlock/
If you buy a phone that is activation locked, it will be useless.
There is no universal list of phones that have been reported stolen. Also, in the U.S., if the phone was on an account that was cancelled for non-payment, you may not be able to activate that phone again on the same carrier until the debt is resolved.

The iPhone has Activation Lock and will require you to have the previous owner's Apple ID and password or you'll need to get the previous owner to remove the device from his/her iCloud account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2702
If you can't reach the previous owner or he/she is unwilling to cooperate, then the device is unusable by you. Return the iPhone for a refund if you can.

Legality aside (I'm not a lawyer and have no opinion on the matter) in order to make a purchase of an iPhone 5 you would need to travel to a country where they are for sale and purchase it there. Be sure to get one that is officially unlocked or you would not be able to use it with your cell carrier. Be sure that your carrier supports use of the iPhone before you buy. Also note that the warranty of the iPhone is only valid in the country of purchase.
Appe does not ship outside of the countries where it sells the phones.

  • Best way to buy a used iPhone 3Gs?

I lost my iPhone on a New York City bus today and I doubt there's any chance I'll be getting it back   I belong to AT&T and unfortunately my contract isn't eligible for renewal and won't be for another year.  I don't want to pay full price for a new 3Gs or a 4G, so I am thinking about buying a used phone to last me for another year, until I can renew my contract and get a new phone. Does anyone have any tips or advice about where to buy a used iPhone and what to lookout for? I'm a little bit nervous about buying from Craigslist or Ebay, but it seems like these sites may be my best option.

Craigslist. There are always pretty cheap phones there and some people take care of their stuff really well

The Apple ID and Password that was Originally used to Activate the iDevice is required.
If you cannot get this information from the seller
Removing a device from a previous owner’s account
You need to return the Device for a refund, as you will not be able to re-activate it.

  • If I buy a used iPhone, will I be entitled to remaining warranty?

Hi, I am thinking about buying a used iPhone 5s. The seller states that the phone will be supplied with at least 4 months Apple warranty. Can someone please confirm that Apple warranties can be passed on when selling Apple devices.

if you are buying from ebay in UK ,it is a world class service in stolen, etc, iPhones
eBay is world-class in stolen iPhones everywhere, not just in the UK, and the leader in sellers making other bald-face lies about the status of an iPhone. In addition, many people report having a high amount of difficulty getting eBay to help obtaining a refund in such a case. I would never, never buy any iOS device from an eBay seller. But it's marginally safer than buying an iPhone from a CraigsList seller or some other ad service.

  • HT4623 How can I troubleshoot my mailbox after buying a used phone through E-bay I cannot access my Voicemail

After buying a used phone I cannot access my voicemail messages, how can I re-set or troubleshoot, it keep asking me for my mailbox number,  can I reset the mailbox message  on my phone ?

You need to contact your carrier to reset your voicemail. You should also wipe the phone if you haven't already: Settings/General/Reset - Erase all content and settings.

  • Buying a used iphone 3gs online - are all the unlocked ones jailbroken, too?

    Hey there :-)
My iphone was stolen recently, and as I wasn't banking on having to replace it until about a year later, the replacement will need to be a used one so I don't totally blow my budget I looked locally but there's nothing interesting, so my only choice is probably going online, specifically ebay.
Now, the issue is, I need one that's unlocked, because I won't be using it in the same country it's bought (and the odds of finding a phone locked to the specific network are slim to none). But I keep finding iphones that are marked 'unlocked and JAILBROKEN'. Trouble is, I'm not sure I want a jailbroken phone, because I've heard jailbreaking ends up causing all sorts of problems with the software, and I don't need that: I see absolutely zero benefit in sacrificing any of the reliability I've come to know and love just for the opportunity to download a bunch of potentially lower-quality apps, many of them games which I don't use anyway - not when there's so many interesting apps I can get without bending/breaking the rules (not judging those who do this, just explaining my own perspective, how it works for the kind of use I make of this).
But most of the phones listed as 'unlocked' also have 'jailbroken' in the description. So now I'm beginning to worry that these two go hand-in-hand - like maybe, jailbreaking is a first step or something for unlocking the iphone, so that by definitiion, an unlocked iphone is also a jailbroken one. Is that the case?
And if so, what should I pay attention to when buying so that I can minimize the chance of getting a dud? If not, can I ask one of these sellers to undo the jailbreaking somehow and just send the phone unlocked only - is that a possibility? I'm reasonably experienced buying on ebay (studying feedback, etc) but this is the first large purchase of this kind, so ANY advice you can think of for this will be very very welcome indeed

