Steps to follow when trading in older iMac

The time has come to switch to a newer model iMac, and I'd like to know what steps I should follow when trading in the old one - I want to use the credit given to buy the new one. This is what I'm planning to do, please let me know if I'm leaving anything out:
Buy time capsule, back up old computer
Disable it, follow instructions from support
Bring it to genius bar
But new computer
Use time machine to install content to new computer
Is it that easy?
Thanks!

Apple does not offer trade-ins toward new Macs but you may be able to recycle and receive a gift card > Apple Recycling Program
Better to not let go of the old iMac so you can transfer data to the new one first > OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mountain Lion and earlier
If you do not want to recycle >  What to do before selling or giving away your Mac

  • Steps to follow when creating new costcenter

    Hi,
We need to create a new company code with different currency other than the existing company code.
Do you have a check list to consider when creating a new company with same chart of account as per the existing company code and different currencies?
Please mention the critical areas should consider as well as the steps to follow.
    Thank you!!
    Regards
    Kesharika

    Hi,
Further to your querry, while creating new company code the following are to be the check list for the same:
Country, Currency Language are common and other parameters are tipical prior to go for new company code.
    1. Chart of Account
    2. Country Chart of Account
    3. Credit Control Area
    4. Fiscal Year Varient
    5. Field Status Varient
    6. Posting Period Varient
    7. Max. Exchange Rate Deviation
    8. Controlling Area Same as Company Code Yes / No ?
    9. Cost of Sale Account Status Activated / Not?
    10. FM Area
Further to the above, the mapping must be as per the SAP Relevance, such as:
    1. Operational Chart of Accounts must be same for all the company codes, if you are looking for consolidation.
    2. Fiscal Year Varient Must be same, if you are going to use the same operating concern for all the company codes.
    3. While assigning the Company code to Controlling area, Cross-company-code cost accounting required or not to be found.
    4. Assignment to plants and other organization units to be as per the requirement, how ever.
I ment for Steps are nothing but scope, prior to creation.
The creation of Company connected to Company code, I am unable to understand.
The heading is about creating new costcenter, but the body of the issue is differ.
I am updated about Company Code Creation and scope details, prior to do the same.
    Regards

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.

Are you wanting to import iCal to the MacBook Air. Since iCloud doesn't work with 10.6 OSX you probably don't have any data in iCloud yet?

I have an older imac with OSX 10.4.11. Will it transfer images  from newer digital cameras on to my computer via my iphoto program when the camera box states that the required mac OS is 10.5 or above or is that only if you wish to load the camera manufacturers own image processing program?

Which camera are you speaking about?
Why are you on such an old version on OS X?
With the information provided, I am inclined to say, no.

Be careful about mixing Time Machine backups and other data on the TC's disk.  That will cause conflicts, sooner or later.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.

  • I have an older iMAC that once burned CD's with no issues. Now I get an error message saying "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device is not accessible, probably because it was removed". I have never had it touched so the device was not removed.Help

I have an olde iMac that once I have an older iMAC that once burned CD's with no issues. Now I get an error message saying "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device is not accessible, probably because it was removed". I have never had it touched so the device was not removed. Please advise as to what could be the problem. How to fix. Thanks

Try resetting the SMC and PRAM first, if that doesn't help try a cleaning disc.....and then buy an inexpensive external burner. Slimline super drive failures are all too common.
    To reset the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

Please detail ALL you have done so far in the way of troubleshooting?  Need this info to avoid the been there done that scenarios.
How large is your HD and how much space do you have left?

All info about your Mac is listed in Apple>About this Mac>More Info
    ================
If you have not already done so....
Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:
Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD (or the system DVD that originally came w/your comp) while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.
If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

  • Update/upgrade older iMac

I'm a computer novice. My older iMac is no longer able properly to use many current websites and I get messages saying update to safari of firefox; but to get current versions of safari or firefox I need something beyond Mac OS X v 10.1.5, my current configuration. I've searched the Mac website, but it presuppose a starting point of at least version 2.0. How do I get where I can begin to go farther? Thanks in advance for any help!

