Steps to back up the project

I am archiving my entire projects on separate drives. In addition I would like to back up the project without the media and rendered files in case my external drive goes bad so I could use the original tapes to restore.
What are the steps involved?

To back up the project without the media simply copy the project file.
To back up your captures copy the file with the project name from your scratch folder.
Don't forget any graphics/stills.
You could also copy you auto-saves of your project if you wanted to be extra safe.
I don't backup the render files as they can always be re-created, and have unintelligible names.

I am using An MP4 that I turned into an Mp3 as a sample on a song. When I try to use the middle part of the file it just changes to another part of the track. When I save the project and come back to it the sample is completely different than when I saved it. HELP!

I believe you have to do Get Info on the file through the Finder (not thru iTunes...search for the track in the music folder on your hard drive) and you should see a toggle arrow for Ownership and Permissions. See if it says Read and Write.

Is there a way I can automatically reinsert my original HD clips back into the project after optimizing them?

Hi, I'm working on an important video project, which I filmed with my Canon 550D in HD. Initially, I wanted to maintain the HD quality but (as I am using a Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) it proved to be impossible to edit. I then subsequently optimised the footage to Large 960x540 and easily continued my work. And so now I am quite close to the hand-in date and while the video is fine as is, I was wondering if there was a way to reinsert the original HD footage now that I've finished editing (I still have them in the 'iMovie Original Movies' folder) so it automatically 'swaps' itself with the edited footage?

This error sounds to me like you have/had BootCamp Windows installed and then removed, posible ?
If so (and even if not so), try restating your MBA while holding down the alt/option-key until you get to the Boot Selection Screen.
Choose to boot OSX.
Once in OSX go to System Preferences then Startup Volume and set your OSX to be the default.

Trying to make a disc.img from an iMovie project get the mssage that some of the audio clips are not available. The clips still show as green bars in the project but do not play.

I successfully made a disc.img and then burned a DVD of the project but found an error in a title. Went back to the project, corrected the error, and tried to create a new disc.img but got the message that some of the audio tracks were unavailable. They still show as green bars in the project but do not play. Tried deleting and reinstalling them with no success. They do play in iTunes and in the iMovie editing pane

The order of topics in the Project Manager is not reflected when creating a PDF for review.

Can't seem to find an answer to this in the forums...
Using RH10.
In the Project Manager pod is a default 'Project Files' folder.
Within that I have a 'Topics' folder in which my topic files reside.
Under the View menu, I have selected 'By Topic Title'. I understand that this displays the topics by their title as opposed to their file name. I understand that this is a display toggle only, and has no relation to the order of the topics - the alternative toggle is 'By File Name'.
Notice in the image below, my topics are displayed by topic title, but aren't in alphabetical order. ...yet.
There's a button at the top of this window for changing the sort order to 'Sort by Name', which has the result below.
Ok, so now the topics are displayed by topic title, and in alphabetical order.
Question 1: If that button toggles the view to display topics in 'alphabetical order', what on earth is the other order called? It's certainly not in order of file name, as I've checked a bunch of the topic filenames, and can't see any pattern/order to the this structure.
Question 2: When I go to create a PDF for review (via Review > Create PDF for Review), the window that appears displays all the topics available to me to select for review. However, they're displayed in this other 'odd' sort order instead of 'alphabetical' order. The Help menu says that this window reflects the order of topics as it finds them in the Project Manager. However, what seems to be actually happening is it's displaying the topics based on the view you have selected under the View menu (i.e. either 'View by Topic Title' or 'View by File Name'), and regardless of which view toggle you have selected, the order of the topics is only ever this 'odd' sort order. In other words, in the 'Create PDF for Review' window, it appears I can never see the topic list in alphabetical order. Furthermore, it appears that the only way I can resolve this is to go back into the Project Manager, switch to 'odd' sort order, and manually drag all the topics into alphabetical order. ...I have hundreds of topics.
Is there some way I can quickly change this 'odd' sort order to 'alphabetical'? There must be some underlying file with this order of topics in it (hopefully).

I don't have an immediate answer for Question 2, but for Question 1, the topic order is "User Defined" as you are able to click and drag topics to create any arrangement that suits you. This was something added as a result of user feedback. Enough users asked Adobe to allow them to arrange topics this way that they made it a reality. The logic escapes me as I'm a user that normally expects software to list things in either ascending or descending alphabetical order.
Perhaps Peter will pop in with a nice explanation of the PDF for Review sorting and Adobe's logic behind it.