    Dave Sawyer -
yes, unfortunately a new iPhone is completely beyond my means right now. I tried to figure it out but the money just isn't there for that kind of purchase It doesn't help that iPhones are priced at a high premium where I am - it took me a few months to save up for the one that was stolen! and worse, older model iphones don't get discounted more than a couple dozen euros at most here, and even when you can find demonstration devices, you'll be lucky to get 5% off a device that is a complete mess.
Okay, enough wingeing I really want to thank you for the detailed post - I can honestly say you saved me a lot of grief because other advice I received was that I could buy a JB iphone and then get rid of the JB with a simple restore! Which sounds like it's definitely not the case.
What you said confirms the wisdom of my decision to stay away from JB iPhones. They honestly sound like they are better suited to people who just like to tinker with their device, and if the tinkering interferes with the phone's reliability, that's not a big issue to them because it's used more as a toy or educational aid than a fully fledged tool, as it is for me.
I have found a few listings for 'factory unlocked' iphones. What do you think of these? Are they legitimate? One of them seems to be from a larger business seller who sells only this type of thing, and the others are original owners (who bought them from the carrier or Apple) selling their own used phones.

  • When buying a "used" iphone, does the warranty transfer with it?

Say a friend buys the new iphone for 199 with his upgrade.
He can then sell it to me for whatever he chooses and I can then register this with ATT with no issues correct?
Will the warranty transfer from him to me?
With as many problems as these iphones have, and obvsiously they are using cheaper products to manufacture them, the warranty is what im really concerned about.
Has ATT offered any kind of insurance on the iPhone yet?

    PsychedelicWonders,
To my knowledge, AT&T does not offer insurance for the iPhone. You can however obtain insurance for the iPhone from other insurance companies, such as State Farm.
The warranty already attached to the iPhone travels with the iPhone, no matter who owns it currently.

  • Buying a used iphone

Hey everybody i am going to buy my friends Iphone off of him and was wondering do i have to port the iphone on my computer. Since he is taking his sim card with him can i just put mine in? And finally do i have to buy the extra service (i have been a user of att since the early 2000's) to be able to use the Iphone.
Thanks for all of your help.

You need to get a new SIM card from at&t for this used iPhone before activating the iPhone with at&t for your at&t account and phone number via iTunes on your computer.
And finally do i have to buy the extra service (i have been a user of att since the early 2000's) to be able to use the Iphone.
    In a word, yes.
It doesn't matter how long you have been an at&t subscriber.
The extra $20/mo unlimited data plan for the iPhone, which includes 200 SMS, is required when activating an iPhone with your account. This will replace any existing data plan and SMS plan you currently have for your account with at&t.
Visual voicemail is downloaded to the iPhone via the EDGE network only - included with the iPhone's unlimited data plan. The iPhone switches from an available wi-fi connection to EDGE (and vice-versa) automatically and seamlessly.
You want and will need the iPhone's unlimited data plan.

  • Buying a used iPhone 3GS

    Hi all,
I'd like to buy an iPhone but I can't afford a brand new one, so I decided to buy a used 3GS, and I wondered what should I take care about, what are the points that may be defective (misworking buttons...)
    Thank you for your answer

    1. Inspect for liquid damage, this tells you where the indicators are:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3302
    2. Verify that the IMEI number has not been blacklisted(some carriers will blacklist lost or stolen phones).
    3. Are all accessories are included? USB cable, USB charger, original box, stereo headset with mike, etc:
    In the box
    * iPhone 3GS
    * Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic
    * Dock Connector to USB Cable
    * USB Power Adapter
    * Documentation
    4. Is the phone carrier locked or officially unlocked? Will it work & activate on the carrier network you want to use? DO NOT PURCHASE A HACKED PHONE!
    5. Plug the SN in here:
    http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html
This will even tell you when the phone was made.
Also, plug the SN in here to see if any warranty remains:
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
    6. See what OS is currently on the phone. Most current version for a 3GS is iOS 4.3. Settings>General>About>Version.
&. Inspect for physical damage: Cracked screen, cracked case, bent pins in dock connector, headphone jack work, mute switch work, volume buttons work, speaker work, mic work, home button work, sleep/wake button work:
    8. As always, BUYER BEWARE: A defective or stolen phone can wipe out any cost savings you would otherwise enjoy.

