Steps to Copy Existing Hard Drive

Hi. I just bought 2 Maxtor 500GB internal SATA hard drives. I have a Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3GHz purchased April 2006. It has an existing 250 GB hard drive. I also have a Seagate Firewire 250GB External HD. Would anyone be willing to map out the step by step process of installing the 2 new 500GB HD without losing any data? No need for Serial RAID or any of that. Install one, copy to that and then install the other? I pretty much use the Mac for Business- MS Offfice, Internet Banking and email, large Music Files and future plans for Logic Music files. I know how to physically install the units. But then what....? Your help-advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hello! You have some good advice here and I would add that along with SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner apps to clone with you can also use Kappy's instructions below. Always boot from the clone to make sure it boots ok. The process involves copying millions of files so there's always a possibility that everything isn't perfect so boot with the clone to make sure it's bootable. Better sooner than later as you wouldn't want to wait until a crash to find out if it's bootable. Also I recommend multiple clones with alternating dates. If you clone a system that becomes unstable 10 minutes after you've finished cloning then your current system as well as the clone may be corrupt. I note this because it happened to me. Tom
Kappy's Steps to Produce a bootable clone
Prep external FW drive:
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.

  • Partitioning an existing HARD DRIVE on a Power PC G5

I have a Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5 with 4 GB DDR SDRAM running 10.5.6.
    The Hard Drive is 250GBs.
I want to create a 110GB partition on it without erasing the data on the HARD DRIVE.
I'm only using 47GBs of the Hard Drive now.
Everytime I try using DISC UTILITY, it first tells me it can't it, that I have to use some type of
special journaling, but their is only one choice in the drop down for that field. I then try again
after I get the error message, and it appears to begin making the partition.
But then it hangs, forever. 24 hours or more and never stops.
Someone told me to try and boot up using a MAC OSX 10.5 boot up disc in safe mode, do
a HARD DRIVE permission repair and then try Disc Utility from there to make the partition.
But when I boot up in Safe Mode with the MAC OSX 10.5 Installation Disc 1, it says that 10.5 can't
    be installed on the system.
I'm confused. Can I create a partition on an existing Hard Drive without erasing the existing data on a PowerPC, or is that functionality limited to the newer Intel machines?
    Any input would be appreciated.

It sounds like there's something wrong with the file system on your disk.
First, *back up* your drive to an external disk. Use the Restore tab in Disk Utility, CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper!, or the like to make a "bootable clone" on a FireWire external drive.
Boot from the clone, then use Disk Utility on it to do a +Repair Disk+ (not permissions) on your internal HD. If that finds errors it can't fix, keep running it until it fixes all of them or can't fix any more.
In that case, you might be able to fix it with a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app, like DiskWarrior. It's about $100 and it (and other similar apps) are available via Google, VersionTracker.com, MacUpdate.com, etc.
Instead of the clone, you can boot from your Leopard Install disc, and select your language when prompted. Then on the next screen, select Utilities from the Menubar, then +Disk Utility.+ Use that copy of DU to do the +Repair Disk.+
If you can't fix it, the drive is suspect. If it's backed-up, you can try erasing it. Select the Erase tab, then +Security Options,+ then +Zero Out Disk.+ If that fails, the disk is dying. If it succeeds, it may be ok.
Then you should be able to make the partition without difficulty.
I'm confused. Can I create a partition on an existing Hard Drive without erasing the existing data on a PowerPC, or is that functionality limited to the newer Intel machines?
Yes, you should be able to partition it, as long as there's enough contiguous space, and the file system is ok.

  • Time Machine can't copy my hard drive

Time Machine can't copy my hard drive, it says that it can't complete the safety copy because an error occured when files were copied to the safety copy. Does anyone recognise this problem? All I could find in System notifications about Time Machine is this: "localhost kernel[0]: Security policy loaded: Safety net for Time Machine (TMSafetyNet)"

that's the problem -- my hard drive ("startup disk) is not listed, so I can't select it.
The reason is that the startup volume is not a valid selection for its own Time Machine backup.
The only drive listed is the Time Machine external drive.  Obviously, I don't want to back up the time machine drive.
By default, a Time Machine backup volume is excluded from being backed up.
The appearance you describe is correct, otherwise I'm completely misunderstanding your problem.

  • Using Disc Utility to copy my hard drive to a brand new external drive and am having the error "Unable to create...(Cannot allocate memory)".

I'm not very tech savvy but am trying my best to use Disc Utility to copy my hard drive to a brand new external drive and am having the error "Unable to create...(Cannot allocate memory)".
Last night no problems, woke this morning and it was freezing so I forced a restart and got the grey screen with the folder and question mark. Ran off to best buy to get an external drive... Please help! Thank you!

