Steps to take after interrupting Migration Assistant?

Earlier today I was 1/4 through migrating some files with Migration Assistant between two intel-based imacs via Wi-fi when a thunderstorm passed by and I felt compelled to shut the computers down. I quit Migration Assistant on the receiving computer first, sending computer second, and then shut both down. I have a few questions about this:
1) What complications might this have caused?
2) Is it possible to tell what files were transferred?
3) If I used Migration Assistant to transfer the same categories, would the files that have already been transferred be overwritten?

Possibly no consequences depending upon what you were transferring at the time. If system files then the computer may not boot.
You cannot tell what hasn't or has been transferred.
Starting anew and allowing for completion shouldn't present any problem.

  • Problem with Lion upgrade after running Migration Assistant

I have a MacBook Pro that I purchased earlier this year.  I bought a new MacBook Air yesterday.
I used Migration Assistant to migrate some of my data/settings from my old MacBook Pro to the new MacBook Air.  After the migration, all of my original data was still available on the MacBook Pro (good as I wanted to keep a copy on the MacBook Pro and not all data was migrated).  The new MacBook Air received all the right data and is working well.
I then purchased a Lion upgrade for my MacBook Pro and started the installation process.  The installation process seemed to be going fine, but the MacBook Pro eventually hung.  I let it "run" overnight hoping that it would finish the process, but the machine was still hanging a day later.  I forced the MacBook Pro to shut down using the power button.  Now, when I restart the MacBook Pro, I get the "Mac OS X Utilities" screen asking if I want to Restore from Time Machine Backup, Reinstall Mac OS X, Get Help Online, or Disk Utility.  Does this mean my data is not longer available on the MacBook Pro?  Also, I do/did have the MacBook Pro connected to a Time Machine and it had up-to-date backups at the time I ran Migration Assistant.  However, I noticed that after running Migration Assistant, the MacBook Pro was complaining that it was no longer connect to the Time Machine.
My instinct tells me that I should attempt to restore the MacBook Pro using the Time Machine backup, but I'm wondering if it might be able to revive the MacBook Pro without having to take that step.  Or, maybe I should select the "Reinstall Mac OS X" option first?  Any ideas?
If I need to use the Time Machine backup, do I need to do anything special given the post Migration Assistant behavior I described above?
    Thanks for any advice!

How can I fool Time Machine into using the original Backup Folder and just doing an incremental backup?
You can't. after using MA on it you have to start a new backup sequence. you can change computer name in Sharing preferences to anything you like but it won't affect TM backups.

at this point yes, you should uninstall everything migrated, clean and then reinstall properly using the installation files.

  • Can i interrupt migration assistant air

    Hi
My existing macbook and new macbook air have been transferring info since yesterday morning via wifi/Migration Assistant.
They have been goin at it all night and still have 10 hours to go. I'm appalled.
I have to leave shortly to go on a trip and need a laptop with me. I was hoping it would be the Air but that obviously can't happen.
If I pull the old Macbook out will I have to start the whole transfer again from scratch? Would it harm the donor Macbook?
    Thanks
    Ian

It should not harm the donor Macbook. Here's a recommendation for the next time you try it. Migration Assistant is not real reliable over wi-fi. Back up your Donor Macbook via Time Machine onto an external drive. If you've never done this before, it may take a few hours--just a few, not  nearly so long as this.
If you then hook up that drive to the Air, and use Migration Assistant to copy onto it the Time Machine copy, it should take you no longer than about thirty minutes to an hour for the Air to become a clone of the original Macbook.
Also, don't be too sure that the copy hasn't already been made. When you stop this and cut off the Air from the Donor, you may find that Migration Assistant hasn't told you the whole truth. Time estimates and such are made moment by moment by the computer and aren't always reliable. They may even be completely wrong thanks to some glitch or other. Maybe the transfer has happened.
Have a good trip with whichever computer you take--and sorry Migration Assistant was a pain.

  • Lost list of my wifi networks after using migration assistant / time machine

After using migration assistant / time machine to set up my new Mac I now miss the list of stored preferred Wlan/WiFi networks. So the passwords of wireless networks I. Used in the past are all gone.
Why is time machine not putting those on my new Mac as it does with many other settings?
How can I manually grab this list from my old Mac and out it on the new machine?
Will I find that time machine missed some other lists and settings as well?
    Thanks for help.

