Steps Lost in Adobe FrameMaker 12

I keep trying to insert steps in FrameMaker 12 (I am documenting features using a DITA XML file), but my efforts are useless. Every time I save the file, exit FrameMaker, and reopen the file in FrameMaker, my steps are lost. It just goes back to paragraph mode. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I don't mean to be critical, but I think that you may want to do some reading up on working in the FrameMaker structured interface. It's very different than working with unstructured content. First, you can't apply "formatting" to content .. if you're trying to apply "bold" formatting, then you're doing it wrong. It's all about elements, not styles. I'm guessing that you're using FrameMaker incorrectly, and that's the cause of the problems you're seeing. It's hard to know what you're doing, but if you take the time to do a bit of learning it'll be much less frustrating.

Check out this book (also by Bernard from the video .. these just came up first in a Google search). It's written for FM9 and is only the first 5 chapters, but it's got some useful information about the fundamentals of working in structured FrameMaker ..

Also, if you just installed a trial, you are likely not using the latest patch. It's important that you install the updates. Use the Check for Updates menu item to get the latest.

You say "Shut up and take my money". They say "Sorry, we're into stealth merchandizing. Guess again. If you can figure that we offer it, and figure out how to order it, we might sell it to you, or not."

Issues with printing PDF from Adobe FrameMaker 6.0p405

Hi All,
I use Adobe FrameMaker 6.0p405 and Adobe Distiller 6.0. The formatting gets all messed up when ever I generate a PDF. Some of the issues that I face are:
Some icons like "Note", "Warning", and so on do not appear consistently
Header and footer information does not appear consistently
Step numbers do not appear consistently
Headings do not appear consistently
I tried the following troubleshooting steps:
Uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe FrameMaker 6.0p405
Uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Acrobat 6.0.
The issue reappears even after performing the above steps. Any help in fixing this is greatly appreciated.

Why won't Adobe FrameMaker 11 generate a PDF?

I was working on this problem a few months ago, but my workload made me simply use the FM 11 and FM 7.2 on my old XP PC. I now REALLY need to find time to focus on the FM 11 and Adobe tech comm suite on my Win 7 Professional PC. I "forced" myself to work on this today.
Here are answers to your questions:
I was trying to "save book as" PDF and it starts as if generating PDF with Distiller, but tps file is zero bytes. NO error messages. No, I never had to have Adobe PDF printer as the FM default printer in the past. But I just tried it with Adobe PDF as default printer, and it didn't work. Used RGB mode. Job option = "Standard". Yes, I checked for FM updates and it says there are none and that 11.0.2.384 is the latest version.
I am most frustrated and have tried everything. I have worked with FrameMaker for 15 years, and I thought I understood it well. But this has me stumped.
About two months ago, I took the PC to the office (I normally work from home but go there about once a month for meetings at the Dallas office) and sat with my PC side-by-side with the other technical writer. Compared what happened, and we were both stumped. I need to go back and do that again. My inclination is to uninstall Adobe Tech Comm Suite 4 and selective install only FM 11 with Distiller. Then I can go back and selectively install RoboHelp 10 for HTML help.
I REALLY appreciate your willingness to help. I am not sure what to do next. THANK YOU very much for responding. Like I said, I think I need another session at the office to compare notes step-by-step; I think it has something to do with the PDF printer/converter, but not sure why it works on other writer's PC and not mine. I might have to make time and call Adobe to see whether they can remotely access my PC and try to assist. But that assumes they have some expert available who REALLY understands this software.

Automatic installation of Adobe Framemaker 12

Hello All,
With Adobe Framemaker XI, We could use Adobe Application Manager Enterprise Edition v3.1 to embed the serial number and pre-validate the sign-in option. An MSI was generated, and then an automatic installation could be performed, for enterprise deployments for example.
It seems Adobe Application manager v3.1 is not working with Adobe Framemaker 12.
Is there any way to create a customized installation package, or any command line to use?