I have done both. When I hold down the "C" key it pauses for a few seconds while the cd spins and then the flashing folder icon appears.
Could be you have the wrong cd/dvd.  The mac will only boot a supported cd/dvd for your machine. The flashing question mark indicdates your machine could not find a valid os.
When I hold down the "option" key for the startup manager the cursor comes up and moves but the actually manager doesn't come up no matter how long I leave the laptop on.
Not sure.  Could be your machine does not support the startup manager. You would think the machine would ignore the key.
Where did you get the dvd?  What is the number on the DVD?
What machine do you have anyway?

The reason that threadjacking is frowned on (as mentioned in the terms use which you can read by clicking the link to the right on this page) is for the most part a practical one:
By starting your own thread your problem can get individual attention, focussed on your particular set of circumstances.
By joining somebody else's thread it becomes tricky to answer more than one question at the same time, and can lead to confusion for both parties.
So if you don't mind the minor inconvenience, please start your own thread (in the correct forum) so we can get to grips with your particular problem!

    Many thanks lllaass,
The Touch Copy third party software for PC's is the way to go it seems and although the demo is free, if you have over 100 songs then it costs £15 to buy the software which seems not a lot to pay for peace of mind. and restoring your iTunes library back to how it was.

  • Why is Copying a Hard Drive to another so difficult?

All I want to do is COPY one Hard Drive onto an External.
I have one MBP hooked up to another via Target Disk mode, the 1st MBP hooked up to another external HDD, and all I want to do it is copy the Target one to the HDD.
Copy, Paste, boom. But it always, always wants to hang. Just copy. That's all I want to do, why can't we just copy everything over like that? Do I have to use a proper application to formally copy a whole system and everything on it safely so that everything is there and nothing is missing?
What application would you recommend to do that?
    Thank you!

  • Cannot Copy A120 Hard Drive (Locked)

    Hi,
I have a Satellite Pro A120, which has a small hard drive 55GB, and the HDD Password Utility is used and I have to put the password in every time I start the laptop.
I have purchased a 250 Gig Sata Drive to replace it because it is too small really.
Right first I took the original drive out and attached it to my desktop computer and it wasn't even recognized, then I remembered the lock,
Ok I then left the drive in my laptop booted up and attached my new drive Partitioned and formatted it and proceeded to use Norton Ghost to copy my hard drive, now when I swap the drives in my laptop everything is great I unlock the drive with my usual password and proceed through the first XP Pro black windows screen however when it gets to the Blue Windows screen it just hangs, I have restarted and tried a few times but to no avail.
What I did notice is I went into the bios with the new drive installed and the HDD password said not registered, but my original drive says registered.
Could somebody please help me, I would be so grateful...
    Thanks In Advance

    Open the Finder.
From the Finder menu bar top of your screen click View > Show Status Bar
You should now see the the free space available at the bottom of any Finder window and that should change after you empty the Trash.

What you can do is to extract the hard drive from your old computer, put it in an enclosure and connect it to your newer computer, so you can restore your data.
It's not too difficult to do it yourself, but if you think you will do something wrong, take it to a store where you can get your data restored

  • Problems setting up testing server CS5 with existing PhP site copied to hard drive

A couple of years ago I dabbled in CS3 & PhP, but haven't touched it since 2009.  I still have WAMP loaded on my machines.  I'm now in a work situation where I was asked to see if I could make some simple copy updates to sites written in PhP.  I copied the entire sites over to my hard drive, and placed them in the WAMP www root folder, and followed instructions to setting up the site in CS5 (which is pretty close to the CS3 setup).  I made sure WAMP was running, and I'm still unable to connect. I am using "localhost" as part of the URL for the web server designation. I continue to get an "internal server error" message on these pages.  I am able to, from my browser, type in "http:localhost" and it appears that WAMP is running properly. And I do remember to start WAMP before I start a DW session.
So, I kept experimenting.  If I define a new PhP site and create a test document with simple PhP code, the connection to the testing server works and renders the code.  It's just the existing PhP site I've copied over generates the Internal server message.
Is there something basic I'm not understanding about viewing and manipulating a PhP site created by someone else using DW CS5?

The first question: on what platform? Windows - Mac?
I only succeeded in setting up a testing server on my Mac
with PHP and MySQL after reading a book of David Powers. On Leopard
I belief there still are problems connecting PHP to MySQL.

  • Itunes Library will not copy to hard drive

I can not Back up my iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive. The library is 300gb. It starts to copy very well and gets to 27.79 Gb and stops with an error message saying "Itunes already exists in this location." Which it does because that is the name of the file that I am moving and the computer itself has created a file called that to move the data into.
    Any ideas?

P.S. An addition to the last post. Yes, my kids were in tears before it was finally loaded. If the cleaning does not work, call the tech support in the back of the Star Wars info booklet. There happened to be a smudge of glue of something from the factory on ours, that once removed, the Cd was fine. But we did not notice it until everything was about to be thrown out the window out of frustration.