I've been working through this procedure this week. It's pretty good, and when it works it appears to work quite well, but there's still some bumps in the road:
    (1) Once you've migrated, Time Machine itself seems to be a little confused and future backups may fail. You might have to start again by changing to a new Time Machine disk on your new laptop. You may lose your older backups, it's not yet clear to me.
    (2) You can't restore from a previous backup during the migration, only the most recent one. (You can restore from an older backup using tools on the install CD if you need to.) I suspect this won't be an issue for you.
    (3) Migration Assistant once you've logged in a Migration Assistant while you're starting up a new machine seem to work slightly differently. For example, sometimes the newest copy of the applications in your Applications folder (say, iMovie) is preserved, sometimes it makes an exact restore of the old Applications folder even if it's an older version of the application.
Overall it's been a pretty good experience, and what you want to do does work, but be prepared for the possibility of some issues. I tried this back in 10.5.0 a few months ago and had a lot of problems, things seem better now under 10.5.2.

  • Mail not working after using migration assistant - what am I missing?

Mail not working after using migration assistant - what am I missing?

The mailbox list is divided into categories with headings in caps, such as ON MY MAC. When you hover the cursor over one of those headings (except for MAILBOXES), you should see the word Show or Hide on the right. Click Show. The  MAILBOXES category can't be hidden.
In each category, the mailboxes are arranged in groups, such as Inbox. To the left of each group is a small disclosure triangle. If the triangle points to the right, click it so that it points down.

  • Program windows too large after using migration assistant

This seems like a silly question. I just got my MacBook for Christmas and I used Migration Assistant to transfer everything from my iMac to the MacBook. It worked great except that the sizes of the program windows remained the same as well, and they are too big on this 13" screen for me to access things that are way down on the bottom of the window. I can't get a hold of the corner tab that allows you to resize the window manually because it is off the bottom of the screen. I did try minimizing/moving the task bar from the bottom of the screen, but the windows are still too big. I discovered the problem in iTunes, but I suspect it is universal. I'd appreciate any help you can offer! Thanks.

I was having problems with my photo booth, when i'd open it up i could only see half of the pics that I had already taken. I couldn't delete them or anything. After reading what you wrote it had dawned on me, maybe it could have been the screen resolution. I followed your steps and now I can delete the pics I didn't want & I can also see the full photo booth thingy [:
even thou I didn't ask a question, you answered mine & thank you very much [:

  • Password not working after using Migration Assistant

Recycled my MacBook to my wife after reinstalling the OS so that it was a fresh machine. However, she wanted to have family photos /videos  on this machine so she has them locally if she takes machine out of house. So, I used Migration Assistant to transfer these from my mini-mac to the MacBook. Of course this meant I then became a named user the MacBook and the Photos/videos were transferred successfully over to my account.
When I log into the MacBook using the newly created account for my wife I of course cannot see the files transferred over in her directory but when I use Finder I can view the Users and can see the files have been transferred into my directory.
If I log out of my wife's acount and try to login to my account my password fails. Pretty sure I'm entering the correct password and the hint comes up with what looks like a valid hint. Can't be 100% sure as have so many passwords but irrespective if also states in the hint message that I can use my Apple ID to reset this passwordh which is what I'd lke to do to avoid confusion
Going back to the mini-mac I've gone to the Apple ID site (so my password to acccess this works) but cannot see how this allows me to reset a passord for a device.
Too be honest I thought the password for MacBook was my Apple ID Password but clearly not as it works to get access to manage my Apple ID
Hopefully I've explained in enough detail but let mw know if more needed

FIxed it myself. Logged in as wife went to System Prefs > Security and managed to change my passwrod from there. Seems a bit strange but hey it worked

  • How to access Time Machine backups after using migration assistant?

Can someone please help me with a TM issue.
My HD died so I fitted a new one.  I figured that I would do a clean install rather than use TM to bring across a whole bunch of 5 year old junk and Aps that all broke after the Leopard -Snow Leopard -Lion -Mountain Lion upgrades.
Installed 10.8.2 Mountain Lion, no issues.  Then used TM to drag and drop all the Applications I actually wanted, still good.  Then used Migration assistant to bring in the remainder of the settings, documents, mail etc.  For some reason you cannot migrate to the current default user so you have to create a new user profile which I did.  New profile was great so I deleted the other profile created at install that was pretty much blank.
At this stage everything looks awesome but I noticed a video clip was missing in a Final Cut project so I went back into TM to retrieve it.  Now, all the documents in my old user profile in TM have a little no entry symbol on them and I do not have permission to look at those files.
It looks as though I am now being treated as someone else on a different machine and no doubt TM will continue to work from this point on but how do I tell it that there is just one user on this machine and I want access to all the historic backups too?
Any advice will be gratefully received.