Deployment Package can be created for FrameMaker 12 by using Creative Cloud Packager 1.6.
Please follow these steps to create package for FrameMaker 12.
1)     Select Create Package
2)     Enter package name and choose saved location
           Select 32 –bit or 64 bit as per the computer configuration
3)     Enter serial Key of FrameMaker 12 and click next.
4)     Choose language from the available language list and select FrameMaker 12 and click build.
It will create deployment package at the destination folder.
Once the package is created you will get the msi package in the build folder at the saved location.
Steps to follow to deploy silently on single machine:
Open CMD in Administrator mode.
Give the path till inside the build folder of the package. For Example if the build is saved on your Desktop the path in CMD should be as below:
C:\Users\[username]\Desktop\Packagefolder\packagename\Build>
Now type the following installation command: msiexec.exe /i packagename.msi /quiet
Launch Task Manager.
There will be three process of “msiexec.exe”
One will be under System
Other Two will be under [username].
Installation will be completed once both the process of msiexec.exe under the [username] are finished.
The installation process with take 5 to 10 minutes.
After the successful installation of main package we need to run the Post Exception Deployer Application.
In Command Prompt you have to go to the exact path where Adobe FrameMaker 12 package folder is placed and go inside Exceptions folder.
Now Run the Command as mentioned below to run the Exceptions Deployer Application.
ExceptionDeployer --workflow=install --mode=post
   9. Installation will be completed in next few minutes.

Prior to updating flash player, you must first uninstall all previous versions. Make sure you are downloading from the proper Adobe website = Adobe Flash Player Software

Repair permissions and restart your computer after the installations.

Unable to print to oversize pages using Adobe FrameMaker 9 \ 7.2 and Distiller 9.0

I am trying to print to PDF a publication that is full of oversize wiring diagrams from Adobe FrameMaker 9 and 7.2 with Distiller 9.0. The pages are all text and images ranging in size from standard A3 and A4 size sheets through to a foldout being 1470 mm W X 297 mm H. We have no problem printing A3, A4 and 630 mm W X 297 H. These are all Portrait images. When we set up our custom print size to accomodate the 1470 mm W X 297 mm H we get the pages without the content, and even some of the oversize pages are not the correct size on print.
The page sizes we are using are:
A4 (This is all good)
A3 (This is all good)
630 x 297 mm (This is all good)
840 x 297 mm (Problems from here on)
1050 x 297 mm
1260 x 297 mm
1470 x 297 mm
The procedures we are using to set up the printing are:
1. Print to PDF (Also tried save to PDF)
Under Print Setup make sure you select PDF Driver and select the Paper size as largest that is in your book. Example: If A4 and A3 pages, print to A3
2. Select Generate Acrobat Data and select

Note: Back in FM Print dialogue; make sure Print to File is turned OFF, before you click Print

Create a specific FM file having a custom page size appropriate to each unique "content set".
Create a FM Book file.
Add the FM files.
Work up configuration (Hypertext, Cross-References, autonumbering, variables, etc.) as desired.
In Print Setup -
Set page size to the page size of the largest FM file in the Book.
(you may have to go into the Adobe Printer and add one or more custom page sizes so the page size needed is available)
Set orientation to landscape if any FM files are such.
Idea is, if needed, FM files for the content in the various page size/orientation that is appropriate to the content.
If that means 1FM file of custom size and appropriate orientation then do it.
Book files can deal with it.
Back to Page Setup.
Do the Page Size & Orientation.
Access 'Propertires' - is the Distiller job option selected the one you want/need?
Create one if need be so that it is available.
Go into the Print Book dialog.
Configure as needed (remember Acrobat data links, etc. &, oh yes, back in FM be happy with the configurations under tabs for PDF Setup).
Print the Book.
Use Distiller to take to output *.ps to *.pdf (may want the use a "watched folder")
Output PDF can/will reflect the the different page sizes and page orientations.
n.b., FM-Acobat-Distiller releases have a "sync band".
It is discussed somewhere in some kb articles.
I'm not sure if FM7.2 functions quite right with Distiller 9.
FM 8 will (&, of course FM 9)
I've had no problems with FM7.2 or FM8 and Distiller 8.

Adobe FrameMaker 12.0.3 Update Failed

FM 12 has been crashing regularly, and I am hopeful that the 12.0.3 update will help, but I'm getting the message "Update Failed" when I run the update.
The "Error Log" simply says:
Adobe FrameMaker 12.0.3 Update
Installation failed. Error Code: U44M1P7
I wonder if anyone else is getting this error, and is there a way around it?

Update - I was able to get it to work by manually opening then closing Charactermap.exe.

Do you have the purchased serial number? What computer operating system?
If you purchased from Adobe direct, you can get download installation files from "My Orders" at the Adobe web site under your Adobe ID and Password (http://www.adobe.com).

Could you provide some more details on what what you're doing? Are you're seeing any error messages?
Some details about your computer will also help.
1. Go to the following webpage: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?loc=en_us&product=framemaker. If you're signed in with your Adobe ID, log in when prompted.
2. Choose the < Language | Platform> and then click Download. A new window open and the downlaod should start.
You could try with a different browser, and also check if popup blocker is not letting the window open. You migth have to manually allow the popup window to open.