I did the followings steps:
1: In side the project - File -> Add Existing Item -> Web Page ( imported test.html page from my local folder)
2: Let it convert some of the tags for me ( so now it becomes - �test.jsp� )
3: Set it to initial view.
4. A default portlet page � newPortletPage.jsp is still there with no initial view.
Now after doing this, No Visual Designer and Properties window available to for that �test.jsp� page. Though it allowed me to �build� the project successfully.
When I build and run the portlet application, got the error message �Error occurred in portlet!� on Pluto Portal. Please advice.

You do not open fcpproject files. You don't double click or anything else. The files have to be in the correct folder structure in the Final Cut Projects folder and the application opens them automatically. Can you post screen shots of the Final Cut Projects folder and its location.

If you are using 10.0.3 or above Apple added a backups folder that for a little extra protection in cases like this. If you quite FCPX go to your Final Cut Pro Projects folder. Find the folder that has the project in question. If it has a backups folder there should be a file with a date stamp and .fcpproject extention, that is your back-up. Just move the back-up from that folder one folder up to the place where you deleted CurrentVersion.fcpproject from. When I have had to do this I haven't renamed the backup but some people to recomend that you rename it to CurrentVersion.fcpproject and it seems to work both ways. Ofcourse it wont work if there is already a CurrenVersion file there you will need to delete that one first.
If you don't have the backups folder or there is nothing in it I am not sure if there is anything that can be done.

How to split a movie in the project window

I spent a lot of time dragging clips up into the project window, inserting lots of title frames, and editing clips. When exporting to iDVD discovered that the projet is 2x too big. How do I split the movie into two halves in the project window without having to re-do the whole project?

Exit your project so your are back at the Project Library List. You should see your project as a filmstrip in the list. Right-click or control click on your project name and select Duplicate. You will now have 2 copies of your project. Duplicate it again to be safe.
Then, delete the first half of one of the duplicates, and delete the second half of the other duplicate.

How do I move a rejected clip back into a project?

I've been searching via Google and in this forum for WAY too long and can't find an answer to this problem.
I've inadvertently marked a whole section of movie as "rejected" when I should have only marked the last little bit of it. For the life of me I can't figure out how to "undo" (because I've done other things since and the official Undo option is unavailable) the rejection. Dragging from the rejected files area back to the project doesn't seem to work. I've tried iMovie help but it just hangs (with the spinning railroad tracks going on and on and on), so am hoping someone here can help me out. I SO wish I could find an up-to-date pdf user manual somewhere!

If you are absolutely positively sure that the password you are typing in is your Apple ID password, I would try once more to enter the password. Be real careful as you type and make sure that Autocorrect is not changing what you are typing.
If no luck try to proceed without entering the password. If you can get the iPad functional go into
Settings > ITunes and App Store and log in there.
If you can log into to your Apple ID there you will also need to go to
Settings > Messages > Send and Receive and enter or check the email at which you want to receive messages,
Also
Settings > FaceTime > check or enter the email address you want to be reached by FaceTime.

When you open the project, it should ask you where the first file is located. After you tell it where it is, it should be able to find the rest of them if they are located near the first one. Then save the file. If you move the files again, you will have to relink them again.

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

If I pull pics out of iPhoto, and later want to drag an archived projet bac into iMovie and the pics are no longer in iPhoto, will I be able to keep working in the project in iMovie?

Very likely not, as the iPhoto's can be used for something else.
More like it took a copy, or it's referencing that spot on the drive in the editable files and most likely made a copy to create a new permanent export file.
Sample one picture and a iMovie file and see what happens.

I moved the project files and now I can't get them back into iMovie 11

I was working on a project but I ran out of disk space before I could finish it. Now, for this very purpose, I have an external hard drive with plenty of space on it. So I tried moving the folder with all my project files onto the external hd, and now iMovie can't find my project anymore. With iMovie '06 it was as simple as hitting "save as" and saving the project to the external hd, but I guess that's not complicated enough for the new version. Now I can't get into my project. I even try clicking on the actual project file, and it goes to iMovie as if the project was about to open, but nothing happens. So I fear I wasted a lot of time working on that project only to have to start all over because I ran out of disk space.
Someone please tell me there's a way to get the project files open again. Thanks

that is a simple one and should be a routine after purchasing a new drive (in a Mac-only environment!):
• on your Mac, Apps/Utilities you'll find Disk 'Utility'
• on the left lane, you'll notice your connected hard drive(s)
• select it, click on the 'erase' tab
• NOTE: FORMATTING A DRIVE MEANS ERASING ALL CONTENT ON THAT DRIVE!