    Welcome To  Discussions schuler!
Here is a recap, of some of the info, in the previously posted replies, and also additional info.
Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
Once an OS has been installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.10 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Jaguar, Panther, and Tiger 10.4.x, are no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Leopard 10.5.x, will be the most up to date OS, when it is released, on 10/26/07.
But, if you know what to look for, the Jaguar Full Retail CDs, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Jaguar and Panther are only on CDs, not DVDs.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

Before upgrading to any OS X version, check to see if your Mac needs a Firmware Update.
If one is required, you must start the computer from a Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 System Folder on the computer's hard disk, not from a CD, in order to install it.
Also check to see if your Mac model, is listed in this KB Article OS X Must Be Installed On First -8GB Partition.
Once Jaguar 10.2.x is installed, you can use the 10.2.8 Combo Update,
or if Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version of either OS.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.10 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
    Jaguar System Requirements
-Power Mac G3 or G4, iMac, eMac, PowerBook G3 or G4, or iBook computer
    -128MB of physical RAM
-Supports all video cards shipped by Apple on Mac OS X-compatible systems. Quartz Extreme functionality is supported by the following video cards: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX, GeForce3, GeForce4 MX, or GeForce4 Ti; Any AGP-based ATI RADEON card. A minimum of 16MB VRAM is required.
-QuickTime Pro functionality requires a QuickTime 6 Pro key. The QuickTime 5 Pro key will not work after this software is installed.
-DVD Player requires a DVD-ROM equipped Macintosh with built-in FireWire.
Review these Apple documents for Panther System Requirements
    Additional Panther System Requirements.
Additionally, Tiger 10.4.x ships on a DVD, so if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you will have to use an alternative method of installation.

and here Installing Tiger Using Firewire Target Disk Mode.
The Tiger Media Exchange Program, referred to in that article, is no longer available.

  • Older imac wont turn on

I have an older iMac - not certain as to the age or operationg system. I haven't used it in quite a while. I tried to use this older unit today and tried to turn it ON. it won't respond to pushing the ON button - its plugged into a surge strip - other electrical items plugged into this same strip work. ANy ideas out there how to get this unit back ON?
    John

    Welcome, John!
It's going to be hard to troubleshoot when knowing so little. Please refer to this site:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/index-apple-specs-applespec.html
and use the links on that page to see what models it most looks like. The same site also has this feature:
    http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
Note the instructions about entering only part of the serial number. If you follow the instructions, the partiol serial infomation should point to the exact model.
If it's an iMac, there are two forums here; one covers iMac from their introduction in 1998 through 2005, and the other covers 2006 through the present. Once you tell us the version we can get you moved, as the forum you are in now is for pre-1998 Mac hardware and gets little traffic.

  • Jetpack LTE and older imac w/airport connection issue

    Hello,
I get an error message when trying to login to jetpack lte with an older imac G4 OSX 10.4.11 via the airpot card. Can I disable WEB security on this unit to bypass the WEP security password issue? I can login onto this unit with my Macbook Pro no problem.
This is my mom's computer and I am trying to help her out. It is her only means of internet where she lives.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Marten

    Marten,
If you disable WEP from the MiFi you will disable security for everyone and leave your device open and vulnerable to moochers.  I do not suggest opening your connection up to the world as anyone who connects without your consent will hold you liable for thier data usage.
Instead, a better technique would be to change the password type from WEP to WPA or preferrably WPA2.  The newer security types will be more secure than WEP anyways and should always be used whenever possible.
Regardless, the steps to change your password to disabled or another type are all the same.  Test them out and choose which ever option will work the best for you.  See the MiFi 890L User Guide for more details:
    http://cache.vzw.com/multimedia/mim/vzw_890_jetpack/eufi_890_manual.pdf
To change the MiFi 890L Security Type:
    1. Connect a computer to the MiFi
    2. Navigate to 192.168.1.1 or http://vz.hotspot
    3. Sign into the MiFi with the admin password printed on the back of the device
    4. Navigate to WiFi Settings > Security
    5. Change the Security Type
    6. Confirm and record your wirelss password in the Password field (this will change from type to type)
    7. Click Apply

  • Transfer files etc. from PowerbookPC G4 to older iMac G3 help?