  • If I buy a used iPhone 4 without a data plan will the GPS work?

I live in Canada and am a complete newbie when it comes to cell phones and data plans. I am not interested in having or paying for cellular telephone capability.
I've been using the 64 Gb iPod Touch 4 but detest its 0.7 Mb still camera and bemoan its lack of GPS.
Now that the iPhone 4S has been released, there are many folks selling their older iPhone 4s. I'd love to use one of these older iPhone units with their better camera and GPS capability, but don't want to pay for a data plan, nor am I willing to pay $850 for an unlocked iPhone 4S. I'm happy to continue using wireless internet and don't need a cell phone.
Being a newbie when it comes to data plans and cell phones, if I purchase a used iPhone 4 from someone:
    1. Does it need a SIM card (activated or not) to use the GPS on it? If yes, must a deactivated SIM card be provided by the seller or where can I obtain one?
    2. Does the iPhone 4 need to be on a cellular plan to use the GPS?
    3. I can use a deactivated iPhone 4 on WiFi only as I've been doing with the iPod Touch 4, correct?
    4. If I can use a deactivated, non-contract iPhone 4 on WiFi only, will the GPS work and allow me to use GPS-enabled apps? If yes, does it somehow still "tie"into available local cell networks to achieve a position without me paying for (or being registered for) cellular access?
    5. Can future iOS upgrades (say to iOS5) still be performed on a deactivated iPhone 4 without a cell plan?
    6. Do I need to purchase the iPhone 4 from a Canadian seller given my above questions? What other questions do I need to ask of the seller when looking for a used iPhone 4?
Thanks in advance for any help with my newbie questions!

Thanks for that, Paulfromwallasey. I live in a rural area without many cell towers and with WiFi only in my home. I do use offline maps (topographical and street maps) on my iPod Touch 4 outdoors (not needing a signal, WiFi or cellular). I also have a hand-held Garmin GPS receiver but would rather use the GPS in the iPhone (its positional accuracy, while likely being lower than that obtained from my Garmin, is likely sufficient for my needs).
I guess that one of the questions that I was asking is if I were to purchase a used iPhone 4 from someone, and the SIM card have been removed, would the device's GPS still work with GPS-enabled apps (albiet without the cellular-assist)?
Can any pay-as-you-go SIM card be purchased for and used in a deactivated iPhone4? Would this even be necessary for the GPS?
    Thanks again.

  • HT201441 what do you do if you buy an used iphone ofline and you try setting it up but you need there icloud but have no contact with them what do i dooo..?.

    what do i doo

If you bought a used iPhone and it is asking for the previous owners Apple ID and password, that iPhone is unusable.  That is the Activation Lock, an anti-theft protection system that cannot be bypassed, not even Apple can touch that.  You must get the Apple ID and password from the previous owner or get them to remove the iPhone from their iCloud devices or you will never be able to use it.

  • I buy one used iphone 4 and i can not activated

I have bought via internet (Greek website) a used iphone 4.
I can not activate the phone because it is locked with another ID ..
The seller does not communicate and seem reluctant to answer me
    what to do ???

It's activation locked. If you can't get your money back, turn it over to the police.

  • Buying a used iPhone 3G, is 2-year contract still required?

Can I get the AT&T plan without the 2-year commitment since the original owner took care of the subsidies?

    You're welcome.
A two year contract is not required because you MIGHT want to upgrade your phone - that has absolutely nothing to do with the two year contract requirement for the iPhone whatsoever.
The first generation iPhone was not subsidized by AT&T in the traditional way, but a two year contract was required. A two year contract is required with the iPhone 3G also regardless if an existing subscriber qualifies for upgrade or subsidized pricing with a new phone, and for new subscribers who purchased a used first generation iPhone or a used iPhone 3G.
Most first generation iPhone owners qualified for upgrade or subsidized pricing with the iPhone 3G a year or within a year of the two year contract. There was no penalty when doing so, and the new two year contract for the iPhone 3G replaced the existing contract that was not completed. This was because the first generation iPhone was not subsidized by AT&T in the traditional way.
If Apple releases the 3rd generation iPhone next summer, I won't qualify for upgrade pricing on a new phone at that time, including for the 3rd generation iPhone, but you would at that time if you activate a used iPhone 3G as a new subscriber since AT&T did not give you a subsidy for the iPhone 3G when becoming a subscriber.
That is why I threw that in there.
It is part of the exclusive contract between Apple and AT&T that a two year contract is required for the iPhone.