Many thanks for your response Mende,
I am trying to specifically NOT do a full TM restore because I have some issues with some programs that I cannot delete.  I wanted a fresh start but from what I understand the TM will bring back everything as it was, including all the corrupt system files.  Fixing the TM permissions would be the preferable option.
(I attempted to make a windows partition on my system once, thinking it would make some sort of clever fake-windows desktop supported by Mac coding. It actually wanted me to do a full windows 7 install on the partition with windows install disks so I cancelled the process.  Because it was a partial install I have not been able to uninstall the modifications and my system was crashing regularly due to some sort of stray code).
Just out of interest, if your OSX install is perfectly good, will TM use that or will it still take your OSX from the TM backup?
Apart from that one stray file, my system is now super clean and faster than ever... but maybe there are still some things missing that I haven't noticed yet.

  • Grey Screen of Death after using Migration Assistant

Just got a new iMac 27" i7 today. Starts up fine until running migration assistant. After which shortly after the grey apple logo appears I get the Grey Screen of Death™ saying I need to restart the computer. Restarting does not help, running Disk Utility from the startup disk does not help. Checked for bad ram, not the ram. Unplugged and let sit for 10 minutes. Nothing. Erased drive, reinstalled OS, started up fine. Ran Migration assistant again, focusing on apps only, not settings. GSOD™ again. Currently I'm reinstalling the OS after erasing the drive again.

I see, using MA over a wireless network isn't highly recommended as it literally could take days or even a week to wirelessly move GB's of data over wi-fi.
However I'm glad you figured out the problem. The problem with Quicken 07 may be that it relies on Rosetta to run on Intel based machines. Unless you have Rosetta on your new iMac that could have been the problem however I"m not sure why. As it turns out I also use Quicken (dreadful software!) and used MA to move it to another machine however my installation went smooth as silk. When I first started Quicken on the new machine Snow Leopard sensed I didn't have Rosetta and prompted me to download it which I did.

  • Interrupting migration assistant from imac to macbook pro?

i am currently using migration assistant to transfer information from my imac to a recently purchased macbook pro. unfortunately i didn't investigate enough before starting the process and i didn't expect it will take me 5 hours to finish. my question is: can i interrupt the process without damaging the computers or files? if so, how?

thanks Kappy for your quick reply. my biggest dilemma is that is about 1:33am, and i am contemplating to stay awake until early morning. still 4h:53min to go for the transfer tonbe completed. another related question: when i turned on my macbook pro was not prompted to install the software that came with it. instead i started with setup assistant that led me to migration information. i even didn't set up a new account or email in my new macbook pro. do you think once the migration is over i'll be prompted to install the software? by the way, my imac is relatively new (purchased in march this year)------- any thoughts? do you think i was not prompted to install the software because the imac software is update?

  • Why is there no data on my new MacBook Pro after using Migration Assistant?

Last night I launched Migration Assistent between my MacBook to my MacBook Pro.  It said it would take 12 hours so I left it over night.  When it finished this morning it said that some files were not able to be transferred.  But there is absolutely nothing on my new MacBook Pro.  Why is that?
My TimeMachine backup disk has a cable that won't work with the new MacBook Pro so what other choice do I have to transfer data?

  • After using Migration Assistant, I don't have access to open my files

The Migration Assistant made me rename the account from my old computer, MacBook Pro, because it was the same as the one on my new computer, new unibody Macbook. It was my name! So I changed the old account to a variation of my name and then Migration Assistant worked fine. All of my documents, files, pictures, music, etc. is now there but in a folder named (the other name) and it says I don't have permission to open the folder!! If I log out and then back in as that other name, all of my files are there and accessible, but I want them all in one place! Under one login, not two. Please is there an easy way to fix this, because I never would have used this Migration Assistant if I knew it was going to clutter up my new computer with two accounts and cause login issues. Thanks in advance....

System settings should be copied across as they are embedded in the ~/Library folder (and sub-folders) which you would have copied across to the external drive.
Once you have copied all of the data into the preferred account name then you should be able to delete the one you don't want. It will ask you if you want to delete the corresponding <home> folder associated with that account. My advice would be to operate your preferred account for some time until you are convinced that you have gotten all your data the way you want it and then delete the other account only after you are satisfied that all is correct.