    Hi,
I'm wanting to transfer files from my PowerbookPC G4 512 MB DDR SDRAM to my older IMACDV+450/62/20GB/DVD/RAGE128PRO4XL/512k/56VGA (as written on the bottom of the iMac. How do I do this? I have the right cord I need but now what. Can someone tell me the steps required to do this?
Also will I lose all my files off my Powerbook in doing this? I'm backing up everything on the desktop (except the HD stuff) on DVD disks in case. Should I be backing up other stuff. My fear is that my Powerbook will have lost stuff after I transfer things over.
Will this transfer update my older iMac (ie. will I get the itunes, Safari OSX 10.4.8, Toast 7.1? Does everything transfer over or just the basic data files?
I'm aware I need more memory on my iMac before doing this.
    Thanks,
    S.

    Hi, Spiralgirl -
When you have booted with the two machines in Firewire Target Disk Mode, the hard drive of the one started with the "T" held down will appear as an icon on the desktop of the other machine - it will appear to that machine as if it were an extenal firewire hard drive.
Locate a file or folder on the drive you want to copy files from; drag the icon of that folder or file to the icon of the other hard drive; when that hard drive icon highlights (darkens), release the icon you dragged - Finder will copy the item (folder or file) to the other hard drive.
As Niel said, this will work for data files, and folders of them. It will not work as a backup means for OSX (although it will for OS 9 or Classic). To back up OSX itself, meaning the complete Operating System, you would need to use a cloning utility. Note, though, that even a cloned OSX would not be usable as an Operating System on the older machine, since it would not have been customized for the different hardware.

  • What are the different steps to follow in order to develop an application and deploy it into a PAC

    Hi,
I developped a program on my computer but in order to deploy it in a PAC , I don't know what are the different steps to follow?
What are the difference between a stand alone application and communication with server mode.
Can the file which will be downloaded into the PAC be in a form othre than (.exe).
what does the deployment licence consist of??? is it a software?
if the file is .exe then how to maintain it?
    Thank you for all,
    Regards

    Hi!
Since I'm familiar with FieldPoint PACs, I'll refer to that (but maybe it is similar for cRIO...).
An embedded application (standalone), runs entirely and independently on the PAC, while if you're not doing this, you'll have your computer, with LabView, which is controlling the PAC.  In this mode, application is dowloaded in PAC's RAM, so when you reboot controller, application will be lost.  If you build an embedded application, you can provide for application to boot authomatically at boot, each time the PAC reboots.  These are some basic stuffs on embedded applications with LV.
To deploy an application to a PAC, you need LabVIEW + Real-Time module. Without it, you can't build an embedded application on PACs.
usually, the file dowloaded is an .exe, and some libraries.  What would you like to have, exactly? For example, I think you can buy a simple .exe, which is universal, which loads VIs dinamically, so you can download directly VIs, but I've never tried this way....
Deployment license, I think, refer to PCs, id est, when you use a PC or PXI as embedded target, in PACs, you have it bundled (it seems to me) whit the PAC you buy, so you don't have to buy an extra license for every PAC you ship with your application.  Otherwise, if you develop a Real-Time application for a PC, you will ship PC + OS licensed + Real-Time extension licensed, but this is not your case, since you'll use PACs.
The maintain problem... I've already faced with! Simply, for my needs it was enough to make an application which loads configuration files, depending on different task the controller has to do. If you have to dowload a completely new version of VI.... it's better to deploy new application from LV.  But maybe you can bypass this problem with dinamic VIs loading...
Let me know if this help.... Have a nice day!

  • I need to reinstall the system software on my older iMac. I have lost the system disks, though... so now what? It had 10.4.

I need to reinstall the system software on my older iMac. I have lost the system disks, though... so now what? It had 10.4. We moved, and I have looked everywhere. Am I doomed to find a way to buy it? Can taking it into the Apple Store fix it? Will it be expensive THERE? I've already saved all of the files I want off of it.... I just need it to work now.

You've lost me on why you need to reinstall Tiger, when you already have all the files you wanted (which means Tiger worked perfectly fine). If you want to upgrade to Leopard, that's a different issue: your Mac needs to meet the minimum system requirements for that, which you can easily determine.
If you just want to get a replacement set of Tiger install discs, you can try calling AppleCare and see if they're able to send you a replacement set, and if not, you'll have to buy a new set yourself. You can get them on eBay, Craigslist, and HardCore Mac (http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/), although they sell it for ridiculous prices.
